Tai Chi is an internal cultural art, a path to mental, physical and spiritual fitness and is a form of low impact exercise developed by the Chinese many centuries ago. The hand forms are the slow, gentle and flowing movements, often referred to as ‘meditation in slow motion’. Tai Chi emphasizes slow pace, controlled movements, and mindfulness, encouraging practitioners to be present in the moment, which aids in reducing stress and anxiety while promoting relaxation and mental clarity. It is a gentle exercise and adapts to whatever level of fitness you have. Although it is ‘only gentle exercise’, you will be amazed how quickly you notice a difference in your balance and flexibility. The practice of Tai Chi and Qigong breathing exercises help you to breathe properly, relax, gently stretch your body, improve your balance and help to deal with stress. This holistic approach integrates physical activity with mental relaxation and spiritual awareness, fostering a more harmonious and fulfilling life where body and mind are in sync. Its meditative aspect also helps in improving focus and concentration, providing a much-needed mental escape from the daily hustle and bustle. How can moving slowly help me be healthy, calm and in control? – Lower Stress And Anxiety – Reinforces The Immune System – Improves Cardiac Health – Helps To Reduce Chronic Pain – Helps With Lower Back Pain – Improves Arthritic Conditions – Helps To Lower Blood Pressure – Improves Everyday Physical Functioning – Generates a Feeling Of Well-being – Encourages Better Sleep Chronic Stress is associated with Heart disease, Cancer, Arthritis and a multitude of other conditions. The slow focused movements allow your blood circulation to feed all of the cells of your body with life giving oxygen. Your respiration slows and deepens helping to build your immune system. In a world that is increasingly fast-paced and stressful, incorporating Tai Chi into your routine can lead to significant improvements in physical and mental health. Whether it's enhancing life quality, feeling energized and refreshed after a session, or noticing improvements in balance and flexibility, Tai Chi proves to be a valuable addition to anyone's lifestyle. It adapts to whatever level of fitness you have, proving that even "gentle exercise" can have profound effects on your well-being. Come and try it out for yourself Tai Chi exercises are accessible to all ages, regardless of physical condition. They are relatively easy to perform and to memorize. You can come along to try one of Mats taster sessions on April 24th between 1pm – 2pm during our On The Edge Open Day event. Mats classes run every: Monday from 7pm – 8pm Wednesday from 10am – 1pm Website: www.banburytaichi.uk

, You don’t need to break the bank to feed the family, look out for items at a local community fridge or local harvest event. Quite often fresh is cheaper than tinned or frozen vegetables and cupboard staples like pasta and rice have a long shelf life if you can buy in a larger quantity. Save a few pounds and know the family is eating healthy too. Risottos are a great way to make a meal out of a few simple ingredients. You can stir in any veggies you have to hand. And if you’ve got some chicken left over, throw that into the mix to make this one-pot wonder even more satisfying. Vegetarian sausages are a slimming-friendly and food billfriendly alternative to meat - use them in a traybake using just one roasting dish (so less washing-up), there’s also no need to put the hob on, which means you’ll save on your energy bills, too. Win-winner dinner! A tasty pasta bake is the ultimate bargain meal. You can pick up a pack of penne pasta for pennies at the supermarket, then just tip in a can of chopped tomatoes and some frozen veg to create a filling low-cost supper. Stir fries are a great way to use whichever fresh, frozen or canned vegetables you have in, and egg noodles are super budget friendly and filling too! You can add chicken breasts and a top swap idea is to use frozen as they are often cheaper than fresh – and they keep for longer too. Spicy Tuna Pasta Bake Ingredients 350g dried fusilli pasta Low-calorie cooking spray 1 onion, finely sliced 2 red peppers, deseeded and finely sliced 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar 1½ tsp dried oregano ½ tsp dried chilli flakes 3 x 400g cans chopped tomatoes 3 x 110g cans tuna in spring water, drained and broken up into small chunks 25g reduced-fat Cheddar, grated Green salad, to serve Method 1. Preheat your oven to 200°C/fan 180°C/gas 6. 2. Cook the pasta according to the pack instructions, but for 3 minutes less than suggested, then drain and set aside. 3. While the pasta’s cooking, spray a large non-stick frying pan with low-calorie cooking spray and put it over a medium heat. Add the onion and peppers and stir-fry for 5-8 minutes, or until they’re starting to soften. Add the garlic, vinegar, oregano, chilli and tomatoes along with 200ml water. Bring to the boil, then gently simmer for 10-15 minutes. Season to taste, then stir in the pasta and most of the tuna. 4. Tip everything into a 2-litre ovenproof dish and scatter over the remaining tuna and cheese. Bake for 30-35 minutes. Divide between 4 plates and serve hot with green salad. If you Google the word ‘swift’ you’ll learn about bank messaging, caravans and a popular female singer. However, we have our very own Swifts here –they live on our streets and they’re incredible. Swifts are brown-black birds that spend almost their entire lives flying. They feed, drink and even sleep whilst flying. Their wings are swept back into a crescent-moon shape and they soar, twist and turn in the air at speeds of up to 69 mph. They migrate 14,000 miles each year– spending the autumn, winter and early spring in southern and central Africa but returning each year to their favourite places to breed. And some of those places are right around the corner… Swifts are part of a family of birds that includes Swallows and House martins. House martins are similar in size and shape to Swifts, but are white from their throat to their bellies, and glossy black over their head, back and wings. They have a clear white rump above their tail that is easy to spot. They build nesting cups from mud on the underside of eaves. There are some House martin nesting sites on the western end of Hanwell Fields and Hanwell View. SAVING THE SWIFTS IN OUR SKIES In contrast, Swifts nest out of sight, underneath roof tiles or inside eaves, and a few properties on Hanwell Fields have already been adopted by Swifts as their summer homes. On warm, calm evenings in June and July you can watch them flying low around their breeding sites like squadrons of jet planes, calling to each with excited screams. Swifts pair for life and feed entirely on insects snatched from the air. This makes them very vulnerable to poor weather and they will fly huge distances to avoid storms. Catching up to 100,000 insects a day, they’re the high-powered sports cars of the bird world. However, Swifts are in trouble – the nest sites they return to each year are often lost as buildings are repaired or replaced. As the nests are only in use for a short time and are easily overlooked, often people don’t realise they’re there. Alternative nest sites can easily be provided by special nest boxes or even nest bricks built into the walls. The Cherwell Swift Conservation Project has been running since 2008, with volunteers identifying nesting sites and helping homeowners, landlords and developers protect and provide critical nesting sites. You can help our local Swifts by: 1. Reporting nest sites or parties of low-flying screaming birds via cherwell.swifts.org 2. If you need to re-roof or replace soffits and bargeboards, get advice on how to retain access to existing nest sites safely – there’s lots of information at swiftconservation.org 3. Putting up Swift nest boxes; you may need to attract them initially by playing recordings of their calls. (Again, see swiftconservation.org for help.) 4. Making your garden wildlifefriendly by avoiding pesticides and allowing plants and shrubs to grow to encourage insects. Article by Kirsty Brannan

Hanwell Brook & Wetlands We're fortunate to have such a gem within our reach. Whether you're a local photographer, an avid birdwatcher, a lover of scenic walks with your dog, or someone looking to find a moment of peace in nature, the Hanwell Brook wetland area is a beautiful spot only a few minutes from your doorstep. The area is managed by the Berks, Bucks and Oxon Wildlife Trust (BBOWT), a conservation charity dedicated to protecting local wildlife and habitats. Wellies advised in wet weather! The Hanwell Brook wetland serves a crucial role in maintaining the balance of our local ecosystem. It's a safe haven for wildlife, such as birds, foxes, deers, dragonflies, damselflies, and amphibians and in the summer it is a wonderful place for butterfly spotting. In the summer evenings you will definitely see a rabbit or two from the adjacent field. Walking the boardwalk that takes you around the wetlands you will find a range of habitats including open wetland areas, beautiful reed beds and the pond. You will hear bird song as you walk around the boardwalk but listen out for the drumming of the Great Spotted Woodpecker up high in the trees. In the spring you will find a whole host of organisms emerging from the pond such as water boatman, ramshorn snail, common frogs and toad spawn. It’s also an attraction for other animals to bathe and hunt for food such as grass snakes, birds and hedehogs while the surrounding plant life gives refuge and shelter for the smaller animals. If you take a walk there, let us know what you see.
