Arlesey Town. 1 MATCH Crawley Green 0 REPORT CHRIS STERRY A wet day and a wet evening made this a difficult game to actually get played but with the pitch being worked on up until kick off the game got started to prevent even further fixture congestion. With lots of games coming up and bearing in mind suspensions and injuries Arlesey brought in a couple of new players and rested others for this match in the Gladwish League Trophy. Arlesey started strongly, player manager Tommy Cooney won the ball and quickly found Josh Helmore on the edge of the area, he hit a strong shot from the edge of the area that was tipped over the bar by Adi Connolly in goal for a corner that was headed clear. Arlesey kept up the pressure as new signing Steve Sylvester won the cleared ball and played it to Rory Busby who fed another new signing Tommy Blennerhassett into the box and he hit a shot that pulled a smart save from the keeper. A cross in from Helmore was put out for a corner which was put out for another before being cleared as Arlesey kept up the pressure. Crawley countered as a cross in found Jimmy Doherty whoes shot was deflected past the Arlesey post. The corner in was well taken by Ollie Skinner. Another Crawley corner was well punched clear by Skinner as he looked to dominate his box, and another cross in was again well taken by Skinner. A FK well delivered in by Cooney found Helmore on the edge of the area, he put it back to Eddie Carrington who hit a tremendous shot that flew w0 plus yards and crashed off the crossbar and dropped behind the keeper and went in with Helmore making sure for 1-0 on 14 mins and a well deserved goal. Arlesey kept pressing; Blennerhasett fed Busby into space and he hit a good on target shot that required a good save from the keeper pushing it out for a corner. This found Helmore who turned in a tight spot and hit a shot that was deflected for a corner that found Blennerhassett who headed just past the post. A break by Jake Cowley was well stopped for Sherif Ibrahim also making his full debut, the ball came out to Joe Hankin who shot past the post. As the rain finally eased it was noticeable how quick this game had been but it couldn't last and the game settled down I to a midfield battle. A cross in from Matt Gilbert was half cleared to Noah Mosanya who was fouled. Cooney found Carrington from the FK and he gave it back to Cooney who hit a shot that was deflected out to Carrington who won a corner. This came out to Cooney who hit a good shot that again was well saved by the keeper going for another corner that came to Carrington but his cross went over the bar. Carrington picked up the ball deep in his own half and drove forward to the other end of the pitch before being fouled by Taylor Keely who was booked. Just before the break a Crawley cross in found Franklin Ojumobi but he headed wide of the target and Arlesey went in with a 1-0 lead at HT. The 2nd period started with a Crawley corner that was miss hit but well kept on at the sideline by Hankins and he put a great ball into Ojumba who headed well onto the crossbar and out. Arlesey made a change and Alex Taylor came on for Sheriff Ibrahim. Hankins had a long range shot but this was well wide as Arlesey defended well and closed him down. Dan Wappett went down injured and he was replaced by Tom Millett which caused Arlesey a bit of a reshuffle. A great ball in by Gilbert only just missed Blennerhassett before going out. Another good ball in by Gilbert was cleared to Blennerhassett who found Taylor who put in another cross butvthis failed to find the forwards and was cleared. A great strike from 35 yards by Busby deserved better as it just skimmed the post. Arlesey kept up the pressure as Carrington hit a shot that was blocked. A Crawley FK by Hankins was headed wide by Ojumobi and another cross in was well taken by Skinner as Crawley tried to counter. Arlesey replaced Busby with Joe Abe as they rotated the players. Arlesey were looking good, a good move through the middle saw Carrington find Mosanya who found Helmore but a tight O/S was given and a repeat of this found Carrington who shot just pastvthe post. Mosanya was booked for a foul. The FK was intercepted well by Gilbert who drove forward and hit a shot past the far post. Another FK by Cooney found Helmore who fed Taylor then onto Abe who looked to have won a corner but a goal kick was given. Another good move as Blennerhassett found Helmore who fed Abe who shot wide from the edge of the area. Blennerhassett played a good ball forward to Helmore who hit a really good shot that skimmed just over the bar. Another cross in by Carrington was well taken by the keeper. Another cross in by Gilbert was put out for a corner which Arlesey kept in the corner to manage the last few minutes of the game. Arlesey replaced the hard working Carrington with Montel Brown which ate up another few seconds. Crawley tried to push forward into added time but Arlesey were defending in depth and kept them at arms length to claim a 1-0 win into the next round and an away game at Potton. This was a good game on a wet night in front of a disappointing small crowd but they were rewarded for braving the weather with an entertaining game.

Arlesey Town. 2MATCH London Lions. 2 REPORT CHRIS STERRY A week of rain played havoc to the leagues pitches and that included Arlesey's but our ground staff got the pumps running to clear the flooding and the game was on by the Saturday although rain as we got to kick off time definitely didn't help. So with rain coming down and the floodlights on from the start to pierce the gloom Luons started with their passing game from the start. With Lions skipper fouling Arlesey player manager Tommy Cooney after just 5 minutes the ref gave him a "talking to" for a foul that probably should have drawn a card. Lions are a good passing football side and they pressed forward in the early phases but Arlesey were well set up and were defending well. Arlesey were looking to break out and a good ball from Eddie Carrington sent Montel Brown through but the Lions defender got there 1st and cleared the danger. Lions won a corner that was well cleared by Matt Gilbert and from a FK Zak Jackson tried to put a ball in but as Arlesey marked tightly it was too deep and went out.. Arlesey countered as 1st Brown was blocked and Carrington crossed in butvthis was taken by the keeper. A good ball through sent Dwade James past the last defender and in a one on one with the keeper, the ball slowed down on the edge of the area allowing the keeper to get out and block him with his legs to clear but really James should have scored. As the rain eased up a FK put in by Cooney found Bruno Brito who found the advancing Cooney; he put in a good looking cross but again it was cut out by the keeper. Lions pressed forward again,a corner was cleared by Yasin Boodhoo before Rob Cohen had a shot that was blocked before Ollie Skinner claimed a deep cross. Another Arlesey break saw Cooney play a good ball that again broke the Lions back line and found Noah Mosanya in the box, he hit a good shot that was well saved by the keeper but again this was a golden opportunity and he really should have scored. Lions were playing possession football in the centre of the pitch but went really penetrating the well drilled Arlesey defence, but as they keep probing they eventually put a good ball through feeding Jess Tapnack into the box he he fired a low accurate shot past Skinner into the corner of the net for 0-1 to the visitors on 32 mins. Lions were gradually forcing Arlesey backwards, a cross in from Jackson was well blocked by the hard working Alex Taylor going out for a throw. A cross in from Tapnack was well claimed by Skinner under pressure. On a breakout James looked like he was fouled but it wasn't given by the ref. A cross in by Loons was headed wide by Tapnack but initially a corner was given then eventually changed to the GK that should have been given. As the game moved to half time Taylor won the ball well off of Tapnack and fed the ball through to Brown who was fouled. Brown took the FK and although his low shot beat the wall it was an easy take for the keeper. The half finished with Boodhoo heading a cross away well and a Luons corner going straight into the side netting leaving then 0-1 up at the break. Arlesey made a double change at the break as Rory Busby replaced Dwade James and Kai Pitts-Lewis replaced Montel Brown. Arlesey looked better immediately as Busby was fed into the box and looked to be brought down, a very large shout for a penalty went up but was waived away and a corner awarded. This was delivered in by Cooney onto the near post, the keeper should have got it but he didn’t and it squirmed past him and sneaked over the line for 1-1 and a goal awarded to manager Tommy Cooney on 46 mins. With Arlesey now pushing forward Pitts-Lewis was very clearly pulled back on the edge of the Lions area but this was missed by the ref, the next tackle was a heavy one by Boodhoo and suddenly everyone erupted in a melee as everyone started pushing and shoving. Cooney went down in the middle of it with what looked like a head butt. Eventually as it calmed down the ref called his assistants over and they decided that the initial tackle by Boodhoo was a straight red card and he then booked both Ausin and Adam Lipman but that seemed to be a soft option on the Lions players and one can only assume that all of the officals were "unsighted". Arlesey had to reorganise and Brito came off to bring on Tom Millett so the defence could regroup. Cooney was then booked for not retrieving the ball quickly enough for the ref which again was debatable. With their extra man Lions could now develop their passing game. From a corner a shot from the edge went over the bar but they patiently continued passing the ball about while Arlesey concentrated on defending deeply. As Lions pressed forward Taylor looked fouled on the edge of our area but again this was waived on allowing Diamond to cross in and Ausin Lipman to head over the bar. Taylor was again fouled in the centre and this onexwas given. Cooney delivered in the FK which was headed clear, Lions then passed the ball around as before but this time they got it right and passed the ball accurately around through the defensive lines to Max Kyte who shot past Skinner into the net for 1-2 on 75 mins for a very neat goal. A ball that was hammered into Taylors face and which felledchim was shouted for handball from Lions players but this was rightly waived away but Lions were pushing forward to tryvto take advantage of their extra man, but again Arlesey were defending resolutely as Mat Gilbert headed clear well and Skinner made a good stop at Kyle's feet. Another good passing move from Lions fed in sub Rory Carlson but his shot went past the post. As time ticked to the 90 min mark Skinner made another good save. A Lions FK onbthe edge of the box hit the well placed wall and this was quickly pumped forward, Rory Busby broke out with it and with the Lions upfield and just his tracker with him the keeper came out and Busby shot from range past the keeper and the ball agonisingly slowly crept just inside thevpist for a great equaliser on 90 mins and 2-2. Into added time Busby found Pitts-Lewis who was fouled. The FK found Carrington who won a corner. Arlesey kept the ball in the corner eating seconds as they won another and again showed good ball management. On 9 mins added time Arlesey replaced Carrington with Sheiff Ibrahim for his debut for the remaining few minutes. With 100 mins on the clock Lions got a FK on the edge of the Arlesey area, this good shot clipped the wall diverting it and Skinner made great save to push it wide. Right at the end a long ball out found Busby and he tried another long shot with the keeper off his line but it went over the bar leaving the final whistle to eventually blow on 112 mins to give Arlesey a hard fought and deserved draw. This was a hard day but Arlesey put in the hard work to get something out of it and indeed really should have taken the lead before Lions got ahead.

Leverstock Grn. 2MATCH Arlesey Town. 1 REPORT CHRIS STERRY On a very wet and "loose" surface Arlesey lined up against 3rd in the League Leverstock Green for this away fixture. Arlesey were still without several players due to injury, suspension illness and unavailability but welcomed back Bruno Brito to the bench while Alex Taylor took the skippers armband. Leverstock made,a good start pushing forward with Arlesey defending well. A FK was well cleared and a home corner was headed well wide. An Arlesey corner found Taylor who put in a good ball that was headed out for another corner that was cleared. Eddie Carrington was fouled and the FK by player/manager Tommy Cooney found Carrington who linked back up with Cooney but his ball into the danger area was cleared. Carrington then attacked and beat 2 defenders and put a great cross in that just went over the top of Tommy Blennerhassett who was at the far post and went out. Arlesey were pressing forward and a great ball from Montel Brown over the defence found Rory Busby who attacked beating his defender and as he drew the keeper wider he expertly chipped the ball over Josh Bowler in goal and into the far side of the net for a great goal and 0-1 on 23 minutes. From an Arlesey corner Busby got to the header at the far post but his effort was just the wrong side of the post. Leverstock renewed their efforts, a deep ball in was well taken by Ollie Skinner. A FK in by Rio Beach was half cleared, what looked a great tackle by an Arlesey player saw the ball squirt out to Ryan Carruthers outside of the D and he hit a tremendous low shot past everyone into the net and 1-1 on 35 mins. A total mix up with the officials saw the ball go out for an Arlesey throw although the ref didn't see it. The assistant put his flag up for the throw but as Leverstock carried on Cooney was forced into a hard tackle that the ref blew for a foul. The ref then booked Cooney before shouts from the crowd drew this attention to the assistant who still had his flag up. The ref then 1st gave Leverstock a throw before charging his mind again to award the throw to Arlesey but it didn't alter the yellow card for the unnecessary foul. Leverstock pressed forward as the half drew to a close with a FK that was well taken by Skinner and Leverstock had a long shot that went over the bar leaving it level at 1-1 at the break. Leverstock started well again with a FK that was headed clear by the ever available Alex Taylor and a cross in was well claimed by Skinner. Matt Gibert was somewhat harshly booked for a challenge that left him on the floor rather than his opponent. From the FK the ball was put out for a corner when perhaps it should have been cleared upfield. From this corner Josh Dooley got in a header that was well blocked by Skinner but the ball dropped to the floor and was stabbed over the line by Luke Beckweth in the crowd for 2-1 on 53 mins. Arlesey tried to get back into the game with a great tackle by Taylor; he them found Carrington but his run was blocked. Leverstock were using long balls and the slope of their pitch more and more as Arlesey were pressing them through the middle. Arlesey replaced Montel Brown with Joe Abe to add fresh legs on the heavy pitch. A good move from Leverstock saw the ball in well blocked by Taylor, but the ball went to Beckweth who hit a good shot that pulled a really good save from Skinner pushing it wide for a corner that was delivered in too deep and went out for a GK. Tommy Blennerhassett was limping and he was replaced by Bruno Brito. Beach went right though Busby with what looked a bad foul and although the FK was awarded the defender escaped further punishment. The FK in was taken by the keeper. Lewis Collins for Leverstock cut in and hit a shot that was deflected past the post for a corner that was again well taken by Skinner. Another great tackle by Taylor got the ball out to Busby who put in a good cross that the keeper took off of Noah Mosanyas head. Mosanya had the ball in the centre and as he was tackled by a Leverstock player they clipped heals with Mosanya driving through. The ref decided that Mosanya who had the ball had fouled the player who had tackle him and booked Mosanya. Another Leverstock cross on was again well taken by Skinner before another good tackle from the tireless Taylor saw him find Abe who was promptly fouled by Beach and finally the Ref booked the Leverstock defender. Cooney delivered in another good FK that Steve Sylvester head just past the post. Another good FK in found Brito who fed it back to Taylor but his shot was high going over the bar. Arlesey were now pressing forward for the equaliser as the time progressed, Carrington cut in and was clearly felled on the dge of the area but nothing was given or even indicated by the ref, and a cross in by Abe found Busby who turned well and hit a low shot that was well saved by the keeper. The ref stopped the game with the ball in the air from a GK with the player not even at the place for a substation do that Leverstock could make a substitution which again frustrated Arlesey as time ticked down. With Arlesey pressing and Leverstock somewhat hanging on into time added on, the ref stopped an attack for something that wasn't at all obvious, Arlesey non the less were pressing forward all the way until the final whistle leaving Leverstock with a narrow win. This was a close call in the end with Arlesey giving this top 3 team a good run for its money, but unfortunately it wasn't quite enough. Next up Stansted are at Arlesey on Saturday for another "6 pointer" and it is to be hoped that the rain let's up enough for the Arlesey ground staff to again beat the floods and get the game on.
