In this video, we can see that the speaker, Cynthia Thurlow used the method of question
the audience at the beginning of the speech. There are two questions that she asked the
audience. When she was on the stage, she asked the audience the first question which is "What
if I told you that breakfast being the most important meal of the day was wrong?"(0.14) After
that, she did not continue her speech immediately instead of paused for a few seconds. Then,
we can hear the laughter from the audience. This action gave the question time to sink in and
lead to a more dramatic impact. She has gained the audiences' attention. After the first question,
she continued with her second question which is "What if I told you it is more important when
you eat than what you eat?"(0.27) A series of questions asked from Cynthia Thurlow has drawn
the audience deeper and deeper into the speech.
Furthermore, I found that Cynthia Thurlow has used a technique of arouse the curiosity of
the audience. In the last paragraph, we said that Cynthia Thurlow has asked some questions.
Those of the questions have aroused the interest of audience. The audience might have a
question mark in their mind and want to ask about why. After that, she said "Perhaps much of
the nutritional dogma that we've been raised with is now outdated. Like snaking all day long
and eating many meals."(0.38) By asking questions and using this statement, she has built
suspense about the profoundly transformational concept and strategy of health and aging and
pulled her audience into the speech. The audience were more interested in listening and wanted
to get the answer from her speech.
In the video, Cynthia Thurlow said that "Over the last 20 years as a nurse practitioner and
a functional nutritionist, I've seen tremendous shifts, tremendous shifts in health and wellness:
escalating rates of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease- many of which are preventable.
The choices we make in terms of nutrition are profoundly impactful on our health, more than
most of us realize."(0.56) From these passages, she has stated the importance of her topic. She
tried to inform the audience about why she chose this topic and also let the audience know
about the diseases that can be prevented through the choice they make in terms of nutrition. On
the other hand, the audience knew about Cynthia Thurlow chosen this topic because of the high
rates of diseases, and even they did not realize that they can prevent it from the nutrition they
take from. Other than this, she also used her own experiences to highlight that the dominant
nutritional paradigm and concept of "calories-in, calories-out" is ineffective in 1.21 of the
video.
Cynthia Thurlow has established her credibility. In my opinion, she used initial credibility and
delivered credibility.
As we know, Cynthia Thurlow is a globally recognized expert in nutrition and intermittent
fasting. Therefore, she also is a nurse practitioner, entrepreneur, and functional nutritionist. As
an expert in nutrition and intermittent fasting, giving a speech in this aspect is convincing. Her
audience know her speech will be going to be highly valuable even before her speech starts.
Furthermore, she also used delivered credibility by explained her competence in
beginning. She has emphasized her background and personal experiences. For example, she
said that "Over the last 20 years as a nurse practitioner and a functional nutritionist, I've seen
tremendous shifts, tremendous shifts in health and wellness: escalating rates of obesity,
diabetes and cardiovascular disease- many of which are preventable."(0.56) From this
statement, her audience has known about she has been a nurse practitioner for around 20 years
and this made her speech looked more persuasive. In another statement, "During my training
as a nurse practitioner many years ago, the dominant nutritional paradigm was exercise more,
eat less......" (1.22) She talked about her training experiences as a nurse practitioner, and based
on her experiences she found that exercise more, eat less is inefficient. Both of these statements
have increased her persuasiveness by establishing her credibility and she was being perceived
as qualified by her audience.
Besides, Cynthia Thurlow also delivered her speech in good way. Her speed is moderately
fast and vocal variety. It made her looked full of confidence when gave her speech. She did not
hesitate at all and delivered her speech fluently and expressively. In 12.03 of the video, she
said that “I have a fantastic strategy to help with this, but I don't want you to buy into the next
$50 container of protein powder or the hottest weight loss supplement that's out there. I want
you to think about the fact this is a simple, flexible, and free option that you can try at home,
discuss with your health care provider if necessary. I really feel so passionately about this it's
something that all of us should be discussing with our patients. "(12.03) From this statement,
we can see that she tried to bring her spirit, enthusiasm, and conviction to her audience. She
wanted her audience to use the strategy she introduced instead of going to buy any weight loss
supplement and protein for losing weight purposes. That sounds like she wanted to help her
audience those who are always using the wrong way to lose weight. By trying to inform the
audience about the fantastic strategy that can bring benefits to them, the audience has felt she
was sincere and honest. And all of these have helped her to strengthen her credibility and her
persuasiveness.
In speech of Intermittent Fasting: Transformational Techniques, the first main point that
Cynthia Thurlow mentions at is how frequently we’re eating (3.10). She recommends that the
typical time frame that to her female patients is 16:8. Sixteen hours a day fasted with an eight-
hour feeding window. As a nurse practitioner and wellness expert, she uses brief examples to
the audience for supporting her point that the debate over sugar burners versus fat burners by
saying that, “A sugar burner is someone that consumes lots of carbohydrates and taps into
glucose as their primary fuel source, which is incredibly inefficient. They are frequently
hungry. They often get hangry. They have significant dips in their energy level. They struggle
more with fat loss, and they struggle more with their weight because insulin levels are high.
Insulin is that fat-storing hormone. So if levels remain high, you have more oxidative stress;
you have more inflammation; and we struggle more with weight gain. The 20-40 percent
reduction in calories means that you can fuel fat loss.” She also adds there are some of the
benefits other than fat loss by saying, “We know that it improves mental clarity because insulin
levels are low. We know that it spikes human growth hormone, which helps us with lean muscle
mass. We know that it induces something called autophagy”.
The second point that Cynthia gives is there are foods that are going to be more
advantageous to consume when we’re ready to break our fast (9.50). She gives the brief
example by telling the audience to have the best quality of protein. Ideally, organic or pastured
meat or wild-caught fish. It helpful for building healthy hormones and also really important for
satiety. Avocados, coconut oil, grass-fed butter and nuts really great for healthy fats and
unprocessed carbohydrates. As an expert, she also tells that absolutely crucial for women in
perimenopause, the five to seven years before menopause, or they are in menopause, quality
and quantity are crucial. So she recommends them to consume things like low-glycaemic
berries, green leafy vegetables, squash, quinoa, sweet potatoes as opposed to bread and pasta.
She also mentions to limit sugar and alcohol.
And lastly the main point that she gives is keep our self well hydrated (11.11). She
supported her point by using testimony. She paraphrases from peer testimony which are her
patients’ ideas by saying “I have my ladies start with 12-13 hours of fasted period. And they
can slowly increase by an hour or so every day until they’ve reached that 16-hour mark”.
The type organization does the speaker use is topical order. She divides her speech topic
into subtopics, each becomes a main point in the speech. The speaker describes the Intermittent
fasting: transformational technique involves the separate components of how frequently we’re
eating, there are foods that are going to be more advantageous to consume when we’re ready
to break our fast and keep our self well hydrated.
Through her speech, Cynthia Thurlow, the professional speaker uses a multiple resources
language for their speech. Besides, she uses good language and suitable or fitting for ourselves,
as speaker, our audience, the speaking context and the speech itself. In my view, it is important
to use language clearly because we did not the audience races, ages, genders, religions and etc.
For example, one of the biggest mistakes novice speakers make is thinking that they have to
use million-dollar words because it makes them sound smarter. You cannot assume that what
you know is known by the audience, so you have to use language clearly with the familiar word
to make sure there is no chance of misunderstanding. There are four type in using language
clearly which is use familiar words, choose concrete words rather than abstract words and using
appropriate language. In the speech, the speaker only uses familiar word. Here are some
examples, “The concept of “calories-in, calories-out” alone is just not effective”, “they don’t
get hangry; it’s easier for them to lose weight because they tap into those fat stores; they sleep
better; and they age more slowly” and “There are lots of strategies that I use with my female
patients, but none more powerful than intermittent fasting”. I truly believe that speaker has
choosing the clear language and suitable to speak out the right content and make sure the
audience understands.
Connective are words or phrases that join the thoughts of a speech together and indicate
the relationship between them. Firstly, in this speech, speaker use first transitions which is she
start the speech with the questions that indicate what idea is being left and what idea is coming
up. For example, it shows in the speech by the sentences of “Let’s talk about some statistics as
they pertain to women and healthy aging”. Secondly, an internal preview is also used in her
speech. The speaker also simply previews the sub points which make up the point being
addressed. Then the speaker continues to the solution like “So what are some of the benefits
other than fat loss – fat loss and especially visceral fat around our abdomens, around our major
organs?”. The last connective is internal summaries that speaker use in this speech. For
example, she tells “Now, I want to make sure that I briefly touch on some of the practical
implications for how you would go about starting intermittent fasting”. In my opinion, I believe
when we want to start any speech we must at least have two connectives because it quite
important for the audience.
During the speech, speaker’s voice is loud enough for her audience to hear clearly.
Speaker’s cannot speak in a soft way. It can make her audience difficult to follow her speech.
Loud voice can make her audience gain more concentration and attract with her point and
explanation in her speech. As an example, in minute 0:45, she said “over the next 2 minutes
I’m plan to discuss with you what I believe to be the most performing, transformation of
concept and strategy as a protein that helps any gain”. Next, is pitch. Speaker pitch will rise
when asking a question, it will lower when she wishing to sound severe. Speaker play around
with the volume, pace and pitch of voice the speech. Speaker find different ways of saying the
same sentence. Speaker also explore different ways of adding emphasis to her main points. She
Always try to convey enthusiasm and energy through use of voice. As an example, in minute
0:30, she said “the point what have I tell what is more important when you eat then what you
eat”.
After that, is speed rate of the speech. As we know, from the beginning until the end of
the speech, the speaker’s uses the same speed of conversation which is the speed rate not too
fast. Next, pauses can enhance delivery or be filled needlessly and distract the audience. The
speaker may use pauses to enhance the message delivery or fill the pauses needlessly and
distract the audience from the message. speaker may use a pause to emphasize that the
information coming next is important, or to give the audience time to process what she have
just said. Consider some of the ways that her might use pauses effectively in her delivery. There
are three different types of pauses such as speech disfluencies, filled pauses, and filler words.
Based on this speech, the speaker is using filled pauses. For an example, she said
‘they…struggle more’ in a minute 03.43.
Besides that, vocalic refers to the non-verbal elements of speech used to modify
meaning and convey emotion. Speaker achieve vocal variety by using any of the features of
vocalic such as the rate, pitch, volume, and pause. She uses to change the way her deliver
message. In this video, in the minute 06:15 the speaker’s said “It is free, it’s flexible and it is
simples”, the speakers repeat again the word but faster. Furthermore, pronunciation also
important when the speaker’s deliver their speech. pronunciation focuses on rhythm, and
intonation of the syllables. Pronunciation refers to the ability to use the correct stress, rhythm,
and intonation of a word in a spoken language. As an example, in minute 06.08, the speaker’s
mispronounced the word ‘for myself’.
Based on the video, the speaker said the word ‘passion’ with her own style. Lastly,
speakers may use many different English dialects to change the pitch, rate, volume, and use of
pauses to achieve vocal variety. The speaker uses North American dialect to communicate and
shares the information with the audience.
In this video, the speaker personal appearance is appropriate and suitable for her to perform
a speech. Next is movement, the speaker is trying to be calm, poised and confident during the
presentation. She is not rush in her speech so that the audience can understand clearly of
statement that she stated during her speech. From the video, it is clearly showed that the speaker
is trying to make a motion using hands and arms. She also appeared spontaneous in front of the
audience. Lastly, the eye contact that made by the speaker towards her audience really helps
the audience to pay attention and understand well with what the topic that the speaker is trying
to share. The speakers establish eye contact with the whole audience.
Upon a critical analysis of the speech given by a great speaker, Cynthia Thurlow, not
one but multiple methods or modes of reasoning had been detected. Among the methods of
reasoning used by her comprise of reasoning from principle, reasoning from specific instances,
reasoning causally, and reasoning analogically. First and foremost, reasoning from principle
can be identified during minute 2:49. In minute 2:49, the speaker has come out with a general
principle which is “eating all day long is wrong”. She then followed this statement by a minor
statement such as “eating all day long overtaxed our pancreas”. Finally, she ended her
reasoning with a specific conclusion that eating all day long will result in overload in nutrient
and the body could not absorb all of it, which is unhealthy.
Next, we could identify the use of reasoning from specific instances in minute 3:12.
Here, she connotes a particular fact regarding the importance of how frequent we are eating.
Later on, she managed to supply multiple facts for the audience in so that they would
understand better. These facts include the argument of sugar-burner and fat-burner. Apart from
this, Cynthia had also used reasoning casually. Reasoning causally involves the relationship
between causes and effects. In minute 7:45, we can see that she moves on to explain other
benefit to intermittent fasting apart from fat lost. She had mentioned that “it improves mental
clarity because the insulin level is low”. Upon a closer look to this, we can verify that she
delivers her reasons as such because the insulin level is low, mental clarity improves, which
shows the importance of intermittent fasting
Finally, Cynthia Thurlow had also been found to apply the method of reasoning
analogically. Reasoning analogically connotes that the speaker is categorizing similar situation
and concluding what is true for one, is true for the other. In minute 8:43, the speaker had
categorized multiple conditions which halt a person’s ability to fast such as diabetic, pregnancy
or even being a child. Her reason behind naming the same situation between a diabetic person,
pregnant lady, and a child is because a diabetic person has not an optimal health hence it is true
also for that pregnant lady, and the child since they are in no optimal health. All in all, the
speaker had done a brilliant job in applying the method of reasoning in order that her audience
understood her points better.
A Thorough analysis of Cynthia Thurlow’s speech regarding intermittent fasting had
brought me to a conclusion that she had done an amazing job in appealing to emotion among
her respected audience. In my comprehensive finding, she had applied all three-method i.e.
using emotional language, vivid examples, and delivering with sincerity and conviction.
First of all, Cynthia had used emotional language in her speech. In regards to this, we
can point out in minute 6:05 that she had used the phrase “magic bullet” in her sentence. As
simple as this looks, this phrase succeeds in bringing up the emotional effect desired. In this
case she wants to give a strong feeling of enthusiasm among female audience to start
intermittent fasting in order to gain back their normal self. Next on the list, a case of vivid
example had also been identified in her speech. In minute 2:04 a phrase had been uttered by
her that goes by “I do not support the limiting belief that women have to accept weight gain as
a normal function of aging”. In this context, an extravagant example was given to her female
audience in order to evoke their feeling of compassion that women should not accept the ill
fate. Finally, a strong use of appealing to emotion by method of sincerity and conviction had
been observed on multiple occasion. In minute 0:48, Cynthia had included the phrase “I
believe”. In doing so, she had shown the audience that she holds a firm belief in her topic. Next,
in minute 4:50, Cynthia addressed how it makes her want to cry by looking at the horrible
statistics. By doing so, she managed to captivate the audiences’ emotion by feeling great
sadness towards the topic herself. Last of all, she manages yet again to bring great passion
towards her audience by stating in minute 12:26 that she is very passionate about her topic. By
quickly reassuring the audience that one is passionate about the topic given, it will move the
hearts of the audience and that they will remember it to bring a change. Everything considered,
I would once again like to praise Cynthia on her excellence in captivating her audiences’
emotion. I truly believe that the she had conveyed her points not only factually but also
emotionally.
Based on the analysis of the speech given by a powerful speaker, Cynthia Thurlow which
is the speech about the Intermittent Fasting Transformational Technique. On her speech, she
used a method for let the audience know that she is going to stop soon the speech. The method
she used is dissolve ending, summarize the speech and make a dramatic statement. This method
which is signal the end of the speech and reinforce the central idea. The dissolve ending, she
used on her speech is “Now, I want to make sure that I briefly touch on some of the practical
implications for how you would about start intermittent fasting. Again you want to keep
yourself really well hydrated, you can also have plain coffee or tea. The biggest pain point for
my female patients is weight gain.” In minute 11.16 until minute 12.45, we can see step by step
to a final dramatic statement she used for end the speech.
Next, Cynthia Thurlow had also been found to apply the method of summarize the
speech. Summarize the speech is the restating the main points is the easiest way to end the
speech. During her speech in minute 12.15, she summarizes her speech like a “I want you think
about the fact this is simple, flexible and free option that you can try at home”. This point also
can see at first she starts the speech. Last but not least, she uses a dramatic statement for
reinforce the central idea. On this speech, the speaker made it even effective by pausing a
moment before the last word and using her voice to give the audience the right infection. In
minute 11.57 and 12.27, we can see the dramatic statement which is “The biggest pain point
for my female patients is weight gain” and “I really feel so passionately about this because it
something that all of us should be discussing with our patients. Thank You”. The speaker ends
this speech with the dramatically statement which is left the right affection.
