ALL SAINTS KESGRAVE NEWSLETTER ISSUE NO 112 – 30.06.24 July 2024 THOUGHT FOR THE DAY Change we all go through changes in life; there are the normal ones of changing from a child to an adult, with all of the complications that come with it. There are changes made through choice, for example getting married, we change from only having to consider ourselves to having to allow for another person's point of view, what they have planned for a certain date etc etc. Even the weather changes, as we know us Brits are known for complaining about the weather, it’s too hot
or too cold, windy or for some people it’s not hot or cold enough. But as the year rolls on the seasons change winter to spring, spring to summer and so on. We have to accept the natural changes that happen because they will happen with or without us, we are never happy with change, most people don’t like it and would rather that things stayed the same. However, when change happens it can sometimes take us by surprise and we find that we have to go with it or get left behind. As a country we are in a season of change, by the time this is printed the general election will be upon us and it looks likely that it too will involve change, quite possibly a change of Government and Prime Minister for a start, that’s before all the changes that a new government will bring in as they take charge. On a personal note, I have been going through change myself as I through the training to be a Reader; this is something that a few years ago wouldn’t have even crossed my mind. But it did and I thank God it did and thanks to the encouragement of the church and Mike, here I am at the end of the first years training and looking ahead to the start of the second year. When God enters our lives it too involves change, as it says in the Bible in Ezekiel 36:26 ‘I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh’. In short God will remove our old uncaring nature and hardheartedness and replace it with a new caring nature and a soft heart. This does not mean we will be people who are easy to be trampled on, and pushed to one side, or that we will not be able to stand our ground when we are challenged. What it does mean is that we will be able to see the other person’s point of view and we will notice the beggar in the street. We will even be willing to help others in their time of need. We will get involved with church activities and start praying and attending church. As a church, we are in a season of change and we are contemplating the future of the church and when we are going to get a new vicar, this will possibly involve a lot of changes and again we will have to go with the
changes or get left behind. But we will like the phoenix rise from the ashes of being ‘in vacancy’ and follow our new vicar to better and brighter things. organisation goes into this so that walkers and runners have the back up of a well-signposted route along the river and surrounding countryside, with checkpoints at regular intervals. Walkers can do between 3 and 25 miles and runners have a choice of a trail marathon, half marathon or an ultra marathon (55k) I managed 10 miles in total this year, to help raise money for our All Saints Kesgrave Parish Share and any further sponsorship money is still welcome. I know that some people have reservations about the Share but you can support the Fabric Fund for our church instead if you prefer (just let me know). The Orwell Challenge next year is on 29th June 2025 so plenty of time to get fit if you want to take part! UKRAINE AID UPDATE I commenced my 12th trip to Ukraine at the end of May, travelling alone this time for the delivery of the usual supplies ( toiletries, hygiene and baby-care products and some foodstuffs) to the shelter in Lviv, and the remaining goods ( generators, medical supplies, some blankets and living aids etc) to a charity in Mykolaiv. I assisted the volunteer mechanics in preparing and painting the Nissan Pathfinder 4x4 and then drove it alone to a front-line battalion in Zaporizhia, where it will assist the vastly outnumbered forces in their mobility needs and the recovery of casualties. Unfortunately, I did not have access to the financial resources required for a full conversion,( reconstructed internal frame, lining with galvanised aluminium and some ballistic protection), but the car has sufficient adaptability to receive a stretcher and was very warmly received as a gift from so many people in Britain! One of the soldiers later wrote to me of his gratitude for what this community has enabled, "...You instill hope in people that there is a chance in this world that people can live "humanly" in harmony with God and with each other...." another of the multiple expressions of the encouragement Ukrainians feel with such practical evidence that `ordinary` people continue to care for them! Seeing something of Ukrainian courage and resilience, kindness and hospitality amidst frightening adversity, and of the hope inspired by such missions, makes the efforts of lone driving ( around 2000 miles), the time commitments, the trip preparations, fundraising and organisation, pale into relative insignificance! All customs requirements are met, within the now comprehensive, fully electronic system Ukraine operates, recording details of all goods; their donor/provider, the registered recipient organisations, and monitoring the distribution of all humanitarian aid. This trip was a particular personal blessing to me, for it enabled me to fulfil a wish to meet the desire of one of the refugee families I assisted in Poland at the beginning of the war, (to gain visas and join host families in Britain), to support their own young nephew who is fighting with the battalion delivered to. It was good to meet him, although the
context is sobering and socialising with soldiers on active service in war, always a humbling mixture of emotions and thoughts. The destinations, and being alone, also made it easy to visit the birthplace of my maternal grandmother, en route in Ukraine, for the first time - something for family photo records! My return journey was via 3 coaches, and an 11-hour delay at the border with Poland. But, as with several previous trips, I enjoyed the very warm and generous hospitality of a Ukrainian family living temporarily in Krakow, whilst rebuilding progress is made on their destroyed home.
A further three Luton van loads of Medequip donated living aids have also been driven to the London Ukrainian run warehouse for onward delivery to Ukrainian recovery centres and civil distribution - always with the assistance of someone from Suffolk giving me their time to help with this. My Thanks to Medequip and again to John Grose for free van loans. As always, there are numerous individuals and several groups who have given financially (including anonymously), materially and of their time, to enable these ventures to continue. Many visitor and UK resident Ukrainians contribute significantly in many ways. The faithful group supporters include; Morrisons Hadleigh (Lisa), St Mary`s Hadleigh ( Olena), All Saints Kesgrave and Little Bealings church ( Natalie and Catherine), Kesgrave Mother`s Union ( Jenny), Ipswich International Church (24/7 prayer group), St Wilfred`s Church Sussex ( Colin and Celia), Felixstowe church`s breakfast club and Ukrainian group ( Kim and Sasha). Elmsett Methodist Church community group generously added their support ( Kathryn and Liz). The Hadleigh ( Suffolk) Sea Scout group donated a powerful generator (Keith) and my friend Ian donated 2 inverter generators. Valuable medical aid supplies received via Biola ( a nurse in Norfolk). Ainger Holbrows garage completed car preparations at value cost. Ken Wilding helped remove car seating. Alan bought much-needed new power tools. The Hadleigh Host Ukrainian group donated their remaining funds ( Shauna and Cyndy). There is not space to justly mention all who have supported and how, but every contribution is much valued!! - from supplies storage space ( Chris and Kate), assistance collecting, loading, invaluable Ukrainian administration and communications ( Olena), airport lift ( Mike), events management, the many supplies items given, words of advice and encouragement. My heartfelt thanks, and on behalf of Ukraine to every one of you, including the un-named!! If you would like to support these ventures, you can give via the "GoFundMe" QR code ( administered by registered charity British Ukrainian Aid) or contact me direct.
it is my intention to purchase another 4x4 vehicle and take it again, full of relevant supplies, to Ukraine and hopefully have sufficient funds to also convert it to a front line casualty evacuation vehicle with the full internal adaptations, which enhance its efficiency and safety. David Jacobs 07500 531901 ARMENIA UPDATE: Dear Friends Events in Armenia have prompted me to update you on Anna, Mayis, Edmond and Eduard who were part of our Church family at All Saints between 2016 and 2018. Following the rejection of their Asylum application to stay in the UK we/you as a Church have been supporting them since. This was mostly for the Education of the two boys but has also included various health problems. Recently Armenian politics have caused Anna and the boys to flee their home under threat of violence. Mayis (Anna's husband) has stayed behind to protect their property. We have now exhausted the financial resources that some of us have been giving regularly and which were augmented by occasional appeals to All Saints. Where we could manage the cost of Education, the need for Rent and food in a new City has proved too much. On top of this Anna has recently had a dangerous Cyst removed with a interest-free loan of £1200 from a contact in her new City. Is it possible for All Saints to renew it's commitment to this special family? I have attached a photo from the family Baptism that I
performed for them and am asking for your help. This can be done through Church (adding "Armenia" to let the Treasurer know it's fund destination). My own Bible reading this week included this observation on 2Corinthians 9:6-7. The passage reads:- "Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." The observation applies it in this way:- "Paul is taking up an offering, gathering funds from the Greek churches to provide relief for poverty-stricken believers in Jerusalem. It’s a big project, and Paul is encouraging the Corinthians to be generous. In fact, he has just finished telling them that God loves a cheerful (hilarios) giver." Distance between Christians doesn't stop them being a brother or sister in need. Anna needs our help. Every blessing your friend and former Vicar Robin Spittle
F.I.G FAMILY SERVICE We celebrated Father’s Day at our FIG (Faith in God) Family Service with great joy and creativity. We crafted different cards and "Dad's Toolboxes," sang hymns, and both children and grown-ups shared heartfelt prayers to our Heavenly Father. We prayed for all father figures in our lives and for those, who are no longer with us and watch over us from above, and for peace around the world. During the service, we also learned about how our loving Father God cares for us and helps us grow. It's a miracle how God makes things grow—from tiny seeds to huge trees. Even though we don't fully understand or see this growth happening, it never stops- day and night, thanks to God's miracle. (Mark 4: 26 - 29). We also listened to the parable of the mustard seed and were so engrossed in the activities that I forgot to take photos until the end, when we all played a fun game of soft football. Our next FIG Family Service will be on July 21st, starting at 10am after the Breakfast Special at 9:15am. We will be looking at the theme of Hospitality and the story of Mary and Martha. We can meet again in a relaxed atmosphere of worship and activities, with full tummies after the breakfast lovingly prepared by our brilliant Breakfast Team. In August, we are taking a break, so there will not be a Breakfast Special or FIG Family Service. We plan to return on Sunday, September 15th. Many thanks to our Ministry and Tech Team for their support and the hard work they have been doing to provide various services.
RIDE AND STRIDE Suffolk Historic Churches Trust Saturday 14th September 9am-5pm Annual Sponsored Ride and Stride is a national event, and every second Saturday in September cyclists and walkers are out making money for their local county Churches Trust. The idea started in Suffolk, and is now held across England, with Suffolk leading the table of funds raised. The Ride and Stride is the main source of income to Suffolk Historic Churches Trust to enable it to make grants to churches and chapels of all denominations towards repair and restoration costs. Ride and Stride is run entirely by volunteers and is inter-denominational, with participants sponsored for each place of worship visited between 9.00am and 5.00pm on Ride and Stride Day or with a donation, regardless of the number of churches visited. The money raised by each cyclist or walker is shared equally between the Suffolk Historic Churches Trust and the place of worship nominated by the participant. As important as the participants are the many volunteers who give up the day to man the churches and chapels and sign in the cyclists and walkers as they arrive. Hundreds of places of worship are manned
during the day and that takes quite a team of volunteers! It is a real community effort that is the lifeblood of the Trust. Additionally, we would greatly appreciate your assistance in welcoming participants here at All Saints Kesgrave, handling sign-up forms, and providing well-deserved refreshments such as tea, coffee, and biscuits to the striders as they journey from one church to another. You'll find the rota sheet conveniently located near the font at the church. Please consider sparing an hour of your time and adding your name to the volunteer rota. Your help will be sincerely valued. Thank you in advance for your kind support! JULY 2024 GIVING: "Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess his name. If at any time you or someone you know are in need of prayer, we have an active prayer ministry who would love to pray for you. We believe that God answers all of our prayers, as he loves us dearly and knows just what we need. We have seen God work in so many different ways through the prayer ministry. Please do not hesitate to contact if you feel this can help. If your prayer request is urgent, contact our prayer chain by calling John Wittgreffe on 07857 838678 or email [email protected] specifying "Prayer Chain". If you have an ongoing request for prayer, each Wednesday a prayer request email goes out to ministers and faithful people who will include your request in their prayers on Wednesday, or as soon as possible thereafter. If you would like your prayer included, please use the same contact as above stating "For Wednesday prayers", or both Wednesday Prayers and Prayer Chain if appropriate. All information is considered private to those who take part in the prayers. If, however, you feel something is very sensitive, please mention this and we will make the prayers anonymous before they go
