7Unit 1 1.4 Reading Questions 1 to 6 Read the text. Six sentences have been removed from each text. Choose from the sentences (A to H) the one which fits each gap (1 to 6). Good morning, folks. I am Lizzy Tan of Lizzy’s yum.com. I’m only 13 but I’m proud to say I have a business and have been awarded the Young Entrepreneur Award for 2022. I began baking at the age of four. (1) So, I began my love affair with baking cupcakes from my mother. Before selling cupcakes online, I have been selling cupcakes during jumble sales. (2) I realised then that my cupcakes are bestsellers. It was then that I realised that I was able to turn my passion into a lucrative business. I decided to sell it online and have no regrets. In fact, the business has been very beneficial to me. With my cupcake business, I have financial independence. (3) It has helped me a lot. I don’t depend on my parents financially. I pay for my tuition, music class and even clothes. In fact, I am helping my parents financially by paying for my siblings’ tuition and clothes as well. Besides, I have learnt to be disciplined as I need to balance my business venture with my studies. (4) Luckily, I’m doing well at school. I have to work hard as I need to meet my clients’ orders. There are times when I burn the midnight oil just to meet the demands. However, luckily for me, the major orders are on the weekends. (5) During Halloween, I came up with Cookie Monster Cupcakes and also Bloodshot Eyeball Cupcakes. These cupcakes were a hit especially among teenagers. I would urge budding online entrepreneurs to be brave and take the plunge. If you have a passion for something, make it your income. This is because you will keep doing it as it is your passion. (6) To teens out there, don’t just expect your parents to foot your bill but help share the financial burden, too. A Most importantly, I have learnt to be creative. B I was amazed that cafes and hotels began buying my cupcakes. C My parents are very persistent that I keep good grades at school. D The road to success is never rosy but requires hard work and dedication. E My mum is a very good baker and whenever she bakes, I am always with her. F It was very successful as I sold all the cupcakes and people kept asking me for more. G Use the online shopping mania to sell your wares to make money to help your family members. H So, I have money to buy what I want, but I am saving the money for college education as it can be very expensive. U01 Topikal UASA A+ English F2.indd 7 05/07/2023 11:50 AM

50Unit 3 3.4 Reading Questions 1 to 6 Read the text. Six sentences have been removed from each text. Choose from the sentences (A to H) the one which fits each gap (1 to 6). You’ve probably heard your mother tell you not to cross over the baby because it may never grow tall, or to hang a horseshoe in the house for good luck. (1) Even celebrity athletes believe in superstitions to adhere to their success. Some sports personalities believe that their winnings have something to do with their clothing. Tiger Woods, the renowned golfer, has worn a red T-shirt, especially on Sundays since the beginning of his golfing days. (2) Serena Williams, on the other hand, believes that she would win each time when she wore the same pair of socks over and over again. (3) So, now you wonder, is it their skills that help them win or could it be their superstitions? Surprisingly, some animals are treated as lucky charms before a match starts. The Detroit Red Wings’ ice hockey team throws an octopus on the ice before the game starts. (4) I wonder how many octopuses have to die to ensure this ice hockey team wins the game. (5) The Chicago Cubs, a baseball team, blamed their loss on a black cat. The story has it that the team was leading a game during the 1969 season. However, during the following match, a black cat came running into the field and stood right in front of the third baseman, Ron Santo, who was standing in the batter’s box. (6) Logically, these superstitions do not make sense but the athletes swear by them. They believe that these supernatural beliefs help them win! (Adapted from: 26 Strangest Sports Supertitions [sportscasting.com]) A The team believes that each tentacle of the octopus represents one win. B However, some animals are not so lucky as they are considered a curse. C Santo’s performance in the following games plunged and the Chicago Cubs lost the game. D This habit, as he calls it, has been very lucky for him as he normally wins big with a red T-shirt. E Well, our elderly grandmothers and mothers are not the only ones who believe in superstitions. F Ice hockey goalkeeper, Patrick Roy, talks to the goalposts as he believes this act helps him defend the goal better. G Caron Butler, NBA forward, drinks half of a two-litre bottle of Mountain Dew before a game and finished the bottle at halftime. H Finally, Michael Jordan, the famous basketball player, wears his college basketball shorts underneath his Chicago Bull’s red and black shorts. 87Pentaksiran Sumatif Part 3 Read the text below and answer questions 17 to 24. A Realisation I come from a middle-class family. My parents’ monthly income is only RM5,000. Hence, we lead a frugal life as my parents have to save for our education and also for rainy days. However, like any other teenager, I aspire the good things in life like branded clothes and technological gadgets. I can’t ask my parents for money as they are paying through their noses for the neverending bills and ensuring there is food for all six of us. Besides, being the eldest son, I must set a good example to my younger siblings. So, I decided to work part-time to earn some pocket money to buy my material needs. After school I would work at a classy restaurant where I would wash the dirty crockery and utensils. It is hard work but I needed the money. So, I would work seven days a week for this cause. Many rich people come to the restaurant dressed in branded clothes and shoes, even infants. I would look admiringly at their clothes and technological gadgets. One day, a well-dressed couple walked into the restaurant, dressed in Gucci. They had a toddler dressed in Dolce & Gabbana. The parents sat in the restaurant and took out their iPhones. They were so engrossed in their phones that they did not notice the toddler moving towards the glass tanks where the live sea creatures were kept. To my dismay, the child leaned over a glass tank containing live crabs! As I feared, the child fell into the tank and the parents were oblivious to it! I screamed and rushed towards the drowning child and grabbed him. My scream alerted the parents who walked slowly towards their child. I was puzzled to see their reaction. The child was crying loudly but it did not affect them. The rich parents just took the crying child from my arms without even a word of thank you. I smiled at these rich parents. They can only provide designer clothes and wealth for the poor kid but not love. I am blessed to have parents who love and care for me. Indeed, all that glitters is not gold. I realised that day that no wealth can ever make up for love—love is crucial! Questions 17 to 24 Complete the following mind map.
