ALL SAINTS KESGRAVE NEWSLETTER ISSUE NO 106 – 26.11.23 December 2023- January 2024
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY We are just about to enter the church season of Advent- a time of waiting. A time when we prepare once again to celebrate the birth of Jesus. And of course all of us, myself included, have been through a time of waiting- you’ve been waiting for a new Vicar since Robin retired, and since the 22nd October, I have been waiting to start my ministry here. I wonder how you’ve waited? With hope, with anxiety, impatiently or patiently? I must confess that I find it hard just waiting and usually start planning, so it’s probably just as well that Mike and I have had a great deal to do in our time of waiting- packing and unpacking- working out where to put things in our new home and of course finding the best dog walks for Luna our Labradoodlepoodle. But I’ve also had time to rest- something which in today’s busy world has felt like a luxury, and also much more difficult than I thought it would be! As we approach Advent however, I’m reminded that God and Jesus knew the importance of rest. Genesis tells us that on the seventh day, after God had finished creating the world and everything in it, God rested; and the gospels contain many examples of times when Jesus withdrew from the crowds and from his disciples to spend time alonetime with God. However hard or impossible that might seem as we look at all we need to do before Christmas, may I encourage us all to build in some times of rest during Advent and Christmas. Spend some time on your own with God, sharing your hopes and fears, asking Him to guide you in the year ahead. We all want that perfect Christmas that we see in the adverts or in all those Christmas movies. But if we think back to the very first Christmas that didn’t go to plan at all! I can’t imagine that Mary’s birth plan included a long journey and giving birth in a stable. And I’m pretty sure she wasn’t expecting so many strangers visiting after the birth. The Christmas message is a pretty simple one- its all about love. The love that God has for us- a love so great that He sent His Son to die on
the cross for our sins. And to quote the Beatles “All you need is love!” When we think back over past Christmasses, what we remember is not all the gifts we’ve had, but the fun (or sometimes culinary disasters) we’ve had with friends and family. So here’s praying that we all have a Christmas filled with love Rev’d Sarah WHAT’S ON DECEMBER 2023 Date Time Service Where / Who to contact Sat 2 nd Dec 10.00am12.30pm Saturday Drop-in At Little Bealings All Saints Little Bealings Sat 1 st Dec 2.00pm4.00pm Christmas Wreath Making at Little Bealings Angela Cobbold Hall, Little Bealings To book space email [email protected] Sun 3 rd Dec 8.30am9.30am Holy Communion at ASK All Saints Church Kesgrave Sun 3 rd Dec 10.00am11.00am Holy Communion at ASK All Saints Church Kesgrave ASK Church YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtZ91ENdlxMPUZYDHR5-aQ Sun 3 rd Dec 10.00am11.00am F.I.G Family At ASK Church Hall. FINANCE AND PARISH SHARE 2023 We have three main financial responsibilities as a church: 1) To keep the church going in all its myriad ways! • Have a look at the website What's On page to see all that we offer in the way of services, events; • Add in the less visible part of our work: pastoral visiting, home communions, services in care homes • Add in baptisms, weddings, funerals • Add in the huge amount of voluntary effort that sustains all this 2) To keep the church in good repair (Fabric) The permanent parts of the church: wood, stone, bricks etc are termed the Fabric of the church; continual maintenance is necessary to provide
a safe, welcoming building that meets the modern standards of health and safety 3) Parish Share paid to the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich each year The Parish Share is our share of the total Diocesan costs spread across 400 + parishes; it covers the cost of stipendiary Vicars, the cost of ongoing ministerial training and study days, the cost of most of the legal advice and back-up we receive, and the work of the DAC (Diocesan Advisory Committee) which advises on fabric, Faculties, churchyards etc This year it is £52,584 which as you can see is a huge challenge; at the time of writing this (21st November 2023) the predicted shortfall is about £11,500 by December 31st 2023 If you would like to contribute specifically to the Share please let Emma Burrows or myself know so that your donation is ringfenced for that purpose THANK YOU to each and everyone who make all three parts possible: you are part of centuries of generosity! For any queries, please contact me Sally Wainman 07807 984589 DO YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW NEED PRAYER? If at any time you or someone you know are in need of prayer, we have an active prayer ministry who would love to pray for you. We believe that God answers all of our prayers, as he loves us dearly and knows just what we need. We have seen God work in so many different ways through the prayer ministry. Please do not hesitate to contact if you feel this can help. If your prayer request is urgent, contact our prayer chain by calling John Wittgreffe on 07857 838678 or email [email protected] specifying "Prayer Chain".
If you have an ongoing request for prayer, each Wednesday a prayer request email goes out to ministers and faithful people who will include your request in their prayers on Wednesday, or as soon as possible thereafter. If you would like your prayer included, please use the same contact as above stating "For Wednesday prayers", or both Wednesday Prayers and Prayer Chain if appropriate. All information is considered private to those who take part in the prayers. If, however, you feel something is very sensitive, please mention this and we will make the prayers anonymous before they go out- God still knows who you mean! If you would like a private prayer with a minister, you can request this and we will work something out for you. If for any reason John is unavailable, please contact one of our ministry team as in our contacts list. "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 John Wittgreffe, Elder UKRAINE AID Ukraine has lost some media attention since the horrifying events in Israel erupted, causing so much grief, anxiety and suffering to millions. In scripture we are commanded to, " ...be not troubled..." in a world of, "...wars and rumours of wars..." ( Matthew 24.6), but also to intercede for others and to care for all who suffer and are in need. "Lord, I ask You to bring peace in Ukraine, that Your sovereignty and almighty healing power be made known, in Jesus` name". No person of faith, need ever be idle! But the war against Ukraine continues, with the ever-growing list of casualties, the brutal human cost of defending and seeking to take back occupied territories. I am no historian, politician or military strategist, to make a "best case" for assisting Ukraine, but I see something of the
human need, not so very far away, that I can actually do something about, so my support activities for Ukraine continue as best I can. I have been delayed in commencing my 11th supplies trip, due to the amount of work required to prepare the gifted vehicle, but I hope to start soon! The time has not been wasted though, but spent in; raising funds, gathering quality supplies, making a fourth large ( John Grose again!) van load delivery of living aids - wheelchairs, electric hoists, commodes, braked walkers etc (kindly donated by Medequip Ipswich) to a warehouse in London for onward transport to recovery centres in Ukraine, and in progressing the administrative work each trip requires. The new trailer mentioned in the previous article has been bought in Ukraine and is already in use. Ukrainian groups in Felixstowe and Ipswich, have raised some funds and added to the generous individual donations ( money and items) of friends and strangers, and some supportive Suffolk churches, which make each supplies trip possible. I share with many, brief accounts and photos of deliveries made and the very real help and encouragement this brings. As the song goes, "Our God is an Awesome God!" - He provides, that His plans and purposes be fulfilled. I had responded to the hospital request for a dialysis machine, that at that time I only had £65 in my Ukraine funds, but would pray and ask our Father about this need and He would provide if it is His will. within 9 days, the exact model requested had been identified and the full sum raised. The machine was seen by a Ukrainian GP and then checked by a renal dialysis technician. I excitedly informed the hospital, only to be told they no longer needed it as they had received funds locally and acquired 4 machines! - The option of the machine I had found, was passed to British Ukrainian Aid to be considered for another hospital, and the generous donors all confirmed they were happy for me to use their donations for another vehicle - so, good news all round! My heartfelt thanks to all who pray, who have given or supported in numerous other ways - THANK YOU ALL!
If any wish to donate via my GoFundMe ( funds administered via the registered charity " British Ukrainian Aid"), please see the link below. Or, if you wish to give or support in some other way, contact me and leave a message if I cannot immediately respond. God bless and keep you all, David Jacobs 07500531901
