ISSUE NO 86 – 28.11.21

December 2021/

JANUARY 2022

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
December is the darkest month of the year with short days and cold dark
nights but it will soon be Christmas, a time for celebrating.
After a lockdown last Christmas and nearly two years when our lives
have been changed 2021 should be extra special.

The original reason for Christmas was the Christian celebration of the
birth of Jesus and this is still a traditional part of the festivities for many
people.

Christians believe God sent his son, Jesus, to bring light into a world of
darkness. Through his life he gave a message of love, hope and
forgiveness. Through his death and resurrection, he suffered then rose
again, overcoming death that we may walk in God's glorious light.

This year we have had the church re-wired and new lights installed,
making the building lighter and brighter. Our thanks go to many
individuals and organisations that have helped us achieve this update.

We look forward to welcoming you to a traditional Christmas
celebration this year with a variety of special festive services to enjoy.
There will be our well-loved Christingle service with candlelit oranges;
crib services for the young but enjoyed by many of all ages; plus three
differently themed carol services and a traditional Holy Communion on
the night of Christmas Eve. Some services will also be available online.

When the angel announced the birth of Jesus to the shepherds a huge
company of angels appeared, praising God.

Do come and join us as we celebrate and praise God for giving us Jesus,
the light of the world.

I wish you all a very happy Christmas.

Revd. Chris Nunn

WORD FROM THE STUDY
By the time this is published, we will be in the season of Advent.

Advent comes from the Latin word Adventus, which means waiting.
Why is it when we are in a hurry, things always seem to take longer.
My mum used to say “A watched pot never boils”! It is also the be-
ginning of the Church’s year, as last Sunday we celebrated Christ the
King, plus Stir Up Sunday, where we had over 40 people and children
making Christmas puddings in All Saint’s Church, Little Bealings. A
great success! A big “thank you” to Corinne and her team for organis-
ing this.

Advent is a time when we prepare ourselves to celebrate the birth
of our Lord. Christmas time is about God’s time invading our time.
How do you prepare? Scripture reading; time in prayer? We do not
choose presents for our family and friends on a whim. So why do we
always prepare for the coming of Christ on a whim? We think about
what our friends would like for presents and then go and buy it for
them; so our spiritual preparation for the coming of our Lord is im-
portant.

Last Christmas was only a shadow of what we would normally do
due to Covid. This year will be different, although we still have to be
careful of what we do, in order to keep ourselves and our loved ones
safe.
Please do join us for our Christmas Services, whichever one you
choose; you will be made most welcome.

May the peace of the Christ-child reign in your hearts and the joy
of the gift of Christ be our guide.

May I take this opportunity to wish you all a very Happy and
Peaceful Christmas and all the best for 2022.
Every blessing.

Reverend Gary Jones

ZOOM BIBLE STUDY-
THE BIBLE COURSE
We were delighted to have so many of you join us in exploring the best-
seller together and look forward to continuing the learning journey in
upcoming sessions in January.

In the same way as we did in the past, the sermon will be delivered on
Sundays 9th & 23rd of January and then followed by a Midweek
Zoom Bible Study.
At the time of this newsletter release, we are unsure of exact dates and
timings of the Midweek Zoom Bible Studies, however, please visit our
website for updates www.askesgrave.org. The dates will also be an-
nounced by our ministers at the services in due course.

ZOOM EPIPHANY SERVICE

Last year, we hosted a Zoom Epiphany Service, which featured input
from our wider Ministry Team, reflections from Robin, and a mixture of
collects and hymns.
We will repeat the same concept this year, so please join us via Zoom
on Thursday, January 6th 2022 at 7.30pm as we celebrate Epiphany
which concludes Christmas and introduces the Magi's Visit.

The link will be available both on the Church website and our Facebook
page.

DO YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW NEED PRAYER?

If at any time you or someone you know are in need of prayer, we have
an active prayer ministry who would love to pray for you. We believe

that God answers all of our prayers, as he loves us dearly and knows
just what we need. We have seen God work in so many different ways
through the prayer ministry. Please do not hesitate to contact if you feel
this can help.

If your prayer request is urgent, contact our prayer chain by call-
ing John Wittgreffe on 07857 838678 or email ask.prayer-
[email protected] specifying "Prayer Chain".

If you have an ongoing request for prayer, each Wednesday a
prayer request email goes out to ministers and faithful people who
will include your request in their prayers on Wednesday, or as soon as
possible thereafter. If you would like your prayer included, please use
the same contact as above stating "For Wednesday prayers", or both
Wednesday Prayers and Prayer Chain if appropriate.

All information is considered private to those who take part in the pray-
ers. If, however, you feel something is very sensitive, please mention
this and we will make the prayers anonymous before they go out- God
still knows who you mean!

If you would like private prayer with a minister, you can request this
and we will work something out for you. If for any reason John is una-
vailable, please contact one of our ministry team as in our contacts list.

"Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circum-
stances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." 1 Thessa-
lonians 5:16-18

THE ASK JOURNAL

Tuesday Mornings at All Saints are a wonderful mix of chatter, craft,
play, singing, munching of snack and tea & coffee!! It’s a real privilege
to be able to watch the little ones and their carers have fun, form friend-
ships, explore their creative side, and learn more about God!

Little Explorers alternates each week with Coffee, Chat & Play and both
groups are perfect for pre-school age children. Sessions are held in the
well-ventilated church hall and take place on a Tuesday morning (dur-
ing term time only) between 10am and 11.30am and cost £1.50 per
child. They provide a great opportunity for a cuppa and a chat with
other carers and their children, in a welcoming, friendly environment.
Coffee, Chat & Play provides time for free play in our light, spacious
hall. A pre-packaged snack is served to children at 10.45am and we fin-
ish sessions with a short singing time. Tea & coffee are available for
carers.

Little Explorers (formerly Messy Church) sessions offer children the
chance to play with toys and books and we have a biblically themed
sticking activity, along with colouring and play dough. Again tea & cof-
fee are available for carers. After an hour of play we serve a pre-pack-
aged snack to the little ones and move to the carpet area where we listen
to the bible story, enjoy bubble prayers, and a time of singing the ‘Great
Big God’ song plus other favourites.

I recently asked some of those attending what it is they enjoy about the
sessions. “My daughter and I always look forward to Little Explorers.
She loves all the activities, especially the play dough, craft, bubble pray-
ers and snack. It’s so nice to have these sessions to go to and get back to
socialising with other families in a safe environment.” Another com-
mented “I love coming along knowing there’s always a very warm wel-
come awaiting us, along with a hot drink. A place of refuge from the
craziness, and a safe place to play and learn about God. Perfect!

If you have little ones, why not give our groups a try? New and familiar
faces are always welcome and further details are available on our Face-
book page (All Saints Church Kesgrave) and our website www.ask-
esgrave.org/childrenswork We look forward to seeing you!

“Unless the Lord builds the house
Those who build it labour in vain.”

Psalm 127

A church exists because people make efforts and journeys both out-

As we move towards the end of this year and look forward to the next:
thank you, whatever your contribution is.

A CHRISTMAS QUESTION
A little boy was leaving a Christmas service with his father and paused
at the manger outside the church. He looked at it, tilted his head for an-
other angle, and then said to his father,
“It’s the same Jesus we had last year. Can’t we get a new Jesus?”
The father smiled and squatted next to his son. He was silent a couple of
seconds and then said, “Son, we’re Christians. We get the same Jesus
every Christmas. That’s how it works.”
In monasticism you don’t get a trendy new Jesus, you get the same old
Jesus everyone gets. That’s how it works. The monks who have become

spiritual and social guides for so many are not practicing a new religion;
they practice a very old one, the religion based on the life of Jesus.

St Benedict wrote the Rule within the context of his Christian faith and
so his teachings cannot be separated from the teachings of of Jesus.
The word ‘rule’ is something of a problem for us. We automatically re-
sist rules, but try thinking about it this way: a rule of life is nothing
more than a set of ideas to help you determine the kind of person you
will be and the course of your life. These ideas will be the reason you
form certain habits, (exercising, paying bills on time, eating toast in the
morning, meditating and so on.)

We all have some sort of rule we live by, consciously or otherwise.
Your own rule consists of the little things you do that shape your life.
The desire for balance or inner calm, the yearning for a life that feels
right: these are the reasons we live by some sort of collected wisdom.

Your rule of life is nothing more than what you have determined is the
most important to seeking and maintaining a meaningful existence; your
rule is a collection of what you think matters.

Your rule is what makes life worthwhile. It is an expression of how you
are spending your energy. It indicates what you value most. Your rule is
the glue that holds your life together. By your rule you make choices
about how you will spend your time and resources, you make choices
about how you will spend yourself.
