Age Requirements & Exceptions Age requirements exist for the safety of all participants and the skills required to be successful in the program or class. If you wish to request an age exception, please do so in writing at least one week prior to the start of the program. Exceptions are not guaranteed and are up to the judgement of the instructor. Photo Policy The recreation department and/or press will take pictures & videos on occasion of participants for publicity purposes and for local cable. If you do not want to have you or your child(ren) photographed, please let us know in writing at least 24 hours before your program begins. All programs have a minimum number of participants required for the program to run. Programs may be canceled due to low enrollment, so don't wait to register! We communicate program information primarily through email. We will email through the MyRec website to convey changes, cancellation information, or other important information. Please make sure your email address is active and up to date so that you don't miss a message! Cancellation messages will also be posted on our MyRec site’s landing page and on Facebook. Registration Information The Shrewsbury Recreation Department uses an online registration system called MyRec. All participants must have an active MyRec account to register for programs. Please visit shrewsburyma.myrec.com to create an account and register for programs! If you need assistance, you are always welcome to come to the Recreation Office or call us at 508-841-8503. Code of Conduct We ask all participants to respect the staff, other participants, age requirements, and the equipment. Please refrain from causing bodily harm to others and from using foul language. Additional rules will be announced at each program. If a participant fails to cooperate with the rules, the department reserves the right to dismiss or suspend a participant with no money refunded. Each situation will be evaluated by the Recreation Staff. Here at Shrewsbury Recreation, our programs and events are 100% funded by user fees, so our refund policy is strictly adhered to. The Shrewsbury Recreation Department (SRD) does not receive Town funding for our programs, part time staff wages, or event costs. They are all paid for with the revenue that we bring in on programs. By supporting the SRD, you are giving back to the Shrewsbury community by boosting local employment, supporting community engagement, and helping the local economy. Super Soccer Stars Indoor Session: Sundays, April 7 - May 5 (skip 4/14) Location: Sherwood MS Gym Outdoor Session: Sundays, May 19 - June 23 Location: Town Hall Lawn 10 am: Parent & Me (ages 12 - 24 mo. with a caregiver) Indoor Session Cost: $92 Outdoor Session Cost: $138 Super Soccer Stars uses play based activities and engaging original music to develop pre-soccer skills in a fun and nurturing environment. 10:50 am: Soccer Tots (ages 2 - 3.5 years) Indoor Session Cost: $100 Outdoor Session Cost: $150 This youth soccer program offers a fun, positive and non-competitive environment where young children will learn the fundamentals of soccer. Coaches use positive reinforcement to teach skills, while building confidence. These classes will start with a warm-up, continue with skill building, and end with a smallsided scrimmage match. Little Kid Creative Drama Ages: 2 - 5 with a caregiver Instructor: Little Spark Theater Location: Senior Center April 24 - May 29 (6 weeks) Wednesdays, 4:30 - 5:15 pm Cost: $185 This is the class that started it all and it’s an absolute blast! Little Kid Creative Drama is a high-energy, imaginative, zany, silly, super fun theater experience! In this class we focus on senses, feelings, and movement through fun, energetic, and imaginative play. This is social/emotional learning at its best! Children build confidence, social awareness, empathy, and problemsolving skills. Each class has an early literacy component and is aligned with state standards for Theater Education. Preschool Programs Programs and classes are intended for children ages 2-5 (unless otherwise noted). Parent or caregiver participation or support is expected for this age group. Page 3 “Mommy & Me” Yoga Ages: 1 - 4 with a caregiver Location: SPENGA Fitness Studio, Marlborough Wednesdays, April 24 - May 29 (6 weeks) 10 - 10:45 am Cost: $90 Join certified yoga instructor Ms. Britany from SPENGA as she presents a story and simple poses in this program designed for families with children ages 1-4 to participate with a caregiver. Discover how movement can bring stories to life in new ways, strengthening our minds, bodies, breath, and heart! For best experience, a yoga mat, towel, or blanket is recommended. No yoga experience necessary!


Preschool Programs Programs and classes are intended for children ages 2-5 (unless otherwise noted). Parent or caregiver participation or support is expected for this age group. Bitty Bball Ages: 3 - 5 Location: Shrewsbury Club Wednesdays, 5 - 5:30 pm, May 1 -June 26 Cost: $194 OR Saturdays, 11:45am - 12:15 pm, May 4 - June 29 Cost: $194 Bitty Basketball skills class is for our youngest athletes in training to tryout basketball. Each week they work on new skills to learn the game of basketball. Tumble Tots Gymnastics Ages: 2.5 - 5 Location: Shrewsbury Club Saturdays, 10 - 10:45 am, May 4 - June 22 Cost: $220 This class enhances emerging gymnastics skills in an energetic and creative environment. This class is a wonderful place for first-time experiences with a teacher and peers! At ages 4 and 5, children refine basic skills that reinforce a heightened aptitude for all physical sports activities. This class offers great challenges to the older preschooler on scaled-down gymnastics equipment. Page 4 Lil Dragons Karate: Ages: 3 - 5 Location: Shrewsbury Club Tuesdays, 11 - 11:45am May 14 - June 25 Cost: $151 OR Saturdays, 9-9:45am May 18 - June 29 Cost: $151 The Little Dragons program is designed for children within the preschool age. We focus on the core principles of respect, discipline, honesty, courtesy and integrity. The basics of balance, coordination, cooperation, kicking, punching and blocking are taught as well as some basic life skills; Self Defense, stranger awareness, fire safety, out-and-about safety, bike safety, etc. Tiny Tennis Ages: 3 - 5 Location: Shrewsbury Club Wednesdays, 6-6:30pm Session 1: March 20 - June 19 Cost: $252/per session Preschool aged players will be introduced to tennis! Instructors will help kids become comfortable with their junior tennis racquet, the tennis court, and tennis balls

Big Kid Creative Drama Ages: 6 - 8 Location: Senior Center Instructor: Little Spark Theater Wednesdays, 5:30 - 6:15 pm April 24 - May 29 (6 weeks) Cost: $185 Big Kid Creative Drama brings imagination to the next level! This class is the same as Little Kid Creative Drama but geared toward bigger kids. It’s high-energy, imaginative, zany, silly, and super fun! This is social/emotional learning at its best! Children build confidence, social awareness, empathy, and problem-solving skills. Big Kid Creative Drama also has a literacy component and is aligned with state standards for Theater Education. Page 5 Intro to Track & Field Location: Oak Middle School Track Instructor: Skyhawks Wednesdays, April 24 - May 22 (5 weeks) Ages: 7-12, 5-6:30 pm Cost: $125 The fundamentals of body positioning, stride, proper stretching and cool-down techniques are taught. Track and field events include javelin, discus, shot put, hurdles, long jump, triple jump and various running and relay events (activities may vary by area). Participants also learn positive life skills such as teamwork and sportsmanship. Participants should bring a water bottle and wear appropriate athletic attire. Every child receives a Skyhawks t-shirt. Flag Football Location: Oak Middle School Football Field Instructor: Skyhawks Tuesdays, April 23 - May 21 (5 weeks) Grades K-2: 5-6 pm, $95 Grades 3-5: 6:15-7:30 pm, $105 Experience the excitement of football with Skyhawks Flag Football. Using a curriculum developed by the experts from USA Football, coaches will teach skills like passing, receiving, kicking and flag pulling. Participants will gain confidence and learn important life lessons in a fun, positive environment. Participants should bring a water bottle and wear appropriate athletic attire. Every child receives a Skyhawks tshirt.

Children's Etiquette Workshops Instructor: New England School of Protocol Friday, April 26 Grades 2 - 7 Conversation Skills | Senior Center | 4:00 - 5:00 pm, $55 Developing a child’s conversational skills and etiquette is important as it helps them build confidence, cultivate friendships, and understand social expectations. Restaurant Ready | Grades 2 - 7 | Senior Center | 5:15 - 6:15 pm, $55 In this class, students will learn how to use good manners at the table when dining out at a restaurant or a special event. Friday, May 31 Grades 5 - 9 Pre -Teen Netiquette | Senior Center | 5:30 - 6:30 pm, $60 Elevate your child’s digital presence with our Pre-Teen Netiquette Program! In today's tech-savvy world, understanding social media etiquette, texting norms, and email protocol is essential. Digital users need to keep in mind that colleges and employers are seeking people with not only good technical and academic skills, but also with social graces, self-awareness, and a positive presence on the internet. Our program provides practical, hands-on guidance to ensure your child navigates the digital landscape with confidence and respect. Youth Basketball Summer League Location: Shrewsbury High School indoor basketball courts Tuesdays, June 25 - August 6 (skip 7/2) - 6 total games Grades 3 - 7 (current school grade is used to determine eligibility) Games start after 5:30 pm (schedule is TBD based on enrollment) Cost: $99 per participant Sign-up for the summer recreational basketball league! Teams will be divided equally by skill level and t-shirts are provided to each team. Please indicate if you are willing to coach when registering online. Teams will be predetermined like the winter basketball league (no onsite assessment). Teams and schedules will be emailed before the start of the season. There are no weekly practices, just games for the summer league. Intro to Yoga for Kids Location: Sherwood MS Ages 6-12, 10 -11 am, $50 Instructor: Bindu Gupta Sundays, April 7 - 28 (skip 4/14) Special 3-week intro program! Embark on a journey with us, where yoga poses, games, and stories unite to create a magical experience for children. This unique blend promotes physical fitness, emotional well-being, and mindfulness. Intro to Mixed Media Art Location: Sherwood MS Ages 6-12, 11 am - Noon, $65 Instructor: Bindu Gupta Sundays, April 7 - 28 (skip 4/14) Special 3-week intro program! Immerse your child in our one-of-a-kind Mixed Media Art Class, where they can unleash their creativity through a vibrant blend of techniques and materials. Youth Programs Kids Test Kitchen Location: Senior Center Instructor: Maya Capasso Wednesdays, April 24 - June 5 (skip May 22) Ages: 6 - 10, 4:30 - 5:30 pm Cost: $195 On a mission to get eaters of all ages and abilities cooking, tasting and thinking about healthy ingredients! We present kids the opportunity to explore new or familiar foods in their raw, unmanipulated state. Then, working as a team, they’ll slice, dice, peel, measure, and cook until they’ve prepared the finished dish. Class closes with an opportunity to taste the result of their hard work. Students receive a printed recipe card and the focal ingredient - or a sample of the finished dish - so they can show off what they learned! Even the most reluctant eaters enjoy Kids Test Kitchen, where participation is encouraged, and the choice to taste is always one’s own. Lessons are planned to celebrate seasonal produce, whole grains, and legumes. Kids have food allergies, but they shouldn’t miss out on the fun. Karate Kids Ages: 8 - 13 Location: Shrewsbury Club Mondays, 6:15 - 7 pm April 15 - June 24 (skip 5/27) Cost: $129 OR Saturdays, 10:15 - 11 April 20 - June 29 Cost: $129 Our goal in these classes is to introduce our new students to our core values all while learning the basic techniques of martial arts and improving their general physical fitness level. Our goal for the upper belt students is to emphasize confidence building with our sparring drills and to expand the student’s knowledge of martial arts techniques and their self-defense applications. EVO JR Academy & All Skills Events Location: 697 Hartford Turnpike, Shrewsbury Instructor: EVO Academy Coaches Various dates and times Ages: 7-12 The EA teaches all aspects of the game of baseball (pitching, hitting, fielding in all positions, throwing and base running) through instructional stations and coach-led games for understanding learning by our instructional staff. Groups are broken into appropriate age groups and we maintain a 10:1 player to coach ratio. Youth Programs Junior Golf Lessons Location: Juniper Hill Golf Center Ages 7-14 Cost: $155 Thursdays 4:30 pm (5 weeks starting 4/25) OR Saturdays 10:00 am (5 weeks starting 4/27) Our number one goal in our Junior Golf Program is to make sure your children enjoy themselves playing golf. If they enjoy golf, they will keep playing. As they keep playing and develop correct swing mechanics, they will become better players. We combine instruction, imitation, fun, and exciting games to keep their interest level high. Clubs and balls provided if needed. What’s covered? Intro to Crew Rowing Weeks A & C 4 Days/Week, M-Th Grades 7-11 (completed) Session 1: 8 - 10 am Session 2: 11 am - 1 pm Cost: $250/session/week The rowing summer camp is perfect for high school teens who are interested in having fun, want to learn a new skill, keeping fit and being out on the water. There is no rowing experience necessary to participate, just and interest in rowing. Teens will start by learning in 4 and 8 person shells then working their way into doubles. The goal of this program is to introduce the basic mechanics of rowing, providing foundational skills, and build familiarity with boathouse life. It's perfect for all fitness levels, does not require any previous rowing experience, and is intended to be very hands-on. This program is being offered through a partnership with the Regatta Point Community Sailing and The Recreation Department

Lacey’s Glam Squad Grades: 6-12 Location: Senior Center Conference Room Instructor: Lacey Tomaiolo Wednesdays, 6 - 7 pm April 24 - May 22 Cost: $65 Glam Squad is designed to foster selfconfidence, creativity, and positive self-expression through makeup artistry. This program is designed to provide a safe and supportive environment where participants can learn fundamental makeup skills, explore their individual styles, and build connections with their peers. Middle School & Teen Programs Programs and classes are intended for young adults ages 13-18 (unless otherwise noted). Parent or caregiver communication with department staff and instructors is expected for this age group. Lacey’s Makeup Academy Grades: 5 - 8 Location: Senior Center Conference Room Instructor: Lacey Tomaiolo Wednesdays, 5 - 6 pm April 24 - May 22 Cost: $65 Calling all that are interested in makeup! Join Lacey in this program that is a simple guide to makeup for beginners. This is the perfect class for you if you want to learn more about makeup. Each week Lacey will cover a different step in the makeup process! We ask that you bring your own makeup for sanitary reasons. Page 10


Heartsaver CPR & AED Course Ages: 12+ Instructor: Heather Welch Location: Shrewsbury Senior Center Saturday, April 27 10 am - 12:30 pm Cost: $75 The CPR & AED course is provided by Heartsaver through the American Heart Association. Safe Sitter Ages: 12 - 16 Instructor: Heather Welch Location: Shrewsbury Senior Center Thursday, May 9 5 pm - 7:30 pm Cost: $65 The Safe Sitter course will help you learn what you need to know and what every parent wants in a responsible babysitter! Learn how to interview for a babysitting job, choose safe and ageappropriate toys and games, perform basic first aid, learn diapering and feeding techniques, handle bedtime issues, learn tips for having a safe babysitting experience and more! Certification cards will be given after completion of the course. Please bring a drink, snack and doll or stuffed toy to each class. You may register for the CPR & AED Certification if you would like to obtain this credential in addition to the Babysitting certification. Safe @ Home Course Ages: 9 - 11 Instructor: Heather Welch Location: Shrewsbury Senior Center Thursday, May 16 5 - 7 pm Cost: $55 Safe@Home is ideal for children that have expressed interest in assuming the responsibility of staying home alone. Students learn how to practice safe habits, how to prevent unsafe situations, and what to do when faced with dangers such as power failures or weather emergencies. Students are also introduced to basic First Aid and learn a system to help them assess and respond to injuries and illnesses. Check out our Volunteer Opportunities on page 18! CPR & AED Certification segment of this course is for anyone ages 12 - adult! The Dragon’s Summit (Dungeons & Dragons) Ages: 12 - 16 Instructor: Nick Metcalf Location: Shrewsbury Senior Center Craft Room Saturdays, April 27 - June 15 (skip May 11 & May 25) (6 weeks) 1 - 4pm Cost: $195 HEAR YE HEAR YE! The Shrewsbury Recreation Department has partnered with Quests at Hand to host the Dragon’s Summit: a gathering of 10 heroes who are ready to leap into action! Are ye brave enough to roll your dice and make tough decisions to save the innocent?! Are ye willing to answer the call!?! Whether or not you are a new adventurer or a knowledgeable mage, ALL are welcome to play Dungeons and Dragons. For the first session, DM Nick M. will be running a character creation day where you will make characters and define the overall vibe of the campaign. For the following 5 sessions, you shall be going on a riveting journey that will require wit and will to survive! New players are always welcome. Don’t wait to register, we need a minimum of 6 adventurers to run this exciting program! Counselor in Training (CIT) Grades: 7 - 10 (completed) Days: Monday - Friday for 2 weeks Dates: Weeks D & E, July 15 – July 26 Time: 8am – 4pm (can say until 5pm if needed) Instructor: Caleigh Murphy Location: Lincoln Street School, Northborough Cost: $300 for both weeks This program is designed for teens entering grades 8-11 in Fall 2024 who are looking for a “hands-on” leadership training experience. Badminton is a rapidly growing sport in the United States with many opportunities for athletes to compete in local and national level tournaments as well as play for recreation. At the highest level, players are able to hit the birdie at over 300mph! These introductory badminton lessons feature former two time Olympian Eva Waller and former member of team USA, Nick Waller. These lessons are designed to build a strong foundation for players grades 5-8 by teaching them both basic racket skills and sportsmanship. All equipment is provided for participants, no prior experience necessary.

Over the course of the program, participants will learn the basics of tennis through a fun and engaging curriculum. No previous experience is required to participate, and the program is open to those of all abilities. Younger children will focus on developing fundamental tennis skills while older participants will learn the basic strokes and match play. Participants are strongly encouraged to provide their own tennis rackets. There will be limited rackets available for participants to use who don't already have one. Advanced Session This program is for more experienced tennis players who have diverse abilities (recommended NTRP 2.5 and above, or at least a year of tennis experience). Adult Programs Sunday Pickleball Lessons Instructor: Suzanne Cox Location: Beal Elementary Gym Ages: 16+ Cost: $105 Sundays, April 7 - May 19 (7 weeks) Learn the basics of the fastest growing sport in America! Suzanne is a Certified Coach through the Professional Pickleball Registry, and will start at the very beginning, teaching rules, lingo, court awareness, grip, and then work in drills and match play. Bring your own paddle, balls provided. Class descriptions below: Beginner 1: 8:30 - 9:30 am / 9:45 - 10:45 am Players new or nearly new to the game of pickleball. The class will center on basic technical aspects of successfully playing the game of pickleball. In addition to rules of play, focus will include techniques for effective forehand shots, backhand shots, dinks, drops, serves, and return of serves. The class will also cover the more tactical skills of court positioning, transitions to non-volley zone, and non-volley zone play. The goal of the class is to give players the skills needed to reach the 2.5-player level. Beginner 2: 11:15 am - 12:15 pm Players who have completed a Beginner 1 pickleball course or have equivalent skills. The class will center on both the technical and tactical skills needed to advance from a 2.5 to a 3.0 player. Focus includes hitting medium-paced serves and volleys with direction and consistency; learning and using drop shots to reset gameplay and open shot opportunities; court positioning in different scenarios; understanding how to identify your strengths and your opponent's weaknesses to maximize point opportunities; and how to compete in a pickleball tournament Intermediate 1: 12:30 - 1:30 pm This class level is for the player who already has a basic understanding of the game and are trying to get to the next level. Focus will be on more effectively using challenging shots like the drop shot, increasing control on your shot placement, running set plays and scenarios, as well as developing more power in shots. Geared towards those who are solid 2.75 or 3.0 players and wanting to play more competitively and/or play in tournaments. Tournament play will be covered in this session. Outdoor Pickleball Courts at Coolidge There are 4 pickleball courts open for public use behind Coolidge Elementary School at 1 Florence Street. The courts are available on a first come-first served basis, permits/reservations are not an option at this time. We ask that players are responsible stewards of this public amenity by following the court rules: 1. Pickleball courts are free to use and open to the public on a first come, first served basis. Reservations will only be made for Recreation Department lessons and programs and will be posted on the fence and our website. (*Permits, meet-ups or reservations made through third-party online platforms, such as Playtime Scheduler, will not be honored.) 2. Use at your own risk. 3. No food, glass containers, or alcoholic beverages permitted. 4. No pets allowed on courts. 5. No rollerblading, bicycles or skateboarding allowed on courts. 6. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. 7. Keep play to 90 minutes if there are people waiting for a court. 8. Do not abuse nets or equipment. Department Policies Cancellations/Withdrawals Refunds are only issued if the Recreation Department cancels the class or program due to low enrollment, weather, or for other reasons as they might arise. In the circumstance that the Recreation Department cancels, full refunds will be issued in the form of a household account credit or a check from the Town. Please note that our registration system does not save credit card information and so we are unable to refund credit cards. Please allow 2-4 weeks for refund checks to be processed. You must respond to the cancellation email in writing with your choice of repayment within 5 business days, or your refund will automatically be issued as an account credit and may not be reversed. For all registrant initiated cancellations/withdrawals, the admin fee shall be $10.00 for programs under $99.00 or $15.00 for programs $100.00-$199.00 and $20 for programs more than $200.00. Please note that refunds of $50.00 or less will be applied to household credit only. In the case of a medical withdrawal for injury or serious illness, a written request must be submitted to the department accompanied by a doctor’s note. A refund, minus a 10% admin fee, will be issued in the form of household credit. If the cost of the program was over $100, a refund via Town check may be issued upon request. If you choose to withdraw after registration for personal preference or scheduling reasons, a refund will not be given. Classes are non-transferable. Additional refund policies specific to a program or class may be in place at the time of registration and will be noted in the program description on our website. Weather or Emergency Cancellations We try to plan one makeup date at the conclusion of program sessions in case of inclement weather. We will do our best to make up any missed sessions, but this cannot be guaranteed. Refunds will not be issued for missed dates or dates that could not be made up. Missed Classes Refunds or partial refunds will not be issued for missed classes/program dates due to illness (please see above for medical policy), vacations or other personal scheduling conflicts. Your fee is based on enrollment, not attendance. If you know you or your child(ren) will be absent, please contact the office to let us know. Wait Lists If a program is full, you may join the wait list at any time. You will not be charged for the program unless a spot opens and you are contacted by the Recreation Department to formally register. If you are added to a wait list and an opening becomes available, we will automatically contact the first person on the list. If you receive a wait list email or phone call, you must respond within 24 hours to register for the program, and can make a payment at that time. After 24 hours, the next person on the list will be contacted, and we will move down the list until the spot has been filled. Program Transfers You may request to transfer into another program if: • The request is made before the second meeting/day of the class or program. • If there is space available on the roster for the class you are looking to transfer into. • If the minimum number of participants is still met for the class you are currently enrolled in. A $10 transfer fee is applied to all transfers. If the cost of the program you are transferring into is higher than the original, you will also be required to pay the difference. Pro-Rating Classes and programs run based on minimum enrollment. In an effort avoid program cancellations due to low enrollment, we ask that you consider your schedule prior to registering for a program. If you are registering for a program regardless of whether or not you can attend all scheduled sessions, you will be charged the full registration fee. Pro-rated refunds will not be issued. You may be able to register for a program if 2 or fewer dates have passed and there is still space available. Accessibility The Shrewsbury Recreation Department aims to offer programming that is accessible to all community members.
