Newsletter issue No 104 =24.09.23 October 2023

Newsletter issue No - 24.09.23 October 2023

ALL SAINTS KESGRAVE NEWSLETTER ISSUE NO 104 – 24.09.23 October 2023 THOUGHT FOR THE DAY Mark 4 v. 26 - 29 Jesus also said, “This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the ground. 27Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. 28 All by itself the soil produces grain—first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head. 29 As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come.”

Harvest time is the all-important culmination of all the labour that has gone before it; no matter how hard the farmer has worked in the months previously, the "gathering in" is the moment the precious food supplies are secured before winter sets in. Harvest represents the partnership between God and Man: beneath and above the soil the seed grows and changes through God's creative energy, as Mark so vividly illustrates for us: 'Night and day ..... the seed sprouts and grows, though the man does not know how!' The farmer both watches over and participates in God's work, praying for rain and sunshine in season. Harvest was a time for sharing, as we can see from the many Old Testament passages about caring for those who have no land of their own: In Leviticus 19, Moses is commanded to tell the Israelites "9 “‘When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest..... leave the gleanings for the poor and the foreigner" The Book of Ruth, for instance, is a wonderful "harvest" book, showing us how Ruth and Naomi were saved by Boaz' generosity. God's commands also covered the offering of the "first fruits" to the priests, so that no matter how rich or powerful a landowner was he would be reminded of God's part in the harvest! "We plough the fields and scatter the good seed on the land, but it is fed and watered by God's almighty hand", originally a German hymn written in 1782 by Matthias Claudius : "Wir Pflugen und Wir Streuen"! The most important land however is spoken of in the Lord's Prayer: Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven: The earth of our souls is the Promised Land that we journey towards and often seeds fall carelessly on stony ground; but God's promise is that when we seek him some of his Words will find good earth, will be fruitful and will be a blessing and a harvest to ourselves and others. Amen Sally Wainman 19th September 2023

For more details contact Chris or Mike Bryer 01473 611143 ALPHA COURSE STARTS 5TH OCTOBER – STAY CURIOUS! Stay Curious is the current strapline for Alpha and at first I thought it rather odd, but it’s stuck in my brain, so perhaps it works. After all, faith is a journey and we should remain curious as we explore and enjoy a journey. I challenge you to Stay Curious this autumn/early winter, and join us to learn more about Alpha and why it is packing city churches across the nation and indeed the world. The current Alpha Film Series was filmed

in 2016 and is designed to take the audience on an epic journey exploring the basics of Christian faith. It features inspiring stories and interviews from all around the world, from leading DNA scientists, hardened criminals, highly successful entrepreneurs who had everything money could buy and yet still felt empty and that there had to be more to life, from Queens Counsel lawyers, adventurer Bear Grylls, and quotes from Freddie Mercury and other music legends. It makes us think. Alpha is aimed at those sitting on the fence regarding faith, and those who don’t believe, however those who took the course with me, longstanding members of this congregation, found it changed them. It inspired us, gave us an absolute desire to be disciples, to serve, to bring others to faith. So whether you are new to faith, have unanswered questions, want to know more, are longstanding Christians, or are just curious, we welcome you to join us for our third Alpha course. The course will be run by Elders Helen Wittgreffe and Carolyn Lemay on Thursday evenings from 5th October at Little Bealings Church, we will share coffee, cake, a laugh, stories, enjoy these 25-minute films and then discuss them in a positive and inspiring way. Coffee will be served from 7.15pm, film starts at 7.30pm, finish 9pm. It is envisaged the course will run for 11-12 weeks. To book a place, please contact Helen Wittgreffe on [email protected] or 07825 004585, or speak to Carolyn Lemay at ASK. FINANCE AND PARISH SHARE 2023 We have three main financial responsibilities as a church: 1) To keep the church going in all its myriad ways! • Have a look at the website What's On page to see all that we offer in the way of services, events; • Add in the less visible part of our work: pastoral visiting, home communions, services in care homes • Add in baptisms, weddings, funerals • Add in the huge amount of voluntary effort that sustains all this 2) To keep the church in good repair (Fabric) The permanent parts of the church: wood, stone, bricks etc are termed the Fabric of the church; continual maintenance is necessary to provide a safe, welcoming building that meets the modern standards of health and safety 3) Parish Share paid to the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich each year The Parish Share is our share of the total Diocesan costs spread across 400 + parishes; it covers the cost of stipendiary Vicars, the cost of ongoing ministerial training and study days, the cost of most of the legal advice and back-up we receive, and the work of the DAC (Diocesan Advisory Committee) which advises on fabric, Faculties, churchyards etc This year it is £52,584 which as you can see is a huge challenge; at the time of writing this (20th September 2023) the predicted shortfall is about £11,500 by December 31st 2023 If you would like to contribute specifically to the Share please let Emma Burrows or myself know so that your donation is ringfenced for that purpose THANK YOU to each and everyone who make all three parts possible: you are part of centuries of generosity! FYNN VALLEY WALKS. WALK WITH OTHERS! EVERY WEDNESDAY FROM LITTLE BEALINGS CHURCH: I attended the Little Bealings PCC meeting yesterday and Helen Wittgreffe reports that the Fynn Valley walkers group is going from strength to strength, with up to 40 people taking part! Every Wednesday morning at Little Bealings there is an (optional!) short service of Morning Prayer at 10.00am, followed by the walkers setting off at 10.30am for a walk of about 3-4 miles. No need to book just turn up, making sure you have clothing and footwear appropriate to the weather conditions. After the walk there is the option to enjoy light refreshments in the lovely cafe there. See main website for further details: https://www.askesgrave.org/whatson.htm DO YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW NEED PRAYER? If at any time you or someone you know are in need of prayer, we have an active prayer ministry who would love to pray for you. We believe that God answers all of our prayers, as he loves us dearly and knows just what we need. We have seen God work in so many different ways through the prayer ministry. Please do not hesitate to contact if you feel this can help. If your prayer request is urgent, contact our prayer chain by calling John Wittgreffe on 07857 838678 or email [email protected] specifying "Prayer Chain". If you have an ongoing request for prayer, each Wednesday a prayer request email goes out to ministers and faithful people who will include your request in their prayers on Wednesday, or as soon as possible thereafter. If you would like your prayer included, please use the same contact as above stating "For Wednesday prayers", or both Wednesday Prayers and Prayer Chain if appropriate.

All information is considered private to those who take part in the prayers. If, however, you feel something is very sensitive, please mention this and we will make the prayers anonymous before they go out- God still knows who you mean! If you would like a private prayer with a minister, you can request this and we will work something out for you. If for any reason John is unavailable, please contact one of our ministry team as in our contacts list. "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 John Wittgreffe, Elder OUR NEW INCUMBENT The Right Revd Martin Seeley, the Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich, is delighted to announce that The Revd Sarah Ellen Quantrill has been appointed as Vicar of Kesgrave with Little Bealings and Playford. Sarah is currently Rector of Carlton Colville Benefice in the Norwich Diocese. The date for Sarah's Institution and Induction Service has now been confirmed as November 20th; more details in due course. Many thanks to all involved in the appointment process. Please pray for Sarah and her husband Mike as they prepare for their move. This appointment is subject to the completion of legal formalities. CHURCH PREPARATION FOR NEW INCUMBENT In anticipation of the arrival of our new incumbent, Sarah, it's really important that we clean up the church to give her the warmest welcome possible! We are organising a work party scheduled for Saturday, November 4th, commencing at 9:30am. We'd be really grateful if you could lend a hand if you are able to.

For further information or inquiries, please do not hesitate to reach out to any of our ministers. UKRAINE AID CONTINUES I have recently returned from my ninth and tenth trips in to Ukraine, the ninth part funded by Kesgrave and Little Bealings churches, driving a Ukrainian woman, her daughter, their cat and belongings home from Ipswich to Dnipro, in the family car, following the passing of the father on Christmas day `22. They wanted and needed to be with family at this difficult time, despite the risks, all too evident in the missile attack on Dnipro on 28th July, when 2 large explosions made us jump and run to the bathroom, where the 9 year old daughter stood crying between her mother and uncle. I now know the target was a large residential block with children amongst the casualties, as reported in world press. This adds to my determination to work with many others, doing what we can to ease suffering and support Ukrainians at this time. I published my “ GoFundMe” fundraising details in the August edition. The mission described is part completed, with a little modification, via my tenth trip in August. I purchased and delivered one car to mechanics in Mykolaiv who converted it to an “ off road” casualty recovery vehicle and then I drove it to a battalion in Kherson, as pictured. £2500 is being used to purchase a car carrying trailer in Ukraine, rather than in the UK, due to the greater future ease of using a Ukraine registered trailer in Ukraine and Poland where required. A further vehicle, a “pick up”, kindly donated by an individual, Peter Elliston, is currently having welding repairs and will be used also to recover wounded soldiers and to help mobility against a far larger army. I aim to deliver this vehicle in October. For my latest trip, I had removed all rear seating in the vehicle ( thank you ken Wilding!), which allowed for a large donated supplies load ( 4 generators, 3x oxygen concentrators, a defibrillator, medical supplies,

water pumps, some specialist food supplies and other goods for the displaced persons shelter in Lviv - hygiene, infant care, toiletries items and gifts for children from Heath Primary school in Kesgrave). I have received such generous financial and supplies donations to date from Morrisons Hadeligh, Kesgrave and Bealings churches, friends, local people and those further afield, both British and Ukrainian, (only about half are reflected in the GoFundMe), such that I have been able to undertake the above and have money to pay for repairs to the gifted car. Money continues to be needed of course, to cover delivery costs, any specific supplies requested, and ongoing aid trips. So, if you would like to support, please see the QR code below and/or contact me direct to discuss etc. The QR code facilitates donations direct to the registered charity, “ British Ukrainian Aid”, who then administer the funds raised for the projects I lead. The Kyiv military hospital, I have delivered to several times, have asked if I might be able to source a 10-12 KW single phase diesel generator, in anticipation of another winter where power supply infrastructure is targeted. Such generators new cost between 5-7K so I am hoping there may be a second hand one available or the incredible generosity of people is able to rise to this challenge also. A continuing request is also for car mechanics tools, to help battalions maintain and repair vehicles, Between these trips, there is much work around fund raising, sourcing/collecting supplies etc, and Mediquip Ipswich provided me with a third large load of valuable medical aids I was able again to take to the Ukrainian warehouse in London for onward delivery to hospitals and centres in Ukraine who forward photos of delivery and use. My huge thanks again to John Grose Ipswich for yet another free loan of a Luton for this purpose!

There is not space to express my heartfelt individual thanks to so many people again, for all your gifts and words of encouragement too, that makes these trips and the support possible. I would emphasise again how much Ukrainians express that such initiatives, individual, small and larger, are such a vital encouragement to them and, together, add huge value to the international government aid delivered, and provide for very real needs, often with the precision and speed that is more difficult to achieve through large organisations. THANK YOU!! PS. If any local group would appreciate opportunity to hear detail of this work, with a view to assisting in some way, please contact to discuss. David Jacobs 07500531901
