A True Friend In The

The kids on the bus rushed off the bus as they were excited to get to school and find out
which class they were assigned to. It was my first day in this new school and I was going to enter
as a 5th grader. My sister, Julia was in 3rd grade and she was very eager to enter the school. On
the other hand, I was very nervous and my stomach felt like butterflies were flying in it. I was so
afraid of the thought of a new school so I went trudging off of the school bus with my energetic
sister waiting outside shouting, “Sarah, come quickly, don’t you just want to smell the fresh air
of our new school. It’s amazing, come on come on come on.”
Students Rushing Off The School Bus
I hissed, “I’m coming, can’t you even wait for 2 minutes?”
“Fine,” she miffed.
I slowly strolled to the new school and glanced at where everyone was crowding around,
the bulletin board. The bulletin board listed all the classes and the list of students who were
placed in those classes. At this point, I only desired to be by myself and trudge alone so nobody
could tease me about being brand new. I also really wanted to fit in at this new school. My sister
dragged me to the bulletin board though. She read the 3rd grade list and she was placed in Mrs.
Perry’s class. I read the 5th grade list and I was placed in Mrs. Harris’ class. "Yay for me,” I
thought very happily, though sarcastically.

My sister then started singing, “I am in Mrs. Perry’s class, I am in Mrs. Perry's class.”
I got so annoyed by her and demanded, “Be quiet, or you’ll make me feel embarrassed to death
here!”
She immediately halted for two seconds and commenced again with her singing. I got very
irritated and instructed her sternly, “I will get back at you today after school, be ready for it."
She was conscious that when I said something sternly, I will do something that she
dislikes and as a result she stopped the singing. I searched for my classroom after I led my sister,
who was as quiet as a mouse to her classroom. I peeked in at every single 5th grade class
however I didn’t find the one saying Mrs. Harris’ class. Every class had a different class theme.
My favorite was the Safari theme.
The Empty Hallways
However, I felt so lonely and got teary. I felt like a cactus plant alone in a barren desert. I
started to sob softly. I wanted to go back to my previous school. Finally, I caught the sight of one
girl walking with her clique. She was probably the head of her clique, I pondered. I decided that
she may be someone who could help me so I asked her. Maybe, I could be friends with her. We
could hang out and be best friends. Right? We could sit at lunch together..., I imagined. I will
definitely fit in if I’m friends with the girl from the clique, I thought.

“Uh, are you in Mrs. Harris’ class?”
Her clique snickered and scurried away which made me feel even more left out and lonely. At
this point, I didn’t even feel that I could fit in at this school. Suddenly, this gorgeous looking
girl sauntered by so I decided to inquire her. She had brown hair with honey brown colored eyes.
She was wearing a posh skirt and a formal top. She had flats on and had a bow in her ponytail.
“Are you in Mrs. Harris’ class, if not, do you know where it is located?”
She smiled sweetly and said, “I’m indeed in Mrs. Harris’ class. Come, let me show you where it
is.”
I was so joyful that my face beamed into the largest smile. “Thank you,” I cheered back.
I was so relieved that I found at least one person to show me where my class was and I
was so gratuitous that she was kind to me. When I made my first step into my class, my teacher
greeted me with a large smile, however I noticed that the clique was in my class.
My Biggest Smile
I quickly decided whether to sit in the empty desk or to ask the teacher where I should sit.
I should just take the empty one because what would the teacher say, go to the desk with another
student on it so I should just sit down at the empty seat, I thought. I plopped myself down in the

empty seat. Again, the clique snickered which made everyone in the class snicker except for the
girl who led me to the class. I felt lonesome again and I wanted to hide myself under a rock. Just
then, the teacher called me up to talk about myself so that the class could get to know me well.
"Sarah, can you tell us something about yourself?", Mrs. Harris called.
I wanted to sprint out of this room and rush to my mom. However I wanted to have a good
reputation in this school, so I got up slowly and trudged to the front of the room trying my best to
look courageous.
Me Talking In Front Of The Class
“I am Sarah Hamilton and I am from Alabama,” I mumbled.
Everybody snickered after that sentence.
“I was in Alabama Elementary School previously and my best friends were Kaylie and Olivia. I
have a sister in 3rd grade and her name is Julia. I am 10 years old currently and my birthday is
November 23. Thanks,” I murmured.
I immediately dashed to my seat. Just when, I thought I was finished, the teacher asked, “Thanks
for sharing some facts about yourself, could we know which class your sister is put in?”

“Yes,” I replied, “she’s in Mrs. Perry’s class.”
Everybody simpered except for the girl who helped me find my way to my class. At that
moment, I couldn’t believe that I forgot to ask what her name was.
Then, my teacher started to explain the rules of this class and what we were going to
study this year. She also instructed us to each tell our names to the class so that we could learn at
least everyone’s names. I found out that the girl who assisted me was named Ashley. She is so
kind, I thought. Next, we played some games to get to know each other and we created name tags
for our desks and cubbies to store our school items and backpack in. As always, I got put next to
the girl who smirked at me earlier when I didn’t know where my class was. I worked on my
nameplate for some time and after some time, I started to feel that I had completed my
nameplate. My name plate was very detailed so I decided to be finished with my nameplate.
Working On Nameplate
After I came to an end with my nameplate, I started to get up from my desk and go to the
teacher’s table to borrow some tape.
The mean girl came up then and said, “Why don’t you wear makeup to school? People look so
ugly without it.”

I started to feel left out again and wanted to hide under a huge rock. I said courageously, “I don’t
like wearing makeup to school.”
Then, she snickered quietly to herself as if thinking, What kind of girl doesn’t wear makeup to
school.
I just came back to the borrowing tape and then I started to adhere the name plate onto
the desk when someone came up from behind me and tore my name plate. I turned around
immediately, however I didn’t find anyone. I immediately started to march up to the teacher to
tell what had happened to my nameplate.
“My name plate was ripped by someone from behind me while I was in the process of taping it.”
She replied, “I will ask the class who is responsible for this. Class, who came up behind Sarah
and ripped her nameplate?”
Teacher Asking Who Ripped My Nameplate
Everybody was as silent as a mouse. It was pin drop silence. Nobody dared to speak a word.
“Fine, whoever has done this is lying which will give them an even bigger consequence,” the
teacher said angrily.

Suddenly, the girl from the clique said with a sinister smile, “It definitely wasn’t me, Mrs.
Harris.”
The teacher studied her in the eye but just resumed to the work that she was working on before.
Lunch was next. I had no idea where the cafeteria was located. As a result, I sauntered to
Mrs. Harris to inquire where the lunchroom is. She requested me to find someone to show me the
location. I slowly strolled in an undecided way since I didn't know who to question. Then, I
remembered who had helped me find my way to my classroom. I should ask Ashley, I murmured
to myself.
I advanced towards Ashley and asked, "Can you show me where the cafeteria is?"
"Sure," she answered.
I felt that she responded in a way that shows that she didn't want to show me. She made
me wonder whether she really enjoyed my company or if she was just trying to be kind since I
was new to the school. Anyway without letting that bother me, I followed her to the cafeteria.
Her friend named Kaitlyn walked with her.
Me looking for someone to sit next to
Then, I heard Kaitlyn whisper, “Why are you being kind to her?”

“Because she's new to this school,” Ashley said.
I felt lonely and punched in the stomach because just when I thought someone would be
my friend, they aren't. Without letting that bother me, I treaded slowly into the cafeteria. I joined
the line to buy lunch. The line looked like a stampede of horses rushing from different directions.
I slowly strolled to the line for lunch. I was in line when someone shoved me. Ashley, then
sprinted towards me and concerningly said, "Are you okay? I noticed that someone from the
clique pushed you. So, what are you going to buy for lunch?" she asked.
“I’m okay. I’m buying Coleslaw salad and french fries,” I answered.
Then she happily said, "That's what I'm also going to buy. We're twins!"
I quickly thought what to reply so that I can keep her as my friend when the lunch lady yelled
over the commotion of the cafeteria.
"What do you want?" at me.
I shouted, "Coleslaw and french fries please."
My Coleslaw Salad
Then, she passed the two items and I went to the paying counter. It was a total of $10.
Wow, it's expensive here, I thought to myself. Then, I had to find someone to sit next to. Just
when I was thinking about it, Ashley asked, "You want to sit by me and Kaitlyn today?" I

joyfully answered, “Sure, I would love to.” I trotted behind Ashley to their lunch table in a joyful
mood. One thing that I disliked though was sitting next to Kaitlyn.
“Why is she following you everywhere, Ashley?” she whispered.
Ashley exclaimed, "She's my friend and friends are always together."
Me and Ashley
I wanted to say something however I decided to keep silent so that I won't get into the middle of
this.
"Fine, but only for today," Kaitlyn said.
"We'll see about that," Ashley replied unsurely.
I took a seat and started gobbling down my food since my stomach was grumbling since
morning. I wanted to talk to Ashley so that I could get to know her better and become great
friends with her however with her friend Kaitlyn around, I didn’t feel that I could become friends
with her.
After lunch, I ventured outside since everyone else was speeding in that direction. I
decided to follow them instead of making a big fool out of myself when trying to go to a place

where no one was heading to. However once I got outside, I realized that I didn’t know who to
hang out with. Then, I strode towards Ashley to ask her.
“Do you want to hangout?”
She answered, “Sure, why not.”
She really likes me, I thought. We both sprinted towards the swings so that we could feel the
breeze on the sunny day. Suddenly, there was a noisy sound coming from the east from where
we were swinging. I glanced quickly and the P.E. teacher was blowing her whistle as hard as she
could.
Swings at Our School
“Come on, let’s get back to class quickly before we’re tardy,” I exclaimed.
I quickly lept off my swing and started heading back to my class with Ashley. Ashley and
I trotted all the way to the classroom chatting away about random things. One thing that I noticed
about Ashley was that she changes topics a lot and in a way, it’s a great thing. We sauntered very
happily into the class as Kaitlyn showed the stink eye at me which made me feel lonely again.
All of a sudden, I realized, I didn't need to be liked by everyone just like I desired earlier. I could

be a girl who has one true friend by the name of Ashley who could help me whenever I am in
need.
