ALL SAINTS KESGRAVE NEWSLETTER ISSUE NO 107 – 28.01.24 February 2024 THOUGHT FOR THE DAY Romans 8 v. 26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

As the seasons of the Church turn, we have the chance to consider different aspects of the life of Christ, underpinned by the Old Testament scriptures: Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Palm Sunday heralding Holy Week, Easter, Pentecost and then the broad waters of the Trinity taking us back to Advent again; but of all the seasons Lent is perhaps the most personal because we are particularly asked to reflect on our own experience of Jesus, of prayer, of how our lives are going and we can see from Romans 8 that we may hardly have an answer at all! Instead the Holy Spirit wonderfully intercedes, (speaks up) for us, looking at our underlying longings for greater understanding. Lent begins this year on February 14th with a chance to join in one of the Ash Wednesday services either at Little Bealings (10.00am) or Kesgrave (7.30pm). The quiet reflective service is similar in tone to that of Compline (Night Prayer) where the Minister says: “May the Almighty and merciful Lord, grant unto you pardon and remission of all our sins, time for amendment of life, and the grace and comfort of the Holy Spirit.” Amen. Traditionally the ‘ashes’ were made from the Palm Crosses used on Palm Sunday the previous year, faithfully saved because they were holy and then ritually burned in the church on Shrove Tuesday, ready for the following day. I felt this was an amazing example of how one season supports and flows into another. So, as Lent approaches, may we make the most of this opportunity of amendment, celebrated world-wide. THANK YOU FROM CHRIS AND GARY Dear friends, we would like to thank you for the very kind gift we were given for leading our churches through the vacancy. We were overwhelmed by your generosity. Like you we share a deep love for our benefice and were happy to serve. We could not have done this without the help of our readers, the rest of the ministry team and the PCC so we would like to thank you all for the immense support and encouragement we were given throughout. Neither of us has yet decided how to enjoy the gift but it will probably be used for a short break when we have the time and weather for some relaxation. Thank you for being part of our amazing church family here in Kesgrave with Little Bealings and Playford. Love and Blessings from Chris and Gary JENNIE’S FAREWELL As we approach February, we're getting ready to bid farewell to our Children and Family Worker, a wonderful colleague and friend, Jennie. After 7 years with us, Jennie’s last F.I.G Family Service will be on Sunday 4 th February, and we can't help but feel a mix of emotions as we think about the impact she's had on all of us. Jennie's warm, kind, and caring nature has made her not just an exceptional colleague but also a cherished friend to many. Her ability to connect with everyone, especially the children, has left a significant mark on our hearts. At F.I.G ( Faith In God) Family Service, Jennie's love for God shone through. Her creative and interactive way of telling Bible stories and sharing messages with the children, listening, and asking questions made every service special. From carefully chosen videos and songs to engaging discussions, she made it fun and made each child feel important and loved by God. At the end of the service, she continued a tradition of a soft football game, started by Robin and loved by all the boys and girls. At Little Explorers, watching children grow and change under Jennie’s guidance, both in play and in the Bible stories she shared, has been a joy for us all. Her ability to connect with toddlers, seeing them climb onto her lap during story time, speaks volumes about the comfort and warmth she provided. Jennie has kept in touch with families, welcomed younger siblings, and created a ripple effect of fond memories. Even after children leave the group and join nursery or school, they remember songs like "Our God is a Great Big God," "The Blessing" song, and the Bubble prayers.

Jennie, you will be sorely missed by your church family, and we wish you nothing but success, joy, and fulfillment in all your future endeavours. MEN’S & LADIES’ BREAKFAST Please come along on Saturday, 17th February at 9.30am and join us at the Farmhouse Pub for our Men’s & Ladies’ Breakfast and fellowship. All ages are welcome. FINANCE AND PARISH SHARE 2024 We have three main financial responsibilities as a church: 1) To keep the church going in all its myriad ways! • Have a look at the website What's On page to see all that we offer in the way of services, events; • Add in the less visible part of our work: pastoral visiting, home communions, services in care homes • Add in baptisms, weddings, funerals • Add in the huge amount of voluntary effort that sustains all this 2) To keep the church in good repair (Fabric) The permanent parts of the church: wood, stone, bricks etc are termed the Fabric of the church; continual maintenance is necessary to provide a safe, welcoming building that meets the modern standards of health and safety

3) Parish Share paid to the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich each year The Parish Share is our share of the total Diocesan costs spread across 400 + parishes; it covers the cost of stipendiary Vicars, the cost of ongoing ministerial training and study days, the cost of most of the legal advice and back-up we receive, and the work of the DAC (Diocesan Advisory Committee) which advises on fabric, Faculties, churchyards etc If you would like to contribute specifically to the Share please let Emma Burrows or myself know so that your donation is ringfenced for that purpose THANK YOU to each and everyone who make all three parts possible: you are part of centuries of generosity! For any queries, please contact me Sally Wainman 07807 984589 DO YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW NEED PRAYER? If at any time you or someone you know are in need of prayer, we have an active prayer ministry who would love to pray for you. We believe that God answers all of our prayers, as he loves us dearly and knows just what we need. We have seen God work in so many different ways through the prayer ministry. Please do not hesitate to contact if you feel this can help. If your prayer request is urgent, contact our prayer chain by calling John Wittgreffe on 07857 838678 or email [email protected] specifying "Prayer Chain". If you have an ongoing request for prayer, each Wednesday a prayer request email goes out to ministers and faithful people who will include your request in their prayers on Wednesday, or as soon as possible thereafter. If you would like your prayer included, please use the same contact as above stating "For Wednesday prayers", or both Wednesday Prayers and Prayer Chain if appropriate.

All information is considered private to those who take part in the prayers. If, however, you feel something is very sensitive, please mention this and we will make the prayers anonymous before they go out- God still knows who you mean! If you would like a private prayer with a minister, you can request this and we will work something out for you. If for any reason John is unavailable, please contact one of our ministry team as in our contacts list. "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 John Wittgreffe, Elder UKRAINE AID UPDATE I returned from my 11th trip to Ukraine, on 16th January `24, the journey having been delayed due to car preparation requirements and then very severe weather just before Christmas. In October `23, I mentioned the intended purchase, in UA, of a new car carrying road trailer, which I have now directly seen in action! The large generator requested did not materialise from Suffolk but a new request, for a dialysis machine was received ( from a military hospital). Within 9 days the exact model required had been located, technically approved and funds raised! But the requesting hospital no longer required it as they had been able to source 4 machines, so it was purchased by British Ukrainian Aid ( who remain an active support for me) and redirected to another hospital. With donors` ready agreement, the funds were used for my latest trip, transport and specialist supplies costs. I have also been able to take a fourth `John Grose` free loaned Luton van load of living aids continually donated from `Medequip` to the Ukrainian warehouse in London. I praise God for all the above provision!

This mission I was fortunately accompanied by Viktor, a Ukrainian man, as co-driver from the UK to his home town of Kyiv. Very grateful for his experience of negotiating the snow and ice-covered country roads! I then completed the remaining across country deliveries, of the car and supplies, alone, rested a couple of days and then handed over the front-line prepared car the mechanics had worked their long hours magic on!. It is always a long slow journey home via various means, but satisfying to know the deliveries achieved and all possible done. The sufferings inherent in war are so profound and far reaching in breadth and time and inevitably regularly visiting a war zone can bring these into inescapable focus, from the obvious horrors of human loss and environment destruction, to the toll of weariness accumulated by those living under martial law restrictions, the daily hard news, the frequent wail of air raid sirens and ever-present threat of the known and unknown. As I write I am thinking of Anastasia, the Lviv Shelter coordinator, in hospital due to anxiety provoked concerns for her baby due at the end of February, whilst her husband and son who received the goods delivered, were leaving for the front line the following morning. But, as always I remain in awe of the Ukrainian spirit I see rising in these circumstances, tears I see rapidly changing to defiant laughter and the determination to keep standing, and more! The resilience in adversity, the ingenuity ( thank you Ivanovitch for unfreezing my car!), the abundance of warm hospitality, even from a materially poor elderly couple pressing a meal upon me, as I visited to check their needs as requested by a friend. There are always so many people contributing to enable these trips and support to be provided – and regrettably not the space to publicly appreciate every large and small valued individual offering! At the end of each trip I create a video thanks and send personally to all I have contact details for. Pete Elliston ( Essex) bought, undertook extensive repairs and donated the vehicle for this trip. Rick, a soldier in Wales, donated some military protective clothing and other survival kit.

Churches active in prayer and donations include; St Mary`s Hadleigh, Ipswich international Church, All Saints Kesgrave and Bealings, St Mary`s Burstall, Felixstowe URC and a church in Sussex. Other groups supporting include; Kesgrave Ukraine Hub ( Natalie) Ipswich Polish community ( Magda), Morrisons Hadleigh (Lisa), the Ansell Centre (donated for medical supplies), Mission Ukraine. As well as the faithful British locals helping these endeavours, there are numerous resident Ukrainians being active in many ways, for which I am so grateful. Olena, Natalie and Sasha being such key local partners, but of course many in Ukraine too! I am encouraged that there remains such a high level of local compassion and wise concern for the sufferings of Ukraine, and touched by the example of the “Mens Room” barbers who donated my haircut fee, on a hasty visit this week! The Ukrainian recipients of your care tell me it is “priceless”! I have already received some support towards the next trip, but much is needed still in addition to the funds required for delivery ( fuel, ferry, return travel costs etc – I pay for food etc and any cheap hotel needed ); a 4x4 vehicle for the usual conversion to front line recovery transport, the priority material items ( eg; medical etc and hygiene, vehicle maintenance tools, generators, high quality thermal clothing only – nothing less can be afforded the very limited space, blankets etc). If you wish to assist please contact me on the number below, use https://gofund.me/cb2f46a8 or access the QR code below to donate via my “GoFundMe” ( administered by registered charity BUA), or liaise with a relevant community group. My sincere thanks, and on behalf of Ukrainian recipients, to all who help in any way. God bless and keep you all, David Jacobs 07500531901

ARMENIA Many of you fondly remember our Armenian family: Anna, Mayis, Edmond, and Eduard. It's hard to believe that it has been over 6 years since they had to go back to Armenia, and since then, they have faced many troubles and worries. Mayis is still a volunteer in the Armenian army, living right on the border with Azerbaijan. The family says they never know what tomorrow will bring. Anna is a school governor and works tirelessly looking after the boys while Mayis is at the army (voluntarily, with no pay). Anna's role as a school governor is also volunteer work. Children and parents at the school love Anna, and they would love her to be a school’s headmaster. However, sadly, she has never been given a chance to secure a paid job at the school. Life is hard for them, but the family says they always feel our continuous prayers and support. Thanks to our phone calls during tough times and our willingness to listen to their troubles, it makes life a bit easier for them. The family is grateful for the financial support, allowing them to have food on the table and send the boys to school. Schools are in a very poor state, and to simply function, all parents have to pay around £100 per child. With no income in the family (they used to have a big farm and lived comfortably before being persecuted for supporting the opposition party, with all their livestock destroyed ), having no future for the boys with no education was a real possibility. Thanks to your kind donations, the boys can enjoy going to school and doing really well. The boys often talk about the UK and cherish warm memories. Thanks to the latest support sent by the church for Christmas, the boys were allowed to have presents. Edmond asked for a Harry Potter costume as he wanted to participate in the school play, reminiscent of when he first came to Kesgrave and the Heath school had a book day. Little Eduard received a toy puppy from Father Christmas. Anna and Mayis are incredibly grateful for your ongoing kindness, giving them a chance to keep hoping for a better future. If you would

like to support the family, please talk to any of our ministers, or you can donate via BACS payment to KESGRAVE PAROCHIAL CHURCH COUNCIL Sort code: 08 92 99 Account: 65453375 Reference: Armenia Our treasurer Emma will then send it to Robin, who will in turn send it directly to Anna.

BROOMHILL POOL CAMPAIGN 2002 - 2024 Broomhill Pool is a Grade 2 listed,art-deco lido built in 1938; it closed in 2002 and the campaign to see it restored and re-opened has been ongoing. It is located in Sherrington Road, Ipswich, next to the Broomhill Library and is approximately 5 miles from our church, if you travel down the main Colchester Road. Over the years a finance package was assembled with the Heritage Lottery Fund, Ipswich Borough Council and leisure company Fusion

Lifestyle all contributing and preliminary work actually started in 2020 just before Covid hit. The impact of the lockdowns and the restrictions that followed had a devastating financial effect on sports and leisure centres and it is only just recently that fresh finance arrangements have been put in place. The current hope is that the pool will open in 2026, with updated allthe-year round facilities as well as the pool itself of course! Nationally, there has been a modest lido revival due to a number of factors, including a wish to save these unique open air pools, the rise in 'Wild Swimming' and the far more extensive use of wet-suits. Several of these pools are open all the year round for cold water swimming. One of the best books on British lidos and open air pools is still Janet Smith's "Liquid Assets" published in 2005; it is written with a breadth of clarity and vision and also provided us with valuable publicity in the early years of our campaign.
