© Pan Asia Publications Sdn. Bhd. KM4 K1 – 6 Part 4 Questions 27 to 32 are based on an article about wooden clog-making. Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences A to H the one which fits each gap (27 to 32). There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use. Write the correct answer (A – H) in the space provided. Meng is probably one of the very few Chinese wooden clog-makers in the village. He learnt the skill from his father some three decades ago when he was a teenager and had dropped out of school. 27 This is because there is little demand and people do not wear them anymore. The reason for the decreasing demand is simple. Most people prefer to wear rubber or plastic slippers. These slippers are definitely more comfortable and do not make loud noise like wooden clogs do. Even the elderly people who used to wear wooden clogs now prefer to wear slippers. 28 Meng recalls that in the early 1930’s, his father made wooden clogs to support the family. 29 He wished that the family business would be carried on although the demand is getting poor. That explains why Meng still carries on the family business. To make the clogs, Meng buys logs which he chops into small blocks. He then carves it into the shape of clog of different sizes. He then paints the sole of the clog all by himself. Then he nails on pieces of rubber straps to turn them into clogs. According to Meng, he will probably be the last person making clogs. 30 “Some three decades ago, I used to make 40 to 50 clogs a day, mostly for orders from shops or regular customers. People who worked in wet areas like kitchens and markets wore these wooden clogs. 31 Ever since the introduction of Japanese slippers, the demand for wooden clogs dropped quickly,” said Meng. “I will keep on making clogs for as long as I can. I’m not prepared to retire yet. 32 But on Sundays, I take a break. My problem now is the difficulty in getting the wood for my clogs. Prices have gone up and there is not so much wood now. Despite my passion, I guess it won’t be long before I retire finally.” A According to Meng’s mother, the clogs brought wealth and happiness to their family. B It is indeed a dying trade. C A good pair of clogs provide a good balance. D He feels sad that it is no longer a good business nowadays to make clogs. E Most youths are not interested in learning the skill. F I am still at my workshop every day. G Slippers are much cheaper than wooden clogs. H A pair can last them at least four months, if worn daily. For a start, don’t study more than one hour at one go. Take a short break after every hour. Take notes and make use of mind maps. This will reinforce your memory. Don’t stick to one location for your revision. You can switch locations from your computer room to the garden, and from the garden to the living room. A change in location makes you feel fresh and more energetic. Don’t forget to exercise daily. Have a balanced diet and sleep early. You will feel fresh the next day for your revision. Revise consistently and regularly. Remember, no pain, no gain. Happy studying! Regards, Beng Part 2 Question 2 Helping Fire Victims Our Welfare Club sprang into action when we heard the news that a wooden house in a village was razed to the ground. Eight occupants were left homeless without their belongings. They put up in a community hall for the time being. We agreed that prompt action should be taken. We decided to donate cash, canned foodstuff, clothes, pillows and blankets. Having obtained permission from our teacher advisor and the principal, we put up a notice on the school noticeboard and made an announcement through the PA system. The next day, we went around the school to collect donations from the teachers and students. The amount collected was far beyond our expected budget including all kinds of donations. We were overawed by the generosity and caring spirit of teachers and students. A big thank you to all of them. After school, we visited the fire victims at the community hall with all the donations. They were greatly touched by our deeds. We were happy that our good deeds did not go unnoticed. ANSWERS Answer_Fast Track SPM BI.indd 1 10/08/2023 5:25 PM
