Today's Opposition London Lions In the summer of 1995, the players and officials of Maccabi Association London (MAL) decided that they had reached the limits of Sunday football and that a new challenge was required. The Hertfordshire Senior County League was a popular choice, and the club made its debut in the 95/96 season under a new name of MALEX. Four years later the club had made many friends but had narrowly missed out on promotion from Division 1 in each season. During the summer of 1999, the club revised its management structure, and decided to change its name to LONDON MACCABI LIONS, whilst retaining its all-Jewish status. Under the management team of Bobby Fisher and Adam Solomons the 1st team lost only three league games that season as they won the Division 1 and reached the semi-finals of the Aubrey Cup. The club grew into one of the strongest teams in the Premier League but had to wait to land its first major honour in 2007 when Lions beat Metropolitan Police to lift the Herts Centenary Trophy. This was supplemented by the Reserves who were also promoted as champions, in 2002, and made it to three Herts Reserve Cup finals, winning one in 09/10. After a decade in the Herts Premier, in 2009/10 now under the stewardship of Tony Gold and Steve Grenfell, Lions won the Herts Senior County League for the first time in the club’s history, winning promotion to the Spartan South Midlands League in the process. The following season – the club’s first in the South Midlands Division One – they added a second Herts Centenary Trophy beating Letchworth Garden City Eagles 3-2 in the final. Lions were able to go on better in 2012/13, winning the South Midlands Division One title and promotion to the heights of the South Midlands Premier Division. The club also made their debut in the FA Cup, winning 4-0 against Clapton. Now just one league away from semi-professional football, it was a tall order for a team missing a number of players who had departed following promotion, and so 2013/14 saw Lions suffer their first ever relegation at the end of a difficult season. Having steadied the ship, the club decided to return to the Herts Senior County League for 2015/16 in order to rebuild. Seeking to promote a new generation under manager Andy Landesberg, there was immediate reward by winning the Anagram Records Trophy at the end of their first season, with most of the starting XI having come through the club’s massive youth set up. We then achieved an unprecedented treble in winning the league, Centenary Trophy and, for the first time, the Aubrey Cup. The club was welcomed back to Spartan South Midlands League where we have won further honours in the shape of the Division One Cup (2018), Herts Centenary Trophy (2019) and Spring Cup (2021) while threatening to get promotion to the Premier Division before Covid struck. The club was reassigned to the Combined Counties League Division One in the summer of 2021 and we are again targeting promotion to the next step, as well as representing our community with pride. Hitchin Sunday League: Pied Piper and Arlesey Town into semis Cup competitions in the Hitchin Sunday League are heading to their conclusion - with some sides moving into semi-finals. In the second round of the George John Cup, Troll Campbell were at home against fellow Division Two side Hitchin Rovers and lost 3-0. Atletico 99 from Division One found their second round tie against Division Three side Lea Sports PSG much easier going and romped to a 7-1 win. In the quarter final of the Division One Cup, Pied Piper beat AC Malone 5-0 at home with some well-taken goals. That puts them deservedly through to the semi-final. Arlesey Town have reached the same stage of the Division Two Cup with a 4-1 win away to Buffs. Sandon met Stotfold Juniors in the first round and although Stotfold are six places below Sandon in the table, they managed to upset the form book with a 3-0 win. In league action, Coach & Horses were at home against FC Inter Malone and stayed on course to retain their Division One title with a 6-3 win. Squirrel Taverners moved up into second place thanks to a 2-0 win against North Baldock. St Ippolyts had a good 2-1 win at home against GSS and as a result move up a place in the Division Two table. The Cock won 3-1 against Ashwell. In Division Three there was a meeting of the bottom two sides as Cronies faced Kimpton and the latter returned to the bottom of the table following a 5-2 loss. An end to end first half saw Cal Taylor level the scores with a spectacular long range effort after the visitors had gone behind. The home side's lead was restored shortly after but was once again cancelled out when Nick Jessop stabbed home from close range following an Alex Jode corner. Six minutes before the break a poorly timed challenge gifted Cronies a penalty which was duly converted for a slender 3-2 lead. The second half, which has been Kimpton’s nemesis over the last few games, proved just so once again, although the big difference was the home side finishing the chances they created while the villagers failed miserably to find the target. Niche moved up to second place in the table after winning 4-2 away against Down And Under. Top of the table North Herts Hatters remain unbeaten but dropped points for the first time this season after their 0-0 stalemate against Khoi Khoi. The final game of the day saw Saint Evenage at home against Feed Up Warm Up and a 5-2 defeat for Saint drops them down two places to fourth. Arlesey Town. 1 MATCH Leverstock Grn. 2REPORT CHRIS STERRY Another local derby after our mini lay off this one had the feel of a "6 pointer" as Arlesey traveled the 5.2 miles up the road to Shefford. Arlesey had Kai Pitts-Lewis on the bench after he recovered from illness and also Josh Helmore returning from an absence. With Tom Millett unavailable and Zack Howell recalled to Stevenage manager Tommy Cooney made a start at full back. Arlesey started strongly as Eddie Carrington attacked to the bye-line and pulled a great ball back to Matt Gilbert who hit a shot that just skimmed the fat post when he really should have found the bottom corner. Shefford responded with a cross in from the right that found Sam Day who headed over the bar from a good position. Shefford started pressing a bit but Arlesey looked well disciplined and we're defending well to absorb the pressure. A good move from Arlesey saw Noah Mosanya feed Carrington who found Dwade James who held it up well and then found Mosanya who looked to have been brought down in the box, despite appeals nothing was given by the ref. Tommy Cooney received a yellow card soon after for not returning the ball on a FK which came to nothing. Arlesey gained a FK in almost the same spot just after well in their own half and this was taken to Montel Brown who slipped the ball into the box finding James who slotted the ball past Josh Mollson in goal I to the bet for 0-1 on 17mins. Arlesey were now looking confident and Bruno Brito picked up the ball inthe middle and advancing hit a 35 yard thunder shot that beat Mollson and crashed into the crossbar before going out. Another good flowing move saw Carrington again get to the by-line and pulling the ball back to Alex Taylor who fed it through to the overlapping Gilbert who put it into the net from a tight angle but before he could celebrate the O/S flag went up. A Shefford corner was headed well wide and a break by Dev Simms saw him put in a low cross that was well saved by Ollie Skinner under some pressure. Ryan Lewis had a long shot that was well wide as he was quickly closed down. A good ball from Brown fed in James with just the keeper to beat , he hit a low shot into the keepers legs when he really should have scored. Another good ball forward by Carrington was well cleared by Mollson as Arlesey pushed on. Another good ball from Mosanya found Carrington who attacked and crossed in to find Mosanya again and his good header went just past the far post. Mosanya looked fouled in the centre but the ref thought it was the other way and even booked Mosanya. Just before the break Shefford won a corner which was met by Charlie Milton with a good header but this was, well taken by Skinner leaving it with an Arlesey lead at the break. Shefford started the 2nd half with a good ball in from Milton which was well dealt with by Skinner. Brito won the ball well in the centre and found Carrington who hit a 25 yard shot that dipped in the wind and needed saving by Mollson pushing it round the post for a corner which came out to Mosanya who hit a shot that was deflected off a defender allowing it to be taken by the keeper. A Shefford corner was well headed clear by Yasin Boodhoo before as Shefford pushed forward Boodhoo was fouled from behind by Milton. The Shefford skipper then lost his head as he pushed over Cooney with a straight arm and as others got involved the ref tried to regain control. Although it looked a straight red for the push on Cooney the ref showed a yellow to Milton for the challenge on Boodhoo and also a yellow for the push so this was followed by a red card for the Shefford skipper. Arlesey made a change up front as Josh Helmore made his return and replaced Dwade James. With Shefford also making a change at the back. Taylor played a good ball out to Gilbert whoes cross in was well taken by Mollson. Shefford made a couple more changes while Arlesey replaced Tommy Cooney with fit again Kai Pitts-Lewis. Carrington picked up the ball and fed in Helmore who hit a great shot from the edge tha again crashed against the cross bar and came back to Carrington who recycled the ball to Brown who again fed Helmore, this time his shot was deflected for a corner that was cleared. Carrington put in a cross that found Mosanya who hit a shot from the edge that went over the bar. Arlesey replaced Brown with Joe Abe to try a slightly different tack. Shefford replacements seemed to have freshened them up as Kurms Alleyne wearing a strange number 20 shirt hit a shot that was saved by Skinner who palmed it and ex Arlesey player Diamagio Robinson put past the post. Shefford were pushing forward even though they were a man down and Arlesey started looking at the clock. Pitts-Lewis broke out well and held the ball down in the corner before winning a corner which was delivered in and taken by the keeper. Gilbert was booked for one too many niggles as he defended. From the FK Lewis delivered the ball in and it wasn't cleared as everyone scrambled for the ball before Robinson shot it over the Arlesey bar. Arlesey were now looking to defend their lead, a good cross in was well headed by Boodhoo to clear, and a deep ball in was well gathered by Skinner as the game moved into added time. A deep ball in was well gathered and hung onto by Skinner before Arlesey replaced Eddie Carrington with Euan Hove and in the 97th min Dam Day for Shefford was sent to the sin bin for obviously saying something. Another FK for Shefford in the dieing moment saw Mollson come up but Skinner claimed the ball and the final whistle went after 99 minutes for a great and valuable away win for Arlesey. This was a good performance that should have been more comprehensive but the cross bar was an extra defender for Shefford on this day. A proffonal looking performance from Arlesey to hang on in the end looks promising for the future.
