Details of the Journey:

 Student of Kathmandu Don Bosco College undertook visit at Modern
Slipper Industries, Balaju on Dec 7th 2016 under the guidance of Dr.
Jamuna Karki,Faculty member.

 We were divided in two groups and guided by Mr Kabi Shah
(Supervisor) for company tour and learned about production
department, about history and how company was established.

 It took around an hour for both groups to complete the visit and at
the end we get chance to discuss on company‟s matter with HR
Manager (Raju Aryal) .

 We exchange gratitude and Token of Love and returned.

Objective:

 Understanding Production mechanism and Management function.
 This visit has exposed all students with industry working

environment, Culture, Employee satisfaction and issue of the
company and future plans

Company Profile:

Main Building

Modern Slipper industries, under the corporate umbrella of “Universal Group”, the
company engaged in manufacturing slippers of different variety. Lunched in the mid-
1970s, Since its inception, company has established itself as the biggest footwear
producing group in Nepal. "Hathi Balio Ki Hathi Chap Chappal" -is a very famous slogan
among the users of this brand. Located at Balaju Industrial Sector, Balaju, Kathmandu,
Nepal.

Altogether it provides jobs to approx. 3,000 individuals. its subsidiary‟s company
(kiran Shoes) product i.e. Gold Star Shoes is becoming famous in India.Company have
always prioritize the quality of product for which the use best available technology
and better customer service to expand the business in to new market.It have formed
strong relationship around india and throughout the country.

Modern Slipper Industries, “Regd.No. 98405” is registered as Multipurpose-Private
company according Nepalese Company Act. According to which it can do processing
of plastic and rubber materials to produce footwear products. It imports raw materials
from China, Tiwan, Singapore, and India. It have recognized markets throughout the
Nepal. It have been able to run company smoothly without any critical intervention till
now. Company is able to handle their employee in very socialistic manner which is
one of the biggest challenges in Nepal. Though there are certain disturbances
sometimes due to load-shedding, Mechanical failure and employee absenteeism
company is able to produce 8000 pairs of slippers on an average per day.

Organization Structure:

The structure is very simple and most of the executive members are not
categorized, they just perform their task on basis of assignment. Due to
Non-Professional practice.
In spite of traditional structure, Modern Slippers unlike others never gone
in to the serious staffing problems.

Process:

Preparation

Packing Cutting

Finishing Impression

Manufacturing process is semi-automated, and it requires human
support at different steps of processing

1. Raw materials process/preparation: Balls of Plastic (PVC) and
rubber of different colour made ready for starting the process.
Balls are mixed accordingly for desired colour. And then sent for
melting

2. Cutting of Sholes and Ribbon: Melted PVC or Rubber are now converted in to
sheets , from which Sholes are cut in to shape and categorized according to
the size and design of the slipper. Plastic are set in to ribbon frame for
production of ribbon

3. Impression of logo and Sticker: Desired logo on design are impressed on
slipper by labor , known as primer and placed for drying.

4. Finishing: Here, shole and ribbon are jointed manually by labor to give final
shapes to slipper. and shorted according to sizes.

5. Packing: Now finally slippers are packed in to Plastic bags and placed in to
shelf
Note: Air blow Slipper doesn‟t requires steps 3 & 4, directly after melting of
EVA PVC and mixing it with calcium, it is framed in machine to produce
slipper directly.

Discussion with HR Manager ( Raju Aryal):

Group Discussing about issues and future plans of company
1. How do you manage employee absenteeism?
Ans: We generally keep 10-20 % extra staff to tackle with
absenteeism.
2. Doesn‟t it affects Productivity?
Ans: yes, speed of works gets decreased by 40-50 % by
altering staff from different section
3. Why Company doesn‟t have own website yet, even not clearly
mentioned on its Group website (Universal Group)?
Ans: Very soon we are going to fix this.

4. What are the future plans of company ?

Ans: Currently we are in the process of setting up Brand Lab

where team will be working on both the Kiran shoes and

Modern Slippers. we have realized the impact of E-commerce

and got positive result in the promotion of Gold Star shoes

and now we will bring that to shoes division as well in much

more systematic manner.

5. Does company have ever gone in to serious problem till now ?
Ans: Not exactly but two years back we had strikes but it was
solved soon with proper solution.

6. What would like to suggest us for our Industrial Visit
Research?
Ans: Sorry, due to privacy concern we are bound to share
much more information but I am sure you can extract
yourself by observation and analysis.

Group observations & learning's:

 Products are not competitive with existing slippers available in
markets and traditional marketing approach.

 Lack of Branding concept
 Permanent placement takes more than 3 years
 Lack of complete safety measures implication
 Staff they themselves are unconscious about health
 Poor working place/Congested
 labour were not satisfied with their payment system
 Environmental Pollution
 No Personal Website yet.

Our Experience from the Industrial Visit:

 See & Know‟ is better motto than „Read & Learn‟.
 After completing the industrial visit, we have upgraded our

knowledge at a very great level. It was a good learning experience.
In each & every department, we got some or the other new ideas
and new thinking which was very necessary for development.
 We have visited the entire process department. They are the best
technology (Italian) than any others company of Nepal.

 During industrial visit, we feel very much satisfied by acquiring
information of various departments & knowing many new things.

Conclusion:

 We conclude that, while going through the entire industrial visit, the
co-operation is found to be very well organized, developed & most
ideal industry in every walk of its production, administration &
management aspects.

 We extend our heartiest thanks to Modern slippers Industries . Ltd.,
Balaju, for making 7th dec 2016 a day to cherish for some of the
lucky students like us who are honored with your humble gesture to
get an opportunity to visit such an esteemed organization.

 We want to thank Dr.Jamuna karki for her guidance and KDBC for
