Today's Opposition Colney Heath 1The “Magpies” were founded in 1907 and played their early football in the Hatfield District League and, after the 1st World War, joined the Mid Herts League, where the 3rd team played until recently. Earlier records indicate the winning of a Harcourt Cup but in is believed that this was Junior football some 18 month earlier, 1905-6. Earlier matches were played on two grounds in Coursers Road (the Meadow and the Warren). Success was a long time coming - 1935-36, and was disrupted by the 2nd World War. The golden era of football came from 1946 through to 1960 when the club won the Mid Herts Benevolent Shield twice, the Bingham Cox Cup, Division 1 and Premier Division titles. In 1952 the switch was made from Fuzzen Field to the Recreation Ground and into the Herts County League. Division Two was won at the first attempt and success continued with two Playing Fields Cups, the Aubrey Cup twice, Division 1 and Premier titles. This culminated over the Easter weekend in 1960 with the Herts Intermediate Cup and Aubrey Cup double. The Reserve side also completed a double in 1958 winning both Cup and League. During the emergence of Sunday ‘factory’ football of the sixties the club slipped down the reconstituted County League. Con Patient had a few years at the helm where he had an up and coming star in Ian ‘Grumpy’ Whitehead. Grumpy went on to captain both St Albans and Stevenage and later returned to manage for a year in the early 90’s. Another of Con’s stars was Tony Chapman, who must have had the longest throw ever. It is alleged that Tony injured himself slipping in the Marble Halls at Highbury when he was with the other Magpies, Newcastle! Geoff Blundell along with Jim Eames dragged the sides along after this with the assistance for a short period (6 games) of Ronnie Dukes. He was the famous City manager at the time of the Torquay United FA Cup tie. Torquay complained that they had no soap, so Ronnie took a case along for the replay. Malcolm Waller a centre forward under Geoff Blundell had a spell leading the side of mainly Hatfield boys during the 80’s. Geoff did provide us with the ‘legend’ who served us well before departing to play for and later manage Hertford. ‘Lege is of course Dave Whitehead. Dave scored over 200 goals for Hertford before moving to Potters Bar and then back home, where he continued to score goals until breaking a leg in 2002.. Tony Draper then had a spell before the most successful side of the late 80’s was managed by Ian Yule, who plucked stars from all over the place. He was a successful Sunday League manager but still ended getting the sack after failing to produce the goods with his aging all-stars in the Premier Division of the County League. Laird Budge (Spurs kit man) and Dave Lawrence ex City and Bishops Stortford skipper in their Trophy days had a spell before the club turned to ex Watford Coventry and Irish International, Pat Morrissey. Pat’s first job was to save the club from relegation. He kept the side up on a goal difference of one goal on the last day of the season back in 1993, at then Champions Sandridge, after being 15 points adrift at Xmas after taking over from Frank Patrick. Pat was unable to fulfil the promotion dream but did bring Cup success with Centenary Trophies and a Charity Cup. ‘Grumpy’ had a year then Pat returned from Hemel leaving us with ‘Shag’ Jeggo. Pat is sadly no longer with us. Darren, to give (Shag) his correct name did not really possess stars, other than Welsh International Malcolm Allen and a talented group of Stevenage Trainees, but kept us there or thereabouts in a plan to get us further up the ladder, both on and off the field. He introduced the club to ‘Sven’ O’Vell and since then between them the Aubrey Cup and the Championship, along with successful youth teams have provided us with what you have today. Geoff, like Pat gave us Cup successes and got us very close to the position we felt we ought to be in but handed the reins to Craig ‘Jonno’ Johnstone to pursue the grail. Craig almost single handedly fulfilled this dream in 2005/6 after an amazing unbeaten run of 18 league games (including 14 straight wins at the start of the season) that carried us to our first Senior South Midlands title. The title winning season saw us score 106 league goals conceding only 27, with 26 wins, 3 draws and 3 defeats. Going into our second Centenary having come a long, long way. The FA Vase was a regular feature; we had improved our league position to a best ever 3rd in 2013/14. We also won the Premier Cup in.2011. The managerial pair of ex-Magpie players, Scott Lacey (102 club goals) and Wesley Awad called it a day and we hoped to continue the pattern with Kevin Cooper and Glenn Draper. However despite their best efforts and an indifferent start we had to turn to the experienced local ex-pro Gary Phillips. In the past he had donned the gloves for Barnet before managing at Aylesbury, Hemel Hempstead and Grays before taking time out to refresh himself at the Rec. After a few months the ‘professional lure’ of a coaching position at League 2 Stevenage proved too much for him (and latterly Crystal Palace) and so we found ourselves with a Parry / Beels combo. Glen played over 250 games for Cheshunt before a caretaker spell gave him the whiff of a managers office and Mark was a former number one at Broxbourne Borough who actually won a Challenge Trophy success at Colney Heath over London Colney in 2010. he decision to null and void the seasons 2019-20 and 2020-21 and at a very late stage use points per game (ppg) over the two seasons and a restructure at all levels of the non league pyramid enabled us to be promoted to Step 4. The Southern League Central Division One in 2021-22. Proved a step to soon. Relegated back to the Spartan League but it was closer than it appears. We were also bundled out of the FA Trophy.so its back to the Vase. Ryan Thompson packed up a month too late maybe not quite giving Ant Burns enough time to turn it around. A poor start to 2022- 23 saw Ant replaced by George Georgiou. This however, despite staying up on the last game of the season was not what we had been promised. For Season 2023-24 we turned to Matt Day (a former Under 23 manager under Tommo) along with assistant from Sandridge Tommy Burns. Youth is back in the forefront as we try to climb back toward the comfortable regions of Step 5 Football.and all facets of the club. We are well out mask time and it is still hoped that when the Saywell’s, Kiff’s, ‘silver fox’ Morrissey, Shag Jeggo and the numerous Littlechild’s look down on us they approve of what they started and what continues today. After all, it’s still only a game!

Hitchin Sunday League: Arlesey Town progress in county cup Cup competitions took their place alongside league fixtures in the Hitchin Sunday League. In the third round of the Beds Sunday Junior Cup Arlesey Town were at home against Westoning Abbey and a solid performance and a 2-1 win for Arlesey saw them through to round four. There were two games in the quarter finals of the Carl Couzens Challenge Cup. Lea Sports PSG from Division Three were at home against Squirrel Taverners from Division One and there was no shock. Squirrel took control of the game early on and broke the deadlock 20 minutes in after Kwame Hoyte tucked away his first of the game. Minutes later, Harry Adcroft scored after some good link up play before Kyle Young scored two minutes later to give Squirrel a 3-0 first-half lead. The second period saw Hoyte get his second before Lea Sports pulled one back. By the time they got a second though, Young had scored and Sammy Nicholls got into the action for a 6-2 win. Saint Evenage from Division Three were at home against Division Two side Troll Campbell and it took penalties to see TC through after a 1-1 draw, winning 4-2 from 12 yards. The last cup game was in the second round of the George John Cup and Stotfold Juniors from Division Two beat Feed Up Warm Up of Division Three 2-1. In Division One of the league, AC Malone drew 2-2 with Chells Rovers. Malone made a flying start with Ben Fairey hitting the bar after 30 seconds and then the Chells keeper made two great saves to keep it at 0-0. The breakthrough came after 10 minutes, Fairey crossing for Vinay Virdee to score, but Chells hit back with an equaliser from Luis Mitchell. An even start to the second half saw both teams cancelling each other out until Ryan Turner found some space and restored Malone's lead. A late equaliser from a free-kick left the scores tied at the final whistle. Coach & Horses moved three points clear at the top of the table thanks to a 7-2 victory away to FC Inter Malone. Pied Piper were at home against North Baldock but despite scoring three times got nothing out of the game as North Baldock picked up all three points after getting five goals. Ashwell picked up their third league win of the season in Division Two with a 2-1 win at home to St Ipployts. Sandon moved to just two points behind leaders Arlesey Town with a game in hand after their 5-1 win against Buffs. GSS were away against Hitchin Rovers and their promotion hopes took a knock as they fell to a 6-3 defeat. However, the three points for Hitchin Rovers means that they leap frog over GSS into third in the table. In Division Three, Down And Under were at home against Khoi Khoi and jumped above their opponents in the table with a 5- 1 win. North Herts Hatters made it nine wins from nine and extended their lead at the top with an impressive 7-0 win away against Kimpton. The final game of the day saw Niche at home against Cronies and the former came out on top edging with a 3-2 victory By Neil Metcalfe Sports Reporter The Comet @NPMetcalfe 'Hitchin Sunday League: Arlesey Town progress in county cup (2023) The Comet, Available at: https://www.thecomet.net/sport/23990290.newmanagement-team-arlesey-town-aim-unite-community/ (Accessed: 23 January 2024).

Arlesey Town. 1 MATCH Leverstock Grn. 2REPORT CHRIS STERRY A tough week in prospect for Arlesey as on Wednesday they travel to 5th placed FC Romania and next Saturday 3nd placed MK Irish are in Arlesey but before all that 3rd placed Leverstock Green were at New Lamb Meadow. Arlesey introduced new signings Dwade James and Eddie Carrington to their new home ground for this game and had the low winter sun at their backs for the start of this game. The new combination made a promising start as in justvthe 1st minute Carrington crossed in and found James coming in on the far side who volleyed over the bar. Leverstock countered as Radu Stefanoaica won a corner. This was initially cleared by Zack Howell and put back into the mix but O/S was given as the Arlesey stepped out smarty. From a throw from Matt Gilbert James headed on well but it was well claimed by the keeper. A good strong drive forward by Howell was stopped by a foul and Ryan Carruthers probably should have seen yellow for the foul but got away with a talking to by the Ref.From the FK Montel Brown found Yasin Boodhoo who hit a good volley that brought a good save out of Josh Bowler in goal. A typically good ball from Bruno Brito fed in Rory Busby who crossed into James whose shot went just past the post. From a Leverstock FK Brito headed clear well to Carrington who cut in and was fouled.from the FK Brown made a good on target shot that the keeper did well to save and push round the post for a corner. This was delivered in to deep but Brito did well to retrieve it and win a throw, this came to Busby who hit a shot across the goal and past the far post. Arlesey were on top and Carrington beat 2 defenders and crossed a great ball that found James who hit a low shot that was again well saved by Bowler. Brown made a good run into the box beating 2 defenders before hitting a low shot that again required a good save by the keeper. Another good move found Alex Taylor who was fouled. The FK was again a shot on target by Brown and again saved by Bowler. Howell was again fouled and this time the ref had enough and booked Nat Connolly. This FK was headed out for a throw from which Brown won a corner that was cleared. From a Leverstock FK the ball was cleared by Matt Gilbert to Busby who played a great ball to feed in James intobthe box, Carrington was square for a tap in but he wasn't required as Jane's hit a low shot past Bowler into the net for his 1st goal for Arlesey and 1-0 on 33 mins. Leverstock won a corner that they played short but O/S was given as the Arlesey defence held a tight line. Connelly made a good run down the wing but was well stopped by a great tackleby Howell, he found Brito who cooly beat 2 players and put a good ball towards James which ended with a throw that was cleared. Leverstock won a corner in the dieing minutes of the half, this was overhit but retained and a shot was hit that was deflected into the side net for another corner. This was finally headed wide as the half time whistle blew. After a half time "talk" Leverstock started the 2nd period strongly . Another Leverstock short corner which was again overhit and went out. AA good cross in from Carrington found Busby who went down with the keeper at his feet but a FK was awarded to Leverstock. Brown cut in well and tried a long shot which went past the post before on the counter Gavin Seal workedvthe ball around Skinner but his shot was well cleared by Dan Wappett near the line on the cover. As Leverstock started to press a FK was well headed clear by Boodhoo, and Rio Beach attacked into the Arlesey box before hexwas well stopped with a great tackle by Wappett butvthecref saw this as a foul and a FK was awarded which Connolly blasted over the bar. A Leverstock cross in that just missed the man by the post and put back in for Beach to shoot wide. With Leverstock pressing Boodhoo headed out from a throw, the ball came to Beach again and again hit his long shot wide. The game changed on 68 mins as the ref pulled back the ball for a Leverstock FK when they were in possession. Nobody had any idea about the "foul" but the award was for a FK that was held up as Arlesey made a change as Brown was replaced by Ryan Richefond. Maybe this caused a lapse in concentration but with everyone expecting a ball into the box Arlesey left space in front of the FK and Dan Pett accelerated into the space and Hit a shot from outside of the box that bounced in front of Skinner and went over his arm squeezing in by the post for 1-1 on 69 mins Leverstock were awarded another FK on the edge of Arlesey's area soon after, this was hit through the crowd and well saved by Skinner but he was unable to hold it and it parried away and Luke Beckwith was on hand to push it past Skinner who was trying to recover and suddenly it was 1-2: on 76 mins. Arlesey replaced Taylor with their next new young signing Noah Mosanya before from a Gilbert FK the ball found Busby who headed wide. Howell was fouled again and the ref showed a yellow card to Joe Sadler. The FK in fro Mosanya was cleared by the away defence. Arlesey were pushing forward, a corner was cleared Rochford was fouled which produced another yellow card for Brad Robinson on the half way line, the FK by Skinner was put out for a throw as the game moved into added time. Leverstock defended in depth and when they gained possession they used up time in the corner. A final cross in from Howell was taken by the keeper as the final whistle blew. Another defeat but alot of positives from this game, the 1st 45 mins were one of the best periods of play from Arlesey all season and it brought a 1st goal for Dwade James on his home debut. 2nd period Leverstock who are 3rd in the League definatly upped their game but they were held until a couple of well taken FKs. Arlesey are now wondering why they aren't taking points of off teams higher in the league and points must surly soon come.
