Formatting Bibliography cards

As you find potential sources of information for your paper, you should make notes about the
sources in an organized way. You will start by making b ibliography cards for each source, including
all the data you will need to create the bibliography entry for that source. The basic information you
will need includes:

o author’s name (not all sources give the author’s name BUT it may be buried at the end)
o title of the article, website, book, or play. (If it is a book or full-length play, underline the title;

if the source is an article, a website, a poem, or a short play, put the title in quotation marks.)
o the city where the book was published (if a book)
o the name of the publishing company/original publication in which the article appeared
o date of publication
o date you accessed the information
o the web address if the source is from the internet/database

Note that the required information varies a bit for different kinds of sources. Check your M LA
Guidelines b ooklet to see what is required for a newspaper or magazine article, or for various kinds of
on-line sources. Entries for reference books can also require more information than the basic book
format.

Notecards

(adapted from h ttp://www.infoplease.com/homework/t4takingnotes.html) and
http://www.ecps.org/block/Research%20Resources/Research%20Paper%20Note%20Cards.ppt.

1. On each index card, be sure to note the source, including the volume number (if there is one)
and the page number. If you wind up using that idea in your paper, you will have the
information about the source ready to put in your in text citation. If your bibliography cards
are completed correctly, you should just need to add the NUMBER that relates to the source
on your index card per fact.

2. If you copy something directly from a book without putting it in your own words, put quotation marks

around it so that you know it is an exact quotation. This will help you to avoid plagiarism.

Check out the differences between these two note cards for a research paper on baseball:

Good note card:

● Lists source (World Book, Volume 2, page
133)

Includes heading or subtopic
Star players become national heroes  ●
● Is limited to one fact
Many Americans could name every major league player, his  ●
batting average, and other accomplishments. p.133  Has personal note/question
(What batting records were set?)

Bad note card:

  ● Source not indicated in top right corner
Baseball becomes popular

Ty Cobb (Detroit Tigers) outfielder one of the great  ● Heading too vague
all-time players. Another star was Honus Wagner, a  ● Too many facts on one card
bowlegged shortstop.  ● No name after quotation

"Whoever wants to know the heart and mind of America
had better learn baseball."

4. Before you sit down to write your rough draft, organize your note cards by subtopic (you can
write headings on the cards) and make an outline.
