Newsletter Issue No 105 - 22.10.23 November 2023

ALL SAINTS KESGRAVE NEWSLETTER ISSUE NO 105 – 22.10.23 November 2023 THOUGHT FOR THE DAY Autumn is almost on us; in fact, by the time that this goes to print we will be nearly at the end of Autumn and looking ahead to Winter. However, back to Autumn, the leaves are coming down, the trees are starting to show their beautiful colours and the weather is changing. The other day

when I was out walking, I noticed that there were a lot of leaves and I have to confess I didn’t resist the temptation, so as I walked along I scuffed up some leaves, just as I used to do when I was a child walking home from school. Autumn is one of my favourite seasons its cooler for one thing and the hay fever is not as bad as it is in summer. John Keats put it quite well when he said in his poem ‘To Autumn’ it’s the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’. It’s the time of year when fruit is harvested and preserved either in jams, or in the freezer nowadays. But I was struck by the phrase ‘mellow fruitfulness’, mellow means if it’s a sound it would be pleasant and smooth. Fruitfulness well a five-year-olds idea of fruitful is using a box of crayons every week, and an apple orchard would be one that’s full of fruit, quite literally the more fruit the more fruitful, whether it’s an apple tree or a person. So, Keats had it about right with his description of Autumn. We are also told to be fruitful, in the Bible we are told to go out and make disciples of all nations. How are we to do that? By talking about Jesus, witnessing if you want to call it that, although I once heard it called ‘gossiping the gospel’, but we should tell everyone just how good God is to us and what He has done for us. We can even get really brave and invite a friend or neighbour to church with us, even offer a lift if they need it, but not just for Sundays, why not on other days of the week also? We shouldn’t just gossip the gospel, we should walk the walk and talk the talk, live God's good life so people will see and be curious about what we have. I too have hopes of being fruitful as I have embarked on Reader Training for the next two years, so if you see me with a slightly glazed look you will now know why; it has probably been a few too many hours in front of the laptop typing out an essay. Christine Bryer, Reader in Training

REMEMBRANCE SERVICES On the 12th of November 2023, we come together on Remembrance Sunday, a cherished national occasion, to honour the unwavering service and profound sacrifice of those who have steadfastly defended our freedoms, preserving the very essence of our way of life. Our day at ASK begins with a gentle 8:30am Holy Communion, setting a reverent tone for the morning. At 10am, we gather for a Remembrance Service commencing at the church and later we walk to unite with uniformed organisations in solemnity, culminating in a poignant 11:00 am 2 minute of silence at the Legion Green, Ropes Drive. As the day draws to a close, at 6pm, Sunday the 12th of November 2023, a simple yet deeply significant Ceremony of Remembrance will take place at the War Memorial, Ropes Drive. This moving tribute will be followed by the symbolic lighting of the Beacon. In Little Bealings, the Remembrance Service will commence at 10am, providing a meaningful moment of reflection. ALL SAINTS CHURCH KESGRAVE HARVEST FESTIVAL OF TALENTS 7TH & 8TH OCTOBER 2023 This year our Harvest celebrations took place over 2 days and literally dozens of people contributed their time and talents to bring the various events to fruition: there was: • a whole range of beautiful harvest displays of flowers, fruit and vegetables in porch, chapel and church. This included one from our Date Time Service Where / Who to contact Thu 30th Nov 11.00am12.00pm Thursday Holy Communion at ASK All Saints Church Kesgrave Thu 26th Oct 7.15pm9.00pm ALPHA Course “Stay Curious” All Saints Little Bealings For more information contact [email protected] 07825 004585

sister church, Little Bealings, and produce from this display has been taken across to Playford for their Harvest Service (it's not just the fairy godmother in Cinderella who can "recycle" a pumpkin.) • a stunning "Harvest Farm" from Cedarwood School by Year 6 complete with pond, tractor, outbuildings and backdrop • good quality refreshments from Martins' Bakery in Woodbridge Road plus generous donations from the congregation • straw bales to set the tone in the driveway leading up to the porch, and a full-size home-made scarecrow in the Children's Corner, along with the "Guess the name" prize • a board of childrens' drawings and a board illustrating church "talents": architecture, O/S maps, weddings, nativity plays, plumbing, ministry, flowers, music etc etc • pansy plants for sale from Tomline Road, along with bric-a-brac and bookstalls • specialist Childrens Activities in the form of Moravian Bread Dough modelling, courtesy of Marie Grueberova • the ever-popular Teddy Zip Wire from the tower (medical checks included!) • musical support from Rob Lewis Music in Dobbs Lane • the presence of the Ukraine hub • excellent Tech back-up for both rehearsals and concert • the Talent Concert where we had participants from a whole variety of different countries and beautiful singing in Polish, Czech, Ukrainian ; acapella singing, poems, Flanders & Swann, Gilbert and Sullivan, guitar and piano pieces, jokes and more! At one point Natalie led a heartfelt prayer for her home country where recent bombings had decimated the population of a small village.

A special thank you to the audience too who were so supportive and kind in their encouragement and applause! • Three services on Sunday 8th with Harvest Cafe and Songs of Praise with the Brass Band: thank you to Toby Tate who was our Guest Preacher The general theme of the weekend was Talent & Community and I think you can see from the above that this was achieved. Financial support was gratefully received from the Diocesan Growth Fund and from our own Parish Trust Harvest Produce was taken to Martlesham OneStop Shop and the money raised over the weekend will go towards our Parish Share. The Parish Share helps to cover the cost of Ministry across the Diocese, including the cost of incumbents, so we certainly have a vested interest in this (!), as we look forward to welcoming Rev Sarah Quantrill and husband Mike on November 20th Finally: THANK YOU to everyone who made this weekend possible: many hours of preparation went into this time of fellowship, refreshment, creativity and worship Thank you Sally Wainman

Parish name All Saints Church, Kesgrave Parish code 330633093 Diocese St Eds and Ips Diocese We also have a “Donate” QR Code: To donate online, scan the QR code with your phone below: Or go to askesgrave.org/supportus for more ways to give. FINANCE AND PARISH SHARE 2023 We have three main financial responsibilities as a church: 1) To keep the church going in all its myriad ways! • Have a look at the website What's On page to see all that we offer in the way of services, events; • Add in the less visible part of our work: pastoral visiting, home communions, services in care homes • Add in baptisms, weddings, funerals

• Add in the huge amount of voluntary effort that sustains all this 2) To keep the church in good repair (Fabric) • The permanent parts of the church: wood, stone, bricks etc are termed the Fabric of the church; continual maintenance is necessary to provide a safe, welcoming building that meets the modern standards of health and safety; at the time of writing (16/10/2023) we need some roof repairs and some drainage maintenance to combat root ingress. 3) Parish Share paid to the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich each year • The Parish Share is our share of the total Diocesan costs spread across 400 + parishes; it covers the cost of stipendiary Vicars, the cost of ongoing ministerial training and study days, the cost of most of the legal advice and back-up we receive, and the work of the DAC (Diocesan Advisory Committee) which advises on fabric, Faculties, churchyards etc • This year it is £52,584 which as you can see is a huge challenge; at the time of writing this (20th September 2023) the predicted shortfall is about £11,000 by December 31st 2023. This means we anticipate being able to pay £41,584 by the end of the year, but still need about £11,000 more ie we need 110 people to give an extra £100 each! • If you would like to contribute specifically to the Share please let Emma Burrows or myself know so that your donation is ringfenced for that purpose THANK YOU to each and everyone who make all three parts possible: you are part of centuries of generosity! For any queries, please contact me Sally Wainman 07807 984589 DO YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW NEED PRAYER? If at any time you or someone you know are in need of prayer, we have an active prayer ministry who would love to pray for you. We believe

that God answers all of our prayers, as he loves us dearly and knows just what we need. We have seen God work in so many different ways through the prayer ministry. Please do not hesitate to contact if you feel this can help. If your prayer request is urgent, contact our prayer chain by calling John Wittgreffe on 07857 838678 or email [email protected] specifying "Prayer Chain". If you have an ongoing request for prayer, each Wednesday a prayer request email goes out to ministers and faithful people who will include your request in their prayers on Wednesday, or as soon as possible thereafter. If you would like your prayer included, please use the same contact as above stating "For Wednesday prayers", or both Wednesday Prayers and Prayer Chain if appropriate. All information is considered private to those who take part in the prayers. If, however, you feel something is very sensitive, please mention this and we will make the prayers anonymous before they go out- God still knows who you mean! If you would like a private prayer with a minister, you can request this and we will work something out for you. If for any reason John is unavailable, please contact one of our ministry team as in our contacts list. "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 John Wittgreffe, Elder UKRAINE AID CONTINUES Since our last update, we were made aware that the Kyiv Military Hospital changed its request for a generator, to a more immediate priority, kidney dialysis machines. Wonderfully, God has provided so quickly, even for this, with the exact model located and the full monies raised.

It's heartening to report that the hospital was able to acquire four of these critical machines. Behind the scenes, tireless efforts are underway, involving fundraising endeavours and the meticulous sourcing and collection of vital supplies. On Tuesday, 17th October, Mediquip Ipswich provided David with a fourth large load of valuable medical aids that he was able again to take to the Ukrainian warehouse in London for onward delivery to hospitals and centres in Ukraine who forward photos of delivery and use. Thanks again to John Grose Ipswich for yet another free loan of a Luton for this purpose! It's a poignant truth that the need is staggering, and the support we're able to provide is so needed. We were all moved by David's performance at our Harvest Festival of Talents on October 7th, where he unveiled a heartfelt song he composed based on the people he encountered during his journeys to Ukraine. The words, music, emotions, and sentiments that David wove into his song struck a chord in our hearts. We're immensely grateful to David for carving out time in his busy schedule to share his gift with us. Seeing him at All Saints was a true delight!! As David mentioned, the need persists. In line with his recent article, our next funding priority is to secure a vehicle that will enable him to embark on his upcoming planned journey. If any local group would appreciate the opportunity to hear details of this work, with a view to assisting in some way, please contact David to discuss. Together, we can make a tangible difference in the lives of those in need. David Jacobs 07500531901
