AWARD DESCRIPTIONS

PRESIDENTIAL TEACHING & RESEARCH PROFESSORS

Presidential Teaching and Research Professors, named annually to
three-year appointments, are nominated by administrative and
academic departments and selected by a committee of current
Presidential Teaching and Research Award recipients. They are honored
for their professional accomplishments, dedication to the fulfillment of
the university’s mission, and service to the university. In the first year of
their appointments, the Presidential Teaching and Research Professors
serve as marshals, leading the student and faculty processions at
Convocation and Commencement.

PRESIDENTIAL DISTINGUISHED STAFF AWARD

PROFESSIONAL STAFF

The Presidential Distinguished Staff Award-Professional Staff recognizes
exceptional performance, leadership, and service by a full-time member
of the associate staff. To be eligible for consideration, nominees must
have been employed by UMBC for at least seven years and have a
career distinguished by dedication to achieving the university’s mission
and goals, by professional accomplishments, and by service to the
campus. Recipients are nominated by their colleagues across campus
and selected by UMBC’s Staff Awards Committee.

NON-EXEMPT STAFF

The Presidential Distinguished Staff Award–Non-Exempt Staff
recognizes exceptional performance and service by a full-time
member of the non-exempt staff. To be eligible for consideration,
nominees must have been employed by UMBC for at least five years
and have a career distinguished by dedication to achieving the
university’s mission and goals by service to the campus. Recipients
are nominated by their colleagues across campus and selected by
UMBC’s Staff Awards Committee.

UNIVERSITY SYSTEM OF MARYLAND
BOARD OF REGENTS’ FACULTY AWARDS
Regents’ Faculty Awards publicly recognize distinguished performance
on the part of faculty members. This award is the highest honor
presented by the Board of Regents to exemplary faculty members.
The awardees are selected by the Council of University System Faculty
and submitted to the Board of Regents for approval. The awards are
presented to faculty members who have demonstrated excellence in
one of the following categories: (1) teaching; (2) research, scholarship,
or creative activity; (3) public service; (4) mentoring; (5) innovation. Four
awards may be given in categories one through four with the possibility
of one award in each category being designated for a collaboration.
One award may be given in the last category, innovation, for a total of
17 awards.

UNIVERSITY SYSTEM OF MARYLAND
BOARD OF REGENTS’ STAFF AWARDS
Regents’ Staff Awards publicly recognize distinguished performance
on the part of exempt and non-exempt staff members from institutions
within the University System of Maryland. This award is the highest
honor presented by the Board of Regents to exemplary staff members.
The awardees are selected by the Council of University System Staff
and submitted to the Board of Regents for approval. The awards are
presented to staff members who have demonstrated excellence in
one of the following categories: (1) contribution to the institution
and/or unit to which the person belongs; (2) service to students in
an academic or residential environment; (3) public service to the
university or greater community; or (4) effectiveness and efficiency
in academic or administrative transformation. There are two awards
given in each category—one exempt and one non-exempt—for a total
of eight awards.

DIANE M. LEE TEACHING AWARD

The Diane M. Lee Teaching Award recognizes instructional faculty
and staff for their work with students during their year of transition to
UMBC. The Teaching Award assists the recipient in their ongoing work
with new students. Awardees will share their experiences and teaching
strategies with partners working with first-year students to ensure that
new students achieve successful outcomes academically as they engage
with opportunities across campus. Awardees have made positive
contributions to learning outcomes that enable students to find their
own success as they transition to college through one of UMBC’s
first-year programs.

JAKUBIK FAMILY ENDOWMENT STAFF AWARD

The Jakubik Family Endowment Staff Award honors an exceptional
staff member who has contributed to student academic success.
Staff members are selected by the UMBC Staff Awards Committee
based on their innovative advisement, excellence in teaching,
creative application of technology, mentorship of undergraduate
students, or development of new programs. Awardees have
worked at UMBC for at least five years and have made a positive
contribution to student success.

KAREN L. WENSCH ENDOWMENT AWARD

The Karen L. Wensch Endowment Award for Outstanding
Non-Exempt Staff honors non-exempt staff who make outstanding
contributions in one or more of the following areas: engagement
in the UMBC community, dedication to UMBC, performance above
and beyond position requirements, personal commitment and
persistence to the employee's work, excellent problem solving skills,
high professional standards, community involvement off campus, and
advocacy for non-exempt staff. Awardees must have worked at UMBC
for at least five years as a member of the non-exempt staff.

MARILYN E. DEMOREST AWARD
FOR FACULTY ADVANCEMENT
The Marilyn E. Demorest Award for Faculty Advancement honors an
exceptional faculty member who has made outstanding contributions
to the mission of supporting the advancement of faculty members and
their academic careers. Faculty awardees are selected by a committee
of their peers based on their deep commitment to fostering professional
excellence and career advancement, and success at UMBC through
mentorship, collaboration, and innovative programs and services.

TERESA LUPINEK ENDOWMENT AWARD
The Teresa Lupinek Endowment Award for Outstanding Exempt or
Non-Exempt Staff honors one exempt or non-exempt staff member
whose work embodies the many outstanding qualities that Teresa
Lupinek displayed during her more than 30 years at UMBC. Awardees
are selected by a committee of their peers and have worked at UMBC
for at least five years.

UMBC RESEARCH FACULTY EXCELLENCE AWARD
Established in 2018, the UMBC Research Faculty Excellence Award
recognizes excellence in research and, where appropriate, significant
contributions to teaching and service or leadership by research faculty.
Awardees are selected by a committee of their peers based on the quality
of their research and its impact on UMBC’s success. Nominees must have
been research or clinical faculty at UMBC for at least three years.

2022 – 2025 PRESIDENTIAL TEACHING PROFESSOR

Tamra Mendelson

Professor, Biological Sciences
Tamra Mendelson is a world class teacher and scholar
in evolutionary biology and animal behavior. Students
and colleagues describe her as an enthusiastic, patient,
creative teacher who infuses her courses with humor,
active learning, and ample opportunities for student
participation. Known for her open-door policy and
rigorous approach to academics, Mendelson revamped
an introductory graduate course to focus on the importance of good writing.
She regularly uses technology in her courses, which eased the pandemic-driven
transition to online learning. Mendelson received her B.S. in wildlife ecology
from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and her Ph.D. in zoology from
Duke University.

2022 – 2025 PRESIDENTIAL RESEARCH PROFESSOR

Yonathan Zohar

Professor and Chair, Marine Biotechnology
Yonathan Zohar is an internationally recognized expert
in basic and applied aspects of fish reproductive
physiology and endocrinology. His groundbreaking
research has led to more than a dozen U.S. and
international patents and millions of dollars in federal
grants. He is the author of numerous widely cited
publications. As the director of UMBC’s Aquaculture
Research Center, Zohar mentors the next generation of researchers, including
graduate and undergraduate students and high school interns. He received
his B.Sc. in biology and M.Sc. in oceanography from the Hebrew University of
Jerusalem and his Ph.D. in comparative endocrinology from the University of
Pierre and Marie Curie, Paris, France.

2022 – 2023 PRESIDENTIAL DISTINGUISHED STAFF AWARD,
PROFESSIONAL STAFF

Michael Pound

Director, Environmental Safety and Health

Michael Pound is widely respected for his leadership,
innovation, passion for ensuring a safe and healthy
campus environment, and service to UMBC. He was
an integral part of UMBC’s COVID-19 response, often
providing support on a 24/7 basis. Pound led the
Incident Response Team’s logistics efforts, provided
guidance and expertise as a member of several
response and planning committees, and was a key member of the research
response team, ensuring that crucial processes and supply lines were
uninterrupted. He also created UMBC’s COVID-19 training and assisted with
campus testing and vaccination clinics. Pound earned a bachelor’s degree in
environmental science from the University of Maryland, College Park.

2022 – 2023 PRESIDENTIAL DISTINGUISHED STAFF AWARD,
NON-EXEMPT STAFF

Helena Dahlen

Executive Administrative Assistant, Division of
Information Technology

Helena Dahlen is known for her friendliness, positivity,
empathy, and ability to make others feel better about
themselves. Her patience and nurturing personality
make her an excellent mentor. In addition to her
work supporting the DoIT leadership team, Dahlen
serves the UMBC community through the Maryland
Charity Campaign and Retriever Essentials, and as a leader in the Non-
Exempt Staff Senate. She regularly volunteers at campus-wide events such
as Commencement and supported UMBC’s pandemic response by working
at on-campus testing clinics and serving on the Return to On-Campus Work
committee. Dahlen earned a diploma in marketing management from the IHM
Business School, Stockholm, Sweden.

2022 UNIVERSITY SYSTEM OF MARYLAND BOARD OF REGENTS‘
FACULTY AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN SCHOLARSHIP,
RESEARCH, OR CREATIVE ACTIVITY

Marjoleine Kars

Professor, History

Marjoleine Kars is an internationally recognized
expert on early American and Atlantic world history.
Colleagues say her rigorous research, creativity, and
unique perspective on her subjects serve as examples
to other researchers. Kars received the Cundill History
Prize and Frederick Douglass Book Prize for her
book, Blood on the River: A Chronicle of Mutiny and
Freedom on the Wild Coast, which examines a nearly successful rebellion of
enslaved African and indigenous people in the Dutch colony of Berbice from
1763-1764. In addition to her scholarship and teaching, Kars was department
chair from 2011-2018. She earned her B.A. in history and her Ph.D. in early
American history from Duke University.

FACULTY AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING

Lee Blaney

Associate Professor, Chemical, Biochemical, and
Environmental Engineering

Lee Blaney is a strong educator who engages, teaches,
and mentors students in the classroom, lab, and field.
His teaching philosophy is to provide a safe, yet robust,
collaborative learning environment where students are
challenged to think critically and outperform what they
expect of themselves. Blaney’s students describe his
style as approachable, challenging, enthusiastic, and respectful. He cultivates
curiosity in his students and seeks out opportunities to connect with students
and faculty across majors and departments. Blaney received his B.S. and M.S.
in environmental engineering from Lehigh University and his Ph.D. in civil
engineering from the University of Texas at Austin.

STAFF AWARD FOR EXCEPTIONAL CONTRIBUTION TO THE

Victor Fulda

Engineering Technician, Chemical, Biochemical, and
Environmental Engineering

Victor Fulda is a highly skilled engineering technician
who goes above and beyond each day, providing
valuable support to his department’s research and
teaching missions. Colleagues say he loves a challenge
and regularly draws on his professional expertise to
find or invent efficiencies. If Fulda lacks particular skills,
he learns them as needed. He has spent time and creative energy finding less
expensive sources for critical material, making his own equipment or repairs,
and developing workarounds that have saved thousands of dollars. He also
mentors students, helping them through challenges in the lab and providing
advice based on his experience. Fulda received his B.S.from Towson University.

TEACHING AWARD

Jamie Gurganus ‘04, M.S. ‘11,
Ph.D. ‘20

Faculty, Mechanical Engineering; Associate Director,
Engineering Education Initiatives; and Director, Center
for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning

Jamie Gurganus explores teaching and learning
through the lens of the stages students move through
as they develop as learners. She creates multiple ways
for students to learn, including active and problem-
based learning, service-learning projects, and peer teaching. Her creativity
and innovation helps students understand how they learn and what they can
accomplish. Students appreciate her ability to take challenging engineering
topics and make them fun and easier to understand by using real-world
situations. Gurganus draws on her own experiences as a woman in engineering
to work to enhance and change the culture from within. She earned her B.S.,
M.S., and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from UMBC.

TEACHING AWARD

Jonathan Zwi

Instructor and Affiliate Artist, Music

Jonathan Zwi encourages his students to think and ask
questions—skills that will help them be successful in
their academic endeavors and in life. He draws on his
experience exploring multiple disciplines in the arts
and humanities to help students practice these skills in
a variety of settings. Zwi’s students appreciate his ability
to make student voices central to the lesson and to
help them feel confident in their own abilities. Zwi received his B.M. in classical
guitar performance and B.A.s in cognitive science and philosophy from Indiana
University-Bloomington, and his M.M.s in musicology and classical guitar
performance and D.M.A. in classical guitar performance from the
Peabody Institute.

TEACHING AWARD

Mark Berczynski, M.S.‘17

Lecturer, Engineering and Computing
Education Program

Mark Berczynski is dedicated to helping first-year and
transfer students develop as learners and as UMBC
community members. Many of his students are still
deciding their future direction and learning how to
be successful in college. Through active listening
and open dialogue, Berczynski adapts his courses
based on student interests while still meeting course objectives. Students
say he is a caring, energetic instructor who works to engage all students. He
teaches computational thinking and the importance of communication and
collaboration—skills students will use throughout their academic careers and
beyond. He earned his B.S. in development sociology from Cornell University
and his M.S. in information systems from UMBC.

2021 – 2022 JAKUBIK FAMILY ENDOWMENT
STAFF AWARD

Danyelle Tauryce Ireland

Associate Director, Center for Women in Technology
Danyelle Tauryce Ireland appreciates the unique
qualities and needs of student subpopulations and
uses knowledge gained through her research to help all
students succeed. She advocates for transfer students
and is a recognized expert in the needs of underserved
populations. Colleagues say Ireland has helped CWIT
better serve all women and that she gracefully ensures
others understand alternative viewpoints they have missed or failed to consider.
As an educator, she uses a variety of techniques to help students learn. Ireland
received her B.A. in African American studies and family studies from the
University of Maryland, College Park; and her Ph.D. in educational psychology
from Howard University.

2021 – 2022 KAREN L. WENSCH ENDOWMENT AWARD FOR
OUTSTANDING NON-EXEMPT STAFF

Nichole Zang Do, M.A. ‘15

Program Management Specialist, Biological Sciences
Nichole Zang Do is known as a friendly, knowledgeable
colleague who goes above and beyond for her
department and UMBC. Seeking to help advise
undergraduate students not yet assigned an advisor,
she proactively learned the major’s requirements and
advising process. Zang Do has become a patient, caring
advisor, and now also advises the more than 50 students
per semester whose advisors are on sabbatical. In addition, she volunteers at
orientation, helping new students select classes and answering questions about
UMBC. She is also the department’s Maryland Charity Campaign liaison. Zang
Do earned her B.S. in public history from Stevenson University and her M.A. in
historical studies from UMBC.

FOR FACULTY ADVANCEMENT

Tamara Bhalla

Associate Professor, American Studies

Tamara Bhalla is a tireless advocate for faculty and for
diversity, equity, and inclusion. Colleagues cite her
kindness, generosity, and dedication to their personal
and professional growth, and say she is a community
builder, advocate, mentor, compassionate listener, and
beacon for junior faculty. Bhalla advocates on both the
institutional and societal issues affecting faculty. She
is a founding member and chair of the Asian and Asian American Faculty and
Staff Council and a member of the Inclusion Council and the CAHSS Women’s
Faculty Network. She earned her B.A. in English literature from Boston
University and her M.A. and Ph.D. in English language and literature from the
University of Michigan.

2021 – 2022 MARILYN E. DEMOREST AWARD
FOR FACULTY ADVANCEMENT

Margaret Holland

Associate Professor, Geography and
Environmental Systems

Margaret Holland is known as a kind, generous mentor
who supports colleagues’ growth as faculty and
community members. She shares experience in informal
chats and gives constructive feedback on papers and
proposals. In addition to mentoring individuals, Holland
has led shared learning sessions for faculty, staff, and
students. She is working to create a cross-institutional mentoring network for
faculty from underrepresented groups who teach and conduct research on the
environment and climate justice. She received her B.A. in physical geography
and environmental studies from Middlebury College and her M.Sc. in land
resources and Ph.D. in environment and resources from the University of
Wisconsin-Madison.

ENDOWMENT AWARD

C. Jill Randles

Assistant Vice Provost and Assistant Dean, Academic
Engagement and Transition Programs

Jill Randles is a role model, mentor, advisor, teacher, and
tireless advocate for UMBC students. As a campus-wide
leader, Randles has a wide-ranging influence on many
aspects of campus life and the student experience. She
is an important voice for students and her advocacy
is evident as she consistently puts ideas and values
into action. She has used her leadership and collaborative skills to create
programming fostering student success, including for the First-Year Seminars
and the Discovery Scholars Living Learning Community. She earned her B.A.
in business education and B.S. in equestrian science from William Woods
University and her M.Ed. in guidance and counseling from Lynchburg College.

2021 – 2022 UMBC RESEARCH FACULTY
EXCELLENCE AWARD

Narsingh B.Singh

Research Professor, Chemistry and Biochemistry and
Computer Science and Electrical Engineering

Narsingh B. Singh researches novel multi-functional
materials, an interdisciplinary topic that enables him
to collaborate with colleagues from across UMBC. He
has led multi-department grant submissions resulting
in substantial awards from public and private sources.
Singh’s extensive private sector experience enables him
to give his students insights into scientific research and future employment
opportunities in their fields. He earned his B.Sc. in chemistry, physics, and
mathematics from T. D. Post Graduate College, Jaunpur, Gorakhpur University,
India; and his M.Sc. in physical chemistry, solid-state; and his Ph.D. in
solidification behavior of eutectics from Gorakhpur University, India.
