25 SPM PRACTICE PRACTICE 1 Read the passage below and answer the questions by choosing the best option (A, B, C, or D) for each question. 1 As a tropical country, Malaysia is rich in solar energy. The energy is renewable and can be used all year round. It is also environmentally friendly. The solar energy can be tapped by using a solar panel system. The benefits of using solar panel system are obvious. Many homes in Malaysia and around the world are installing solar panel systems to benefit from this clean-energy power. It is believed that Malaysia can produce 1.4 times more electricity if all the roofs in Peninsular Malaysia are covered with solar panels. Sadly, at present, only 2.3% of our country’s electricity is produced by renewable energy sources. The country’s energy production is still depending on limited fossil fuel resources such as oil, coal and natural gas. 2 The best thing about solar power is that it is unlimited, unlike some of the other sources of energy. Solar power will always be available. It is a green source of energy. If you want to reduce your carbon footprint, the best way is by installing a solar panel system on your roof. One big advantage is that solar energy does not pollute the environment. The only resources this eco-friendly solar power needs are the sun and a source of clean water to function. 3 Installing a solar panel system in your home adds value to your house because it saves money from your utility bills each month. If you decide to sell your property one day, your house can certainly fetch a better price. Recent studies by solar companies in Malaysia showed that buyers are willing to pay about RM62,000 extra for a home with an average-sized solar panel system. The appreciation of property value is due to the money the new house owner can save on energy in the future. Besides, you can be protected against the rising energy costs. You should know that residential electricity prices rise approximately 3% annually. So, when you invest in solar panels for your home, you are making sure your finances are not affected by the increase in electricity costs. 4 Malaysia’s economy can achieve better with solar power. When there is a higher demand for this clean energy, more companies will be needed to install solar panels. As a result, there will be additional jobs for experienced workers, keeping the economy growing. As the sun provides us with more power than we could ever use, no one can own and monopolise the sunlight. 5 Solar power will help you to save money from the moment they are turned on, and you will be able to see the best visible advantages in the years to come. The longer you have your solar power system, the more you enjoy the benefits of this technology and at the same time, support the environment. 1. In paragraph 1, what makes Malaysia rich in solar energy? A The sun is the nearest to Malaysia throughout the year. B The solar energy can be used in Malaysia throughout the year. C The solar energy can be tapped easily by using a solar panel system. D Its hot climate throughout the year. 2. The solar energy is considered ‘environmentfriendly’ because A it does not cause air pollution. B it is a natural resource. C it has a lot of benefits. D it is a renewable energy. 3. What is the sad thing about the use of solar energy in Malaysia? A It is misused by most people. B It is not as popular as fossil fuel. C It is not much utilised. D It is hampered by too much rain. 4. In paragraph 2, the following are the ‘best thing’ about solar energy, except A its reserves are infinite. B it is eco-friendly. C it is evenly distributed in most parts of the country. D it is a clean source of energy. Ch3_1202 QB English F4.indd 25 05/08/2022 2:38 PM

39 NOTES Chapter 4 Matching (Gapped Texts) 1. In this section, you will be given either a story, an article, a text or an extract. 2. Six sentences from the text have been taken out. Your task is to fill in each blank (gap) with the correct sentence from the eight choices given. 3. This is a test of proficiency in understanding, coherence, cohesion and text structure. Useful Tips 1. Read through the text to get a general idea. 2. For each question, refer to the paragraph where the blank occurs. Ask yourself, what is the whole paragraph about, that is, what is the main idea? Then, go through the eight sentences given. Choose the sentence that is the most relevant to the main idea. PRACTICE 1 Questions 1 to 6 You are going to read about kite-flying as a pastime. Six sentences have been removed from the story. Choose from the sentences (A – H) to fit each gap (1 – 6). There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use. For each question, write the correct letter (A – H) in the space provided. Kite-Flying as a Pastime Most of us have flown a kite, especially in the past. Flying kites is still popular in the country. Kite flying is a delightful and generally peaceful pastime. There is a wide variety of kites that can keep you interested and challenged. Kite flyers make the colourful kites dance in the sky to your delight. 1 [ ] Some move more randomly. Kite flying is a big thing in the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. 2 [  ] Kite flyers and spectators would take a short holiday to congregate to watch the spectacular show. The festival is held at the end of the harvest season in March and April. There are plenty of kite variations that can be spotted in different regions. 3 [  ] People usually prepare homemade kites, and for wau bulan it takes quite a bit of work. Wau bulan kites must resemble a rising crescent moon. Its tail is dyed to reflect sunlight and its body is often painted with floral motifs. 3. You should also read the sentence preceding the blank, then the sentence succeeding the blank. Can the answer (sentence) you have chosen meaningfully or coherently fit in the blank? 4. If the blank is in the beginning of the paragraph, you may have to refer to the preceding paragraph, and then the following paragraph. 5. Watch out for cues like pronouns (he, she, it, they, etc.), demonstrative adjectives (this, these, that, those) and sentence connectors (then, next, later, however, meanwhile, finally, etc.) 6. After filling in all the blanks, read the whole text again to ensure that all the sentences you have chosen are the best options. SPM PRACTICE Ch4_1202 QB English F4.indd 39 05/08/2022 2:38 PM

40 Wau bulan is one of Malaysia’s national symbols. The reverse side of the fifty-cent coin of Malaysia which was issued in 1989 features an intricately decorated wau bulan with a hummer on top. The logo of Malaysian Airlines (MAS) is based on the wau kucing. Another type of wau in Malaysia is wau merak. 4 [ ] Flying a wau bulan is quite an awesome task. When it is airborne, it makes delightful humming sounds. 5 [  ] It keeps the spectators captivated. Sometimes, the kites are engaged in war with each other. Each kite is pitted to cross the path of another to bring it down. The string of the kite is thinly covered with a kind of glass powder that can cut the string of another. 6 [ ] A Kite flying is a professional job. B There are kite festivals and competitions organised. C The most famous kite is wau bulan. D Some soar very steadily. E Wau bulan has been exported overseas. F The huge kite moves majestically. G The kite that remains flying is the winner. H Each wau has its own design. PRACTICE 2 Questions 1 to 6 You are going to read about the benefits of coconut water. Six sentences have been removed from the story. Choose from the sentences (A – H) to fit each gap (1 – 6). There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use. For each question, write the correct letter (A – H) in the space provided. The Benefits of Drinking Coconut Water Coconut water is a popular drink in our country. You can see people queuing up to take away their favourite drink at a stall by the roadside. The coconut water can be a great way to rehydrate after a hard, sweaty workout. 1 [  ] It is believed that the fresh, unprocessed coconut water has the most antioxidants and a true taste of the tropics. 2 [  ] It is not to be confused with coconut milk, which is made from water and the flesh inside of a mature coconut. Over 95% of coconut water is water. Despite its recent surge in popularity, coconut water has been consumed for centuries in tropical regions around the world. Traditionally, coconut water is believed to help with digestion and urination 3 [ ] While it may not be a miracle cure, it does have many health benefits. Coconut water is a natural health drink for the young and old. 4 [  ] For sportsmen, they must be aware that while coconut water keeps you rehydrated, it has less sodium—the main electrolyte you lose with sweat. It also has fewer carbohydrates meant for endurance performance which means it might not give you enough energy for a long bout of exercise. Coconut water has 10 times more amount of potassium compared to most sports drinks. Potassium helps to keep fluid and electrolyte balanced in the body, especially during exercise. Because there is more potassium than sodium in coconut water, the potassium may help balance out the sodium’s effect on blood pressure. 5 [ ] Ch4_1202 QB English F4.indd 40 05/08/2022 2:38 PM
