ISSUE NO 81 – 30.05.21
JUNE 2021

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Our time with you at All Saints Kesgrave is coming to an end and I will
be starting my curacy at St Matthews Ipswich at the beginning of July.
While Julia and I have been with you, many people have asked what led
to me to train as a vicar at this stage in my life.

Julia and I met on holiday when we were teenagers. One of the first
things Julia asked me was, “What do you think about God?” I was a bit
taken aback, but the question sowed a seed. Over the next year Julia and
I wrote to each other and I came to realise how important her faith was
to her. Although at first I skipped over any mention of Jesus or church,
after some time I decided I needed to find out more and bought myself a
Bible. Reading the Bible was literally a revelation! The following
summer we met again and soon started dating. When I stayed with her

family I went with them to their church. Church wasn’t anything like I’d
imagined it to be. Rather than being boring and dull, it was full of life. I
had lots of questions and after many conversations with Julia and others
I decided to give my life to Jesus. About a year later we were baptised
and a few months later we married.

We moved to Berkshire and joined a lively church, where we enjoyed
being part of a home group and helping with children’s and youth work.
It was during a youth group outing to a Saltmine Theatre Company
event that we both had a real sense of God’s calling. However, after
chatting and praying with our minister and others it wasn’t clear what
that calling might be. We had our children and a few years later moved
back to Suffolk. We settled in Wickham Market and joined All Saints
Church where, over the last 25 years, we have been involved in a wide
range of activities and roles.

After having been prompted by God about my calling many times,
someone suggested that I do a theology degree, which would both help
me discern my calling and at the same time prepare me for it. This led
me to study part-time at St John’s College, Nottingham. As part of my
studies, I had to do two placements. My first placement was with the
Ipswich Soup Kitchen, where I was able to share God’s love in practical
ways. My second placement was with the chaplaincy team at Ipswich
Hospital. It was there that I felt called to priesthood, and which led me
to Ridley Hall, Cambridge and All Saints Kesgrave and soon following
my ordination on 3rd July to St Matthews, Ipswich.

Our time with you at All Saints has been amazing and we have loved it.
You are a friendly, welcoming church and even though Covid
restrictions have meant that we have not been able to meet most of you
in person, we have enjoyed getting to know you all and being part of the
community via Zoom for Sunday worship and having virtual coffee and
fellowship after the service. It has been great to take part in midweek
meetings sharing and learning more about God. The fortnightly quizzes
have also been a lot of fun, even though it feels like we managed to be

in last place almost every time... The time has flown by and we will
really miss you all. Thank you for being a wonderful placement church.

Dimitri and Julia

HOLY HABITS,
Zoom Services and Bible Studies

Our next two Bible Studies will mainly focus around our Zoom theme
which is entitled “Holy Habits” from the Bible Reading Fellowship.

Holy Habits is an initiative to nurture Christian discipleship. It
explores Luke's model of church found in Acts 2:42-47, identifies ten
habits and encourages the development of a way of life formed by
them.

There is an incredible wealth of material available for viewing and
purchase on the Bible Reading Fellowship website for those who
would like to take this excellent series further for themselves

www.brfonline.org.uk/collections/holy-habits

The ten “Holy Habits” are:
Fellowship, Prayer, Gladness and Generosity, Serving, Worship,
Sharing Resources, Making New Disciples, Breaking Bread, Eating
Together and Bible Teaching

On Sunday the 6th of June we will include a sermon on one of the
“Habits” - SHARING RESOURCES and this Bible Study is a deeper
exploring of the meaning " Sharing Resources".-

" All the believers were together and had everything in common".

Sessions will be taking place on Tuesday 8th of June (7.15pm) and

Wednesday 9th of June(8.00pm)

On Sunday the 20th of June we will include a sermon on one of the
“Habits” - SERVING and this Bible Study is a deeper exploring of the
meaning " SERVING".-
" All the believers were together and had everything in common; they
sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need".

Sessions will be taking place on Wednesday 23rd of June (7.15pm)
and Thursday 24th of June (8.00pm)
To register your interest please respond to Robin by
email [email protected] or text 07443924285.
New and familiar faces are very welcome!

SILVER SCREEN LITE
We are currently planning the following sessions for Silver Screen Lite.
Monday June 7th and Monday June 21st.
“Silver Screen Lite” will be showing one of the classic sitcoms.
Each session runs from 2.30pm to 3.30pm. Because our toilets can
only be used in the event of necessity, we are proposing the whole thing
to last no longer than an hour with the practicality of leaving at the half
way point if needed.
If you have not already indicated through the Help Centre that you
would like to attend, please let Robin know by either phone 623388

or email [email protected] Numbers are limited by the
need to sit at least 2 metres apart from people who are not in our
household or support bubble.

LIGHTING PROJECT 2021
The Lighting Project is now nearing a very exciting point and we hope
to dovetail all the different elements involved in this, ready for
installation in August/September.
The project involves a total re-wiring of the whole church, (urgently
necessary for safety reasons), the installation of modern LED lighting in
a way that’s still sympathetic to the architecture, both modern and
medieval, better emergency lighting etc

Thank you so much to everyone who has contributed and/or written in
to support this vital work; we have £57,000 towards the total as the
newsletter goes to press.
We are still fundraising and I will be attempting the Orwell Walk on
27th June, hoping to do at least 12 or 13 miles of the 25. If you would
like to sponsor me please phone 07807 984589 or email me via the
website. (Alternatively, you can simply donate using the Blue Donate
Button on our website.)
Thank you in advance to everyone.

Please continue to pray too, for the whole endeavour: we really do want
our church to be a safe, welcoming and beautiful part of the Kesgrave
landscape.

FRAGMENTS OF A DIARY
(from Diary of a Russian Priest: Alexander Elchaninov) 1967

The notes that form this diary were written, mostly without any thought
of publication, in the 1920's and 30's; but after Elchaninov's death at the
age of 51, in 1934, they were gathered together and compiled by his
wife and then translated for wider distribution.

For me it continues to be one of those timeless books that distils
wisdom on our behalf: here are just three of those Fragments:

One: "Before I became a priest there was so much I had to be silent
about, holding myself back. Priesthood, for me, means the possibility of
speaking with a full voice."

Two: " Every sort of prayer is valuable, even inattentive prayer. The
power and action of the word are independent of the psychological state
of the person who utters it. If an injurious or obscene word pollutes and
wounds the soul both of him who speaks and of him who hears, the
sacred words of prayer, even if repeated absentmindedly, cover our
memory, mind and heart with a delicate network, and have a beneficial
effect on us, of which we ourselves are unaware."

Three: "Constantly, each day, each hour, God is sending us people.
circumstances, tasks, which should mark the beginning of our renewal;
yet we pay them no attention, and thus continually we resist God's will
for us.

Indeed, how can God help us? Only by sending us in our daily life
certain people, and certain coincidences of circumstance. If we accepted
every hour of our life as the hour of God's will for us, as the decisive,
most important, unique hour of our life - what sources of joy, love,
strength, as yet hidden from us, would spring from the depths of our
soul!"

WEEKLY PRAYER EMAIL
For the last year, since the first restrictions, we have been praying
together each Wednesday for people and topics that are on our hearts.
Initially this replaced our Wednesday morning Prayer service in church
during lock-downs and restrictions, and also supplemented the "prayer
book" in church, however it has now become wider. In praise to God
over this time we have seen so much answered prayer, with around 35
people joining in the weekly prayers.
For each topic raised, we know there is so much prayer from our group,
and we can be sure that God knows what is best for each person or item
he and will listen and answer. The more people that pray together, the
better still, as God has much purpose in us praying together. So if you
have a prayer you would like to submit, or if you would like to receive
the weekly prayers, please don't hold back and instead please contact
us.

2 Corinthians 1:11 "You also must help us by prayer, so that many will
give thanks on our behalf for the blessing granted us through the
prayers of many."

Each week prayer requests and updates are sent in and gathered
together. Examples would be for people who are sick or going through a
difficult time, or for a situation that needs prayer. Please be sure that
you have permission for us to pray for someone, who may also be made
anonymous if preferred, and of course avoid including anything that is
confidential- God knows the details anyway.

On Wednesday morning I send out the combined list of prayers, aiming
to send these by 8:00am.. These also include some weekly prayers and
reflections contributed by Sybil Holbrook or Mary Bendell. For anyone
raised to us for prayer, we continue to pray for that person each week
until the originator asks us to stop, along with any updates from the
originator. In this way we are persistent in prayer and can provide much
prayer support through difficult times.

This is different to the prayer chain, which is for more urgent requests
that can't wait till next Wednesday (please see next item).

If you would like to receive the weekly prayers email, or if you would
like to submit a prayer request for the weekly prayers, please contact
[email protected] or 07857 838678.

"Pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks, for this is the will of
God in Christ Jesus concerning you". 1 Thessalonians 5:17

PRAYER CHAIN

If at any time you have an urgent need for prayer, please consider
contacting the prayer chain. A team of our ministers and faithful people
will provide prayer support quickly, usually the same day or
sooner. Prayers are confidential to the prayer chain although if required
people can be made anonymous.

If preferred, you can discuss your prayer with Sybil or John first, who
can write the prayer for you. Prayer chain requests are not included in

the weekly prayers email unless it is requested- so please ask if you
wish for your prayer to be included in the weekly prayers.

To send in a request to the prayer chain, contact either Sybil Holbrook
or John Wittgreffe as below or email [email protected]

Sybil: [email protected] 07428 001819

John: [email protected] 07857 838678

THE ASK JOURNAL
Last weekend our Son and some of his school friends set off on their
practice Bronze DofE expedition. His 75-litre rucksack was filled to the
brim with essentials such as a sleeping bag, spare clothing, mess tin, and
the all-important water, food and energy filled snacks. Heavy rain was
forecast at various points over the entire weekend! He arrived at school
at 10am to meet with his team and expedition leaders, and the buzz of
excitement and chatter filled the air. Due to covid restrictions at the time
they were unable to stay overnight in tents at a campsite as usual, but to
make the expedition realistic they loaded their rucksacks still further
with tents, stoves and gas canisters. By this point they were well and
truly weighed down! After the initial briefing, they headed off with their
leader into the beautiful surrounding countryside, using their maps for
direction and their flapjack and cereal bars for sustenance! Over the
entire weekend they walked a total of 21.6 miles, an amazing
achievement, met some friendly alpacas in a field and were encouraged
by numerous members of the general public who were intrigued what
they were up to! Listening to him chat afterwards, it appeared that at
times the expedition was really enjoyable and easy going - the sun was
out, snacks were plentiful, and the map was held the right way round to
clearly show the route! At other times however, the rainclouds

gathered, feet and shoulders were tired and aching, and the symbol on
the map that looked like a subway under a dual carriageway was
incorrect and a few more miles had to be added to the route to find a
safe crossing. It got me thinking how like life that expedition was.
Quite often everything is going swimmingly - the sun is shining, our
burdens seem light, and we feel confident that we’re heading in the right
direction. At other times however, we wonder how we are going to
keep putting one foot in front of the other. We’re weary under the
weight of our rucksacks which can be full of worry, upset or sadness,
we’re soaked through from the rain and we can’t even locate our
position on the map let alone know the direction we’re supposed to be
heading in.

Before his expedition our Son had brushed up on his navigation skills,
in particular how to correctly set the dial of his compass to north and
then how to use it in conjunction with a map. Knowing that no matter
which way he then turned, the magnetic needle on the compass would
always point north, reassured him that he would be able to discover
which way was north, east, south and west and would help him on his
way.

Sometimes our lives are so busy and full of distractions that we
suddenly lose sight of where we are and which direction it is we are
headed – we feel utterly lost. In Psalm 25:1 & 4-5 David says “In you,
Lord my God, I put my trust…..Show me your ways, Lord, teach me
your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my
Saviour, and my hope is in you all day long.” As Christians on our
journey through life, it is so important for us to reset our spiritual
compasses each and every day to make sure that they are set to north i.e.
God, and keep checking on our direction frequently. We also need make
sure that we are using and following the map correctly – using our
bibles and God’s word to inform our decisions. Then we know with
absolute certainty that we will be walking along the right path through
life. If we reach a crossroads and the direction of travel is unclear, or
there is an unexpected obstacle in our path, trusting our heavenly father

to be our compass, and relying on our map – His word - will help guide
and lead us onwards.
Nest box update!
Just after I sent the last photograph of the bluetit’s nest for inclusion in
May’s notices, ‘Mrs Bird’ seemed to disappear. One night she didn’t come
back to the nest, and for the next couple of weeks the two eggs appeared to
have been abandoned. We assumed that was it for the nest box this year, but
out of curiosity the other day I turned the TV on again for one last look and
saw to my surprise that the two eggs were no longer there, and the nest
looked ‘different’. That night a bluetit settled down in the box to sleep, and
this is the scene today…...! We’re unsure if it is the same bird or a new one
that has taken over the nest, but we’re very excited to see what the coming
days bring!

JUNE 2021 GIVING: TRINITY!

I know this is stretching it a bit, but your “trinitarian” Giving is
currently supporting

1. The Lighting Project

2. The contribution we make to the Parish Share

3. The everyday running and work of our particular church

and, like the Trinity, these all overlap and are part of one another! If you
would like a less confusing representation, then the best one is probably
a plait: three strands interwoven together as one.

Regardless of the imagery, the main message is ‘Thank you’:- thank you
for keeping the work and mission of All Saints Kesgrave alive in the
current moment, whilst still enabling us to take thought for the
requirements of the future: the planned re-wiring and lighting work is
intended to last for the next 40 or 50 years.

All methods of Giving remain available, but the Church website has
been updated with two Donate Buttons: a Green button for General
Giving and a Blue button for supporting the Lighting Project, so please
see the website link for all other details and the updates on the improved
Parish Giving Scheme: You can now set up a Direct Debit for the PGS
without having to contact anyone at the church first.

https://www.askesgrave.org/supportus.htm

Also, most importantly, if you are experiencing financial hardship or
mounting debts please seek help through organisations like
Stepchange https://www.stepchange.org/

or Christians Against Poverty https://capuk.org/

ASK WEBSITE
Our new church website www.askesgrave.org has been up and running
for a few months now, but remains an ongoing project, particularly
during the coming days and weeks in light of COVID-19 developments.

Church of England’s ‘A Church Near You’ site –
https://www.achurchnearyou.com/church/2061/
Available on both websites are the Rev Robin Spittle’s ‘Thought for the
Times’ videos, which can be accessed easily from the home pages. If
you are on Facebook, please like and follow us on our page – All Saints

– where we will also upload important developments and information,
videos and ideas for prayer and worship.

KESGRAVE LIBRARY NEWS
– JUNE 2021
Have you read everything on your ‘To Read’ shelf and are now
desperate for something new? Kesgrave Library is open for customers
to come in and choose books for themselves.

However, we understand that some customers may be feeling nervous
about returning to browsing, so we will be continuing to run our Select

space. If you would like to continue to use this service, please ring us to
arrange a time/date for collection of your requests.

Select & Collect – This service is open to any age group and has proved
