First Lady of the Philippine Theater AN ACTOR, DIRECTOR AND WRITER WHO IS LAMBERTO AVALLENA ? Daisy Avellana and Lamberto Avellana, renowned figures in Philippine theater and film, crossed paths in the early 1940s. Montano’s pioneering of the Arena Theater has been one of the many changes in the Filipino arts scene in the 50s. It has brought theater arts as a form of entertainment and celebration of Filipino drama to the far flung barrios of the Philippines. The theater catered to grassroots audience, bringing theatre closer to the hearts of the Filipino masses of his generation. SEVERINO MONTANO the Titans of Philippine Theater Born on January 3, 1915 in Manila, Severino Montano is the forerunner in institutionalizing “legitimate theater” in the Philippines. Born in Taking up courses and graduate degrees abroad, he honed and shared his expertise with his countrymates. Severino Montano, renowned as a playwright, director, actor, and theater organizer, has produced notable works such as: "The Love of Leonor Rivera," a poetic tragedy in two parts. "My Morning Star," a poetic historical tragedy in three parts. "But Not My Sons Any Longer," another poetic tragedy in two parts. "Gabriela Silang," a poetic historical tragedy in three parts. National Artist of theatre in (2001) As Dean of Instruction of the Philippine Normal College, Montano organized the Arena Theater to bring drama to the masses. He trained and directed the new generations of dramatists including Rolando S. Tinio, Emmanuel Borlaza, Joonee Gamboa, and Behn Cervantes. He established a graduate program at the Philippine Normal College for the training of playwrights, directors, technicians, actors, and designers. He also established the Arena Theater Playwriting Contest that led to the discovery of Wilfrido Nolledo, Jesus T. Peralta, and Estrella Alfon. Because to his playright with 50 plays under his name and was founder of the Arena Theater. H was awarded the title Naitonal Arist of the Philippines for theatre posthumously in 2021. Montano organized the Arena Theater “to bring drama to the masses”. The theater opened with three one-act plays in 1953. The roving troupe took theater to near and far-flung barrios in 47 provinces across the country. SALVADOR F. BERNAL The Father of Theater Design in the Philippines Salvador Floro Bernal was born on January 7, 1945 from the Dagupan Philippines. His career began in 1969 and produce over 300 productions in art, film and music. During his education days, he received his degree in Ateneo de Manila University in 1966, where later he would become a professor and teach literature and stage design. What was he famous for? He was known for helping establish the PDC( Production Design Center) as a division undeer the late CCP Performing Arts Department which he lead from 1981- 1994. Bernal also initiated the founding of the Kapisanan sa Pilipinas ng mga Production Designer or KAPPROD, which later became the Philippine Association of Theater Designer and Technician (PATDAT). The exhibition is like a welcome back party, bringing Badong Bernal back to the attention of younger Ateneans. He's a famous graduate of the school who played a big role in making the humanities program and theater better. The painting seen here is part of Badong Bernal's exhibit. 10
AWARD AWIT AWARD FOR BEST ALBUM PACKAGE1992 Salvador Bernal's production design for the 1997 musical "Lapu-Lapu" is so dramatic and well-balanced that it is regarded as his best work. Legendary Filipino Composer ERNANI CUENCO Ernani J. Cuenco is a gifted compoBorn on May 10, 1936, he first started learning music when he first received violin lessons in his youth from his violin teacher, Jovita Tantoco, his mother Maria Joson, and his godmother Doña Belen Aldaba Bautista. After earning his bachelor's degree in Music, specializing in Piano at the UST Conservatory of Music, he went on to teach at UST until his passing. He was a member of the Manila Symphony Orchestra, Filipino Youth Symphony Orchestra, and the Manila Chamber Soloists. Not only recognized as a skilled musician, he was also celebrated as a renowned music director and film composer. In 1960, he was spotted by the famous film star and later president, Joseph Estrada, while performing with a band he co-founded with friends at a restaurant in Makati. This discovery led to a successful career in film scoring, earning him numerous accolades for his exceptional musical contributions. One of his most notable composing credits was for the movie, Diligin Mo ng Hamog ang Uhaw na Lupa, in 1975, which earned him a FAMAS (Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences) award. His other FAMAS awards include the theme song for Bato sa Buhangin, and the musical score for the movie, Bakya Mo Neneng, both in 1977. His time in the orchestra and the silver screen has earned him the National Artist in Music award in 1999. WHO IS HE? THE SILVER SCREEN 14
One of the most well known songs that Ernani has composed is “Gaano Kita Kamahal”, which is a love ballad made for the movie of the same name which was released in 1981 that starred Marita Zobel, Mario Escudero, Nora Aunor, and Lito Lapid, among other actors. Other credits for the song include Levi Celerio as songwriter/lyricist and Celeste Legaspi as the singer. The song would later receive a cover in 2011 by popular Filipino rock band Itchyworms. GAANO KITA KAMAHAL The Works of Ernani Cuenco Another well known song Cuenco composed that is also the theme song of a Filipino movie is Bato sa Buhangin, made for the film of the same name released in 1976, starring well known Fernando Poe Jr. Ernani Cuenco also made the entire score of Bato sa Buhangin, and it is through his efforts composing the score for the film that would earn him a FAMAS award in 1977. BATO SA BUHANGIN A lot of his songs incorporate elements of an traditional Filipino musical genre called “kundiman“. It is not only shown in some of his other works, but in the song Kundiman ‘86. the great man of Philippine letters F. SIONIL JOSE Sionil José, also known as Mang Frankie, was born on December 3, 1924, in Rosales, Pangasinan. At the renowned Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the University of Santo Tomas, he studied Philosophy under Professor Ariston Estrada and Literature under pioneering fictionist Paz Latorena. Sionil José was UST Varsitarian editor-in-chief from 1948 to 1949. Sionil José founded the Philippine Center of PEN International in 1957. In 1965, Sionil José and his wife, Teresita, founded the Solidaridad Bookshop and Publishing House in Ermita, Manila. F. Sionil José, a celebrated Filipino author, earned the moniker "Novelist Who Saw Heroism in Ordinary Filipinos" for his literary endeavors, which spotlight the resilience, challenges, and victories of everyday Filipino individuals. His novels and short stories vividly depict the lives of ordinary Filipinos, underscoring their bravery, determination, and integrity in confronting life's adversities. His characters often come from humble backgrounds, yet they display extraordinary strength and resilience in navigating the challenges of Philippine society, including poverty, corruption, and social injustice. In his renowned five-novel masterpiece, the Rosales saga—comprising "The Pretenders," "Tree," "My Brother, My Executioner," "Mass," and "Po-on"—F. Sionil José intricately weaves the tapestry of Philippine history, intertwining the personal narratives of the Samson family with the nation's social struggles across generations. V irgilioALMARIO Master of Filipino Literature WHO IS VIRGILIO S. ALMARIO? Virgilio S. Almario, also known as Rio Alma, is a wellknown Filipino poet, critic, and supporter of Filipino culture. Born on March 9, 1944, in Camiling, Tarlac, Philippines, Almario has written many poems, essays, and important works in both Filipino and English. He talks about things like who Filipinos are and their language. Almario got the National Artist for Literature award in 2003 for his big impact on Filipino literature and culture. He has also helped a lot in schools and groups that support Filipino arts and writing. 20 "Sonetos Postumos" is a book of poems by Virgilio S. Almario, written under his pen name, Rio Alma. It was published in 1993. In these poems, Almario talks about things like love, losing someone, and time passing. He uses language and poetry to show how people feel and think. Great Writer; Good Person ALEJANDRO ROCES Born on July 13, 1924, he has made several accomplishments in not only his home country of the Philippines, but he has also made achievements outside of his country as well. After studying in Ateneo de Manila University for both elementary and high school, he would later move to Arizona and study in Arizona State University, where his short story, We Filipinos are Mild Drinkers, a story about a Filipino immigrant soldier having a casual conversation about Filipino culture to an American soldier over some drinks, won Best Short Story. My Brother's Peculiar Chicken, another short story of his about the main character’s brother, Kiko, having a chicken made people confused on whether it is a hen or a rooster, was on Martha Foley's Best American Stories. His contributions to the world of literary art has earned him the title of National Artist of Literature in June 25, 2003. WHO IS HE? His love for the country is often shown through his love of culture. He especially loves fiestas, as shown in his book, Fiesta, written in 1980, it is a book that not only describes the happenings and festivities that would happen in the country’s local fiestas, it goes into what makes these fiestas truly special in the first place, especially when it comes to the significance they have in Filipino culture. His love of the country’s culture also extended to his respect for previous Filipino figures, such as the national hero, Jose Rizal. The story revolves around two brothers trying to figure out if their chicken is a hen or a rooster. After they let a rooster perform a romantic dance for the chicken, they got into a fight, and the chicken eventually laid after they mistakenly believed it was a rooster. "The Cat Who Knew Fernando Pessoa" is a short story by Alejandro Roces, about a stray cat named Tito who discovers the works of Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa.
