Xenophobic attacks
in Bolobedu South
Six shops leased to foreign nationals were
burned down by unknown people in Bo-
lobedu South recently.
The damage to the stock in the six shops is
estimated to be more than R1million.
Tzaneen police spokesperson, Lieutenant
Colonel Miyelani Shikwambana, said the
burning of shops leased to Pakistanians,
Indians and Ethopians started last month.
He said so far, two shops were burnt in
Relela Village, one in Moleketla, Motupa,
Mopje and Marirone.
He said all the shops were burnt around
midnight.
Shikwambana said the motive for the
burning of the shops occupied by the for-
eigners is unknown at this stage but police
investigations are continuing.
It is alleged that the people who burnt the
shops accuse the foreign nationals of driving
them out of business by lowering their
prices.
They say the foreigners lease shops in their
area and lower their prices to the extent that
no one would want to buy from the local
people owned shops.
Once the locals are out of business, the
foreign nationals return their selling prices to
normal.
He appealed to anyone with information
regarding the incidents to contact Detective
Warrant Officer, Elias Hlungwani on 082
963 1976 or Tzaneen Detective’s offices at
015 306 2000.
