Newsletter Issue 100 - 30.04.23 May 2023

ALL SAINTS KESGRAVE NEWSLETTER ISSUE NO 100 – 30.04.23 May 2023 THOUGHT FOR THE DAY May 2023 God Save the King To celebrate the coronation of King Charles III, the Hope Together Charity has produced a souvenir edition of St Matthew's Gospel. The cover of this book shows a picture of the bejewelled Coronation Crown surrounded by the Crown of Thorns and the introduction looks at the Christian symbolism inherent in the Coronation ceremony. (At the

time of writing this, I am hoping we will have at least a few copies to distribute on May 7th, kindly funded by the Parish Trust) The word 'ceremony' comes from the Latin 'caerimonia' meaning holiness, sacredness, awe, reverent rite and the Coronation in particular embodies this idea of the sacred, not least because it takes place within a Christian abbey! Now Charles became King on the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth, so why do we need a coronation? The coronation is an important symbolic formality: it is the landmark ceremony of a monarch's reign, it takes place after the period of official mourning is over for the previous king or queen and can therefore be celebrated joyously, and it is one which can be widely shared publicly; it goes hand-in-hand too with the idea of caring for others, hence the impetus for thousands of organisations to get together to help out in their local communities. It is also a ceremony which links many historic traditions together and different nations: in particular the Chrism Oil which will be used to anoint the King has come from olives grown on the Mount of Olives and has been consecrated in Jerusalem; the olives were pressed just outside Bethlehem and perfumed with essential oils such as rose, jasmine, neroli and amber, as well as orange blossom. As we know from the Bible the act of anointing kings and priests has always been an important recognition of their calling. So let us keep in mind all who will be helping towards this event on Saturday May 6th 2023, for the thousands of coronation services, including our own, on May 7th and for prayers for the Royal Family; here are words from the Book of Common Prayer read at each Holy Communion service: Almighty God, whose kingdom is everlasting, and power infinite: have mercy upon the whole church; and so rule the heart of thy chosen servant CHARLES, our King and Governor, that he, (knowing whose minister he is), may above all things seek thy honour and glory. Amen Sally Wainman 25th April 2023

For more information, please email Churchwarden [email protected] CELEBRATING PENTECOST WITH BISHOP MIKE On Sunday May 28th we will be celebrating Pentecost with a Family Communion service led by Bishop Mike. Pentecost is the day when the disciples found themselves “clothed with power from above” as Jesus had promised in Luke 24 v. 49. As they met together in the upper room in Jerusalem, they saw what seemed to be tongues of flame which separated and came to rest on each disciple so that they were filled with the Holy Spirit and enabled to go out and witness to all that Jesus had taught them. We believe that God answers all of our prayers, as he loves us dearly and knows just what we need. We have seen God work in so many different ways through the prayer ministry. Please do not hesitate to contact if you feel this can help. If your prayer request is urgent, contact our prayer chain by calling John Wittgreffe on 07857 838678 or email ask.prayer[email protected] specifying "Prayer Chain". If you have an ongoing request for prayer, each Wednesday a prayer request email goes out to ministers and faithful people who will include your request in their prayers on Wednesday, or as soon as possible thereafter. If you would like your prayer included, please use the same contact as above stating "For Wednesday prayers", or both Wednesday Prayers and Prayer Chain if appropriate. All information is considered private to those who take part in the prayers. If, however, you feel something is very sensitive, please mention this and we will make the prayers anonymous before they go out- God still knows who you mean! If you would like private prayer with a minister, you can request this and we will work something out for you. If for any reason John is unavailable, please contact one of our ministry team as in our contacts list.
