ALL SAINTS KESGRAVE
NEWSLETTER

ISSUE NO 95 – 30.10.22
November 2022

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Dear friends,
There are big changes afoot this month as our vicar, Robin is retiring af-
ter 23 years at All Saints.
During those years Robin has engaged enthusiastically with the people
of Kesgrave through encouraging worship in church and introducing the
love of God to those with no church background through innovative

services in the Farmhouse pub and our church hall as well as pet ser-
vices in the open air.

Robin has been involved in the life of our Kesgrave community as a
member of the town council for many years and a school governor. He
instigated after-school church for children and their carers at Cedar-
wood, Heath and Gorseland primary schools plus fun evening groups
for 7-11s and teenagers. He welcomed the Scout and Guide movements
at church and was actively involved with projects at the High school.

Christmas worship has been especially exciting during Robin’s time
with us. We have often needed three services to accommodate all who
wanted to join a Christingle or Christmas Eve crib service.

Robin has helped train at least seven curates and three lay readers in his
time so his influence will continue within the diocese.

He is known to many in the parish and beyond through the numerous
baptisms, weddings and funerals he has taken over the years. Robin will
be greatly missed and many are sad to see him go, but he has given an
amazing service to us over the years and thoroughly deserves his rest.

I know we would all like to thank him for his ministry and pray that
God will grant him and Jenny a long and happy retirement.

If you would like to say ‘Goodbye’ he will be in church with an exhibi-
tion of ‘Kesgrave in the second World War’ Friday Nov 11th from 7-
9pm, Saturday 12th 10-4 and Sunday13th 2-4.

Our church website www.askesgrave has any information you may
need.

We look forward to having another vicar next year; meanwhile we will
continue to keep All Saints as the vibrant, welcoming place it has be-
come during Robin’s leadership, ably supported by our ministry team.
We hope you will continue to support us during this time.

WORD FROM THE STUDY
Remember, remember the fifth of November. For me, I can hardly forget
it, as it was my mum’s birthday, and as the saying goes, you only forget
once!

November, in the life of the Church becomes the season of Remem-
brance. We begin the month with All Saints Day, followed by All Souls
Day, Remembrance Sunday, St Andrew’s Day and then, of course, Christ
the King. Each one of these festivals is important. The Remembrance
Day is when we remember those who fell in war defending our freedom.
There will be services in all our churches to mark those who gave their
life in the service of others.

This year’s commemorations as well as remembering past conflicts, we
will be conscious of the ongoing situation in the Ukraine and those who
suffer ongoing effects of war. As a community and as a nation, we can all
play our part by just pausing for a moment either on the Sunday or Re-
membrance Day itself, to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
Jesus said “Greater love hath no man, than to lay down his life for his
friends”.

As the autumn leaves begin to fall and the seasons change, and yes, the
clocks go back, it reminds us that as in life, situations change, but our
focus on our daily lives should remain the same. The hymn; Through all
the changing scenes of life, in trouble and in joy; sums it up perfectly,

though we are facing things that are out of our control, God ultimately
remains in charge.

When we pause for a moment, in spite of the many difficulties we face at
the moment, the blessings we receive at God’s hand, far outnumber the
negative ones in our lives.

If I look back on my ministry over the last year, I can look at it through
two lenses. One of Robins sayings is one will see stars, the other will see
mud. You could say that the mud has been the energy crisis in increase
of foodbanks and so on that have been placed on us, or do I look through
the stars and see what a real privilege and a blessing it is to be the local
minister of three beautiful churches, and ultimately, serving the people in
these communities. Yes, definitely the second one!

Through our services on a Sunday, it offers us the opportunity to take
some time-out of our busy lives, to come spend some time in quiet or to
join in the worship. Everybody is most welcome to our services every
Sunday at Kesgrave and either at St Marys Playford, or All saints Little
Bealings, all services start at 10am.

As we go forward if you would like a visit from a priest either Chris or
myself will be pleased to see you, and it doesn’t have to be a Church
matter. Tea, one sugar please!

God bless you all.

Reverend Gary Jones

NOVEMBER GIVING 2022
"Give plenty of what is given to you
Listen to Pity's call
Don't think the little you give is great
And the much you get is small"
Phoebe Cary - American Poet (Sept 4th 1824 - July 31st 1871)

Generosity is one of the kindest words in the English Language because
it recognizes both kinship with others and the Author of all giving.
Amongst the many voices raised for the needs of others we want our
church to continue to serve the community, so this month I'm focusing
on:
Parish Giving Scheme:
We welcome donations in any form but a monthly direct debit is
amongst the most helpful because it brings stability to the finances and
helps us to plan ahead.
It incorporates two voluntary "opt-ins": ticking the box for Gift
Aid and/or ticking the box for something called Inflationary Giving,
which simply means a small voluntary increase once a year. You re-
ceive annual notice of this and can always decline the increase.
The Scheme is run centrally in Gloucester, but you have control over
your own account and can also increase or decrease the commitment.
The details you need are as follows:
Parish: Kesgrave All Saints
Diocese: St Eds and Ips Diocese
Parish Reference: 330633093 (this ensures your donation goes to
the right parish!)
https://www.parishgiving.org.uk/donors/how-it-works/
You can join in 3 main ways:

• By logging onto the website and setting up your own direct debit

• By phoning 0333 002 1271 Monday-Friday 9am - 5pm (Tele-
phone service for setting up a direct debit)

• By paper form available from me: Sally Wainman 07807 984589

DO YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW NEED PRAYER?
If at any time you or someone you know are in need of prayer, we have
an active prayer ministry who would love to pray for you. We believe
that God answers all of our prayers, as he loves us dearly and knows
just what we need. We have seen God work in so many different ways
through the prayer ministry. Please do not hesitate to contact if you feel
this can help.
If your prayer request is urgent, contact our prayer chain by call-
ing John Wittgreffe on 07857 838678 or email ask.prayer-
[email protected] specifying "Prayer Chain".
If you have an ongoing request for prayer, each Wednesday a
prayer request email goes out to ministers and faithful people who
will include your request in their prayers on Wednesday, or as soon as
possible thereafter. If you would like your prayer included, please use

the same contact as above stating "For Wednesday prayers", or both
Wednesday Prayers and Prayer Chain if appropriate.

All information is considered private to those who take part in the pray-
ers. If, however, you feel something is very sensitive, please mention
this and we will make the prayers anonymous before they go out- God
still knows who you mean!

If you would like private prayer with a minister, you can request this
and we will work something out for you. If for any reason John is una-
vailable, please contact one of our ministry team as in our contacts list.

"Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circum-
stances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." 1 Thessa-
lonians 5:16-18

not pop along and meet some new people? Don’t’ knit – just pop along
for a natter. Tea/coffee and biscuits are provided. Donations towards the
cost would be welcomed.

available to buy. This will also include a range from The Somersham
