THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
“We Belong Together”
Remember these words and who sang them? More of that later but
suffice to say the words have stayed with me since my childhood and
the thought took new meaning after my Ordination nearly 35 years ago.
As a "wet behind the ears" Curate in 1988 I wrote these words for an
article: -

Do you have to go football match to support your team or to a pop
concert to be a "groupie"? Of course, the answer is "No", but you would

be missing out if you didn't. When people ask "Do I have to go to
Church to be a follower of Jesus?" the answer is "No", but you would be
missing out if you didn't. Here is what Church meant to the first
Christians: -
With one mind they kept up their daily attendance at the Temple, and,
breaking bread in private houses, shared their meals with unaffected
joy as they praised God. Acts 2:42-46.

A lot of time has passed since 1988 and since then it has become even
harder to get to Church (or to find time for anything other than the
immediately pressing). It seems that time and life whizzes by at an
increasingly alarming rate. Of late, of course, our lives and social
engagement have been seriously affected by the Pandemic. At I write
this, restrictions have been lifted and we're making all sorts of decisions
about the "new normal".

Back now to the question at the beginning - the answer, of course, is
Pinky and Perky, two pigs with high-pitched, squeaky voices. As a child
my father showed me how to use a reel-to-reel tape machine to slow
down a recording so that normal voices sound slurred and deep. Imagine
our wonder when the same technique was used on Pinky and Perky and
you could hear normal voices! Believe or not they were not children
pretending to squeak but adults, simply singing a song in their usual
tone. In the same way that slowing down the words "we belong
together" enabled us to hear them properly, taking time to be together in
Church can enable us to bring our own life into balance.

SERVICES & EVENTS
during Lighting Project
Since August, All Saints Kesgrave has begun work on the Lighting
Project, a task that is expected to take between 8-10 weeks. During this
period, the church will be closed to everyone except the installers. This

will keep health & safety risks to a minimum. Alternative worship
arrangements therefore had to be provided.
Once we are sure when services at All Saints Kesgrave will be
resumed, our ministers will notify the congregation. To stay
informed, you can check our website regularly.

Our 8.30am Holy Communion service will be held in the Church Hall
for the entire time of the Lighting Installation.

Thursday Holy Communions at 11.00am will take place in the in Fred
Upson Hall (the former Royal British Legion Hall).
St. Mary’s Church at Playford and All Saints Little Bealings will
warmly welcome you at their Traditional Sunday Services at 10.00am
in October. Schedules of services can be found on our website, as well
as this Newsletter "What's On".

Fortnightly on Mondays, Silver Screen Lite will take place in the
Church Hall at 2.30pm.

On the Third Sunday in October at 6.30pm, Evensong will be held at
Fred Upson Hall (the former Royal British Legion Hall).

During term time in October, we will welcome our children and their
carers for Coffee, Chat & Play on Tuesdays at 10.00am at the Church
Hall.

We will continue to use the Zoom platform for Zoom After Hours and
Zoom Pub Quiz

F.I.G ZOOM CHURCH will be conducted from the Church Hall (as
long as restrictions / advice and the need dictates). Therefore, in
addition to Zoom (which will continue) you are welcome to attend in
person if you prefer!

In a relaxed service format similar to former (pre-Covid) F.I.G Family
Services, where we welcome all ages and families for an optional cup of
hot beverage and a biscuit for worship, prayer activities for children and
fellowship.

The Hall will be well-ventilated and please wear a mask if practical.
If you would rather participate via Zoom, you may do so from either
home or away. Simply use the Link available from the website.
Those in the Church Hall who prefer to stay off camera can do so in a "
camera free zone".

Face coverings are not mandatory, but we would like to encourage
you to use a mask IF YOU CAN as a way of helping. The choice is
yours and you will not be judged either way.

If you would like more information, please visit our website

ZOOM BIBLE STUDY-
THE BIBLE COURSE
The theme of "Holy Habits" merged with our last message on Biblical
Teaching to lead us into the next approach - 8- week "The Bible
Course".

In the same way as we did in the past with our "Holy Habits” Theme,
the sermon will be delivered on Sunday and then followed by a
Midweek Zoom Bible Study.

An eight-session course helping you explore the BIG story.

Big, complex, old … just some of the words people use to describe the
Bible. Sound familiar? That’s where The Bible Course comes in. The
course will increase your confidence, equip you to read the Bible better
and help you to see its relevance to daily life. The course provides a
birds-eye view of the world’s bestselling book.

Over eight interactive sessions, it combines video teaching, group
discussion, personal reflection and daily readings.

We would like to invite you to join us on Zoom to learn together, delve
deeper into understanding Scripture and to see how the books of the
Bible are part of one big story.

Please join our 1st Session on Wednesday 13th of October at 7.30pm

2nd Session - Thursday 28th of October at 7.30pm

You can access the Zoom link on the "What's on" section of our
website, www.askesgrave.org

BLESSING AND DEDICATION OF THE NEW LIGHTING:
SONGS OF PRAISE 5PM
On October 31st there will be a Songs of Praise Service at 5pm to which
we have invited the Dean of St Edmundsbury Cathedral, the Very
Reverend Joe Hawes.

This service will be a celebration of 3 years of effort directed towards a
re-wire of the whole church and replacement of the old lighting with
new LED lights. The porch and the chapel will be on timer lighting so
that the church is visible after dusk; there are new PIR sensors for the
exits, illuminating the immediate paths and there will be better Fire
signage above the doors.

This has been a massive team effort with so many people contributing
time, energy, creativity and money towards making it possible.
We also have to thank the main three firms involved: Norwich
Architectural Lighting Company for the Design and Fittings,
Interconnection Ltd for the Rako Smart Controls and IS Electrical for
the installation.

The Revd Joe Hawes will preach that evening and then bless and
dedicate the Lighting.

This is also a special day because at the 10.00am Service we will be
showing our appreciation for the work of those who have now moved

on to pastures new:
to Rev Sally Letman, to our former Youth Worker Ollie Scase and to
Rev Dimitri Theulings who shared his wisdom and gentle humour with
us during his training placement at Kesgrave.

Please put the date in your diary for one or both of these services!

THANK YOU TO ALL THOSE IN OUR CHURCH FAMILY AND IN
THE KESGRAVE COMMUNITY WHO HAVE SUPPORTED US

Sally Wainman

F.I.G ZOOM CHURCH-
PATRONAL FESTIVAL & DEDICATION
For All Saints Church Kesgrave, Sunday 31st of October 2021 at
10.00am will be a Sunday of celebration for the lighting project.

This will, in fact, be a triple celebration: Patronal Festival, the
Dedication to the New Lighting and an opportunity to thank three of our
ministers who have left for pastures new.

We will conclude the celebration with refreshments, so everyone has the
opportunity to enjoy cake and fellowship with each other after the
service.
If you would rather participate via Zoom, you may do so from either
home or away.
You can find the link on our website, www.askesgrave.org under
'What's on'.
We will be collecting for Ollie and Dimitri, if you would like to
contribute, please speak to any of our ministers or donate via BACS
with reference “Ollie”, Dimitri” OR “Ollie & Dimitri”.

COFFEE, CHAT & PLAY

Return to in-person sessions!

We are excited to announce that September 2021 sees the return of in-
person children's activities at All Saints! It has been 18 months since we
last met in the church hall, but with the removal of Covid restrictions in
July, we are ready to welcome you back at the start of the new school
year. Initially we will commence with Coffee, Chat & Play sessions.
The main church is currently closed due to the completion of our
lighting project which means that unfortunately we do not have full
access to all rooms within the church hall and so we are not in a position
to run Messy Church at the present time. We will continue to monitor
the situation, and will reintroduce Messy Church sessions as soon as is
feasible.

Sessions will run from 10am to 11.30am and cost £1.50 per child. In
order for us to plan for numbers after such an extended break, it would
help us greatly if you felt able to, to let us know each week if you plan
on coming to our sessions. Please email me - Jennie Fidler - Children &
Family worker and session leader. We completely understand that life
with little ones doesn't always go to plan however, so please do not
worry if you either can't make sessions or only decide to come at the last
minute! You can be sure of a very warm welcome. We look forward to
seeing you once again!

Jennie and the Team

SILVER SCREEN LITE
We will continue to show one of the classic sitcoms for Silver Screen
Lite on Mondays 4th and 18th of October. The event will be held in the
Church Hall while the lighting project is underway.

It has been a pleasure to see so many people get so much out of those
sessions so far. Come along for an enjoyable afternoon and
companionship.

Each session runs from 2.30pm to 3.30pm. As our toilet facilities can
only be used in the case of necessity, we propose the whole session to
be a maximum of an hour with the possibility of leaving at half way if
necessary.

If you have not already indicated through the Help Centre that you
would like to attend, please let Robin know by either phone 623388
or email [email protected]

DO YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW NEED PRAYER?

If at any time you or someone you know are in need of prayer, we have
an active prayer ministry who would love to pray for you. We believe
that God answers all of our prayers, as he loves us dearly and knows
just what we need. We have seen God work in so many different ways
through the prayer ministry. Please do not hesitate to contact if you feel
this can help.

If your prayer request is urgent, contact our prayer chain by
calling John Wittgreffe on 07857 838678 or email
[email protected] specifying "Prayer Chain".
If you have an ongoing request for prayer, each Wednesday a
prayer request email goes out to ministers and faithful people who
will include your request in their prayers on Wednesday, or as soon as
possible thereafter. If you would like your prayer included, please use
the same contact as above stating "For Wednesday prayers", or both
Wednesday Prayers and Prayer Chain if appropriate.

All information is considered private to those who take part in the
prayers. If, however, you feel something is very sensitive, please
mention this and we will make the prayers anonymous before they go
out- God still knows who you mean!

If you would like private prayer with a minister, you can request this
and we will work something out for you. If for any reason John is
unavailable, please contact one of our ministry team as in our contacts
list.

"Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all
circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." 1
Thessalonians 5:16-18

FRED UPSON HALL
Formerly the Royal British Legion Hall
A cleaner is needed by Kesgrave Church of England Charity for 1 and
half hours twice a week to keep this hall clean and welcoming for hirers.

There is room for some flexibility about when these hours would be
worked.

All Saints Church is also looking for holiday cover cleaning in the
Church hall. This is for just 3 weeks a year for 4 hours per week.

If you are interested in either or both these positions, please phone
Ann Fenton on 01473 622180 for more information.

THE ASK JOURNAL

Kayaking alongside Jesus

Last weekend we took our kayak down to the river at Waldringfield. I
love arriving there early in the morning as there are very few people
about and there is usually the smell of food in the air as The Maybush
pub prepares for breakfast orders! Waldringfield is one of my favourite
places to go. I always think it is the type of place that you would long to
live near to if you had visited whilst on holiday, so I feel very blessed
that it is on our doorstep.

When we arrived, the river was calm and peaceful and there was just a
light breeze. Paddling into the water to hop onto the kayak can be a bit
of a shock to the system, but surprisingly that day it seemed warmer
than the air temperature. As we have a double kayak, two people can set
off on the water whilst two remain on the shore or go swimming, and
then we swap a bit later. Soon, it was the girl’s turn to have a go, and we
set off down the river at tremendous speed because in the time we had
been there the tide had turned and was on its way out and the wind was
behind us. There were lots of boats, mainly yachts, to weave in between,
a stark contrast from the long, cold days of lockdown, when the
boatyard housed them for their winter lay-up. We are always fascinated
by the variety of types, the names and where each boat has travelled
from. We have a few favourites, one of which is a beautiful dark green
wooden boat called ‘Jesus’ - the name is picked out in bright white paint
which you can just about read from the shore. In order to reach the boat,
the owner must of course row across the short expanse of water in the

tender. On the shore sit all the tenders and after a short search you again
spot the name ‘Jesus’! As we turned our kayak around to head back up
the river, the situation suddenly changed, and we really had to dig deep
to paddle against the tide and into the wind to make decent headway.
We paddled and paddled, slowly passed ‘Jesus’, and headed back to
shore to meet the boys.

Our morning with the kayak got me thinking how similar life can be.
Sometimes all is calm and still and very little effort seems to be required
to make progress. We’re either pottering safely on dry land or paddling
serenely along through tranquil waters. At other times however, the
waters of life can suddenly turn choppy, we’re against the tide and the
wind is blowing us off course no matter how hard we paddle. We don’t
know what to do or which way to turn. And yet whatever situation we
find ourselves in, I was reminded that Jesus is with us. Just as the large,
green boat ‘Jesus’ was in the water and the Jesus tender on dry land, in
every possible situation, he is always by our side. In Matthew 28:20 we
are told “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age”.
Through the presence of the Holy Spirit, he never leaves us, he hears
our prayers, has a plan for us, and guides and comforts us. What an
amazing truth that is!

EXTRACTS FROM ROMANS 12
The Message translation by Eugene Peterson (1932-2018)
Some years ago Bishop Mike led a Study Morning in Martlesham and
chose extracts from Romans 12 as the main theme. Pastor Eugene
Peterson laboured over The Message because he wanted the Bible to be
more accessible to people: “The letters I prize most,” he said, “are from
prisoners. They are written in phonetic script and say ‘I never knew I
could read the Bible!’”

So I thought I would share this with you; these are edited extracts from
Paul’s Letter to the Romans, and the translation is part of the fruit of Mr
Peterson’s life.

Sally Wainman September 9th 2021

PLACE YOUR LIFE BEFORE GOD:
Romans 12
So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday,
ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-
around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what
God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so
well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking.
Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside
out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to
it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level
of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed
maturity in you.

In this way we are like the various parts of a human body. Each part
gets its meaning from the body as a whole, not the other way around.
The body we’re talking about is Christ’s body of chosen people. Each of
us finds our meaning and function as a part of his body. But isolated and
on our own we wouldn’t amount to much, would we? So since we find
ourselves fashioned into all these excellently formed and marvellously
functioning parts in Christ’s body, let’s just go ahead and be what we
were made to be, without enviously or pridefully comparing ourselves
with each other, or trying to be something we aren’t.

If you preach, just preach God’s Message, nothing else; if you help, just
help, don’t take over; if you teach, stick to your teaching; if you give

encouraging guidance, be careful that you don’t get bossy; if you’re put
in charge, don’t manipulate; if you’re called to give aid to people in
distress, keep your eyes open and be quick to respond; if you work with
the disadvantaged, don’t let yourself get irritated with them or depressed
by them. Keep a smile on your face.

Love from the centre of who you are; don’t fake it. Run for dear life
from evil; hold on for dear life to good. Be good friends who love
deeply; practice playing second fiddle.
Don’t quit in hard times; pray all the harder. Help needy Christians; be
inventive in hospitality.

Amen

OCTOBER GIVING 2021:
This year our priorities have centred round both our General Giving and
the Lighting Project and we are now in the very final stages of
fundraising for the Lighting: by mid-October we hope to be restoring
the church to some normality and reaping the benefits of a brighter and
electrically safer building.
Thank you for the hundreds of donations that have made the Project
possible and for the support towards fulfilling our Parish Share
commitment and maintaining all the work done at All Saints.
Research into Giving shows that people, understandably, want to know
why they are giving and what difference it will make; this year there
will be visual evidence from the Lighting and an understanding too of
the necessity of maintaining the less dramatic day-to-day background.
All methods of Giving remain available, but the Church website has
been updated with two Donate Buttons: a Green button for General

Giving and a Blue button for supporting the Lighting Project, so please
see the website link for all other details and the updates on the improved
Parish Giving Scheme: You can now set up a Direct Debit for the PGS
without having to contact anyone at the church first.
https://www.askesgrave.org/supportus.htm
Also, most importantly, if you are experiencing financial hardship or
mounting debts please seek help through organisations like
Stepchange https://www.stepchange.org/
or Christians Against Poverty https://capuk.org/

• Occasional Giving

If you would like to support our Church financially a simple BACS
payment can be made to:

Acc Name: Kesgrave Parochial Church Council

Co-op Bank Sort Code: 08-92-99 Account No: 65453375

If you can also Gift Aid your donation, please print off a Gift Aid form
from the All Saints Kesgrave website (see Support Us) and give me a
ring on 07807 984589

• Regular Giving (Direct Debit)

For regular giving please contact the Parish Giving Scheme
(PGS) : this is a direct debit scheme with built-in options for Gift Aid
and inflation proofed giving

There are now three options for signing up:

3.) By using the new Online Direct Debit system: log onto the
Parish Giving Scheme website and find our church here:

ASK WEBSITE
Our church website www.askesgrave.org has been up and running for a
few months now, but remains an ongoing project, particularly during the
coming days and weeks in light of COVID-19 developments. We are
trying to regularly update notices and information as they become
available, as well as adding items onto our pages on The Church of
England’s ‘A Church Near You’ site –
https://www.achurchnearyou.com/church/2061/
Available on both websites are the Rev Robin Spittle’s ‘Thought for the
Times’ videos, which can be accessed easily from the home pages. If
you are on Facebook, please like and follow us on our page – All Saints
Church Kesgrave

https://www.facebook.com/Askesgrave/
– where we will also upload important developments and information,
videos and ideas for prayer and worship.

KESGRAVE LIBRARY NEWS
– OCTOBER 2021
Congratulations to all our young readers who completed this year’s
Wild World Heroes Summer Reading Challenge. This year we had
nearly 300 children sign up which is a fantastic number. The staff would
like to thank the eighteen volunteers who gave up their time over the
summer to help with the running of the challenge.

Sunday Crafts – (11.00 – 12.00 noon) Sunday crafts are gradually
being reintroduced. We have been issuing craft bags to customers
throughout September and from Sunday 12th October, customers can
ring and book their children into our weekly craft sessions. In October
we are making -

Sunday 3rd – Autumn is here, and the hedgehogs are beginning to
hibernate. Why not collect a craft bag and make your own hedgehog to
decorate your room?

Sunday 10th – Create an autumn owl picture. Don’t forget, from this
Sunday, you can phone up and book your place at the crafts sessions?

Sunday 17th – Make a scarecrow from a paper plate. What colour hat
will yours have?

Sunday 24th – Design a sea turtle to celebrate Beach Bonkers being at
the library today.

Activities are free. Parents must stay with under eights.

Covid -19 Self-Test (Rapid Antigen Tests) – Did you know that your
local library is a collection point for these tests? Please just pop along
and ask staff for however many boxes you or your family require.

Word Play Sessions – These sessions are being held at the Kesgrave
Community Centre on a Wednesday, with Tot Rock at 9.45 – 10.15 a.m.
and Baby Bounce at 10.45 – 11.15a.m. With the relaxation of covid
restrictions, these sessions are no longer bookable, but some guidelines
do still apply. If you would like to attend, please pop along to the
community centre.

Story Time –Story Time will continue every Friday outside in the
library garden, weather permitting, for as long as possible 9.45 – 10.15
a.m. Booking is no longer necessary – please pop along – we look
forward to seeing you.

Beach Bonkers – Sunday 24th October 10.00 – 12.00 noon at the
library – free activity. Have you ever held a woolly mammoth’s tooth?
Can you find the treasures hidden in the shingle beach? Plus, a plastic-
free sea creature themed craft! Pop along – we look forward to seeing
you.

Half-term events – we are currently planning an event for half-term.
More details to follow. Please look out for posters and social media
posts.

Lego Club – this is beginning again on Tuesday 12th October. Please
ring to book a place – numbers are currently limited I’m afraid.

Book Club – the library’s book clubs are returning this month. If you
are interested in returning or joining, please do give us a ring. We
currently have an afternoon and evening club. We hope to see you soon.
