LONDON SCOTTISH REGIMENTAL ASSOCIATION GOLF SOCIETY
Dear LSRAGS member
REPORT FROM 2018
The annual Autumn Foursomes were held at the London Scottish Golf Club on
th
Wimbledon Common on Friday 12 October 2018, outgoing LSRAGS Captain for
2018, Ian Dawson, presented the prizes.
It was a good final day in the Captains seat for Ian who, with Tom Hallett, narrowly
took the day from Steve Lovelock and Stephen Hill. Both pairs brought home net 68
th
scores, however Ian and Tom won on countback (4 and 6 at the 18 ) to take home
the Silverware and a bottle of Hodden Grey each for their efforts.
The Guest Competition was won by David Walker's guest Alan McLaggan, who took
away a bottle of Hodden and a box of balls, again with the slimmest of margins,
beating David's other guest, Alan Balmer, who also carded 33 points but, again, lost
on countback. The morning 9-hole competition was won by Tom Hallet with 16
th
points. Tom also recorded the ‘Longest Drive’ on the 17 hole in the afternoon, with
th
another of David Walker’s guests, Mike Grant, winning 'Nearest the Pin' on the 8
hole.
A good fun day was had by all, with close competition in all matches shown by
countbacks deciding the outcomes of both Members and Guest Competitions.
Nick Gair, Vice-Captain, succeeded Ian as Captain for 2019.
THE FUTURE
First, I would like to express my congratulations and thanks to Ian Dawson for a most
successful year in the Captain’s seat; he presided superbly over an entertaining
season with his usual style and aplomb! I would also like to thank Bill Foster, our
diligent Honorary Secretary, and Steve Hill, our Assistant Secretary, for their efforts
behind the scenes to keep us on track.
Secondly, we have all become increasingly aware of steadily declining numbers over
recent years and feel that there should be a slight change in format for the 2019
season so as to encourage new members from across the Regimental family to get
involved. Thus, our intention is to retain the customary three LSRAGS ‘fixtures’, but
to reduce the commitment of regular players to only two days should they so require
(although we hope that they will attend all three), whist - at the same time - providing
a less formal event at which to recruit new players and members.
FIXTURES FOR 2019
The following dates have been agreed with London Scottish Golf Club, and I hope
that you will put them into your diary now.
Friday 7th June 2019.
This will be our standard format ‘Spring Meeting’ Golf Day, with the traditional
silverware competed for, at a slightly increased cost of £50 per person. The day will
comprise:
• Bacon sandwich and tea/coffee on arrival from 09.00hrs.
• 9-holes warm up/familiarisation in the morning, teeing off at 10.00hrs.
• Plated Ploughman’s Lunch on return to the Clubhouse.
• 18-holes competition in the afternoon, teeing off from 13.00hrs.
• Three-course supper (with Piper) and Presentation of Prizes at 19.00hrs.
This is the Friday before the London Scottish Club Championship, so the course will
be in immaculate condition and provide a challenge, although LSRAGS will be
playing off the yellow tees, so it shouldn’t be too tough. Whilst the greens will run
true, they will not run too quickly as they will be left to top grow in the afternoon
before getting a No1 in early hours of the morning before the championship. So, a
good and entertaining day in prospect.
Saturday 29 June 2019.
th
This is a new ‘Summer Open’ event, designed to attract existing and new members
by holding this on a Saturday afternoon, allowing plenty of time to get 40+ players out
and back in time for supper. Cost is TBC, but less than £50. The format for the
afternoon will be:
• Bacon sandwich and tea/coffee on arrival from 12.00hrs.
• 18-holes competition in the afternoon, teeing off from 13.00hrs.
• Informal buffet supper (with Piper) and Presentation of Prizes at 19.30hrs.
• Depart by 21.30hrs.
Our intention is that, if we do not attract sufficient numbers from within the
Regimental family, we will invite participation from other affiliated organisations such
as those that came together for the ‘Scots in Great War London’ initiative (St
Columba’s Church of Scotland, London Scottish Rugby Football Club, Caledonian
Clun, Caledonian society of London, Burns Club of London, etc).
Friday 27th September 2019.
This will be our standard format ‘Autumn Foursomes Meeting’ Golf Day, with the
traditional silverware competed for, at a cost of £50 per person.
CONCLUSION
I trust that you approve of the above plan. We urgently need to increase the number
of players in order to survive, and I sincerely hope that you - and your guests - will
join us for all, or any, of our fixtures in 2019; we offer a friendly welcome, great golf
on a beautiful and historic course and an enjoyable day at a very reasonable cost. If
you have any comments or suggestions, please email me at: [email protected]
Yours aye
Nick
