Location of the Fudger surname in 1881
The unusual Fudger surname can be plotted geographically from the 1881 Census according to Poor Law Union. 1
There is a locus in London (not shown) – but the map shows all the other non-London Fudgers with a main focus in Worcester,
and also in Northampton. This document will later show that some of the Worcester branch migrated to Northampton to follow
the leather and shoe trades.

DEFINITE RELATIONS – Mysteries are given at the end.
James (before 1749-????)
The first couple who appear to be reasonably certainly related are James Fudger and Elizabeth Randle,
possibly of Trotshill in Warndon Parish, north east of the City of Worcester.
Some time before 1767 this James Fuger of Warndon was married to an as yet unknown wife. If he was at
least 18 at this date, he should have been born before 1749.
He was a widower by 1767, when he made an application for a marriage licence to re-marry at Ombersley to
Elizabeth Randle of the nearby parish of Ombersley.2

The parish centre of Warndon is now almost completely swallowed up by the expansion of the City of
Worcester, but the little Church of St. Nicholas survives:

The equally small hamlet of Trotshill is also just hanging on to its separate identity – and is here shown in
the 1880s.

After that, children were probably born as follows:
Anne Fudger, possibly born 1769 at Ripple according to Daphne King.
James Fudger/Fugger 1776 13 March baptised at Warndon St. Nicholas (in the 1851 census he said he had
been born at Trotshill in Warndon Parish)
Thomas Fudger 1779 11 April Baptised at Warndon St Nicholas
John Fudger 1781 11 Nov Baptised at Warndon St Nicholas (in the 1851 census he said he had been born at
Trotshill in Warndon Parish)
Sarah Fudger, possibly married William Corbitt at Fladbury in 1794 according to Daphne King.
Susannah Fudger, possibly married Thomas Corbitt at Fladbury in 1797 according to Daphne King.
Daphne King also suggests that Elizabeth Fudger was buried at Worcester St. Helen’s on 22nd November 1814 aged 67, of
Friar Street.

Mary of Richard and Mary COSNETT, bapt 19 April, Pershore according to Freesearch
The evidence from their children’s baptisms seems to imply that they moved around the City of Worcester quite a bit in the
years after the 1796 marriage. All three of these parishes, however, were on the riverside – in very crowded and poor areas.

In 1838 he is shown resident at the “Pinch”, in St Clement’s parish and eligible to vote as a “H” or Householder. They were
probably living at Bridge Place in the Pinch, which was a small courtyard on the west side of the river, 4 if subsequent sources
are to be believed.
4 Approximately where the old power station was later built, opposite the “Old Rectifying House” Public House.

The “Pinch” had a bad record. In July 1832 the Cholera epidemic broke out there and it was described in the Worcester Journal
of the 19th of July 1832 as being:
This photograph, unattributed from a Facebook page about Worcester, seems to show court 1 running down to Bridge Place on
the far side of the white wall at the end of the court.
In 1840, Bentley’s History Gazetteer & Directory of Worcester lists him as
“Fudger, James, Leather Stainer &c. Pinch Street”
In 1841, our first census record has the family living on the western side of the river – with Isabella’s occupation listed as being
“Publican”. 5

The 1841 City Poll Book also lists him as James Fudger, Householder of the Pinch.
5 This may be the origin of James’s own change to Publican a few years later after Isabella’s death.

27th of January 1847 there is a reference in the Worcestershire Chronicle to “James Fudger, Publican, Hylton Street” and also
to “James Fudger, brewer of Hylton Street.” The Pinch is off Hylton Road.
The Worcester Journal of the 27th of February 1845 published her death notice:
“Feb 17th in the 69th year of her age, Isabella, the wife of Mr. James Fudger, Bridge Place, in the City.”
The Hunt and Co Directory of the City in 1847 then catches him changing his job occupation from Leather Stainer to:
Beer Retailer: James Fudger of Bridge Place.
This may have been because his deceased wife, Isabella, was listed in this profession. Did he take over her business?
1847 November 11th report in the Worcester Journal of the election – at booth number 12 James Fudger of the Pinch, voted for
Osman Ricardo (who won his seat as a Liberal and retained it until 1865) and Hardy. The Conservatives were defeated.
The 1851 Census has the family still at the Pinch in Worcester:

The City Poll Book for 1852 lists him as still being of the Pinch.
14th Sept 1853 the Worcester Chronicle carried a death notice for his eldest daughter Anne Fudger Hunt, the wife of Mr. W.
Hunt, who had died in Bristol.
1854 6th Sept in the Worcestershire Chronicle came a reference to the August 30th Claines marriage, by Rev J. Palmer, of
Thomas Leek to Harriet. The youngest daughter of Mr James Fudger, the Farmers’ Arms, Bridge Place in this city.
On October 13th 1855 a report in the Worcester Journal puts him, aged 74, as a witness to a fight that took place in the Apple
Tree pub in Tybridge Street in Worcester. This fight was over non-payment of sickness pay in a sickness fund, and Fudger
deposed that he had heard the challenge to a fight, and an offer to fight for 5 shillings.! (There is no directed quotation in the
source).
Oddly placed death
Between 1855 and 1860 a James , retired Publican, apparently moved to Droitwich, where he may have died in the latter year-
resident in “the Liberties”. This was a crowded area near the canal. What was his connection there – was there a child resident
there or did he have a licence in Droitwich? Was the witness to his death, Sarah Harrison, a relative? In any case, he may have
been buried at Droitwich St Andrew Church.

The Fudger Family of Trotshill & Worcester.
There is further information about John as he appears in Poll books and electoral rolls – but the issue is clouded by the 1851 residence of
another John Fudger (born 1781) in the Street at the same time, in Done’s buildings. This was “our” John’s Uncle, born in Trotshill! The picture
is further clouded by an Eliza Fudger and family resident at the Upper Quay, whose husband is “absent”
