THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Isaiah 40 v. 31 But they that wait upon the Lord, shall renew their
strength. They shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and
not grow weary, and they shall walk and not faint.
Many years ago, when we still lived in London, I was walking to an
afternoon prayer group meeting, feeling extremely exhausted. I had
done night duty the evening before at the hospital and was really
wondering how I was going to get through the rest of the day. The
verse from Isaiah came to mind and so I started praying that in some
way my strength might be renewed.
Quite suddenly, a lady came out of a newly established Juice Bar,
holding a tray of these pure juice samples: quite tiny, but delicious and
unbelievably refreshing. God certainly answers prayer in many creative
ways and gives us the help from above that we have been seeking.
There is a lovely verse from the book of James that describes this:
James 1 v. 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down
from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting
shadows.
This idea of ‘help from above’ is incorporated into fiction too eg near
the end of the Lord of the Rings, Frodo and Sam are rescued by eagles,
when all seems lost; and then….. they are lifted away to safety by the
powerful flight of the giant birds.
I am sure that many people are longing for renewal at the moment, worn
down by the lockdowns and restrictions of the last year, but as we enter
the month of May with lighter evenings and summer flowers may God
also lighten our hearts and ease anxieties. Thanksgiving and prayer for
others can go a long way towards tilting the balance away from our own
burdens, widening our universe and making way for those “good and
perfect gifts” that God is trying his hardest to give us!

ASCENSION DAY SERVICE – Thursday May 13th
Last year for Ascension Day we held a special service and we plan
something similar this year. The service will include well known hymns
/ songs along with clips and Robin will link together The Lamb of God
(Servant) and The Lion of Judah (King). It is such an encouragement
the “King of Kings” (Jesus) was among us as “one who serves”. Do join
us via Zoom between 7.30pm and 8.30pm – the link is both on the
Church website and our Facebook page.
HOLY HABITS,
Zoom Services and Bible Studies
Our next Bible Studies will mainly focus around our new Zoom theme
which is entitled “Holy Habits” from the Bible Reading Fellowship.
Roughly every two weeks we will include a sermon on the Sunday on
one of the “Habits” (see at the end) and follow it with a Bible Study the
following midweek (sometimes two, identical, options).
We are launching today (April 25th) with “Fellowship” at 10.00am and
following this with identical Bible Studies on either Wednesday April
28th (7.15pm) or Thursday April 29th (8.00pm) and both will last an
hour.
Later this month we will be tackling “Prayer” on both Sunday May 9th
(10.00am) and Tuesday May 11th (7.30pm).
There is an incredible wealth of material available for viewing and
purchase on the Bible Reading Fellowship website for those who would
like to take this excellent series further for themselves
www.brfonline.org.uk/collections/holy-habits
The ten “Holy Habits” are:
Fellowship, Prayer, Gladness and Generosity, Serving, Worship,
Sharing Resources, Making New Disciples, Breaking Bread, Eating
Together and Bible Teaching
SILVER SCREEN LITE
We are currently planning the following sessions for Silver Screen Lite.
Monday April 26th (The Two Ronnies), Monday May 10th (a return to
Dads Army) and Monday May 24th (a return to Fawlty Towers). Each
session runs from 2.30pm to 3.30pm. Because our toilets can only be
used in the event of necessity, we are proposing the whole thing to last
no longer than an hour with the practicality of leaving at the half way
point if needed.
If you have not already indicated through the Help Centre that you
would like to attend, please let Robin know by either phone 623388 or
email [email protected] Numbers are limited by the need to
sit at least 2 metres apart from people who are not in our household or
support bubble.
REVISION OF THE ELECTORAL ROLL
The Church electoral roll is the foundation of the whole structure of
synodical government in the church. It contains the names and addresses
of everyone who can vote at the Annual Parochial Church Meeting. The
electoral roll is revised annually.
The only people who need to fill in an application form are those who
have recently moved into the parish, joined the church, or reached the age
of 16. Announcements will be made in church each Sunday during the 14
days the notice is displayed. If you wish to be on the electoral roll and
meet the criteria which is set out on the application form, please then
complete and sign the form and return it by 2nd May 2021 at the latest to
church.
Application forms will be available from church.
APCM
The Annual Parochial Church Meeting is to be held on Monday 17th
May in Church, commencing at 7.30pm.
Each year we hope to have three new members joining the Council and
to that end if you would like to be considered for election please contact
Robin (Rev R Spittle, (623388 or email [email protected]).
Social distancing restrictions imposed and those wishing to the attend
the Annual meeting should also contact Robin to ensure permitted
numbers are not exceeded.
You may also join on Zoom; the link will be available on the Church
website.
THE LIGHTING PROJECT
It is now over 2 years since the Lighting Project was first launched and
Robin said, in the January 2019 Newsletter, that he hoped All Saints
would be like a spiritual "town built on a hill that cannot be hidden!"
As many of you already know, the Fundraising has been going well and
we now have over £54,430 towards our final goal. This is a tremendous
testament to everyone's generosity - Thank you.
We will continue in the months ahead of course and all methods of
Giving are available. I am offering a "click and collect" service (!) if
you would like to give by cheque and we have also installed a second
Donate Button on the website so that people can specifically support the
Lighting Fund (Blue Button) or the General Work of All Saints (Green
Button).
Letters of Support for the Project are also still welcome: here is just one
example:
To All Saints Kesgrave Wishing you every success in the funding of
light in our Church. What a wonderful vision I see when all the
darkness is dispelled. We have so much to look forward to and I pray
the amount needed will be forthcoming, much love, Regards.
Please email me or phone 07807 984589 if you want more details
On the current timeline we are optimistically hoping for installation
work to start in August, just as Robin goes on Sabbatical, so that he can
return to a shiny new church!
Please keep praying for all this

WEEKLY PRAYER EMAIL
For the last year, since the first restrictions, we have been praying
together each Wednesday for people and topics that are on our hearts.
Initially this replaced our Wednesday morning Prayer service in church
during lock-downs and restrictions, and also supplemented the "prayer
book" in church, however it has now become wider. In praise to God
over this time we have seen so much answered prayer, with around 35
people joining in the weekly prayers.
For each topic raised, we know there is so much prayer from our group,
and we can be sure that God knows what is best for each person or item
he and will listen and answer. The more people that pray together, the
better still, as God has much purpose in us praying together. So if you
have a prayer you would like to submit, or if you would like to receive
the weekly prayers, please don't hold back and instead please contact
us.
2 Corinthians 1:11 "You also must help us by prayer, so that many will
give thanks on our behalf for the blessing granted us through the
prayers of many."
Each week prayer requests and updates are sent in and gathered
together. Examples would be for people who are sick or going through a
difficult time, or for a situation that needs prayer. Please be sure that
you have permission for us to pray for someone, who may also be made
anonymous if preferred, and of course avoid including anything that is
confidential- God knows the details anyway.
On Wednesday morning I send out the combined list of prayers, aiming
to send these by 8:00am.. These also include some weekly prayers and
reflections contributed by Sybil Holbrook or Mary Bendell. For anyone
raised to us for prayer, we continue to pray for that person each week
until the originator asks us to stop, along with any updates from the
originator. In this way we are persistent in prayer and can provide much
prayer support through difficult times.
This is different to the prayer chain, which is for more urgent requests
that can't wait till next Wednesday (please see next item).
If you would like to receive the weekly prayers email, or if you would
like to submit a prayer request for the weekly prayers, please contact
[email protected] or 07857 838678.
"Pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks, for this is the will of
God in Christ Jesus concerning you". 1 Thessalonians 5:17
PRAYER CHAIN
If at any time you have an urgent need for prayer, please consider
contacting the prayer chain. A team of our ministers and faithful people
will provide prayer support quickly, usually the same day or
sooner. Prayers are confidential to the prayer chain although if required
people can be made anonymous.
If preferred, you can discuss your prayer with Sybil or John first, who
can write the prayer for you. Prayer chain requests are not included in
the weekly prayers email unless it is requested- so please ask if you
wish for your prayer to be included in the weekly prayers.
To send in a request to the prayer chain, contact either Sybil Holbrook
or John Wittgreffe as below or email [email protected]
Sybil: [email protected] 07428 001819
John: [email protected] 07857 838678
THE ASK JOURNAL
In mid-February Robin announced that he would March a Marathon
over Lent to raise funds for both The Bishops’ Lent Appeal for Kagera,
Tanzania and the All Saints Lighting Appeal. Unfortunately, Robin’s
plans were hampered initially following his stroke, but determined as
ever, he changed tack slightly and found a willing volunteer in the form
of Carl Lawrence to support him in his mission! Between them the All
Saints’ Marathon was able to continue with Robin safely walking over
the remaining days of Lent, enabling him to gain the exercise
recommended for his recovery. Carl marched his distance at a brisk 4-
5mph.
“It was quite a challenge to walk so quickly” reports Carl. “I did
receive some rather bemused looks from some members of the
community as I sped past, and from Marshall the family dog who
accompanied me and wondered why our walks had suddenly become so
fast!! It was great as I was able to vary the length of the walks each day
to fit in with my routine, and the miles soon clocked up.” Marshall
wasn’t the only dog involved in generating vital funds. Part way
through the challenge Robin received a donation towards the lighting
fund through his door along with a note from ‘Scarlett the dog’ who
also wanted to show her support! Robin concludes “While I have been
frustrated about not completing my Marathon and having to limit my
top speed, I have been greatly blessed by many things. Carl was
amazing and we worked brilliantly together. Well, he mostly walked,
and I logged the distances! Finally, I feel truly blessed by those who
responded generously to both the Kagera Diocesan Project and our
Lighting Project”.
A big thank you to everyone who was involved!
UPDATE ON MRS BIRD
As promised in the previous notices, here is an update on Mrs Bird the
Bluetit! Today when I switched on the screen, I was met with a
wonderful sight - two little white eggs nestled in the soft moss and
feathers! The nest has been built a while now and there hadn’t been any
further developments noticeable but it has been rather cold of late. Other
years if there’s been a cold spell we’ve noticed that they seem to
instinctively know to wait a while before eggs are laid! I wonder how
many little ones there will be this year. In the past we’ve had 7 or 8!

MAY 2021 GIVING: PENTECOST
On the day of Pentecost a very ordinary “unschooled” fisherman called
Peter stood up and addressed huge crowds of people. In the power of the
Holy Spirit he opened the Scriptures to them, quoting from the words of
the Old Testament prophets and expounding the life, death and
resurrection of Christ to them. That very day over 3000 people were
baptized.
We too are “ordinary” and yet through Christ and the power of the same
Holy Spirit our lives can extend far beyond anything “we can ask or
imagine”; your giving is magnified not just by Gift Aid (!) but through
the good uses to which it is put.
All methods of Giving remain available, but the Church website has
been updated with two Donate Buttons: a Green button for General
Giving and a Blue button for supporting the Lighting Project, so please
see the website link for all other details and the updates on the improved
Parish Giving Scheme: You can now set up a Direct Debit for the PGS
without having to contact anyone at the church first.
https://www.askesgrave.org/supportus.htm
Also, most importantly, if you are experiencing financial hardship or
mounting debts please seek help through organisations like
Stepchange https://www.stepchange.org/
or Christians Against Poverty https://capuk.org/
• Occasional Giving

If you can also Gift Aid your donation, please print off a Gift Aid form
from the All Saints Kesgrave website (see Support Us) and give me a
ring on 07807 984589
• Regular Giving (Direct Debit)
For regular giving please contact the Parish Giving Scheme
(PGS) : this is a direct debit scheme with built-in options for Gift Aid
and inflation proofed giving
There are now three options for signing up:
1.) By using the new Online Direct Debit system: log onto the Parish
Giving Scheme website and find our church here:
https://www.parishgiving.org.uk/donors/find-your-parish/kesgrave-all-
saints-ipswich/
2.) By phone: 0333 002 1271
3) By filling in an ASK-specific form and posting it off (please ask me
for this form)
For all 3 ways you will need your own bank details, the special code for

Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace
Streams of mercy never ceasing
Call for songs of loudest praise
Teach me some melodious sonnet
Sung by flaming tongues above
Praise the mount, I'm fixed upon it
Mount of Thy redeeming love
Here I raise my Ebenezer*
Hither by Thy help I've come
And I hope by Thy good pleasure
Safely to arrive at home
Jesus sought me when a stranger
Wandering from the fold of God
He to rescue me from danger
Interposed His precious blood
O, to grace how great a debtor
Daily I’m constrained to be
Let thy goodness like a fetter
Bind my wandering heart to thee
Prone to wander, Lord I feel it
Prone to leave the God I love
Here’s my heart, O take and seal it
Seal it for thy courts above….
Bind my wandering heart to Thee
Robert Robinson (1758 approx)

*An Ebenezer means “ a stone of help” See 1 Samuel 7 v. 12 where
Samuel sets up a stone to commemorate God’s help in defeating the
Philistines.
An Ebenezer is therefore a kind of physical reminder of God’s
faithfulness.
