Nobita Nobi is a ten-year-old Japanese school boy, who is kindhearted and honest, but also lazy, unlucky, weak, gets bad grades and is bad at sports. One day, a robot cat from the 22nd century named Doraemon is sent back to the past by Nobita’s future grandchild, Sewashi Nobi, to take care of Nobita so that his descendants can have a better life. Doraemon has a four-dimensional pouch in which he stores tools, inventions, and gadgets from the future to aid Nobita whenever he is faced with a problem. Although Doraemon is a cat robot, he has a fear of mice because of an incident where robotic mice chewed off his ears. This is why Doraemon lost his original yellow color and turned blue, from sadness. Nobita has three main friends: Takeshi Goda (nicknamed Gian), Suneo Honekawa (Gian’s sidekick), and Shizuka Minamoto, Nobita’s best friend and loveinterest. Gian is a strong, leading and domineering boy, but also loyal to his friends. Suneo is a wealthy and spoiled boy who uses his friendship with Gian to win the respect of other schoolmates. Shizuka is a gentle and kind girl who frequently plays with Nobita. Nobita has a crush on Shizuka; she is his prospective future wife (Nobita’s future wife is initially Gian’s younger sister). Although Gian and Suneo are Nobita’s friends, they also typically bully and abuse him. Nobita normally responds by using Doraemon’s gadgets to fight back against them, but Nobita has a tendency to get carried away with using the gadgets (or Gian and Suneo, if they steal it away), which typically results in unintended consequences for him and others. In addition to Gian, Suneo, and Shizuka, Dorami and Hidetoshi Dekisugi (common name Dekisugi) are also recurring characters. Dorami is Doraemon’s younger sister, and Dekisugi is a gifted student boy who as Shizuka’s close friend, frequently attracts the jealousy of Nobita.

CHARACTER Nobita is the main character of the series and the center of the story. He wears glasses, a red or yellow polo shirt with a white collar, and blue shorts. Nobita’s character flaws are endless: he is lazy, uncoordinated, dimwitted, frail, plainlooking, unlucky, and bad at sports. Nobita’s typical day consists of arriving late on classes, scoring zeros in his tests, getting lectured by his teacher, being bullied by his classmates Gian and Suneo, and getting scolded by his mom for his sloth. Shizuka, usually called Shizuchan or Shizuka-chan, is the smart, kind, and pretty neighborhood girl who is the object of Nobita’s affections. She takes baths several times a day. Somehow, Nobita always seem to unintentionally walk in on her (via the Dokodemo Door) while she is still in the bathtub. She is also known for taking piano lessons unwillingly, which is sometimes used as an excuse for declining to hang out with Nobita. Due to Doraemon’s intervention, Shizuka will become Nobita’s wife in the future timeline. Doraemon possesses a fourth-dimensional pocket from which he can acquire various kinds of futuristic tools, gadgets, and playthings from a future department store. Doraemon originally had ears but they were bitten off by a robotic mouse in the 22nd century. As a result, he developed a morbid fear of mice despite being a robotic cat. Doraemon’s favourite food is dorayaki, a Japanese treat filled with red bean paste. DORAEMON NOBI NOBITA SHIZUKA MINAMOTO

Takeshi, usually known by the nickname “Gian” from English word “giant”, is the big, strong, and quick-tempered local bully. He is known for his confidence in his terrible singing voice. He also frequently steals other children’s toys and books under the pretext of “borrowing” them, unless the toy is damaged. However, he does not hesitate to help them, including Nobita when they are in real trouble, which often occurs in the movies. Although Nobita is often blamed for the losses against the baseball team’s rival, the “Tyranos”, Gian and Suneo still force Nobita to play because they do not have enough players. Suneo is the fox-faced (inherited from his mother) rich kid who loves to flaunt his material wealth before everyone. He is often seen with Gian, serving as Gian’s lackey while they bully Nobita together. This is only because Suneo avoids being suffered under the wrath of Jian’s bullish trait. Some of the stories start with Suneo showing off some new video game or toy which evokes Nobita’s envy. In some scenes, Suneo is seen as a narcissist who loves to stare at himself in the mirror while telling himself that he is the most handsome guy in the world. TAKESHI GODA SUNEO HONEKAWA
