THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
When I was growing up, one of the programmes on the television was
Monty Python’s Flying Circus. I wonder how many of you can
remember the catch phrase, (brownie points only I am afraid as I am
unable to deliver any prizes). It was “And now for something
completely different”. Well, Easter certainly is completely different.

He is Risen! The Son of God who was born in a manger, who
came to earth, identified with us, lived amongst us. So often we hear in
work places “why don’t those in ivory towers come down and see what
it’s like on the coal face”. God not only did this, but gave His Son to be
our redeemer and our saviour. He did it for us, because of us, and yes,
despite us.

This Easter, we rejoice in the good news that Easter brings.
Through the cross and the resurrection, we are transformed people
because of the message of Easter; no longer do we live in darkness, but
we have everlasting light and hope. That’s the joy the message of
Easter brings, for you, for me and for every person in this community.

A few years ago, I was able to go underground in a redundant
mine, with only the lamps on our heads, we walked through tunnels
where men had for centuries cut coal, in what was dangerous and dark
conditions. We were all then asked to turn the lights off and work our
way back to where we came from. It didn’t take long before people
were feeling anxious, confused and no sense of direction. Easter gives
us that light on our direction.

But what if all of this is not true? Did Jesus really die? The
Romans were professional executioners, no person was taken down
unless they were certain they were dead. Well, what if His Disciples
resuscitated him? This was Easter Day, its resurrection not
resuscitation. It might have been a ghost, ghosts do many things, sit and
eat fish with the Disciples on the seashore they do not! The facts are
this, that Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, yes, I said living, walked
this earth, died and rose again on Easter Sunday. Fact not fiction. He
came for you, for me, for the many, not a few. In a world that promotes
so much uncertainty for our future, and life sometimes feels like living
on the edge, how reassuring and refreshing that God’s love is for all, no
matter what our past.

If I screwed up a £20 note and threw it on the floor, stamped on it
lots of times, it would still be a £20 note. It might be creased, it might
be torn, but it is still a £20 note. We too sometimes feel as if we are a
bit crumpled, insecure, not good enough and feel we could do better, in
God’s eyes, you are still you, His child whom He created and a child
whom He still loves.

Easter really is the good news for us, being set free from our past,
and giving us hope for the future. You know, when somebody wins the
lottery and shouts about it, it is only a matter of hours, given social

media, that people get to hear about it, today as a Church, the risen
Christ is our hope for this life and in the one to come. Now that really is
good news and worth shouting about.

So, let the world proclaim He is Risen! He is Risen indeed!
Alleluia.

Easter Blessings to you all.

Gary

communal aspect of the word Communion and how that remained
relevant even in lockdown.
We belong together and the importance of fellowship together is
eagerly desired.
We should not give up the habit of meeting together!
“ Though we are many we are one body, because we all share in one
bread”.
To register your interest please respond to us by
email [email protected] or text 07443924285.

Easter story scavenger hunt and a worship song too. We look forward
to seeing you and your creations!
To make the ‘natural’ garden you will need:

GOODNESS ME! THANK YOU!!
What an amazing month this has been. A month ago I sat here, £6,160
in our Lighting Fund, wondering, ‘How are we going to raise £68,000 in

just 5 months to re-wire and install new lighting in the church before
autumn sets in?’ It seemed an impossible task. (For those of you reading
this who aren’t able to join us on Zoom, there’s a surprise coming up!)

We are told in Philippians 4:6, ‘Do not be anxious about anything, but
in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present
your requests to God.’ So we prayed. We prayed at Ministry Meeting,
at Alpha, at our prayer group, and I prayed alone.

After praying alone, I said ‘Amen’ and something undeniable happened.
God replied. As I sat on my sofa, I was filled with a deep sense of peace
and the strong knowledge that, ‘All will be ok, the money is coming.’

The next day, the ‘Rally Cry’ article was published in our Newsletter. I
also spoke at the 10am Sunday service.

Exactly 24hrs later I received a phone call; a large legacy had been
received and could be used towards keeping the church running. It could
be used for lighting. This was completely out of the blue and I walked
around with a massive grin for three days! The money was wonderful, it
made all the difference when applying for grants; but what made me
grin just as much was God. John and I kept looking at each other saying,
‘wow, just 24hrs later’. Praise be to God. It’s such a weight off our
minds.

Thank you also to the couple who left the legacy, they will be named
and thanked properly later.

And then, ALL OF YOU! Donations started coming in: donation button,
cheques, BACs, and letters of support. You most definitely answered
the rally cry! I can’t thank you enough; each of you, for every donation.
All Saints can’t thank you enough.

It’s been humbling to witness your response and we’ve felt such joy to
see what All Saints means to you all. Your kind generosity, wonderful
words of support, and simply responding to our urgent call; just
beautiful to witness. ALL Saints will shine this winter.

So, what’s the total? A month ago, £6,160………today (23rd March),
when all cheques are paid in our Lighting Fund total stands at
£45,200. How awesome. How amazing. And 30 letters of support. We
will do everything we can to make All Saints a warm and bright church
this autumn.
There is still £23,000 to raise, but I’ve no doubt we can achieve this.
With 66% raised we hope and expect grant bodies will take us most
seriously.
We are aiming for installation in Aug/Sept. The work should take
approximately six weeks and during that time the plan is to use the
church hall for services. When the work is finished: Songs of Praise,
cream tea, apple crumble, service of thanksgiving, evensong! And our
beautiful stained glass window lit in the evenings for the community to
see and enjoy.
We start applying to grant bodies this week and encourage anyone who
has any fundraising ideas to either let me know, or simply go ahead and
amaze us further!
Many, many, many thanks everyone; you are marvellous,

ROBIN’S FUNDRAISING LENT MARATHON
Robin is never thwarted, especially with great friends around! Mid-
February, Robin declared he would March a Marathon over Lent in a
fundraising drive. Unfortunately, Robin’s efforts were temporarily de-
railed by his stroke, but Robin didn’t want to give up. He especially
wanted to show his gratitude for the love shown to him this past week
by raising money for good causes. And in stepped Carl Lawrence to
help out. Now, between them, All Saints’ Marathon continues! Please
support this wonderful pair in their fundraising efforts.

Robin now intends to safely walk half a marathon over the remaining
days of Lent, and in the process gain the exercise recommended for his
recovery. Meanwhile, Carl will march his half marathon at a brisk 4-
5mph.

The funds from the marathon will be split equally between The
Bishop's Lent Appeal for Kagera, Tanzania, and All Saints Lighting
Appeal.

The diocese is linked with Kagera and funds will provide help for key
workers such as farmers, doctors and priests. Our donations will
support:

• building rainwater tanks
• employing specialist doctors for Murgwanza Hospital
• supplying motorbikes for priests who travel long distances in

parishes

All Saints Lighting Fund aims to raise £68,000 by mid-August to re-
wire the entire church and install new lighting. This work is now urgent.

To support Robin and Carl please donate in all the usual ways: via
BACS, the donate button on our website www.askesgrave.org ,
cheques/cash to Helen Wittgreffe, Sally Wainman or Emma Burrows,
payable to ‘Kesgrave PCC’., and importantly, please let Emma know
by email that your donation should be allocated to the Lent Appeal.

WEEKLY PRAYER EMAIL - one year on!
For the last year, since the first restrictions, we have been praying
together each Wednesday for people and topics that are on our hearts.
Initially this replaced our Wednesday morning Prayer service in church
during lock-downs and restrictions, and also supplemented the "prayer
book" in church, however it has now become wider. In praise to God
over this time we have seen so much answered prayer, with around 35
people joining in the weekly prayers.

For each topic raised, we know there is so much prayer from our group,
and we can be sure that God knows what is best for each person or item
he and will listen and answer. The more people that pray together, the
better still, as God has much purpose in us praying together. So if you
have a prayer you would like to submit, or if you would like to receive
the weekly prayers, please don't hold back and instead please contact
us.

2 Corinthians 1:11 "You also must help us by prayer, so that many will
give thanks on our behalf for the blessing granted us through the
prayers of many."

Each week prayer requests and updates are sent in and gathered
together. Examples would be for people who are sick or going through a
difficult time, or for a situation that needs prayer. Please be sure that
you have permission for us to pray for someone, who may also be made
anonymous if preferred, and of course avoid including anything that is
confidential- God knows the details anyway.

On Wednesday morning I send out the combined list of prayers, aiming
to send these by 8:00am.. These also include some weekly prayers and
reflections contributed by Sybil Holbrook or Mary Bendell. For anyone
raised to us for prayer, we continue to pray for that person each week
until the originator asks us to stop, along with any updates from the
originator. In this way we are persistent in prayer and can provide much
prayer support through difficult times.

This is different to the prayer chain, which is for more urgent requests
that can't wait till next Wednesday (please see next item).

If you would like to receive the weekly prayers email, or if you would
like to submit a prayer request for the weekly prayers, please contact
[email protected] or 07857 838678.

"Pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks, for this is the will of
God in Christ Jesus concerning you". 1 Thessalonians 5:17

PRAYER CHAIN

If at any time you have an urgent need for prayer, please consider
contacting the prayer chain. A team of our ministers and faithful people
will provide prayer support quickly, usually the same day or

sooner. Prayers are confidential to the prayer chain although if required
people can be made anonymous.

If preferred, you can discuss your prayer with Sybil or John first, who
can write the prayer for you. Prayer chain requests are not included in
the weekly prayers email unless it is requested- so please ask if you
wish for your prayer to be included in the weekly prayers.

To send in a request to the prayer chain, contact either Sybil Holbrook
or John Wittgreffe as below or email [email protected]

IT’S SPRING! HAPPY EASTER ALL
Spring is here! It arrived on the vernal equinox, 20th March, and I’m
sure everyone breathed together one enormous, national sigh of utter
relief. And goodness, didn’t that sigh come from deep within our hearts.
But it’s here, it’s really here. And its glorious.

The Fynn Valley and Kesgrave are beautiful today; they’re always
beautiful but today they are wearing their early spring gown. How
quickly the transformation from winter to spring happens. First a faint
haze of green across the earthy brown fields, accompanied by spring
birdsong, and before you know it the blackthorn is making a tunnel of
white blossom and decorating the perimeter of every field. Not to be left
behind the magnolia bursts forth, first white star-shaped blooms, rapidly
followed by the queen of the blooms, big waxy pink-purple cups of
extravagance.

Then the race is on, everything busting into newness of life: buds,

blossom, lambs, early bees, butterflies, yellow wild celandine carpeting
the banks, crocus and daffodils urging us eager gardeners on, ‘go on,

you know you need to buy more roses, seed potatoes, a good bit of
manure for the beds!’

On the 29th March, the government said, ‘you can meet a friend again’.
Brenda, Colin, John and I are meeting up for tea and cake in our garden
– I feel really excited! Just like the animals, we too can leave our
‘barns’, our hibernation hole, our nest, and we can finally drink tea
together in the sunshine. We can chat, our faces turned to the warming
sun; we can feel it’s comforting warmth as it melts the memory of
winter, melts our aches, and firmly plants instead an excitement for blue
skies and daisies.

Natalie asked me to write something joyous, uplifting, ‘full of
goodness’ – I cannot think past God’s glorious gift of spring, God’s
glorious gifts of friends and family, and God’s wonderful newness that
we can see bursting forth around us. So let’s just take this opportunity
together to say ‘Thank you merciful God for beautiful Spring’.

THE ASK JOURNAL
A few years ago, for my birthday, I had a bird box with a built-in
camera. Having watched and loved the BBC’s Springwatch programme
year-on-year, I too longed to be able to witness the incredible sight of
birds nesting in my own garden! The first year we put it up there wasn’t

any obvious interest, but since then we have had the privilege of
watching a number of Great Tit and Blue Tit pairs make their home in
our box at Springtime! It truly is amazing to watch them gather the
materials for the nest, see the eggs hatch, watch them flying backwards
and forwards to gather food for their hungry brood, and finally, for the
youngsters to fledge.

This year, I hadn’t really been aware of any activity near the box, until
this morning when I went to empty the bins. A Blue Tit beak and head
popped out of the hole on the front of the box, looked at me to assess
the safety of the situation, and then flew off. I like to think that she
recognised me and trusted me – after all I am the nice lady that puts out
the seed and sunflower hearts on the bird table every day! I hurried
inside to switch on the mini screen we have connected to the camera,
and I could hear a frantic tapping. Apparently, the birds mark their
territory and let other birds know that the box is taken, by tapping their
beak on the front of the box. Then she flew in, picked up a beak full of
old nesting material, and flew back out with it again. This busyness
continued for a good hour or two over the course of the morning. If only
our household was as keen on Spring cleaning and tidying as this
particular bird!

I found witnessing this whole nesting ritual extremely reassuring and
comforting during these strange times we still find ourselves living in.
For a whole year, so many elements of our lives have been
unpredictable and inconsistent compared to ‘the norm’. The days have
somehow managed to be simultaneously monotonous and have dragged,
and yet have also sped by at the rate of knots and are full of change, as
we’ve had to adapt and adopt new ways of doing things! The sight of
the Blue Tit flying in and out, doing what she always does at this time
of year, filled me with hope - hope because Spring is well and truly here
(although a few warmer days would be nice!) and because despite the
events of the past year, the world keeps on turning steadily, just as it

always has done, with the coming and going of the seasons. In Genesis
8:22 we read “As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold
and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease.” And in
Daniel 2:21 “He changes times and seasons….” Throughout the
lockdowns and with all the restrictions we’ve faced, this consistency in
the changing of the seasons has served to highlight to me just how
consistent and steadfast God is. He ultimately is in charge. How
incredibly reassuring that is in the coming days and weeks!

In next month’s notices, I hope to be able to update you of the progress
of our Blue Tit family!

During one of the most difficult years that we have ever experienced we
are deeply grateful to those who continue to support the work here,
enjoy the Zoom services and contribute in so many ways. We are
especially grateful that April 2nd Good Friday and April 4th Easter
Sunday will see us back in church as well as online!

IN THE LAST DAYS OF THE WORLD
In the last days of the world

Christ’s banner stands unfurled
He is calling to his Church “Receive me!”

In the Lord’s appointed hour
He will come in truth and power
May we never lose our faith in Jesus ( x 2)

When you’re faced with right and wrong
Seek the Lord of hope and song

He has sent his Spirit out to guide us
It is written by his hand

We shall see the Holy Land
May we never lose our faith in Jesus ( x 2)

In a world that’s full of fear
His voice is quiet and clear
And we know that he is there beside us

It is radiant to our sight
Heaven’s shining golden light
May we never lose our faith in Jesus ( x 2 )
