Newsletter Issue 110 - 28.04.24 May 2024

ALL SAINTS KESGRAVE NEWSLETTER ISSUE NO 110 – 28.04.24 May 2024 THOUGHT FOR THE DAY With the last of the Easter eggs gone and Summer just around the corner, many of us will be trying to shed a few pounds before donning our swimwear and heading for the beach. What better way to do this than with walking - getting out in the fresh air, alone, in company or with a dog.

This month the trees are at their greenest, the flowers colourful and the skies intense. So, when the news is worrying, work challenging and the world creaking, a walk can be a positive and relaxing means of exercise. May is a great time for listening to birdsong and the ducks have ducklings on the Deben. It’s a perfect time to meditate on the blessings of living in Suffolk where we can enjoy the wonders of nature. The Bible teaches us the importance of keeping our spirits up or 'restoring our souls'. St Paul gave thanks for three friends who visited him. This refreshed Paul's spirit.(1Cor 16:18) Jesus said 'Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest.' God himself, through creation, can refresh our spirits. Psalm 23 says 'He leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. If you want to feel even better after a long walk in the countryside why not do as friends of mine do and take along a carrier bag to collect any litter that spoils the view. Your Church helped

us bless and bring joy to our amazing care experienced children and young people who we met with at our Easter Events. Our Easter Activities catered for all ages of children. They included Teen’s events, an indoor play town, gymnastics, quasar, soft play, a shuffle café, football, and roller skating to name just a few. Great fun was had by all. Thank you, together we made a difference. We’d love to have your continued support this year. This is how you can get involved. We are reaching out to Suffolk churches like yours to join us in sharing a video that highlights our decade of impactful work. We would be honoured to have your church participate in this celebration by sharing our video with your congregation. If your church would like to take part, please click on the QR code below or this link:https://forms.office.com/e/DLHuaeBV6b to complete the form and we will get back to you. Thank you! Looking ahead, we are excited to work closer with churches like yours. The need remains urgent and our work vital because every fifteen minutes in the UK, a child is taken into care. We look forward to partnering with you as every Church can play their part in bringing transformation to the lives of vulnerable children in our county. We would love you to pray with us this Spring please see our prayer points attached and at the end of the email. Every Blessing, Elaine Ingram

THE OAK TREE The oak tree in the church hall car park has been affected by honey fungus and became at risk of collapse. To reduce this risk work has been carried out to reduce the lower branches. More of the tree remains in place than was first anticipated but sadly, it was discovered that the tree is being attacked by carpenter ants which has resulted in some disintegration from the inside. The tree surgeon has recommended that we monitor the tree for a year to see how it is progressing but there is some chance that it may need to be further reduced or removed altogether. UKRAINIAN “PYSANKA” As the Easter holiday fades into sweet memories, I find myself reflecting on the simple joys and cherished traditions that made this season truly special. This year, amidst the hustle and bustle of everyday life, I rediscovered a passion from my childhood: the art of decorating Pysanka eggs.

Pysanka, as these decorated eggs are called, hold a special place in Ukrainian culture. The word itself comes from the Ukrainian verb "pysaty," meaning "to write," highlights the unique process of using beeswax to create intricate designs on eggshells. This ancient tradition dates back to pagan times and has evolved into a symbol of rebirth and renewal, particularly during the Easter season. The process of decorating Pysanky is not just an art form but a spiritual journey. It is also a form of prayer and therapy for me too. Each symbol and colour holds deep meaning, from the St. Andrew's cross representing Ukraine's Patron Saint and Christianity to the vibrant colours of spring signifying renewal and growth. As my family and I decorated our eggs, we incorporated symbols that held personal significance, reflecting our love for both Ukrainian and British culture. There is a simple joy in creating something with your own hands. As we carefully dipped our eggs into dyes and watched the designs emerge, we felt a sense of pride and connection to our heritage. Just before Easter, we also hosted the Kesgrave&Woodbridge Ukraine Hub event, where we held a "Pysanka" session. As we shared this tradition with our children, we witnessed the power of creativity to bring families together and keep traditions alive. There are some photos of our event from the Ukraine Hub and pysankas created by my family. These will be donated on behalf of the Ukrainian community to the Ipswich Museum and The Hold Archives. But I’m hoping to keep finding time to create some more not only at Easter time; we decorate Pysankas in Ukraine all year round.

TRINITY SUNDAY - MAY 26TH - GIFT DAY All Saints Kesgrave has lasted for eight centuries only because of the generosity, commitment and faith of successive generations. Countless skills go into running and maintaining a parish church: some visible, but most of them much less noticeable and often taken for granted! Think of the planning and preparation that must have gone into the 1980 extension! Did the architect have a few sleepless nights about his proposal to put a massive hole into the south-facing side of the original church? Do we know how many hours Isabel Clover spent on the tapestries that hang behind the altar (purple for Lent and Advent, and a more neutral background for the rest of the year?) Something like 95% of the effort is voluntary (and incalculable in financial terms), but sufficient funds are still needed to pay bills, water rates, energy costs, insurance, hire of the photocopier, IT and staff costs. Over the last year or so all of these have tended to go up in line with what we have all experienced when managing our own households. In the weeks leading up to the Gift Day on May 26th and the weeks afterwards to the end of June, please pray about the Financial future of our church, and its halls. We need to keep them in good repair, observe modern health and safety standards, and make them accessible and welcoming to those with disabilities (within the restrictions that come from managing a Grade II * Listed Building). We also need to pay the

Parish Share to our Diocese (St Edmundsbury and Ipswich) although we may be querying the full amount requested. Please give thanks for "legacy" giving and foresight: for the Kesgrave Parish Trust and for the Kesgrave Church of England Charity which manages the Fred Upson Hall (formerly British Legion) and for all those who remember the Church in their wills or who donate in Remembrance. Give thanks for those who have helped us with Grants, particularly Spark (our local charity in Kesgrave), the Ropes Trust, Suffolk Historic Churches Trust, Alfred Williams Trust and the Jill Ganzoni Trust. And thank you to everyone who gives at the present time! I am well aware of the strain on many people's finances but please pray how your earthly 'talents' - financial or otherwise might be used. We have kept all methods of Giving, so it is possible to 'mix and match', giving regularly through the Parish Giving Scheme for instance and then 'topping up' occasionally. Below is Rublev's Icon of the "Feast of Abraham" showing God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit enjoying the meal that Abraham has prepared for them under the great trees of Mamre (Genesis 18). Also included is the photo of our Bell Tower. For all queries please contact Sally Wainman Local Giving Advisor 07807 984589
