THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Shouts above the chaos?

We often wonder how much our society reflects Christian principles,
and some even wonder whether we are too far gone to be
redeemed?! However, amidst all the news reports we get that typically
focus on the dire and the dismal, I have been completely taken aback by
the response to the pandemic itself, and its relationship to the second
commandment of Jesus "Love your neighbour as yourself" (Matthew
22:39).

Unanimously, across the globe, society after society, no-matter what
their basis of political or religious persuasion, have sacrificed so much
and gone to so much effort to protect those who are more vulnerable to

serious infection, rather than let the virus take its own course.

There have been arguments along the way, political machinations,
accusations of all kinds, yet above it all societies has voted with their
actions- we hold the lives of our most vulnerable dear, rather than
leaving them to their fate to protect the strong and rather than preserving
the vitality of our economies.

The human soul is so precious, one soul is as precious as the next,
whatever bodily vessel it resides in, whatever the society it is spawned
in, whatever it's age in years on Earth, whatever it's physical or mental
health on Earth. The soul is a gift of God, it is precious and eternal, and
God loves each soul as his own dear child.

And so, it seems, do the many nations, at this one momentous and
historic moment in time.

Will this be remembered as the age that World demonstrated how much
we care, how much of Jesus teaching has sunk in so widely even in the
subconscious? I hope so. In reality I think it may be subordinate to
being remembered as the age when medical science had it's back to the
wall and came out shining. With vaccine technology and anti-viral
technology that has accelerated by decades within a year, possibly with
immense consequences for fighting diseases of all kinds in the future
way beyond this pandemic.

However, isn't this what we have prayed for earnestly, week by week?
For miracles to happen, for our scientists to prevail against the odds, for
governments to do their utmost to treat and prevent suffering?

Can we see God shouting above the chaos, in the success of science and
in the choices of our Governments? I think so.

God has an eternal habit of turning what seems like disaster into greater
good. Whilst his plans run across both this life and the next. No doubt
there are many twists and turns to come yet. However, one day we will

understand so much more, looking back with the big picture. Meanwhile
perhaps, if you wish, we can share in a prayer:

"Thank you, Father, that you love each of us as your own. We thank you
for all the ways we have seen your hand at work as we have prayed for
wisdom for those in authority and for your miracles- from the response
of nations, to scientific wonders, to the selfless spirit of so many, and to
the skill and dedication of those battling the pandemic. Help us continue
to defeat the pandemic and to honour you in building back better. "

Amen

HOLY HABITS,
Zoom Services and Bible Studies

In our next two Bible studies in July, we'll continue our Zoom theme of
"Holy Habits" from the Bible Reading Fellowship.

Holy Habits is an initiative to nurture Christian discipleship. It explores
Luke's model of church found in Acts 2:42-47, identifies ten habits and
encourages the development of a way of life formed by them.

For those who wish to further their study of this excellent series, there is
a huge wealth of information available for purchase and viewing on the
Bible Reading Fellowship website.

www.brfonline.org.uk/collections/holy-habits

The ten “Holy Habits” are:
Fellowship, Prayer, Gladness and Generosity, Serving, Worship,
Sharing Resources, Making New Disciples, Breaking Bread, Eating
Together and Bible Teaching

In the sermon on Sunday 4th of July we will address a further one of
the "Habits" - MAKING MORE DISCIPLES and Bible Study is an
extended exploration of the meaning of MAKING MORE
DISCIPLES. Making more disciples is an important part of our
Christian journey. To make more disciples, we all need to become
disciples, and we can do this by living and breathing our faith, by
becoming more like Jesus. We may not all be great preachers, but we
don’t have to be. People will know when we're speaking honestly and
with integrity about our faith.
“And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being
saved."…

Please join our session on Thursday 8th of July (7.30pm)

We will be preaching a sermon on “WORSHIP” on Sunday 18th of
July, and midweek Bible Study is an opportunity to explore WORSHIP
in greater depth. Worship can arise from a glad heart, but it can also be

the deliberate choice of a hurting one. All of life can be worship when
lived for love of God. Learning to make everything we do in our daily
lives a worship offering to God is about 24/7 life, everyday discipleship.
" They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and
sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favour of all the people."

Session will be taking place on Wednesday 21st of July (7.30pm)
To register your interest please respond to Robin by
email [email protected] or text 07443924285.

New and familiar faces are very welcome!

SILVER SCREEN LITE
We will continue to show one of the classic sitcoms for Silver Screen
Lite on Monday July 5th and Monday July 19th.
It has been a pleasure to see so many people get so much out of those
sessions so far. Come along and enjoy laughter and companionship with
us.
Each session runs from 2.30pm to 3.30pm. As our toilet facilities can
only be used in the case of necessity, we propose the whole session to
be a maximum of an hour with the possibility of leaving at half way if
necessary.
If you have not already indicated through the Help Centre that you
would like to attend, please let Robin know by either phone 623388
or email [email protected]

LIGHTING PROJECT JULY 2021
The Lighting Project is now at a really exciting stage: all the
preparatory work has been done, the Diocesan Advisory Committee
(DAC) has approved the proposals and we can now display the 28 Day
Public Notice which will, hopefully, lead to the formal granting of the
Faculty. This will give us the legal permission we need to start the work
of the actual installation.

The Public Notice will go up on the outside of the church on the gates,
and on the Porch notice board and in the church itself. A display of the
Lighting Design will also go up, in the Porch and in the Church; if you
have any questions at all please email me or phone 07807 984589 and I
will do my best to answer them.

We are hoping the work will start in August and full details of
alternative worship provision will be made nearer the time; the work is
expected to take 8 - 10 weeks and the church will be totally closed
during that period, to everyone except the installers. This will keep
health & safety risks to a minimum.

We continue to fundraise and apply for grants, but the generosity has
been amazing and we look forward to seeing the fruits of all those
efforts in the Autumn.

Thank you everyone

RULE OF LIFE

A Rule of Life is associated primarily with monasticism: something that
only Contemplative Orders of nuns or monks are likely to be able to live
up to! How can any ordinary mortal worship 7 times a day when there
is so much else to do?

The sermons for some of our Zoom Services recently have been based
on a series of "Holy Habits" and on June 20th Chris Nunn gave us a
lovely talk on the theme of Service.

This started with memories of her childhood and how her mother used
to say things like "Don't make it a habit!", when she was cross about
something that Chris had done! However, habits can be very useful
things as well and, in a way, a Rule of Life, in its simplest form, is
based on these kind of good habits.

The purpose of a Rule is to give a framework to one's life: it is often
described as a kind of trellis supporting our lives both spiritually and
practically. It is not meant to be the cause of endless guilt trips (!) when
the only "rule" you have achieved that day is to possibly get round to
cleaning your teeth. It is therefore important to create a Rule that is at
least moderately achievable: a short period of Bible Study or reflection
once a week, once a month; a few moments of prayer when you first
wake up in the morning, even if it's only an "arrow" prayer and so on.

One of the most famous Rules is the Rule of St Benedict and it has
remained justly famous precisely because it incorporated an excellent
understanding of human frailty and the need for flexibility within any
Rule. The aim, perhaps, is to accumulate gradually, through gentle
habits, an understanding that Christ is there at every moment of our
lives, waking or sleeping: a companion who goes with us in our daily
lives.

So if you feel rushed, desperate, overwhelmed by the commitments of
each day, remember that the words: 'Lord, thank you' are a prayer and
that silent prayer is available to us too. St Paul wrote: Romans 8 v.
26 "In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not

know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us
through wordless groans."

The Rule of St Benedict was centred around the Psalms and so we can
say too: "I sought the Lord and he answered me; he delivered me from
all my fears........this poor man called and the Lord heard him; he saved
him out of all his troubles; for the angel of the Lord encamps around
those who fear him, and he delivers them." (Psalm 34)

WEEKLY PRAYER EMAIL
For the last year, since the first restrictions, we have been praying
together each Wednesday for people and topics that are on our hearts.
Initially this replaced our Wednesday morning Prayer service in church
during lock-downs and restrictions, and also supplemented the "prayer
book" in church, however it has now become wider. In praise to God
over this time we have seen so much answered prayer, with around 35
people joining in the weekly prayers.

For each topic raised, we know there is so much prayer from our group,
and we can be sure that God knows what is best for each person or item
he and will listen and answer. The more people that pray together, the
better still, as God has much purpose in us praying together. So if you
have a prayer you would like to submit, or if you would like to receive
the weekly prayers, please don't hold back and instead please contact
us.

2 Corinthians 1:11 "You also must help us by prayer, so that many will
give thanks on our behalf for the blessing granted us through the
prayers of many."

Each week prayer requests and updates are sent in and gathered
together. Examples would be for people who are sick or going through a

difficult time, or for a situation that needs prayer. Please be sure that
you have permission for us to pray for someone, who may also be made
anonymous if preferred, and of course avoid including anything that is
confidential- God knows the details anyway.

On Wednesday morning I send out the combined list of prayers, aiming
to send these by 8:00am.. These also include some weekly prayers and
reflections contributed by Sybil Holbrook or Mary Bendell. For anyone
raised to us for prayer, we continue to pray for that person each week
until the originator asks us to stop, along with any updates from the
originator. In this way we are persistent in prayer and can provide much
prayer support through difficult times.

This is different to the prayer chain, which is for more urgent requests
that can't wait till next Wednesday (please see next item).

If you would like to receive the weekly prayers email, or if you would
like to submit a prayer request for the weekly prayers, please contact
[email protected] or 07857 838678.

"Pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks, for this is the will of
God in Christ Jesus concerning you". 1 Thessalonians 5:17

PRAYER CHAIN

If at any time you have an urgent need for prayer, please consider
contacting the prayer chain. A team of our ministers and faithful people
will provide prayer support quickly, usually the same day or
sooner. Prayers are confidential to the prayer chain although if required
people can be made anonymous.

If preferred, you can discuss your prayer with Sybil or John first, who
can write the prayer for you. Prayer chain requests are not included in
the weekly prayers email unless it is requested- so please ask if you
wish for your prayer to be included in the weekly prayers.

To send in a request to the prayer chain, contact either Sybil Holbrook
or John Wittgreffe as below or email [email protected]

Sybil: [email protected] 07428 001819

THE ASK JOURNAL

Nest box update!

This month sees the final update of Mr & Mrs Bird and their blue tit family,
and I’ve included some photographs from our front garden bird box too!

Since the last newsletter, six of the eight eggs hatched, and the babies grew
quickly and started to gain their feathers. Mr and Mrs Bird were busy in and
out of the box, providing food and generally keeping the nest tidy and free
from any unwanted insects. Apparently, it hasn’t been a very good year for
blue tits. According to the BBC’s Springwatch programme, the preferred
food for their young – tiny green caterpillars found on oak trees – hasn’t
been as readily available this year, due to the late arrival of spring.
Certainly, our birds nested much later than usual this year compared to other
years, which hopefully worked in their favour somewhat. Having said that,
when I looked at the camera the other day, the four largest birds had fledged,
but left behind were the two smallest birds which sadly hadn’t survived. I’m
not sure if it was perhaps the intense heat of the past few days, or a lack of
food. It certainly seems very quiet in the back garden now, as the babies
were cheeping quite loudly towards the end and there was always a flurry of
activity from the parents!

Today, I was pottering in the front garden and glanced up at our other bird
box and saw a small, bright yellow face peering out at me! One of the
parents was in a nearby tree calling for it, and suddenly it decided to take the
plunge and flew out of the box, straight into our car and then the garage

door! Looking understandably startled, it shook itself and then finally
seemed to get the hang of things and flew into a neighbour’s rose bush!
Phew! I think I was almost as excited and nervous as when our children
learned to ride their bikes when they were little!! So, that’s it for another
year! Fly free little birds – God’s beautiful creation!

JULY 2021 GIVING:

Over these last few weeks I’ve been working on the Faculty application
for the Lighting Project; it won’t surprise you to hear that there are
pages and pages of questions on all aspects of the church’s life:
historical, social, community outreach, mission etc and it’s made me
aware of the role that All Saints Church Kesgrave has played down the
centuries and the role we still play as one of the 450 parishes in the
Diocese and as part of the wider mosaic that makes up the Church of
England.

There is such a huge amount of background work that goes into keeping
any church going: the Diocese, for instance, has a bank of experts (most
of them voluntary) that advise on archaeology, finance, safeguarding,
legal issues etc and this is why we pay towards the Parish Share as well
as towards everything that enables our own particular church to survive!

Thank you to each and everyone for your support.

All methods of Giving remain available, but the Church website has
been updated with two Donate Buttons: a Green button for General
Giving and a Blue button for supporting the Lighting Project, so please
see the website link for all other details and the updates on the improved
Parish Giving Scheme: You can now set up a Direct Debit for the PGS
without having to contact anyone at the church first.

https://www.askesgrave.org/supportus.htm

Also, most importantly, if you are experiencing financial hardship or
mounting debts please seek help through organisations like
Stepchange https://www.stepchange.org/

or Christians Against Poverty https://capuk.org/

• Occasional Giving

If you would like to support our Church financially a simple BACS
payment can be made to:

Acc Name: Kesgrave Parochial Church Council

If you can also Gift Aid your donation, please print off a Gift Aid form
from the All Saints Kesgrave website (see Support Us) and give me a
ring on 07807 984589

• Regular Giving (Direct Debit)

For regular giving please contact the Parish Giving Scheme

and inflation proofed giving

There are now three options for signing up:

GOOD LUCK AND THANK YOU DIMITRI!
It has been a real blessing to have Dimitri Theulings here at All Saints
Kesgrave on placement since September, but sadly, his tenure with us is
coming to an end and he will start his curacy at St Matthew's Ipswich in
July.
During his time with us, he has become an integral part of both the
ministry team and our church family as a whole.
The fact that he has endured so much intensive learning in the most
challenging year of all is truly amazing and inspiring!

Indeed, we have had a challenging year, with lockdowns and other
restrictions making it difficult to meet him in person, but we've enjoyed
listening to his sermons and getting to know him and his wife Julia via
Zoom for Sunday worship, quiz, and having virtual coffee after the
service.

We Wish Dimitri the best of luck in his new venture and we hope he is
able to come to visit us at All Saints Kesgrave so that we can say a
proper " Hello " and " Goodbye ".
