Good afternoon and welcome to today’s league fixture against Crawley Green. It’s been a strange 6 weeks since we beat Crawley 3-1 in Luton in February. We’ve performed well in many of the 9 games since but fallen short in too many of the games. There are no points for good performances and we are all well aware of that. Last week was a tough one to take. We dominated the first half, missed a penalty and three other glorious chances and then got punished just before half time against the run of play. They had their chances but we weren’t really threatened before the goal. Our second half performance was poor. We couldn’t find our game and lacked composure. The two injuries and enforced formation change didn’t help that but we just couldn’t find our footing back into the game. Poor defending for the second goal killed the game. Today is the start of the final two weeks of the season. We have two games in 48 hours, which isn’t the best when we’ve been hit by injuries, and a growing list, but we just have to get on with the job at hand and make sure we do the right things when we step onto the field. We know what it takes to beat a good Crawley Green side, having come from behind to get all three points in February, but the boys are going to have to all be on their game’s today. There is no room for passengers or individual lapses in these final five games. Your positive support is going to be needed in the three games we have at New Lamb Meadow in the next two weeks so please get behind the boys and encourage them over the line. NICK BROWN
This is a poor indictment of the Council’s attitude to football in Luton, considering that other major towns in Bedfordshire have at least one team each playing step 6 or above. Their lack of support in comparison to the likes of Biggleswade (3 teams), Bedford (2 teams), Dunstable (2 teams), Leighton Buzzard (1 team) and Kempston (1 team), means that even our local leagues have the ignominy of having to travel to local villages to host their cup finals. Luton recently installed a brand new all-weather surface down at the training ground and to comply with national ground grading criteria Crawley Green will complete the remaining requirements. This will include new changing rooms, dugouts, turnstile and spectator standing area. Tony Talbot, Chairman of Crawley Green stated: “We would like to thank Gary Sweet and Kevan Platt and everyone at Luton Town FC for firstly affording us this opportunity and then their support in making this happen. “In the past we have seen a number of ex-Crawley Green players go on to play for Luton, but our partnership has really continued to grow in recent years. It’s with great satisfaction for us that we are currently seeing James Justin starring for the first team. In addition the recently transferred Tyreeq Bakinson and four of the current U18s team, Josh Neufville, Joe Mead, Ciaren Jones and Michael Shamalo all came through our youth system. “A town the size of Luton needs a successful professional club, as well as teams playing in the national league pyramid”. This gives our talented youngsters a pathway to development, without having to go outside the borough to develop. “In addition, underneath these clubs is a large community hub, which affords lots of youngsters the opportunity to play football. These community hubs ensure all young people have the opportunity to participate in football in a safe supportive environment, which preserves the dignity and respect of the individual regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, ethnic origin, religion, disability, income and any other social deprivation. With Government statistics showing a concerning rise in childhood obesity throughout the UK, these community hubs encourage our children to stay active and engage in physical activity. This all helps promote health, self-confidence and importantly social cohesion, and hopefully leads to the wider benefits in raising standards.” Hatters chief executive Gary Sweet said: “We see ourselves as guardians of elite football in our region and part of that responsibility is to help – wherever possible – other local, aspirational clubs develop and thrive, staying at the core of their roots. “The challenges faced at Crawley Green were difficult and, with the great relationship we’ve had over the years, having recruited numerous young players from their excellent development structure, we’re proud to help Crawley Green retain a local home for their competitive games, just as we are happy to utilise our existing training facility at perhaps the only time when it won’t get used.” In recognition of his services to the community and sport, Crawley Green Sports & Social Club Chairman, Tony Talbot was awarded a BEM – British Empire Medal - in the 2018 New Year’s Honours List. Finally Crawley Green would like to sincerely thank all their programme advertisers, match ball and match day sponsors for their generous support throughout the season. TODAY'S OPPONENT
Arlesey Town 1 Leighton Town 3 For the game v the league leaders the 1st challenge was against the wet weather, this battle was won leaving this the only game on grass in the area left on. A full strength Leighton side attacked and put in an early cross, Aaron Gooch went up with the forward and got the ball back to his keeper but he went down and stayed down. After treatment he had to leave the field with a cut on his head and had to be replaced in just the 4th minute by Adam Randall, not the ideal start. Arlesey pressed well; Freddie Stanley found Reece Crowter but his cross in was cleared. Arlesey had a corner and a FK in that were both cleared before Leighton managed to get out that led to a long shot from league top scorer Leon Lobjoit but it was well wide. Gabe Ryan fed Matt Gilbert in well and he was well stopped by a great tackle by Gary Connolly. A good move through the centre found Crowter who was fouled. The FK was put out for another corner that was put in deep and found Ryan but he put the ball into the side netting. On the counter a cross in by Lewis Toomey found Archie Mcclelland who shot but a great clearance on the line by Tom Millett cleared the danger. With the game developing Ryan found Crowter who crossed in, this came back to Alex Taylor who was fouled. The FK by Millett was well taken by the keeper. Countering Connelly put his cross over the bar and Toomey headed over the bar. A Leighton FK was cleared out to Freddie Stanley who was fouled by Jason Beck who was booked. Stanley received the ball and crossed in and the ball was dropped by the keeper and as the Arlesey forwards closed in it was put out for a corner. This was cleared out to Gilbert who crossed in and a shout of hand ball went up but this waived away. Just before half time the Leighton keeper made a clearance that went straight to Freddie Stanley; he took the ball and calmly shot it between the keepers legs for 1-0 on 43 mins and his 1st senior goal to put Arlesey into a deserved lead. As Arlesey looked to defend this lead "J.C." was booked for a foul. Moving into added time a great ball from Ryan fed Crowter through the middle but the keeper just beat him to collect on the edge of his area. Deep into added time a long ball out of defence from Leighton saw a low cross in from Toomey found Mcclelland who hit a low hard shot that beat Skinner and went into the net in the 45+3 mins for 1-1, which proved to be the last kick of the half. At the break Arlesey replaced "J.C" with "R.B". He started quickly with a lo g range shot that went just past the post. Taylor was fouled and Millett put in the FK but it was well headed clear. Leighton replaced Toomey with ex Arlesey player Arel Amu. A Leighton FK was shot wide by James Towell. A deep ball in was well headed back to his keeper by Luke Pyman. Matt Gilbert was unlucky as he received a booking as the player he was with looked to have tripped himself up Arlesey replaced Stanley with Bruno Brito before "R.B." looked brought down in the box but again it was waived away. MATCH REPORT CHRIS STERRY A good ball from Brito found "R.B." who fed Crowter into the box and he looked to be heavily fouled, a big shout went up for a penalty but again this was waived away to the utter amazement of Crowter on the floor. Crowter beat his man well and crossed in but it was cleared before Brito went down and needed treatment. As he was held on the touchline before coming back on he was out of position and Leighton won a corner. This was delivered and as the ball was played across the box the Leighton player went down easily and this time the ref pointed to the spot. This caused alot of upset from the Arlesey players and pushing about started and thecref booked both "T.J." and Connolly from Leighton. Eventually it settled down and Pyman stepped up and fired his shot onto the post but it went in and it was 1-2 to Leighton on 83 mins. Brito had to go off and he was replaced by Stuart Mortimer. An Arlesey FK hit the wall going under it and was taken by the keeper. From a Leighton FK Mcclelland turned well to shoot just past the post. Leighton were now using the time keeping in the corners and holding up the play. Moving into added time a good ball from Crowter just beat "R.B" going to the keeper, before a good ball in found Lobjoit who hit a good shot but it was met by a great save from Skinner. As Arlesey still strove to get forward and push on, a long clearance found Lobjoit running through, Skinner quickly came out to cut him off but Lobjoit won the race and put the ball over the keeper into the empty net on 90+8 mins for 1-3. That was pretty much it and the game finished with 10 minutes added time played. Another Frustrating game for Arlesey. They more than matched the league leaders but the penalty decisions were ultimately the deciding factor. A positive was Freddie Stanley's 1st senior goal and generally it was a very positive performance.
