EMISSIIOONN CONTROL SYSTEMMSS
SOUURRCCEE OF EMISSIOONNSS
The combustion process prodduucceess carbboonn monoxide andd hydrocarbons. Controlling hydrocarbon emission is very
important because, under certaaiinn conditions, they reacctt to formm photocheemmiiccaall smog when subjecteedd to sunlight.
Carbboonn monoxide does not react inn the same way, but it is toxic.
Honnddaa Moter Co., Ltdd.. utilizes leaann carburetor settings as well as other systems, to reduccee carbon monoxide and
hydrocarbonnss..
CRANNKKCCAASSEE EMISSSSIIOONN CONTTRROOLL SYSTEM
The enginee is equippppeeddwith a closed crankccaassee system to prevent discharrggiinnggcrankcaassee emissionss into the atmospher.
Blow-by gas iss returrnneedd to the combustion chamber through the air cleaner and carburetor.

GENERAALL INFORMA lTilOONN
EXHAUST EMISSIOONN CONTROL SYSTEM (PULSEE SECONDAR Y AIR INJECTION SYSTEM)
The exhaust emission control system consissttss of a secondary air supply system which introduces filtered air into the
exhaust gasess inn the exhaust port. Freesshh air is drawn into the exhaust port whenever there is a negative pressure pulsee
innthe exhaust system. This charge offfrreesh air promotes burning oftthe unburnedd exhaust gasess and changes a consid-
erable amount of hydrocarbons and carbonn monoxide into relatively harmless carbonn dioxide and water vapor.
This model has the pulse secondary air injection (PAAIIRR)) control valve and PAIRR checkk valve. Pair check valve preventss
reverse air flow through the system. The PAIR control valve reactss to high intake manifold vacuum and will cut off the
supply of the fresh air during engine deceleratioonn,, thereby preventing afterburn inn the exhaust system.
No adjustment to the pulse secondary air injection system should be made, although periodic inspection of the com-
ponents is recommended.
