CHURCH EMBROIDERY EXHIBITION BY ISABEL CLOVER
Embroidery has filled all of Isabel Clover’s life. Not only in undertak-
ing major projects for senior clergy and many churches all over East
Anglia but also teaching creative and ecclesiastical embroidery at Ips-
wich College and here at Kesgrave for over 50 years.
Her Catholicism has been another major aspect of her life and her caring
for those in the community and the wider world continues to this
day. Like all of us her concern over the tragedy in Ukraine leads her to
wish to do what she can in any small way to support them.

The exhibition will open on Friday evening 6th of May from 6-8pm as
well as Saturday 7th of May from 10am to 6pm. It will continue on
Sunday 8th of May in the afternoon from 2-6pm. During Sunday after-
noon there will be a musical interlude from members of Isabel’s family.
There will also be a Silver Cafe at 4pm followed by a Songs of Praise at
5pm with the Brass Band.

There will be tea, coffee, and cakes served throughout the exhibition's
opening hours.

On display will be a set of vestments made for the retired Bishop of
Lynn, the Rt Revd Tony Foottit as well as two hangings made for Kes-
grave All Saints; two wedding dresses and a wedding waistcoat as well
as items made by pupils of Isabel Clover, past and present.

An uplifting service of simple thoughts on the Ascension of Jesus, inter-
spersed with our favourite hymns.

Last year for Ascension Day we held a special service and we plan
something similar this year. Do join us via Zoom between 7.30pm and
8.30pm
We would love you to join us !

SILVER GROUPS

Over the past year as restrictions have been lifted, we have been able to
resume both the Silver Screen and the Silver Games.

The Silver Screen now meets in the Church Hall on alternative Mon-
days from 2pm to 4pm, we watch films such as Rocket Man and Field
of Dreams, Robin then lead’s a discussion on the film.
Next session is Monday 16th of May at the Church Hall, 2pm-4pm.

Silver Games now meets in the Church on alternative Mondays again
from 2pm to 4pm where many people enjoy playing the old fashioned
and some modern games such as Up-Words, Scrabble, Mexican Train,
Rummikub and Scrabble and other traditional games. Many have also
enjoyed the opportunity to just sit with friends and relax and chat to
each other.
Next sessions are Monday 9th of May and 30th of May at the Church,
2pm-4pm.

We have added to the Silver Group with Silver Crafts, at the moment
the plan is to meet once a month on Wednesday afternoon’s from 2pm
to 4pm in the Church. The idea is that anyone with an interest in either
knitting, crochet, embroidery or any other form of needle craft is wel-
come to come along with their current project or start a new one and
share time together and their skills. There will also be available wool
and pattern’s to swap, and it is open to anyone who wishes to learn a
new skill.
Next session is Wednesday 18th of May at the Church, 2pm-4pm.

At all of these events there will be refreshments of tea, coffee, biscuits
and cake.

For more details contact
Chris or Mike Bryer 01473 611143

MOTHERS’ UNION
Our next Mothers’ Union Meeting will take place at the church on 24th
of May at 2.15 p.m.

Alan and Alison Whittaker will be our speakers in May and they will be
talking about beekeeping. Everyone is welcome.

JOYS OF EVENSONG!
Traditional Evensong is celebrated twice a month here at Kesgrave and
twice a month at Brightwell Church
Parking at Brightwell Church is in the field area next to the church ac-
cessed by taking the first left turning after the church (this is a driveway
going up to a farm) and then, almost immediately, left again diagonally
across the field!
1st May: Kesgrave at 6.30pm
8th May Sung Evensong at Brightwell at 6.30pm
15th May: Kesgrave
22nd May: Brightwell
I find this a very calming, comforting service at the end of the day so
would love to encourage others to try it occasionally
The Third Evening Collect is named the one for "Aid against all Per-
ils":
Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy
defend us from all perils and dangers of this night

For the love of thy only Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen

DO YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW NEED PRAYER?

If at any time you or someone you know are in need of prayer, we have
an active prayer ministry who would love to pray for you. We believe
that God answers all of our prayers, as he loves us dearly and knows
just what we need. We have seen God work in so many different ways
through the prayer ministry. Please do not hesitate to contact if you feel
this can help.

If your prayer request is urgent, contact our prayer chain by call-
ing John Wittgreffe on 07857 838678 or email ask.prayer-
[email protected] specifying "Prayer Chain".

If you have an ongoing request for prayer, each Wednesday a
prayer request email goes out to ministers and faithful people who
will include your request in their prayers on Wednesday, or as soon as
possible thereafter. If you would like your prayer included, please use
the same contact as above stating "For Wednesday prayers", or both
Wednesday Prayers and Prayer Chain if appropriate.

All information is considered private to those who take part in the pray-
ers. If, however, you feel something is very sensitive, please mention
this and we will make the prayers anonymous before they go out- God
still knows who you mean!

If you would like private prayer with a minister, you can request this
and we will work something out for you. If for any reason John is una-
vailable, please contact one of our ministry team as in our contacts list.

"Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circum-
stances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." 1 Thessa-
lonians 5:16-18

CHILDREN’S WORK REVIEW – APRIL 2022

Jennie has continued the role of Children and Family Worker at All
Saints for the past year. This role has included organising and helping
run Messy Church/Little Explorers and Coffee, Chat & Play, leading
and speaking at church services on Zoom and in FIG Family, and writ-
ing articles for the ASK Journal section of the church newsletter.

As we entered the summer term of 2021, we made the decision to con-
tinue to run Messy Church and Coffee, Chat & Play as online only
events, with the longer-term aim of face-to-face sessions resuming in
the new school year at the beginning of September. Knowing what
Covid numbers would be like over the coming weeks and what still
evolving restrictions would be in place at a given time was so difficult
to predict and chatting to attendees the general conclusion was that eve-
ryone felt more confident to continue meeting online for the time being.
We were also still to find new members of staff to help run sessions as
previous staff members had moved on to pastures new last year. Alt-
hough we weren’t reaching nearly as many people as we used to with
face-to-face sessions, we had a consistent number of attendees most
weeks (2-5 children on average plus their carers) who appeared ex-
tremely grateful for the chance to gather together and chat, and take part
in crafts, singing, listening to bible stories and bubble prayers. As in
previous months, at the fortnightly Messy Church we tried to keep ac-
tivities simple enough that huge amounts of craft materials and prepara-
tion weren’t required, but that were also creative and engaging enough
to engage our audience. During this time, we made paper lanterns to
search for Jeremiah down a well, decorated paper plates to create
‘stormy seas’ and stuck cotton wool balls onto lost sheep! At Coffee,
Chat & Play it gave us all chance with a less structured session, for little
ones and their carers to catch up with one another over coffee. It also
provided younger members with an opportunity to ‘show & tell’ any
creations or achievements from the past week. It continued to be a real
privilege to still be able to watch the little ones grow and blossom, and
to continue to develop friendships and support one another during these

unprecedented times. Natalie kindly assisted me in the running of the
groups up until the summer break as a volunteer and Brenda continued
to be extremely dedicated in attending online sessions as part of her vol-
unteer role. I was so grateful for their ideas, support, encouragement
and input, and feel incredibly blessed that they are part of the team.

As restrictions eased over the summer, plans were made to resume face-
to-face sessions at the beginning of September in conjunction with the
return of children to school after the summer holidays. Much considera-
tion was given to how sessions would run in the ‘new normal’ we now
find ourselves in. Ventilation, thorough cleaning routines, hand gel and
mask wearing have featured heavily over the past few months! It was a
fine balance trying to ensure that those who were only just feeling ready
to return to such sessions felt safe, supported and confident, but that oth-
ers who were already more confident would feel comfortable and sup-
ported too. After the first few sessions it became easier as we were able
to chat with attendees and gain an idea of how everyone was finding
sessions and could adjust anything accordingly if possible/needed.
Other main changes made to sessions included using pre-packaged
snacks for the children as this was felt to be more hygienic and also re-
maining in the large hall for the entire session, where ventilation is bet-
ter. Another big change was that we renamed Messy Church and in-
stead we’re now known as Little Explorers. There were some uncer-
tainties regarding using the Messy Church logo on posters etc and so we
decided to rename the group. ‘Little’ obviously refers to our young at-
tendees and ‘Explorers’ to them both exploring the activities and their
environment, but also their relationship with other children and God.
The name appears to have been received well, with one regular attendee
stating that they preferred it!

Numbers do remain down compared to pre-covid times. Many of our
pre-covid regular attendees will now have started school and pre-school,
or carers have returned to work. On average we have between 2 and 7
children plus their carers attending, but looking online and listening to
others, numbers do appear to be down in other groups too. Jennie

advertises sessions on the church website and Facebook pages, in the
ASK notices and posters are put up in the church and the hall. Jennie
also distributed posters to Tesco the library and the 2nd Stop Charity
shop on Kesgrave, and it’s advertised through the paper and online mag-
azine ‘Toddle About’. We have welcomed several new members who
have returned, and the groups continue to have the really friendly at-
mosphere that they always have had.

Over the Summer Nichola joined the team and was able to cover both
Little Explorers and Coffee, Chat & Play sessions. Nichola is friendly,
approachable and has a wonderful rapport with both children and adults
alike.

In the main, most sessions have been able to go ahead. Sometimes
Covid has interfered with the day-to-day running, but I feel we’ve done
well to be open and available to local families as much as we have.
Again, I would like to thank Nichola and Natalie for their support,
ideas, and encouragement, it really is a privilege to be a part of such a
hard-working and dedicated team.

FIG Family sessions have continued to be put on hold for much of the
past year due to covid restrictions and uncertainty as to whether families
would feel confident to return to in-person services. The 10am
Zoom/church service continues to incorporate elements that make it
suitable for the whole family, including a prayer activity such as draw-
ing and colouring or building with Lego, and a worship song that is par-
ticularly suited to our younger members. March 13th was an exciting
day as we held our first FIG Family session in the hall for 2 years! Jen-
nie led the service and Robin spoke whilst involving the 4 families that
attended in a lovely activity to illustrate the message from the bible
story. It was wonderful to be back and see everyone in person and to
hear the musical instruments being played again! We are looking for-
ward to our future gatherings in April and will be aiming to meet twice
a month after that.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved for con-
tinuing to encourage and support me in my role at ASK. Despite the

challenges that Covid has again enforced upon us all this past year, I
have continued to enjoy my Children and Family Worker role im-
mensely, and look forward to the future, working with you all and the
children and families of our local community.

Jennie Fidler – Children & Family Worker

BIBLE STUDIES 2021-2022
Throughout his year Bible study has taken place on Zoom again. This
has worked well for all sorts of reasons. Whatever the restrictions at the
time relating to covid, sessions were still able to take place. Also people
were able to join whether they finished work late, had children to put to
bed, preferred not to go out at night or just liked being in the warm in
the winter.

The range of courses offered has been wide and taught by a variety of
methods. At one end of the spectrum a group member brought a Bible
passage he or she found difficult. The group then read it together and
followed this with a discussion. At the end of the evening Robin gave a
7-minute sermon on what had come out of those discussions. At the
other end of the spectrum the group watched a film over a period of
weeks. Each evening aspects of the film would be considered in relation
to the Bible.

The different teaching and learning styles have allowed everyone taking
part to find his or her “comfort” zone. Whatever the method of presenta-
tion there was always the opportunity for exploration in small group dis-
cussions as well as in the whole group. There was never any pressure on
anyone to say anything during the discussion times. It was perfectly ac-
ceptable to just listen to what others had to say. Likewise it was ac-
cepted that people could join all or just some of the sessions as it suited
them.

We have been so fortunate to have our Ministers and Readers lead us
during these sessions. They have helped us to move our understanding

and learning forward so much. A very big thank you to Robin, Chris-
tine, Gary, Sally and Mike.

'Digging Deeper' is the title of our next set of Bible studies. As in the
Book Club, we will pick a book of the Bible and discuss it further. If
you have a particular book in mind that you would like to discuss with
3-4 other people, please let Robin or Natalie know.

ALL SAINT’S UKRAINE HUB UPDATE – WE WELCOME
FAMILIES!

As I write, our Ukraine Hub in the Fred Upson Hall launches in two
days’ time. Natalie is expecting to welcome 20-30 Ukrainians to our
launch event. I will be welcoming 40 local people to meet in the church;
these comprise of 4 local host families, 10 local families waiting to be
matched to a Ukrainian family, non-church volunteers, English teacher
volunteers, and church leaders from Ipswich, Felixstowe and Wood-
bridge who want to learn more about what we are doing.

I had a fabulous response to my request for volunteers - 24 people from
both the congregation and wider Kesgrave community giving time regu-
larly. John is now working on safeguarding to ensure everyone is fully
safeguarding trained. We have witnessed an outpouring of kindness and
generosity; whatever I request on the Kesgrave Community Facebook
page is forthcoming instantly.

This week All Saints and our communities have:
• Matched two of our 10 potential host families to Ukrainians fami-
lies. These families are currently sheltering in western Ukraine
having escaped from towns around Kyiv
• Provided a 19-year-old from Kyiv with a spring/summer wardrobe
of clothes

• Provided a 4-year-old with a coat, toys prams, teddies and dolls –
her smile was wonderful

• Welcomed several Ukrainians to our hub pre-launch meeting and
subsequently helped one family register with a GP and start the
school application process

• We have made links with ‘Together for Ipswich’ and hope to
match some of our other potential hosts with families through this
link up

• Sourced a good selection of children’s book and toys for use in the
hub

• Secured donations towards hub food/drinks: from congregation
members, East Suffolk council, and a member of our wider com-
munity

• Secured contacts with English teachers who wish to provide
weekly free lessons

Natalie spoke at the Together for Ipswich Ukraine vigil, reading a 6-mi-
nute prayer we wrote to a large audience as they met to pray, console,
be together in support of Ukraine.

All Saints’ initiative is proving very successful; and having now set up,
our work starts in earnest on Saturday when our hub begins opening two
full days a week. Thank you all for your support!

Helen & Natalie

MAY GIVING 2022

We are obviously aware, as a Church, that millions of people are going
to be struggling to survive over the coming months, as nearly every as-
pect of daily life sees sharp price rises.
If you are experiencing financial hardship or mounting debts, please
seek help through organisations like Stepchange https://www.step-
change.org/ or Christians Against Poverty https://capuk.org/

We value all the contributions that are made towards keeping our
church and the other churches in our benefice going; the financial sup-
port we receive goes into maintaining a great variety of work including
pastoral visiting, visits to care homes, all the ‘Silver’ activities (Silver
Film, Silver Games and Silver Crafts), church services across all 3
churches, Bible Studies, Childrens work and FIG services etc; we are
also liaising with Brightwell to provide support during Rev Toby Tate’s
sabbatical.

We want Playford, Little Bealings and Kesgrave to remain centres of
spiritual hope and social activity as the lockdowns certainly showed that
loneliness and isolation greatly undermined physical and mental health

This is a beautiful resurrection hymn set to the traditional French carol
tune: Noel Nouvelet

Now The Green Blade Riseth
Rev Canon John Macleod Campbell Crum (1872-1958) Anglican
priest, author and hymnwriter

Now the green blade riseth from the buried grain,
wheat that in the dark earth many days had lain;
love lives again, that with the dead has been,
Love is come again, like wheat that springeth green.

In the grave they laid him, Love whom men had slain,
thinking that never he would awake again,
laid in the earth like grain that sleeps unseen:

Love is come again, like wheat that springeth green.

Forth he came at Easter, like the risen grain,
he that for three days in the grave had lain;
quick from the dead my risen Lord is seen:
Love is come again, like wheat that springeth green.

When our hearts are wintry, grieving, or in pain,
thy touch can call us back to life again,
fields of our hearts that dead and bare have been:
Love is come again, like wheat that springeth green.

HOLIDAY AT HOME – 2022
We are thrilled to announce that Holiday at Home will be returning in
2022! This year, the events will take place between Monday 6th June
and Sunday 12th June. We warmly invite Kesgrave Residents aged
60+ to take part and enjoy these activities.
More details about individual events, including how to sign up, will be
coming soon.

BENEFICE JUBILEE FLOWER FESTIVAL – UPDATE

Our Benefice will be celebrating the Queen’s 70 years of service over the
Jubilee weekend, Thursday 2nd to Saturday 4th June. Little Bealings
church will be hosting a flower festival, Fynn Valley walks, and much
more. Come enjoy celebrating, rambling, creams teas, light lunches, dress
posh, dress casual, dress as royalty, get your walking boots out, or gen up
for the Right Royal Quiz evening - there’s something for everyone!

TWO Fynn Valley walks with a royalty theme led by Francis and
John. Francis says, ‘To coincide with the festival, our regular walking
group invites you to join us on a ‘royal ramble’ around Bealings and Play-
ford. To add a bit of fun we’ll be revealing various local ‘royal’ connec-
tions and stories we’re uncovered, which we hope will entertain you on
the way round. The walks will be about 4 miles in length and will take
place on Thursday 2nd and Saturday 4th June, departing All Saints Church,
Little Bealings at 10am. Everyone welcome!

The tearoom and flower festival will be open and beautiful each day
10am to 5pm.

We invite children to bring their flower arrangements for the Queen.
Bring them in a jam jar or perhaps buy a block of Oasis from Hobbycraft
and make a beautiful arrangement in an ice cream tub. We will ‘grow’ a
garden fit for Sandringham! A photo will be sent to the Queen on behalf
of the children. We encourage children to come dressed as a princess, a
prince or a beefeater, or wear your usual clothes and ‘Make a Crown’
with us to wear.

Dress like royalty for our Queen’s Garden Party 12-4pm on the Fri-
day. It’s nice to dress up sometimes, so this is your opportunity to get
your posh frocks out, hats and fascinators. Is anyone brave enough to
dress as a royalty lookalike?! Come on let’s have fun. In fact, let’s cele-
brate our Queen in style!

Saturday’s grand finale closes with a 5pm Songs of Praise singing the
Queen’s favourite joyful hymns. At 6pm we conclude with a Family
Fun Evening and Right Royal Quiz.

We’re so looking forward to this weekend! Pop in at any time; or come
for the day, lovely walk, lunch and cream tea among the flowers, Songs
of Praise, and Evening fun!

If you would like to help at the event or donate a flower arrangement or
flowers, please contact Helen Wittgreffe on 07825 004585 or helen.witt-

ALL SAINTS KESGRAVE – QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY PARTY -
FOR ALL THE FAMILY On Saturday 11th June, the Queen’s offi-
cial 96th birthday, ASK will be hosting a Birthday Party to celebrate Her
Majesty. This is a Family event and we are hoping children will come
along with parents, grandparents, carers, and friends to enjoy the fun,
food, and a royal birthday theme.

Party time is between 12pm-3pm. The much-loved Teddy Zip Wire will
be sending much loved teddies from the top of the tower to safe landing
on the grass, of course each teddy will be thoroughly checked over first
by our nurse to ensure he/she is medically fit, and with a full medical
certificate issued before embarking on their adventure. Bring a teddy;
they’ll love their first flight, and then afternoon birthday tea.
There will be activities for children, ‘Make a Crown’, ‘Make a Beefeater’
and enjoy the fun of games such as hoop and bucket.

Cream teas, coffee, cakes and party food will be available at a reasonable
cost, making this an event for the whole family. Why not dress in red,
white and blue (or any other colour if you prefer as our Queen certainly
wears the whole rainbow of colours!).

Again, we are looking for helpers on the day, if you’d like to clear tables,
help with a children’s activity, or welcome at the door, please let Natalie
or Helen know.

ROYAL SILVER CAFÉ AND SONGS OF PRAISE
Sunday 12th June, is the date for All Saints Kesgrave’s Royal Silver Café
and Songs of Praise with brass band. Join us for this joyous event as we
take our much-loved Silver Café and give it a royal flourish fit for a
Queen!

We are so looking forward to June, and celebrating together.
