1st Place - Advanced Category

Aspiring Heights is a collection inspired by
skyscrapers. It was particularly inspired by the
transparency of their windows and the way
light and colors from the sky reflect off the
glass as well as their geometric architecture.
These characteristics were emulated with the
choice of color palette, fabrics, and silhouettes.
Juxtaposition was created with contrasting
fabrics such as chiffon and leather and with both
flowy and structured silhouettes.

A fashion collaboration between Express
and CARE to support and promote
women’s empowerment.

EMPOWERED WOMEN Executive Summary:
EMPOWER WOMEN While women’s rights have been making radical advancements for
the past few years, it is still evident that women are treated

BLOOM Bloom is a collection inspired by the blooms of a cherry blossom tree. The

QUEEN OF HEARTS Queen of Hearts is a street-wear collection inspired by the
Fall/Winter 18 card and character, Queen of Hearts. The collection
combines heavier fabric like black denim with lightweight

NCSU Fashion Exposè aesthetic. The final collection features hand-painted textiles
1st Place - Novice Category and playing cards in some of the designs.

Charline von Heyl is an abstract artist who creates graphic drawings, paintings, and collages.
She works with bold colors in all of her works and combines many different elements into one
painting to create interest. Her paintings are completely layered with both depth and flatness,
and organic and geometric forms. I chose to design a Fall/Winter collection for Topshop that
incorporates the bold colors, layering, and mixing of patterns in Charline von Heyl’s paintings.
I focused on color blocking and the mixing of contrasting colors and prints. While each look is
very bold, I wanted to make each garment wearable on its own.

Laser Etching & Paint Stick
The textiles, form, and colors of this garment
were inspired by the early work of American
painter, Richard Pousette-Dart. He often
worked with abstract shapes, strong contour
lines, and random gestures. Most of his early
work can be described as primitive and
mysterious. This piece is an interpretation of
his paintings in the form of a garment.

Unconventional Materials

This avant-garde garment was inspired by the
forms, textures, colors, and shapes of a garden
snail. This piece was created using only
unconventional materials including an exercise
ball, reflective plastic, bicycle inner tubes, and
cassette tapes.
