THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Normality will be resumed…
just as soon as we’ve decided what normality is. Douglas Adams, The
Hitch-hikers Guide to the Galaxy

Of course, normality is constantly changing. Steam power, the internal
combustion engine, the electric light bulb, aircraft, to mention but four,
have transformed lives over the last century. A mere 15 years ago
Apple launched the first iPhone onto an unsuspecting public; now two
thirds of the world own a smartphone device, a sophisticated computer
in your pocket, bringing the world to your fingertips. It can even make
telephone calls…
The last 16 months has brought unprecedented change to most people’s
lives. Some have found it lonely and isolating. Others have welcomed

the chance to step back from the normal busyness of life and explore
new things. For some the kitchen table has become the office desk, for
some the school room (and perhaps a new-found respect for the skills of
teachers). Many other essential workers have continued to provide
health care, food, delivery services, not to mention the all-important
cleaning of hospitals and workplaces.

Two thousand years ago, a bunch of Galilean fishermen were swept off
their boats by a simple call to follow an itinerant preacher in a life-
changing decision. They embraced new habits of prayerfulness and
service. Their witness (with a little help from the Holy Spirit) spread
the Good News of Jesus Christ and transformed the world.

As formal Covid restrictions are lifted (not that the virus is going away
anytime soon), perhaps it’s a good time to consider what the ‘new
normal’ of life should be. What have you really missed doing – contact
with friends and family, perhaps, or singing, or attending a football
match. What turns out to have been less important? Do you want to go
back into the same rut of 18 months ago? Or try something
new? Could some of the Holy Habits we are currently discussing in the
10:00 Zoom service guide you into a new direction? God would no
doubt be chuffed, but it might transform your life for the better too (not
to mention those around you).

“Normality” might be resumed. It’s up to each of us to decide what that
is.

Martyn Shakespeare,

Reader

SERVICES & EVENTS during Lighting Project
As of August, the All Saints Kesgrave will start work on the Lighting
Project, which is expected to take 8-10 weeks. During this period, the
church will be closed to everyone except the installers. This will keep
health & safety risks to a minimum. Alternative worship
arrangements therefore had to be provided.

Our 8:30am Holy Communion service will be held in the Church Hall
for the entire time of the Lighting Installation.

Thursday Holy Communions at 11.00am will take place in the
Church Hall during August, and in Fred Upson Hall (the former Royal
British Legion Hall) in September.
St. Mary’s Church at Playford and All Saints Little Bealings will
warmly welcome you at their traditional Sunday Services at 10.00am
in August and September. Schedules of services can be found on our
website, as well as this Newsletter "What's On".

Fortnightly on Mondays, Silver Screen Lite will take place in the
Church Hall at 2.30pm.

On the first Sunday of each month in September and October at 6.30pm,
Evensong will be held at Fred Upson Hall (the former Royal British
Legion Hall).

During September, we hope to resume Messy Church and Coffee,
Chat & Play for our children on alternate Tuesdays at 10.00am from
the Church Hall.

We will continue to use the Zoom platform for Zoom After Hours,
Zoom Pub Quiz, and Zoom Evensong.

As of 1st of August, Benefice Zoom Services at 10.00am (renamed to
FIG ZOOM CHURCH) will be conducted from the Church Hall (as
long as restrictions / advice and the need dictates). Therefore, in
addition to Zoom (which will continue) you are welcome to attend in
person if you prefer!

In a relaxed service format similar to former (pre-Covid) FIG Family
Services, where we welcome all ages and families for an optional cup of
hot beverage and a biscuit for worship, prayer activities for children and
fellowship.

The Hall will be well-ventilated and please wear a mask if practical.
If you would rather participate via Zoom, you may do so from either
home or away. Simply use the Link available from the website.
Those in the Church Hall who prefer to stay off camera can do so in a "
camera free zone".

As of the 19th of July, face coverings are not mandatory, but we
would like to encourage you to use a mask IF YOU CAN as a way of
helping. The choice is yours and you will not be judged either way.

If you would like more information, please visit our website

RIDE AND STRIDE
“Ride and Stride” is the new name for the “Suffolk Historic Churches
Bike Ride” which happens annually on the 2nd Saturday of September
(this year it is the 11th ).
Gary (Jones) and I are stepping out this year on behalf of ASK and we
would love you to join us and/or sponsor us! We plan to set off at
10.00am and make our way from All Saints to the Roman Catholic
Church via Playford and Little Bealings Churches.
Here is the link for our Just Giving page but we are happy to pass on
cash dropped through my door at 4 Wades Grove too.

HOLY HABITS,
Zoom Services and Bible Studies
In our next Bible studies in August and September we'll continue our
Zoom theme of "Holy Habits" from the Bible Reading Fellowship.

Holy Habits is an initiative to nurture Christian discipleship. It explores
Luke's model of church found in Acts 2:42-47, identifies ten habits and
encourages the development of a way of life formed by them.

For those who wish to further their study of this excellent series, there is
a huge wealth of information available for purchase and viewing on the
Bible Reading Fellowship website.
www.brfonline.org.uk/collections/holy-habits

The ten “Holy Habits” are:

Fellowship, Prayer, Gladness and Generosity, Serving, Worship,
Sharing Resources, Making New Disciples, Breaking Bread, Eating
Together and Bible Teaching

On August 1st, the sermon will focus on another "Holy Habit" -
BREAKING BREAD, and the Bible Study will examine how early
Christians found God in everything and shared their lives together. They
made mistakes, they didn’t always share and yet they found something
so special that they tried to follow Christ’s example. So they, like him,
took bread, the ordinary and everyday; they gave thanks to God, they
broke it, they shared it and they consumed it. Through breaking bread,
we too are invited to gather and take the everyday; thanking God for it,
breaking it, sharing it and eating it. The words Jesus used at the Last
Supper and the use of both "breaking bread AND eating together" show
that "breaking bread" included whatever they did for Holy Communion.
“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship,
to the breaking of bread and to prayer.”
Please join our session on Wednesday 4th of August (7.30pm)

We will be preaching a sermon on “EATING TOGETHER” on
Sunday 15th of August, and midweek Bible Study is an opportunity to
explore EATING TOGETHER in greater depth. The joy of eating
together, the value of table fellowship for deepening relationships, the
missional fruitfulness of shared meals and the opportunities for sharing
faith, biblical study, prayer and worship around the meal table have all

been rediscovered many times by both new and ancient forms of church.
Holy Habits provides another opportunity to explore and live this godly
practice.

"They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and
sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favour of all the people."

Session will be taking place on Wednesday 18th of August (7.30pm)

A sermon on another one of the “Holy Habits” will be delivered on
August 29th - GLADNESS And GENEROSITY. This Holy habit will
be discussed further during Zoom Bible Study.

The church was born in gladness: gladness for what God had done
through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus; gladness at the
outpouring of the Spirit at Pentecost. There was gladness in the home, in
the temple and out on the streets.

Gladness and Generosity is a joyous and a challenging Holy Habit. It is
often in the darkest places that the light of gladness or joy shines most
brightly.

Being glad and generous is a Christian way of life.

"They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and
sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favour of all the people."

Session will take place on Wednesday 1st of September (7.30pm)

Finally On Sunday 5th of September Robin will deliver his sermon on
the last of the “ Holy Habits”- BIBLICAL TEACHING. In our
midweek Zoom Bible study, we will delve deeper into understanding
Scripture and there will also be an introduction to our new 8-week
Zoom BIBLE COURSE.

We hope that as we discover more about what the Bible says and how it
can guide us, we will develop a passion for biblical teaching that will
change our life, and the world through it.
“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship,
to the breaking of bread and to prayer.”

Please join our session on Thursday 9th of September (7.30pm)

To register your interest please respond to Robin by email

New and familiar faces are very welcome!

LIGHTING PROJECT AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER 2021
We are now in the final stages of preparation for the Lighting Project: if
all goes according to plan, the work should start on August 2nd! The
church will be closed to all services and activities during the re-wiring
and Natalie is putting full details of the alternative arrangements in this

newsletter and on the website: check back at regular intervals or ask
any of the Ministers for updates.
We are also in the final weeks of fundraising, so please continue to pray
for this and for the safety of all those working in the church during
August and September: re-wiring a building that spans the centuries
from 1280 to 2021 is no easy task. This project has brought together a
wide variety of skills and I will do a full write-up and acknowledgement
for the October newsletter.
Thank you to everyone who has supported this endeavour over the last
three years!

SILVER SCREEN LITE
We will continue to show one of the classic sitcoms for Silver Screen
Lite on Mondays 2nd and 16th of August and Mondays 6th and 20th of
September.
During the duration of the lighting project, this event will be held in the
Church Hall.
It has been a pleasure to see so many people get so much out of those
sessions so far. Come along and enjoy laughter and companionship with
us.
Each session runs from 2.30pm to 3.30pm. As our toilet facilities can
only be used in the case of necessity, we propose the whole session to
be a maximum of an hour with the possibility of leaving at half way if
necessary.

If you have not already indicated through the Help Centre that you
would like to attend, please let Robin know by either phone 623388
or email [email protected]

WEEKLY PRAYER EMAIL
For the last year, since the first restrictions, we have been praying
together each Wednesday for people and topics that are on our hearts.
Initially this replaced our Wednesday morning Prayer service in church
during lock-downs and restrictions, and also supplemented the "prayer
book" in church, however it has now become wider. In praise to God
over this time we have seen so much answered prayer, with around 35
people joining in the weekly prayers.

For each topic raised, we know there is so much prayer from our group,
and we can be sure that God knows what is best for each person or item
he and will listen and answer. The more people that pray together, the
better still, as God has much purpose in us praying together. So if you
have a prayer you would like to submit, or if you would like to receive
the weekly prayers, please don't hold back and instead please contact
us.

2 Corinthians 1:11 "You also must help us by prayer, so that many will
give thanks on our behalf for the blessing granted us through the
prayers of many."

Each week prayer requests and updates are sent in and gathered
together. Examples would be for people who are sick or going through a
difficult time, or for a situation that needs prayer. Please be sure that
you have permission for us to pray for someone, who may also be made
anonymous if preferred, and of course avoid including anything that is
confidential- God knows the details anyway.

On Wednesday morning I send out the combined list of prayers, aiming
to send these by 8:00am.. These also include some weekly prayers and
reflections contributed by Sybil Holbrook or Mary Bendell. For anyone
raised to us for prayer, we continue to pray for that person each week

until the originator asks us to stop, along with any updates from the
originator. In this way we are persistent in prayer and can provide much
prayer support through difficult times.

This is different to the prayer chain, which is for more urgent requests
that can't wait till next Wednesday (please see next item).

If you would like to receive the weekly prayers email, or if you would
like to submit a prayer request for the weekly prayers, please contact
[email protected] or 07857 838678.

"Pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks, for this is the will of
God in Christ Jesus concerning you". 1 Thessalonians 5:17

PRAYER CHAIN

If at any time you have an urgent need for prayer, please consider
contacting the prayer chain. A team of our ministers and faithful people
will provide prayer support quickly, usually the same day or
sooner. Prayers are confidential to the prayer chain although if required
people can be made anonymous.

If preferred, you can discuss your prayer with Sybil or John first, who
can write the prayer for you. Prayer chain requests are not included in
the weekly prayers email unless it is requested- so please ask if you
wish for your prayer to be included in the weekly prayers.

To send in a request to the prayer chain, contact either Sybil Holbrook
or John Wittgreffe as below or email [email protected]

Sybil: [email protected] 07428 001819

John: [email protected] 07857 838678

RETREAT REFLECTION FROM MOTHER ANNE –
Order of St Benedict

(This was a talk given on retreat July 15th – 19th, adapted slightly for
the newsletter)

Over the years you’ve been coming here you have each been changed
(through the influence of the Rule of St Benedict); the world around us
has changed too in ways we never anticipated and that will have had its
impact too.

We have been shown how little we are in control of our lives, much as
we might like to think that science and technology can solve all our
problems. I have been so aware of the suffering of those who find
themselves at the bottom of the heap in various ways, in this country
and especially in countries which were already struggling with the gross
economic inequalities of this world.

St Benedict himself was living through times when civilisation was
collapsing and the barbarian hordes were destroying the Roman Empire
and his rule still carries a wisdom that can provide a stable foundation
for life in times when things fall apart. The Rule asks us to seek God, to
put him first, to find our fulfilment in living lives of simplicity.

In this reflection we can use the image of trees, which create a healing
atmosphere and gradually change the world, simply by the way they are.
Trees are quietly there, planted in a particular place and creating their
own micro-climate. They bring shade and humidity which protects other
creatures and encourages the rain to fall; in places where deserts are
encroaching, planting trees is an important way of turning the tide back.
We also know how important trees are in absorbing carbon dioxide and
slowing down soil erosion; a tree’s complex root network acts as a filter
and helps prevent the transport of sediment and chemicals into streams.
They are critical to all aspects of life: our health, our economy, our
environment.

Benedict’s call to stability asks us to put down roots and to grow in a
particular place, just like trees. Our roots go down deep into God’s love

and enable us more and more to act from that heart of love, changing
the atmosphere around us. The way we do every little thing in our daily
lives brings a bit more of God’s love into the world. We can gradually
change the deserts of alienation and despair into networks of loving care

(even if we feel that our small efforts can make little difference).

We know that trees are not solitary, but communicate and support one
another through their roots. I find that a powerful image of how each
one of us, planted in a particular place, has roots that interconnect with
others, deep underground. We are all tapping into those same springs of
living water: I see the Abbey as a deep well filled with God’s love,
replenished day by day through our prayer here and the prayers of all
our Friends feeding in through those roots. When life is tough for us we
are sustained by the prayers of others, whether or not they know what is
happening.

Humanity will not be able to change its ways without a profound
spiritual renewal and a turning towards ways of love and respect for all
people, and all created things. Whatever the future holds, I give thanks
that through your lives a bit more of God’s love is being incarnated in
this world.

The prayer of “Sucipe” translated as “Uphold” or “Lift up”

Uphold me, O Lord, according to your promise that I may live and let
my hope not be put to shame.

THE ASK JOURNAL

Farewell Ollie!

Youth Minister, Quiz Master, involvement in the ‘After Hours’ service,
fount of all knowledge regarding all technical issues…. The name ‘Ollie
Scase’ is synonymous with all the above roles at All Saints Church, plus a
whole host more that I can think of! Cheerful, enthusiastic, innovative and

supportive, Ollie has spent the past 3 years with us since he began his role as
Youth Minister in September 2018. He has been an incredible asset to the
Ministry Team, church as a whole and the wider community, including his
involvement with the students at Kesgrave High School. Therefore, it is with
great sadness that we have to inform you that as of the 8th August, Ollie will
be moving to pastures new. “I have been offered a position in software
development locally and have decided that accepting this role is the right
decision for me at the current time in order to gain some more life
experience” states Ollie. “I’m currently working on two final 5000-word
assignments, and then my degree is complete, although the date of our
graduation ceremony at Ridley Hall is still unknown at present due to
current circumstances with Covid. I have really enjoyed my time at All
Saints, and I really feel that I’ve grown both professionally and personally
over the past three years. This won’t be the end of my ministry vocation,
but for now I’m exploring other avenues and I look forward to finding out
what God has planned for me in the future.”

Ollie will give his final sermon on Sunday 8th August at FIG Family which
will also be broadcast online via Zoom. As a church we are hoping to host a
shared buffet lunch on Sunday 31st October to say a formal farewell to Ollie,
and also to Sally Letman and Dimitri Theulings. More details to follow
nearer the time but do save the date for your diaries!

On behalf of everyone at All Saints, I’d like to say a big thank you to Ollie
for everything he has done during his time with us. You will be missed, but
we wish you all the very best for the future!

Sally’s Sponsored Walk

Sunday 27th June saw hundreds of people take part in The Orwell
Challenge, an annual event which is open to walkers and runners and
has 3 principal routes of 13, 19 or 25 miles. Whilst many of us were
settling down to Zoom church at 10am with a hot cup of coffee, our
very own Sally Wainman had already been out walking since 8.15am! I
spoke with Sally to find out more about the day.

“I completed the Levington Loop and after walking to and from the
event as well, I walked a total of 16.6 miles. I had been in training for
the event for several weeks beforehand, walking 3-4 miles a day, four or
five times a week, which really helped prepare me stamina wise. The
loop takes participants along the shore of the River Orwell and at low
tide progress here was slower due to the thick, black mud! Every 3
miles roughly there was a checkpoint with drinks and a marshal to
encourage us along, and at 4pm I reached the finish line! The Orwell
Challenge has a particularly nice atmosphere because everyone is
walking or running for the charity of their choice. I chose to raise
money for the All Saints Church Lighting Fund and thanks to my
sponsors have managed to contribute £350 to this worthwhile cause.”

Congratulations Sally and thank you!

the Lighting Project and we are now moving towards the final stages of

of all the hard work, planning and generosity that’s gone into the last

possible and for the support towards fulfilling our Parish Share
commitment and maintaining all the work done at All Saints.
