THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Perspectives

Colossians: 1 v. 15-16 ‘The Message’ translation:

“We look at this Son and see the God who cannot be seen. We look at
this Son and see God’s original purpose in everything created. For
everything, absolutely everything, above and below, visible and
invisible, rank after rank after rank of angels—everything got started in
him and finds its purpose in him.”

On Saturday November 19th, Chris and Mike Bryer and I attended a
Study Day entitled “Seeing Salvation”: this was a reference back to the
immensely popular exhibition at the National Gallery held in the year
2000 and to the way works of art can change our perspective, deepen
our understanding of the Bible and ‘speak’ to us far more directly than
words can.
eg. Salvador Dali’s picture of Christ of St John on the Cross is almost 7’
high and 4’ across (205cms x 116cms) and shows Christ from above,
looking down on the world he had come to save.
Dali said “ I want to paint a Christ that is a painting with more beauty
and joy than has ever been painted before”.

Mike commented that the various pictures we were shown helped to get
him past ‘first impressions’ and look more closely into stories like the
Prodigal Son and Zaccheus.
Paintings by Masters of art like Rembrandt are definitely designed to
draw us further in: Dutch priest Henri Nouwen contemplated the
Prodigal Son alone for hours and eventually wrote A Story of
Homecoming (1992), three centuries after Rembrandt.

In his Letter to the Colossians, Paul sought to convey the universal
perspective, the universal meaning of Christ’s birth, death and
resurrection, long before the invention of the internet and the world-
wide web.
As we sing the familiar Carols this year let us pray for new
understanding, through the three-fold blessing of words, pictures and
music!
O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us we pray, cast out our sin and
enter in, be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great,
glad tidings tell; O come to us, abide with us, Our Lord Immanuel.
Amen

ROBIN’S RETIREMENT AND REMEMBRANCE WEEKEND
EXHIBITION!
11th -13th November 2022

At the last service on 13th November, Robin said he’d chosen this
weekend for his retirement for two reasons: -

Firstly, because it gave people a chance to have a proper chat with him,
over the different weekend events, rather than a rushed chat at the door
if he’d gone for just one main farewell service. This was exactly how it
turned out: visitors were able to come in and enjoy the Exhibition and
then drift over when Robin was free to exchange memories, thanks and
hopes for the future.

Secondly, Robin wanted to choose an occasion that was ‘bigger than
him’, as he put it; so that his retirement took place within the framework
of the sacrifices made during two World Wars and the current war in
Ukraine. This gave an extra poignancy to the weekend, especially when

Natalie, our Parish Admin, came to sing the Ukrainian National Anthem
for us at the 5pm Songs of Praise.
Robin’s 23 year ministry at Kesgrave has been notable for his
generosity and encouragement to others seeking their own vocation: a
succession of would-be curates, lay ministers and youth workers have
all benefited from his open-heartedness:
eg the Rev Sally Letman wrote:

'The amazing thing about Robin is his quiet, gracious encouragement of
others. He sees gifts in people and enables them to flourish in so many
ways of ministry, both lay and Ordained. I hope to be as good and
caring a priest as he is. It was a privilege to work and serve beside him
at All Saints.'

Jean du Boulay, Sarah du Boulay’s mother, said that Sarah wouldn’t
have been where she is today without Robin’s leadership and support, as
she journeyed from youth work to being Priest-in-Charge of the Alde
Sandlings Benefice this year.

Robin’s involvement with all aspects of the Kesgrave community,
including local schools, the Town Council, outreach services in the
Farmhouse pub and so on, have also been well documented; his love of
the absurd (the Simpsons), “racing” sheep with daft names, quizzes and
bad jokes etc, endeared him to many younger members of the
congregation. In the spirit of remembrance, how can we forget that
Percy Veerance was lucky enough to attend the same school as Robin!

The final two events of the Sunday were a well-attended Silver Cafe and
a Songs of Praise with the brass band.
Before we left for the lighting of the Beacon, Rev Gary Jones thanked
Robin for all his years of service and we were able to present Robin
with a cheque, a large card signed by dozens of people, chocolates for
Jenny and a book with further thoughts and good wishes.

At the Beacon there was a further surprise when a memorial recognising
his 23 years of service was unveiled: an outline of a WW Soldier

known as the “Unknown Tommy”, made by RBLI: Britains’ Bravest
Manufacturing Company since 1919.
On behalf of the whole Ministry Team and the community of Kesgrave,
we wish Robin and Jenny a very happy retirement, with time to enjoy
their extended family, their new home in Colchester and interests like
Elite Racing.

THANK YOU CARD FROM ROBIN AND JENNY

To All at All Saints Kesgrave

Many, many heartfelt thanks for all your wishes, friendship, fellowship
and thoughtful / generous cards and gifts.
Words are completely inadequate to express our thinking after 23.5
years as part of the All Saints Church Kesgrave family. Neither can a
card put into place the deep affection and gratitude we leave with.

Every Blessing
Robin & Jenny

IMPORTANT MESSAGE
We are hoping to have a new rector next year to replace Robin.
Your PCC is putting together information for people to know what we
expect from our new person.
What sort of person would you like to see?
What do you think is important for them to do here in Kesgrave, Little
Bealings and Playford?
What should we say are the priorities for the future?
Please put your suggestions in the bucket in church, email Gary or Chris
or tell any member of the ministry team.
We would be glad of your help
Robin was a very popular vicar so we need someone special to replace
him.

Thank you.

CHRISTMAS SERVICES AT ALL SAINTS KESGRAVE

We’re coming to the end of another year and this is the season of Ad-
vent when Christians prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

Christmas may be rather different this year what with food prices rising,
mortgage costs increasing, electricity, gas and oil costing much more
and bird flu casting doubt on the availability of chickens and turkeys;
there may be no possibility of expensive Christmas presents. The news
is full of potential disasters about to engulf us. It often seems as if they
are determined to cause us anxiety.

Despite bad news, a Christian Christmas will always be a time of joyful
celebration as it is about so much more than food or presents. It is the
time to celebrate the birth of our Saviour, God’s son sent to show us
how to live and then to pay the price of human sin through his death on
a cross.

Jesus spent his time healing the sick and tormented and astounding oth-
ers with his power and authority. He taught through example what it
means to love God and your neighbours then, through his death and res-
urrection gave hope for the future.

This Christmas can we put aside concerns for our own comfort by en-
joying what we have while looking out for anyone in need? There are
always charities seeking support and individuals needing help or com-
panionship.

If you would like to join in some Christmas cheer please join us at All
Saints. Our vicar, Robin has retired but special Christmas services will
take place as usual. We look forward to welcoming you.

TRADITIONAL CAROL SERVICE,
December 18th, 6:30pm.

This year we would like to have a choir to lead the singing at this
service. There will be traditional carols and hymns plus two anthems
sung by the choir. Rehearsals will be held on Friday evenings from
7:30-8:30pm in the church on 2nd, 9th and 16th December. Sets of
music will be available on Sunday 27th November or on the evening of
the first rehearsal. If you would like to join us, please contact Alice on

SILVER GROUPS
Now that the Autumn season is well under way and the nights are drawing
in, we are now seeing the Silver Group of activities taking off, these in-
clude Silver Screen, Silver Games and Silver Cafe. With the Silver Screen
being very well supported by the church members and the community of
Kesgrave. The latest Silver Screen was a heart-warming film based on a
true story of an American footballer, the film was called ‘The Blind Side’,
we had nearly 30 people attend but there is always room for more.

We are also pleased to see that the Silver Games is being well attended,
and there is always a warm welcome to any newcomers, at Silver Games
we play a variety of games including; Rummikub, Scrabble, Up words (a
version of Scrabble), Mexican Train and a fun card game Uno. Even if
you don’t play board games you will be welcome to just come along and
sit with our regulars and have a chat. At all of our Silver events there is
always a good variety of food to be had and enjoyed with tea, coffee or
chocolate and sometimes squash.

Our latest Silver Café was held on the same day as our vicar Robin retired
and we had enough food donated to possibly feed the five thousand!!
There were sausage rolls, buns, cake, cheese, and biscuits, together with
crackers both cheesy and plain. What a feast, everyone enjoyed the food
and the atmosphere, together with the brass band playing for the songs of
praise, which followed the Silver Café.

We welcome anybody who wishes to come to the Silver events and the
website should have all the dates on it for you to mark in your diary, we
start at 2pm and usually finish at 4pm on Monday afternoons with the
Games and Screen on alternate weeks, the Screen is in the hall and the
Games are in the church. When you turn up you can be assured of a warm
welcome. Our next Silver Café which will be held in the church, on the
11th December. It will of course be Christmas themed, in which we look
forward to welcoming you all.

Next sessions of Silver Screen are Mondays 5th of December and 16th
January at the Church Hall, 2pm-4pm.

It has been a pleasure to see so many people get so much out of those
sessions so far.
Following the screening, we have a short talk.
Come along for an enjoyable afternoon and companionship.
Next sessions of Silver Games are Monday 12th December, 9th Janu-
ary and 23rd January at the Church, 2pm-4pm.
Come and enjoy playing the old fashioned and some modern games
such as Up-Words, Scrabble, Mexican Train, Rummikub and Scrabble
and other traditional games. Many have also enjoyed the opportunity to
just sit with friends and relax and chat to each other.
Sunday 11th December - Festive Silver Café at 4pm

CHRISTMAS GIFTS FOR CHILDREN IN UKRAINE
At All Saints church we have been collecting toys and gifts for the
Ukrainian children for Christmas, as part of the Ardent Hire Solutions
drive to help the Ukrainian people. In fact, by the time this is being

read the gifts will have been wrapped and loaded on the lorry ready for
shipping to the Ukraine. Once there, it will be met and unloaded by the
local branch of the Rotary Club and they will start the distribution of the
gifts to the local children from tots to teens. This notice is just a way of
saying thank you so much for your generosity, Kesgrave, you have done
it again, as I can remember the dozens of one meter square blankets that
were so kindly donated for the babies in Africa and the shoeboxes for
the Samaritan Christmas appeal. Once again when called upon the kind
hearts of Kesgrave have reached out to those in need, you may have
heard on Radio Suffolk on the 15 November that there was a ‘wrap-a-
thon’ to be held at Claydon school on the 26th and 27th November, this
was to wrap 7,000 of the potential 20,000 gifts for the lorry and volun-
teers were being called for, in order to go to the school and help for a
couple of hours, with the bribe of sausage rolls and hot drink. If you
were one of them, then thank you from the bottom of our hearts on be-
half of all the Ukrainian children who without the generosity of people
both in time and gifts would not have a happy Christmas. As you can
see from the photo there are a few teddies going aboard as well, hope
they have got their passports!!

WEDNESDAY MORNING

At All Saints church on Wednesday morning from 9.30am until
10.30am there is either a Bible Study, in which we are currently looking
at the book of Ruth, we are using a DVD from the Christian conference
at Keswick with Alistair Begg, or you can come for an hour of quiet to
just be still, to pray and to experience the presence of God. Both of
these are ably led by Mike Bryer a Reader at All Saints church, do feel
free to come along and join Mike at either the bible study or for the hour
of peace and reflection. These are followed by refreshments of tea, cof-
fee and biscuits.

REMEMBRANCE DAY SERVICE
In Ipswich
On 13th November our administrator, Natalie Lawrence, was invited to
speak at Suffolk's major Remembrance Day service at the war memorial
in Christchurch Park.
Natalie was concerned about speaking in front of thousands of people
but bravely accepted the invitation.
The next day there was a photo of her in the East Anglian daily times
together with a report stating that she gave a 'powerful address' which
proved to be 'the most moving part of the ceremony'.
Natalie spoke of the devastating impact of war on her homeland. Thank-
fully her own family have not suffered bombing or missile strikes but
her sister, a university teacher, has sometimes had to give lessons in an
underground bunker and her parents have been plagued by drones over-
head and power cuts.
She also spoke of the work going on at the Ukrainian hub here in Kes-
grave.
Congratulations to her for a great morning's work.
Thanks also go to all those assisting Natalie to help our Ukrainian refu-
gees cope with life in Kesgrave and arranging lots of useful items such
as warm clothes, medication and generators to be loaded onto trucks
bound for Ukraine.

DECEMBER 2022 AND JANUARY 2023 GIVING

We are obviously aware, as a Church, that millions of people are going
to be struggling to survive over the coming months, as nearly every as-
pect of daily life sees sharp price rises.
If you are experiencing financial hardship or mounting debts please seek
help through organisations like Stepchange https://www.step-
change.org/ or Christians Against Poverty https://capuk.org/

We value all the contributions that are made towards keeping our
church and the other churches in our benefice going; the financial sup-
port we receive goes into maintaining a great variety of work including
pastoral visiting, visits to care homes, all the ‘Silver’ activities (Silver
Film, Silver Games and Silver Crafts), church services across all 3
churches, Bible Studies and Children’s work like Little Explorers.

All methods of giving remain available:

1) BACS payments: Our bank is the Co-op Bank and the name on the

account is Kesgrave Parochial Church Council Sort Code: 08-92-

99 Account No 65453375

2) Gift Aid: Increase your donation by 25% at no extra cost to your-

self!

If you are eligible for Gift Aid please pick up a form from the church or

print one off and send or give it to me. (You must pay the equivalent

amount in UK Tax for anything that you gift)

GIFT AID ASK PCC gift aid declaration
3) Parish Giving Scheme: We welcome donations in any form but a
monthly direct debit is amongst the most helpful because it brings sta-
bility to the finances and helps us to plan ahead.

It incorporates two voluntary "opt-ins": ticking the box for Gift Aid
and/or ticking the box for something called Inflationary Giving, which
simply means a small voluntary increase once a year. You receive an-
nual notice of this and can always decline the increase
The Scheme is run centrally in Gloucester, but you have control over
your own account and can also increase or decrease the commitment.
The details you need are as follows:
Parish: Kesgrave All Saints
Diocese: St Eds and Ips Diocese
Parish Reference: 330633093 (this ensures your donation goes to the
right parish!)
https://www.parishgiving.org.uk/donors/how-it-works/
You can join in 3 main ways:

• By phoning 0333 002 1271 Monday-Friday 9am - 5pm (Tele-
phone service for setting up a direct debit)

• By logging onto the website and setting up your own direct debit
• By paper form available from me: Sally Wainman 07807 984589

ter, GL1 3BD

DO YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW NEED PRAYER?
If at any time you or someone you know are in need of prayer, we have
an active prayer ministry who would love to pray for you. We believe
that God answers all of our prayers, as he loves us dearly and knows
just what we need. We have seen God work in so many different ways
through the prayer ministry. Please do not hesitate to contact if you feel
this can help.
If your prayer request is urgent, contact our prayer chain by

calling John Wittgreffe on 07857 838678 or email ask.prayer-
[email protected] specifying "Prayer Chain".

If you have an ongoing request for prayer, each Wednesday a
prayer request email goes out to ministers and faithful people who
will include your request in their prayers on Wednesday, or as soon as
possible thereafter. If you would like your prayer included, please use
the same contact as above stating "For Wednesday prayers", or both
Wednesday Prayers and Prayer Chain if appropriate.

All information is considered private to those who take part in the pray-
ers. If, however, you feel something is very sensitive, please mention
this and we will make the prayers anonymous before they go out- God
still knows who you mean!
If you would like private prayer with a minister, you can request this
and we will work something out for you. If for any reason John is una-
vailable, please contact one of our ministry team as in our contacts list.

"Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circum-
stances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." 1 Thessa-
lonians 5:16-18
