JUNE 2022

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
70 not out! It’s quite an achievement, as we mark the Platinum Jubilee
of the Queen’s reign at the beginning of June. For nearly 90% of the
UK population, she has been the only monarch they have known. And
yet, without the unexpected abdication of her Uncle, she would never
have been in line for the throne at all. Married in the post-war austerity
of 1947, her accession to the throne was on 6th February 1952 (corona-
tion day wasn’t actually until 2nd June 1953), which makes her the long-
est-serving Queen ever (taking the title from Queen Victoria who man-
aged just under 64 years), as well as the longest-serving living monarch
-- although she still has a couple of years to go to achieve the record of

the longest-serving monarch ever. Plus, as head of the Commonwealth,
her head appears on at least 33 different currencies (not to mention
stamps!) Amongst many other things, she has also kept up with tech-
nology, from making the first STD telephone call from Bristol to Edin-
burgh in 1958, through sending her first e-mail in 1976, and is now be-
lieved to use an iPad, laptop and Wii games console (inspired by her
grandson), not to mention a Facebook account. Supported through
those long years, until just recently, by her husband Prince Philip (who
also achieved the record of being the longest-serving British monarch
consort), she has been an important ambassador for this country, and
served it with diligence.

By happy coincidence (or design) we also celebrate the outpouring of
the Holy Spirit onto Jesus’ disciples at the festival of Pentecost on the
same weekend. Whenever I have doubts about the Christian faith, I al-
ways hold on to the power of the Spirit, transforming those ordinary,
largely uneducated disciples, from frightened men after the crucifixion
into bold witnesses to the message of Jesus Christ at Pentecost. Jesus
prepared them (although as the Gospels record, it appears to have been
an uphill task at times) but without their witness, and that of generations
to follow equally inspired by the Holy Spirit, there would be no Church
today. And the gift is there for us, too; we just need to make room for
Him in our lives.

It is clear, from recent comments in her annual Christmas addresses,
that her Christian faith has played an immensely important part in the
Queen’s life, sustaining her in bad times, as well as good. It has no
doubt helped her to be such a shining example of duty and service, and
a worthy upholder of her titular title, Defender of Faith.
… May she defend our laws,

and ever give us cause

to sing, with heart and voice,

God Save the Queen.
She has. We will. Thank you Ma’am.
[With thanks to the Guinness Book of Records and the IET for the fun
facts – many more at The Queen's Platinum Jubilee: 70 years of record

BENEFICE JUBILEE FLOWER FESTIVAL

Our Benefice will be celebrating the Queen’s 70 years of service over the
Jubilee weekend, Thursday 2nd to Saturday 4th June. Little Bealings
church will be hosting a flower festival, Fynn Valley walks, and much
more. Come enjoy celebrating, rambling, creams teas, light lunches, dress
posh, dress casual, dress as royalty, get your walking boots out, or gen up
for the Right Royal Quiz evening - there’s something for everyone!

TWO Fynn Valley walks with a royalty theme led by Francis and
John. Francis says, ‘To coincide with the festival, our regular walking
group invites you to join us on a ‘royal ramble’ around Bealings and Play-
ford. To add a bit of fun we’ll be revealing various local ‘royal’ connec-
tions and stories we’re uncovered, which we hope will entertain you on

the way round. The walks will be about 4 miles in length and will take
place on Thursday 2nd and Saturday 4th June, departing All Saints Church,
Little Bealings at 10am. Everyone welcome!

The tearoom and flower festival will be open and beautiful each day
10am to 5pm.

We invite children to bring their flower arrangements for the Queen.
Bring them in a jam jar or perhaps buy a block of Oasis from Hobbycraft
and make a beautiful arrangement in an ice cream tub. We will ‘grow’ a
garden fit for Sandringham! A photo will be sent to the Queen on behalf
of the children. We encourage children to come dressed as a princess, a
prince or a beefeater, or wear your usual clothes and ‘Make a Crown’
with us to wear.
Dress like royalty for our Queen’s Garden Party 12-4pm on the Fri-
day. It’s nice to dress up sometimes, so this is your opportunity to get
your posh frocks out, hats and fascinators. Is anyone brave enough to
dress as a royalty lookalike?! Come on let’s have fun. In fact, let’s cele-
brate our Queen in style!
Saturday’s grand finale closes with a 5pm Songs of Praise singing
the Queen’s favourite joyful hymns. At 6pm we conclude with a Fam-
ily Fun Evening and Right Royal Quiz.

We’re so looking forward to this weekend! Pop in at any time; or come
for the day, lovely walk, lunch and cream tea among the flowers, Songs
of Praise, and Evening fun!

If you would like to help at the event or donate a flower arrangement or
flowers, please contact Helen Wittgreffe on 07825 004585 or
[email protected]

ALL SAINTS KESGRAVE – QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY PARTY -
FOR ALL THE FAMILY On Saturday 11th June, the Queen’s offi-
cial 96th birthday, ASK will be hosting a Birthday Party to celebrate Her
Majesty. This is a Family event and we are hoping children will come
along with parents, grandparents, carers, and friends to enjoy the fun,
food, and a royal birthday theme.

Party time is between 10am-1pm. Teddy Zip Wire will be sending much
loved teddies from the top of the tower to safe landing on the grass, of
course each teddy will be thoroughly checked over first by our nurse to
ensure he/she is medically fit, and with a full medical certificate issued
before embarking on their adventure. Bring a teddy; they’ll love their first
flight, and then afternoon birthday tea.

There will be activities for children, ‘Make a Crown’, ‘Make a Royal
Guard’, Queen's Birthday trail and enjoy the fun of games such as hoop
and bucket.

Tea, coffee, cakes and party food will be available at a reasonable cost,
making this an event for the whole family. Why not dress in red, white
and blue (or any other colour if you prefer as our Queen certainly wears
the whole rainbow of colours!).

Again, we are looking for helpers on the day, if you’d like to clear ta-
bles, help with a children’s activity, or welcome at the door, please let
Natalie [email protected] or Jennie [email protected]
know.

ROYAL SILVER CAFÉ AND SONGS OF PRAISE

Sunday 12th June, is the date for All Saints Kesgrave’s Royal Silver Café
and Songs of Praise with brass band. Join us for this joyous event as we
take our much-loved Silver Café and give it a royal flourish fit for a
Queen!

We are so looking forward to June, and celebrating together.

SILVER GROUPS

Next sessions of Silver Screen are Monday 6th of June and Monday
20th of June at the Church Hall, 2pm-4pm.
Silver Screen afternoon on Monday 6th of June will be showing the film
“Race” (2016). Young Jesse Owens (Stephan James) becomes a track
and field sensation while attending the Ohio State University in the
early 1930s. With guidance from coach Larry Snyder (Jason Sudeikis),
Owens gains national recognition for breaking numerous records. After
heated debates, the United States decides not to boycott the Olympics in
Nazi Germany. Overcoming racism at home and abroad, Owens seizes
the opportunity to show Berlin and the world that he's the fastest man
alive.

Next sessions of Silver Games are Tuesday 7th of June and Monday
27th June at the Church, 2pm-4pm.

Come and enjoy playing the old fashioned and some modern games
such as Up-Words, Scrabble, Mexican Train, Rummikub and Scrabble
and other traditional games. Many have also enjoyed the opportunity to
just sit with friends and relax and chat to each other.

Next session of Silver Crafters is Wednesday 8th of June at the
Church, 2pm-4pm. Jan Chenery demonstrating wool spinning, Jan will
have her spinning wheel and bags of wool spun and un-spun. Also, there
will be a demonstration of flower arranging. Discover your inner florist
and find out how to create a table centre piece. Plus a demonstration of
needle felting a fascinating craft, a different way of creating pictures or
Christmas decorations. At all of these there will be the chance to have a
go!!! Plus of course you can bring your own craft to show and share.
At all of these events there will be refreshments of tea, coffee, biscuits
and cake.

DO YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW NEED PRAYER?

If at any time you or someone you know are in need of prayer, we have
an active prayer ministry who would love to pray for you. We believe
that God answers all of our prayers, as he loves us dearly and knows
just what we need. We have seen God work in so many different ways
through the prayer ministry. Please do not hesitate to contact if you feel
this can help.

If your prayer request is urgent, contact our prayer chain by call-
ing John Wittgreffe on 07857 838678 or email ask.prayer-
[email protected] specifying "Prayer Chain".

If you have an ongoing request for prayer, each Wednesday a
prayer request email goes out to ministers and faithful people who
will include your request in their prayers on Wednesday, or as soon as
possible thereafter. If you would like your prayer included, please use
the same contact as above stating "For Wednesday prayers", or both
Wednesday Prayers and Prayer Chain if appropriate.

All information is considered private to those who take part in the pray-
ers. If, however, you feel something is very sensitive, please mention
this and we will make the prayers anonymous before they go out- God
still knows who you mean!

If you would like private prayer with a minister, you can request this
and we will work something out for you. If for any reason John is una-
vailable, please contact one of our ministry team as in our contacts list.

stances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." 1 Thessa-
lonians 5:16-18

JUNE GIVING 2022

We are obviously aware, as a Church, that millions of people are going
to be struggling to survive over the coming months, as nearly every as-
pect of daily life sees sharp price rises.
If you are experiencing financial hardship or mounting debts, please
seek help through organisations like Stepchange https://www.step-
change.org/ or Christians Against Poverty https://capuk.org/

We value all the contributions that are made towards keeping our
church and the other churches in our benefice going; the financial sup-
port we receive goes into maintaining a great variety of work including
pastoral visiting, visits to care homes, all the ‘Silver’ activities (Silver
Film, Silver Games and Silver Crafts), church services across all 3
churches, Bible Studies, Childrens work and FIG services etc; we are
also liaising with Brightwell to provide support during Rev Toby Tate’s
sabbatical.

We want Playford, Little Bealings and Kesgrave to remain centres of
spiritual hope and social activity as the lockdowns certainly showed that
loneliness and isolation greatly undermined physical and mental health

THE ASK JOURNAL

I was thinking about my Nanna the other day, as I was wandering
around the PYO flower garden at The Southwold Flower Company. I
could identify a good number of the plants and flowers that were grow-
ing there, mostly because of the fact that she was an avid gardener, lov-
ing to plant bulbs and grow flowers from seed in her greenhouse, prick-
ing out and nurturing the tiny seedlings despite her failing eyesight. I
hadn’t realised as I was growing up and she chatted about her garden,
how many of those names I had absorbed over the years….Antirrhi-
nums, Lobelia, Nerines, Aubretia, Dianthus, Candytuft….It was lovely
to reminisce.

I was reminded once more of the poem that had been of comfort to my
Nanna throughout her life. I’ve shared it here before but felt it might be
enjoyed by others again. I was unsure of its origin until a member of
the congregation kindly investigated further for me and discovered it
was from a book called ‘A Believer’s Thoughts’ by Edith Hickman Di-
vall, published in 1906. It is based on Psalm 37:5 – ‘Commit your way
to the Lord; trust in Him...’

Leave in the hands of thy Father,

All that is yet unknown,

Know that He will not forsake thee,

Thou shalt not walk alone.

Over the paths that are rugged,

He will thy footsteps guide,

Only be patient and trust Him,

Only in Him abide.

That which his hand has withholden,

Seek not to do or be,

So shall he choose in his wisdom,

All that is best for thee.

our bookshelf in Tesco. The money raised from these items, helps to
support your county library service – thank you for your support.

Printing and Photocopying – did you know that you can print and pho-
tocopy items at your local library? Printing starts at 20p per single-sided
B&W sheet and photocopying at 10p per single-sided sheet. We can
also print and photocopy in colour up to A3 size. Please pop in or ring
for more details.

Don’t have a library card? All you need is some form of ID which has
your name and address on it – a driving license or council tax bill is
ideal, and we can issue you a card straight away. Children under 16
need an adult with them at time of sign up and an adult to act as guaran-
tor.
