VIEW FROM THE CAMP

Manager Chris Brayford and captain Allison McCann give their thoughts
ahead of today’s Vitality Women’s FA Cup First Round clash against
Actonians...

Chris Brayford: “We are looking forward to our first home game at Hornchurch and, while we didn’t
expect to have not had a home game for three months, it is nice that it has turned out to mean that
the first game will be this first round Vitality Women’s FA Cup tie! Thanks to Hornchurch FC and
chairman Colin McBride for their help and for making us welcome.

“Actonians are an old rival who are a fine team and have had an impressive start to the season so it
should be a good game! We have a
strong squad and we’re delighted to
welcome into it, Réa, who will make
her debut after signing this week
from Charlton Athletic. She is a
talented attacking player and a great
addition.

“Last week was a very encouraging
performance, especially given it was
the first game back after lockdown.
It is fantastic for the players to be
back playing in front of the Orient
fans so hopefully we can do that
support justice and reach the second
round!”

Allison McCann: “We are The Os are supporting the Rainbow
thrilled to be playing our first Laces campaign. Football is everyone’s
home game at the Hornchurch

stadium today, hopefully with game.

many Os’ fans in attendance! It’s been a long and difficult year and we’re so grateful to be playing

football again and to have this incredible opportunity to play in a new stadium.”

WELCOME TO OUR NEW HOME

We are delighted to announce that the majority of future home fixtures this
season will now be played at Hornchurch Stadium, home of Hornchurch FC.

Today’s Vitality Women’s FA Cup game is Orient’s first game at the Hornchurch Stadium. The ground
has a capacity of 3500 including 800 covered seats and a pitch side glass-walled restaurant/bar. It
means that, under the current Covid-19
risk mitigation arrangements, spectators
are now able to attend the Orient WFC
games, and enjoy refreshments at the
stadium, while adhering to the essential
Covid-19 safety regulations.

Midfielder Lauren Heria saw Tuesday’s
impressive 4-1 victory for Hornchurch FC
against Wingate and Finchley in the FA
Trophy, remarking:

“It was great to watch the Hornchurch FC win ahead of our FA Cup fixture at the stadium. The ground,
staff, and spectators are all fantastic. I am looking forward to making the stadium our home and
bringing women’s football to the community.”

Hornchurch chairman Colin McBride expressed his enthusiasm for the development of a partnership
between the two sides:

“We look forward to Leyton Orient Women playing their first game at the stadium on Sunday. We hope
this is the first of many fixtures and the start of a great relationship between the two clubs.”

He also noted his own Orient links, including with the club’s Director of Football, Martin Ling:

“From a personal note, Orient was the first club I trained with as a youngster. Martin Ling played for
me when I was a manager of Purfleet and has taken pre-season training for us at Hornchurch.”

4

Today’s match against Actonians is Orient’s
first home fixture since September. Winger
Hayley Barton emphasised the team’s
eagerness to be back playing in front of the
Orient fans as they try to reach the second
round of the Vitality Women’s FA Cup for the
second successive season.
“The team are excited to play at Hornchurch
FC and would like to thank the club for
welcoming us! The stadium and pitch look fantastic, which we hope will suit our style of play. We
know a lot of fans are missing watching live football so I hope they will come along in force and help
us continue our run in the FA Cup.”
Hornchurch Stadium (Bridge Avenue, Upminster, RM14 2LX) is a short walk from Upminster Bridge
Station on the District Line or a ten minute walk from Upminster station which also has c2c rail
services from London and Essex.

Refreshments are available in the clubhouse bar with competitively priced food options to accompany
drinks. COVID-19 protocols are in place at the ground in the form of NHS Track and Trace, a
temperature test upon arrival and social distancing measures. Please respect these requirements
(including the obligation to wear a face mask in the bar and in seated stands).

GETTING TO KNOW...

20. Michelle Young, winger

6

In this week’s ‘Getting to Know...’ feature, we learn a little bit more about
Michelle Young...

Who is your football hero? Has to be Rachel Yankey. Since the moment I started playing,
she was the only person I ever looked up to.

Who is your favourite music artist? My favourite music artist will always be Chris Brown
and, if you listen to his music, I need not explain why.

Who is the first person you call after a game? Unfortunately, I don’t call anyone no

What is your biggest fear? Failing and never being able to get back up.

Where is your favourite holiday

Disney Land.

What is the best game you’ve played
in? Stevenage away!

What keeps you awake at night?
Good question...my phone?!

Which person has influenced your

THE BIG INTERVIEW

Prior to lockdown, Joe Citrone caught up with summer signing Lauren Heria
to see how she’s been settling into East London life...

It’s been an eventful year for summer signing Lauren Heria. A big move, a new club and a new
university course coupled with the unprecedented and chaotic circumstances that 2020 has brought
the world.

The summer recruit has never lost focus, though, and is hoping to find a calmness within the storm as
she aims to bring success to her new club in the 2020/21 season.

On joining Orient...

Since arriving at Orient from Leicester United, Heria has
been a big hit with staff, fellow players and fans alike.

It’s not always easy to fit into a new group. As we all
know, integrating yourself into a completely new set of
people can be a scary, awkward and daunting prospect,
but Heria has made the transition look easy.

“We've actually had quite a lot of new girls join so there's
a lot of us going through that process together”, explains
Heria.

“But the girls who have been there, Ria [Collins] for example, has been really good at settling us in and
then getting us involved. It's nice to have other new players join and I think we've all brought different
stuff to the team, which has been really welcome”.

Moving clubs was always going to be a tough decision for Heria but, after seeing what Orient had to
offer, she was never in any doubt that this was the right club for her as she looked to take the next
step in her career - both on and off the football pitch.

“I moved back down [to London] to start my masters and my family are from London - and I definitely
wanted to continue playing National League football”, says Heria.

“I was looking around different clubs and came across Orient. I remember them being quite a strong
club from when I was younger. When I was over in the Charlton set-up, we would have girls coming
and going between the clubs.

9

“When I was on the website, it looked like a very professional setup, had all the pictures of the girls,
and really easy to find information, which sometimes can be challenging.

“I dropped Chris [Brayford] a message. He literally got me down to train the next day, which was
brilliant. I got involved, and from as soon as I got there, the girls were very welcoming. It was a good
standard of football, good standard of coaching. It was really exactly what I was looking for”.

On balancing football with studying…

Heria has often had to juggle multiple different commitments in her career - and this season is no
different. In the summer, she took the decision to further herself by enrolling onto a Masters course in
Sports Business as she looks to forge a career in which she can “play a role in developing women’s
football”.

The London-born midfielder is, of course, now being forced to balance studying with football - a
situation she has found herself in before, whilst attending university in Leicester and playing
competitively for the local football club - and admits that it wasn’t always easy.

“In terms of work and football, it can be quite challenging”, says the midfielder.

“Just the nature of the work I was doing as well, because I am in higher education, it isn’t always 9 to
5, and other girls on the team now, their jobs are similar to that where it's not always that 9 to 5.

“So it is tough - not just training - but if you've got midweek games, sometimes you'll be at work from
whatever time - say 8am - then straight from work off to play your game, come back late, back to work
again and maybe have training the next day. So it can be quite intense”.

It is crucial for Heria, therefore, to have a support network around her that helps her through the
moments where the hectic schedule becomes overbearing. Luckily, she’s found exactly that within the
Orient dressing room.

“If you've had a bad day at work, trying to switch that off, to get your head ready to play a match or
get your head ready to train can be quite challenging.

“But we do have such a good team dynamic. I think the girls are very good at picking up if you're down
and supporting you. That's been really good for me.”

On going viral…

We all tried different ways to keep ourselves from going up the wall during lockdown; whether it was
learning a new skill, taking up a new hobby or trying a new recipe. Heria was no different and decided

10

to use her football talents to good use by setting up a TikTok account and showcasing some of her
skills and tricks.

“I was on Instagram and there was a girl doing football skills on TikTok
advert on my Instagram and I was like 'I could do that'”, explains Heria.

“It was actually, I guess a little bit before, but a lot of the growth came over
the COVID period and lockdown because a lot of people didn't have much
to do and they were watching more videos and, for me, I didn't have much
to do so I had a lot more time to create stuff.

“It was never really an intention, like this is something I really want to do.
It was just something that kind of happened. It's been nice as well
because, obviously, we spoke a little bit about role models, and on there
have girls common stuff like 'you like you really inspire me' or 'I'm really
struggling because people were telling me I shouldn't play football as a
girl'.

“And there's a community on there, I think platforms like that have been really important to give more
visibility to women's footballers as well”.

On Orient ambitions…

It has been a heavily disrupted first stage to the season where, rather remarkably, Orient have still
only played three league games with Christmas fast approaching. The return from the break
coinciding with the long-awaited move to the Hornchurch FC stadium could provide the O’s with a
timely boost, though, and Heria is still very confident of a successful campaign.

“I don't know what we're saying publicly, but I really do think we've got a team that should be and can
be challenging for that top position in the league. When I look at the quality, we have the players. I
think that's a realistic goal. And that's what we can and should be pushing for.

“And I certainly think that's where the girls’ heads are at. We want to win the league. Of course there
will be challenges. As a new team coming together, that is a challenge. But for me long-term, I want to
look to win that league.

“My plan is definitely just to move up as much as possible and challenge myself to play at the highest
level. I really, truly hope that will be with Leyton Orient, and I hope we can get promotion this season.
And if not this season, next”.

EDITOR’S COLUMN

About me...

Hello everyone, I hope you’re all doing as well as you possibly can
during the crazy, challenging times that we currently live in.

As this is the first of these columns that I’ll be writing for the
Leyton Orient Women matchday programme, I suppose it would
be a sensible idea to start by introducing myself. My name is Joe
and I’m absolutely delighted to be joining a young and vibrant
LOWFC media team for the 2020/21 season as the new Programme
Editor.

Naturally, I’m a huge football fan and I’ve supported Oxford United Football Club since I was knee-
high to a grasshopper. Ever since my Dad took me along to my first live match against Barnet at the
three-sided and thoroughly unattractive Kassam Stadium back in 2006, I gained a thirst for live sport
and a burning, imperishable passion for the beautiful game that has never died out - although I must
admit that VAR has tested that in the last couple of years!

That passion and love for football has driven me to pursue a career in the game from a young age and
I have been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to work in and around women's football for the
past twelve months or so; expanding and widening that passion for the sport over to the women’s
game as well as the men’s.

Last season, I was involved with Tottenham Hotspur Women’s media team for the club’s first ever WSL
campaign. I learned a lot during my time with them and the experience was wonderful and wacky in
equal measure.

One week, I was working in the brand-spanking new Spurs stadium and the next I was pitching up at
the home of Grays Athletic Football Club. But that, in essence, is what I find so brilliant and interesting
about working in women’s football; it’s a growing sport that is still finding its feet and I just think that
is so exciting to be a part of.

I’ve already made so many memories whilst working in women’s football and I hope that I can create
even more whilst I’m involved with Leyton Orient Women over the course of a campaign that is sure to
be another rollercoaster ride.

12

What we have planned...

I think that’s enough about me (I promise I won’t be so self-indulgent in future columns!) and time for
a bit more about Orient and what the media team have planned for the rest of the 2020/21 season.

I think it’s safe to say this has been far from a normal
season so far, but our aim has not changed: to
consistently deliver interesting and engaging content
that will delve deep into the lives and fascinating
stories of our players and build long-lasting
connections between the club and our supporters.

We believe that so many of our players have
captivating stories to tell and we want their stories
and personalities to be at the heart of everything we do. We’re all driven in making sure our players
receive the coverage they deserve.

As part of that, we’re aiming to publish a matchday programme - just like the one you’re reading now!
- for every one of our home games that will be chock full of in-depth and revealing interviews, fun
quizzes, match reports, extensive previews and lots of other interesting content that we’re sure you’ll
all enjoy this season.

In modern-day football, there has never been a greater focus on clubs using social media to drive
engagement. Therefore, we also plan to make improvements to our online presence with more
activity, video interviews with players and staff, fancy new social media graphics, podcasts, highlights
packages and much, much more.

On the pitch, things are just as exciting as we make our transition into our new home at Hornchurch
FC and finally *all being well* welcome supporters back to help support the team and cheer us to
victory!

We know things are still very crazy in the world right now, but we are going to do everything we can to
carry on and we still firmly believe that 2020/21 is going to be a big season for Leyton Orient Women -
both on and off the football pitch.

Make sure that you’re a part of it. You won’t want to miss a second.

15

ACTION REPLAY

LOFC reporter Brendan Pitcher reviews our winning return to action following
the second COVID-19 lockdown...

Eastbourne Town 1-4 Leyton Orient - (6/12/2020)

Chris Brayford made four changes to the side that last
took to the field on October 25th, as Bradley, Trezzi,
Cheryl Anderson and Claudia Zahui replaced Skye
McNally, Kayleigh Xidhas, Michelle Young and
Katherine Long in the starting lineup.

After a 42 day break, you would have forgiven the O’s
had they taken a while to find their feet in the game.
However, that proved not to be the case as they made
a blistering start on the south coast. In the third
minute skipper Allison McCann broke through the
Eastbourne backline and let fly, only to see her effort cannon back off the underside of the crossbar
and away.

Orient maintained their electric opening, and took the lead in the 10th minute through Barton, after
good link-up play between Zahui and Nyara Denny saw the latter square the ball for an easy finish for
the O’s winger.

Barton, in particular, looked in the mood for the visitors. She could have doubled her tally three
minutes later but blazed over on the half volley, before five minutes later beating her marker with a
superb piece of skill and releasing Trezzi whose shot could only find the side netting.

Against the run of play, the hosts almost equalised in the 22nd minute when Kellie Larkin rattled the
crossbar with a free-kick from range.

Though it was to be the O’s who found the next goal. Barton’s out-swinging corner eventually fell to
Bradley in the box and the centre back blasted home to mark her first appearance for over three
months with a goal.

16

After receiving a blow to the head Lauren Heria was forced to make way mid way through the first half
to be replaced by Maisie Cannon, and soon after the Saffrons pulled one back. Larkin firing in from the
spot after Kate Kerr had committed a foul in the area.

Orient were awarded their own spot-kick just before the interval after Barton was brought down in the
box. Having missed in the shootout last time out against QPR, McCann’s bravery to step up once again
was rewarded as she precisely placed the ball into the far left corner to restore her side’s two goal
advantage.

Brayford’s side looked comfortable following the restart and could have had a fourth were it not for
the heroics of the Eastbourne ‘keeper, who did well to keep out Sophie Lee’s effort and then did even
better to deny Denny from close range on the follow up.

Soon after the O’s made their second change, Zahui making way for Young in a switch that saw Denny
move up top.

The home side had the ball in the net in the 68th minute, however their celebrations were cut shot by
the flag of the assistant referee.

Brayford made his third substitution 20 minutes from time bringing on Scarlett Smith for Denny and
the forward was involved almost immediately as Orient grabbed their fourth. Smith’s low effort was
well saved by the ‘keeper but the rebound fell to Trezzi who thumped in from close range to put the
tie to bed.

The O’s remained relentless as the match entered its closing stages. Young came close to adding a
fifth on two occasions, first with a stunning solo run that finished with her firing an effort just over,
then hitting a low strike that flashed just past the post shortly before the referee blew the final whistle.

She said…

Skipper Allison McCann: “It was so fun to be back. It was an excellent game, I
thought everybody played really well considering we had been away for a
whole month.”

The line-up...

Orient: Ogunde (Jaramillo 86′), Lee, Bradley, Kerr, Anderson, Trezzi, Heria (Cannon 32′), Barton,
McCann, Denny (Smith 70′), Zahui (Young 58′)

Goals: Barton 10′, Bradley 27′, McCann 44′, Trezzi 77′

17

THE BIG PREVIEW

LOFC reporter Brendan Pitcher delves a little deeper into today’s FA Cup tie
against Actonians...

After defeating Eastbourne Town in the Third Qualifying Round last weekend, Orient welcome
Actonians to Hornchurch for their first fixture at their new home.

The O’s come into this one in good form having lost just once in 90 minutes so far this season and will
be looking to reach the Second Round of the FA Cup for the second consecutive season.

Road to the First Round...

Chris Brayford’s side have reached the First Round Proper of this year’s Vitality Women’s FA Cup after
comfortably seeing off two sides from the division below.

Katherine Long’s 7th minute strike was enough to
see off Dulwich Hamlet in the Second Qualifying
Round in front of a bumper crowd in South London.

Orient didn’t let a near two-month gap between the
Second and Third Qualifying Rounds deter them as
they once again fought off an upset, beating
Eastbourne Town 4-1 on the South Coast.

Hayley Barton bagged the opener just ten minutes
into the tie, after some neat interplay between
Claudia Zahui and Nyara Denny left the O’s winger
with an easy finish.

Kate Bradley doubled Orient’s lead mid-way through the first half, before the hosts pulled one back
from the spot.

The O’s were then awarded a penalty of their own just before the interval which Allison McCann duly
converted, and the scoring was finished off by Egle Trezzi in the 77th minute.

18

The Opposition...

Actionians compete in the same division as Orient – The WNL Division One SE. They
currently occupy second place in the league table with three wins and a draw from their four games
played.

The West London based side opened their
season with a thumping 5-0 win over Stevenage
before following that up with a 2-1 victory over
Kent Football United. They dropped their only
points of the campaign so far in a 0-0 draw with
Enfield Town but bounced back in good fashion,
defeating AFC Wimbledon 2-1 at Carshalton in
their most recent league fixture.

Managed by Danny Harrigan, Actonians reached
this stage of the competition with
comprehensive wins over Saltdean United and Worthing. Orient’s defence will have to keep an eye on
Naoko Wada and Sharon Odofin who have 11 goals between them in all competitions this season,
including four in the FA Cup.

They also have excellent FA Cup pedigree after reaching the Third Round for the first time in their
history under the stewardship of Harrigan last season.

Previous Meetings...

Orient were the victors the last time the two sides met back in September of last year, as they ran out
2-0 winners at Rectory Park.
Orient also faced off against Actonians in the final of the 2019 Capital Cup at The Powerday Stadium
with Actonians edging out a 1-0 win after a fiercely-fought and edgy encounter.
