57 PRESERVING PIGEONS AND THEIR HABITAT UniMAP Student Services Department (Jabatan Hal Ehwal Pelajar UniMAP) collaborated with the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN) to created a campaign to protect pigeons in the areas of student housing pigeon, and also by devising a tool to control wild pigeons without harming residents. The program was held on August 1, 2020 to April 1, 2021. Wild pigeons inhabit the student residence building in Simpang Empat for almost 10 years by perching by windows and balconies, nesting and inhabiting the attics and ceilings of the buildings. As resident birds, they often do not move anywhere and live in one area especially if they have access to their needs of water, food and shelter. Most of the ceilings in the attic have been found to be badly mouldy as the pigeons are able to produce a lot of faeces at one time and give off an unpleasant odour. Apart from that, pigeons in the Simpang Empat residential college building also made the occupants of the building feel uncomfortable and unsafe. This campaign programme involved two housing complexes. The location of this program was the UniMAP Housing Complex, Simpang Empat, Perlis, and at the UniMAP Housing Complex, Kangar, Perlis. This program provided methods of identifying threats and sources of accidents and health risks. The outcome of this program was to create a safe, comfortable, and clean environment for the occupants of the buildings. In addition, also aimed to improve the quality of life by reducing stress due to the threat of pigeons. Lastly, the campaign hoped to be able to find out ways of naturally shaped solutions that do not result in wildlife extinction and environmental pollution. The total funds allocated for this program amounted to RM525,713.00 from the Petronas Foundation. SDG15: Life on Land
