APRIL 2022

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
This month of April takes us through the last two weeks of Lent to Holy
Week , Easter and beyond into the post-resurrection world of Jesus' final
days on earth.
This month is what Jesus' whole life was leading up to; a time of amaz-
ing highs and deepest lows.

St. John's gospel records many things he said about himself - that he is
the bread of life, the light of the world, the gate to life and the good
shepherd. It took people, including the apostles, a while to understand
the enormity of what he was saying, but when he brought Lazarus back
from the dead he declared 'I am the resurrection and the life. Those who
believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives
and believes in me will never die.' and people began to see Jesus as the
promised messiah.

When he entered Jerusalem on Palm Sunday great crowds greeted him
shouting 'Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the
Lord.'

This moment of triumph is short-lived as he is betrayed by Judas, de-
nied by Peter, tortured, condemned and cruelly crucified.

The word 'hosanna' means 'help' but in days the people were shouting
for their help to die by changing their chant to 'crucify him.'

Jesus' disciples saw the horror of his death on Good Friday; they were in
despair and desolation as he lay in the tomb on Holy Saturday; it must
have seemed a crushing defeat.

But, after they had recovered from the shock and surprise, they were
filled with the joy of his resurrection.

We must never forget what it cost Jesus to rescue us from our sins.

No day can now be ordinary, because Christ is risen. Learning to trust in
the risen Jesus is to know eternal life - life that holds us firm through all
our experience, the highs and the lows, and sustains us to our end and
beyond.

been doing for the last few years, and our church family has enjoyed
taking part. The cost is remaining the same, which is £2.50 per lily. If
you could please give the money to Maggie or Jenny at the time of or-
dering, that would be helpful.

HAPPY 100TH BIRTHDAY TO BETTY!
Mid-March saw All Saints’ Betty celebrate 100 years old. To add to
Betty’s afternoon of celebration, Betty’s family asked Rev Chris Nunn
if the church would like to sing Betty her favourite hymns. Chris organ-
ised nine congregation members and off we went to spread a little birth-
day joy. It was so wonderful to see Betty surrounded by birthday flow-
ers, balloons, family and friends. Alice twinkled on the keyboard and
suddenly the room filled with song; first Betty smiled and by the time
we reached the third hymn, ‘The Lord’s my Shepherd’, Betty was hap-
pily singing along with us. What a sweetie she is.

After ‘Amazing Grace’ a beautiful lemon birthday cake was wheeled in,
lemon iced swans standing on top. We sang Happy Birthday, enjoyed
the lemon curd, held Betty’s hand, told her she was much loved, cooed

at her card from the Queen, and all felt very honoured to have enjoyed
such a happy birthday hour with sweet centenarian Betty.

DO YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW NEED PRAYER?

If at any time you or someone you know are in need of prayer, we have
an active prayer ministry who would love to pray for you. We believe
that God answers all of our prayers, as he loves us dearly and knows
just what we need. We have seen God work in so many different ways
through the prayer ministry. Please do not hesitate to contact if you feel
this can help.

If your prayer request is urgent, contact our prayer chain by call-
ing John Wittgreffe on 07857 838678 or email ask.prayer-
[email protected] specifying "Prayer Chain".

If you have an ongoing request for prayer, each Wednesday a
prayer request email goes out to ministers and faithful people who
will include your request in their prayers on Wednesday, or as soon as
possible thereafter. If you would like your prayer included, please use
the same contact as above stating "For Wednesday prayers", or both
Wednesday Prayers and Prayer Chain if appropriate.

All information is considered private to those who take part in the pray-
ers. If, however, you feel something is very sensitive, please mention
this and we will make the prayers anonymous before they go out- God
still knows who you mean!

If you would like private prayer with a minister, you can request this
and we will work something out for you. If for any reason John is una-
vailable, please contact one of our ministry team as in our contacts list.

"Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circum-
stances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." 1 Thessa-
lonians 5:16-18

THE ASK JOURNAL -

The Return of FIG Family services

Sunday 13th March saw the return of FIG Family services at All Saints
Church Kesgrave. It was wonderful to be able to invite the children and
their families back into the church hall once again, face to face, to learn
more about God, pray with one another and sing and dance with our
musical instruments! And of course, tea, coffee and party ring biscuits
were served too!

The theme of the service was ‘The Importance of Worship’ and in order
to help illustrate his talk vicar Robin gave each family a jar, some small
Lego bricks and one large Lego brick. He explained that the small Lego
bricks represented all the things we like to do in our spare time such as
reading, drawing, crafts and playing football, and the large Lego brick
represented God. If we put all the small bricks into the jar first, then
there was no room left to fit in the God sized brick. However, if you put
the large brick into the jar first, and then surrounded it with the small
‘spare time’ bricks, then everything fitted into the jar! We learnt that if
we put God first in our lives, then everything else will fall into place.

“It felt uplifting to be back in an environment where I could use both
eye contact and a concrete illustration to reflect practically on the im-
portance of church worship” said Robin after the service. Another fam-
ily commented, “It was lovely to be able to worship again with friends.”
The use of instruments appeared popular too. “It was so good to be back
at FIG, the children were so much more engaged in person rather than
on the laptop via Zoom. They loved playing their musical instruments
along with the songs, colouring and joining in with a game at the end.
We can’t wait for next time!”

FIG returns in April on Sunday 10th and 24th, 10am to 10.45am. We
look forward to welcoming you then!

Jennie Fidler, Children & Family Worker

EASTER GIVING 2022

Abridged sermon of St John Chrysostom

Enter all of you into the joy of the Lord, and whether first or last receive
your reward. O rich and poor, one with another, dance for joy! O you
ascetics and you negligent celebrate the day! You that have fasted and
you that have disregarded the fast, rejoice today! For Christ being
raised from the dead, has become the first fruits of them that slept. To
him be glory and dominion through all the ages of ages! Amen!

Christ is risen today, he is risen indeed!

A MESSAGE FROM LITTLE BEALINGS CHURCHYARD
Walking through Little Bealings churchyard I notice beautiful yellow daf-
fodils, their sunny faces bright against a gloriously blue sky. They look
so joyous, so full of newness, hope, and spring. I stop to fully take in the
beauty around me, birds singing so happily, the green lushness beneath

my feet, snowdrops. Indeed, a moment to stop and stare. Smiling, I kneel
to look up the hill, to get the very best view, and there it is, an abundance
of yellow daffodils stretching upwards to meet the bluest of skies. Yellow
and blue.

Yellow and blue; suddenly I’m reminded of the now familiar Ukraine flag
and the joy of the moment melts into sadness. It seems wrong that such
beauty should evoke a sense of sadness in my heart.

I stand a moment, solemnly, and a happy daffodil stares at me. I look
closely into its open face and wonder how it can look so happy, so full of
hope with all that’s going on. A strong thought fills my mind, as if the
daffodil is talking to me, and its flippant message shocks me: ‘Spring is
here, have you forgotten you have a flower festival to organise?’

I had forgotten! How could I have so totally forgotten! For the past fort-
night I’d only thought of Ukraine. Anyway, we couldn’t hold a joyous
event now; act as if nothing was happening. We’d have to cancel,
wouldn’t we? The daffodil seemed to think not, it stood looking at me,
bright, glowing fresh spring joy and hope. I had one question for the daf-
fodil, ‘Where does joy fit in during bad times?’

The answer that came back was this: Joy is always needed. And just as
we are to spread peace, kindness, love, hope, and faith, so as Christians
should we endeavour to spread joy. Joy comes from the Holy Spirit and
is essential to the soul. It feeds us, heals us, restores us, builds up our
defences for the fight ahead. It strengthens our immune system, soothes
the mind, creates a space in which to relax, smile, and simply exhale
slowly. Joy is essential, it is light, and evil must never be allowed to snuff
out light. In the Bible we are told that God fills us with joy, so that by the
power of the Holy Spirit we may abound in hope.

I was glad I met that daffodil, and thanked God for reminding us that
when times are sad and dark, that’s exactly the time to embrace joy and
share it.

CELEBRATE THE PLATINUM JUBILEE WITH US!

It’s a little early to start advertising our June events but we want to grab
that space on your June calendar! We invite you all to our Benefice Plat-
inum Jubilee events:

Little Bealings 3-Day Festival

Little Bealings church will be holding a flower festival and full pro-
gramme of events over the Platinum Jubilee bank holiday. The festival
and tearoom will be open 10am to 5pm daily, Thursday 2nd June to Sat-
urday 4th.

The Flower Festival will be themed ‘Our Glorious Queen’ in celebration
of our Majesty’s long and dedicated 70 years of reign. Flowers will fill
the church, creatively depicting The Coronation, The Colours of the
Queen, Balmoral, and more.

The tearoom will serve strawberries, cream teas, light lunches, freshly
brewed coffee, cakes, and no doubt a celebratory tipple. We want a Buck-
ingham Palace Garden party feel to the event!

Francis and John will be in their walking boots leading rambles through
the butterfly-filled Fynn valley. Why not join them at 10am on the Thurs-
day or Saturday. After a 4-mile walk stretching your muscles and delight-
ing in birdsong and wild flowers, you’ll fully enjoy that cream tea.

Fridays are for fun and we are going for a full injection of elegant frivol-
ity. Let’s dress up and toast her Majesty. 12pm is time for those Ascot
hats and Windsor fascinators. Let’s be bold, bright and beautiful; just like
our Queen. Join us for Pimms amongst the peonies.

Children, make us smile! Show us your inner prince or princess, or walk
tall as a Beefeater!

Saturday at 5pm, join us to sing the Queen’s favourite hymns to a brass
quartet, surrounded by flowers. Gary is particularly looking forward to a
rousing ‘Praise, My Soul, The King of Heaven’ and ‘I Vow To Thee My
Country’.

At 6pm, churchwardens Corinne and Tony will round-up our event with
a family-friendly evening of hearty food, celebration drinks, and a light-
hearted ‘Right Royal Quiz’.

If you would like to contribute flowers or help during the event please
contact [email protected]

ALL SAINTS KESGRAVE – QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY PARTY -
FOR ALL THE FAMILY On Saturday 11th June, the Queen’s offi-
cial 96th birthday, ASK will be hosting a Birthday Party to celebrate Her
Majesty. This is a Family event and we are hoping children will come
along with parents, grandparents, carers, and friends to enjoy the fun,
food, and a royal birthday theme.

Party time is between 12pm-3pm. The much loved Teddy Zip Wire will
be sending much loved teddies from the top of the tower to safe landing
on the grass, of course each teddy will be thoroughly checked over first
by our nurse to ensure he/she is medically fit, and with a full medical
certificate issued before embarking on their adventure. Bring a teddy;
they’ll love their first flight, and then afternoon birthday tea.
There will be activities for children, ‘Make a Crown’, ‘Make a Beefeater’
and enjoy the fun of games such as hoop and bucket.

Cream teas, coffee, cakes and party food will be available at a reasonable
cost, making this an event for the whole family. Why not dress in red,
white and blue (or any other colour if you prefer as our Queen certainly
wears the whole rainbow of colours!).
Again, we are looking for helpers on the day, if you’d like to clear tables,
help with a children’s activity, or welcome at the door, please let Natalie
or Helen know.

ROYAL SILVER CAFÉ AND SONGS OF PRAISE
Sunday 12th June, is the date for All Saints Kesgrave’s Royal Silver Café
and Songs of Praise with brass band. Join us for this joyous event as we

take our much loved Silver Café and give it a royal flourish fit for a
Queen!

We are so looking forward to June, and celebrating together.
