ALL SAINTS KESGRAVE NEWSLETTER ISSUE NO 108 – 18.02.24 March 2024 THOUGHT FOR THE DAY We are now coming into an early Easter, and it only seems a short time since we were celebrating Christmas with the birth of Christ. We are also approximately one quarter of the way through the year, soon be time to start the Christmas shopping again! We are now remembering the death and resurrection of Christ. But without the first event we would not have the second, it would be incomplete, just like what happened during the Napoleonic Wars. It is said that a message was flagged
from an English ship to the shore, ‘Wellington defeated..’ and a gasp of horror and surprise greeted the news, this was something that no-one had expected or wanted. Then the rest of the message came through ‘Napoleon at Waterloo’. It was only when the whole message got through was the situation understood. Then the people who got the message were able to celebrate and cheer. On that Easter morning Jesus disciples were in the depths of despair, their Lord had died a humiliating death on the cross and all appeared lost but, they had forgotten one vital thing, He had said that He would rise again. Which is what He did and without that happening we would not have Easter, and quite possibly not have the Christian faith that we have today, in other words the disciples did not understand the full message. It was only when Jesus came into the room, through a locked door, that first day of the week, that the disciples understood and were overjoyed. For the full story read John 20:19-20. Easter traditions and symbols have evolved over time, though some have been around for centuries. While to Christians, Easter is the celebration of the resurrection of Christ, many Easter traditions are not found in the Bible. The most prominent secular symbol of the Christian holiday, the Easter bunny, was reportedly introduced to America by the German immigrants who brought over their stories of an egg-laying hare. So where did the Easter bunny come from? The Bible makes no mention of a long-eared, fluffy-tailed creature who delivers decorated eggs to well-behaved children on Easter Sunday. Nevertheless, the Easter bunny has become a prominent symbol of Christianity’s most important holiday. The exact origins of this mythical mammal are unclear, but rabbits, known to be prolific breeders, are an ancient symbol of fertility and new life. Maybe this is where the idea first originated because they do breed, well, like rabbits. The egg is an ancient fertility symbol its’ also an ancient symbol of new life. It has long been associated with pagan festivals celebrating spring. So an egg laying hare while not entirely accurate is a mix of both hares/rabbits and eggs. Easter egg hunts and egg rolling are two popular egg-related traditions. In America they have the White House Easter Egg Roll, this is a race in which children push decorated, hard-boiled hens eggs across the White
House lawn. It’s an annual event held the Monday after Easter. The event has no religious significance, although some people have considered egg rolling symbolic of the stone blocking Jesus’ tomb being rolled away, leading to his resurrection. So as we are tucking into our Easter eggs this year, let’s remember how it all started, with the first Easter morning as the stone rolled away, and our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ emerged from the tomb. Q, how do Easter bunnies stay healthy? A, egg-cercises! EASTER LILIES Continuing our tradition at All Saints, we’d like to be able to decorate the church with lilies at Easter. If you would like to sponsor a lily in memory of a loved one, or as an act of thanksgiving, could you please let us know. The price will be the same as in previous years, which is £2.50 for each lily you’d like to buy.. If you could please let us have the cash with your order by Sunday 17th March, that will be really helpful, and will give us time to order them from the florist. ALL SAINTS KESGRAVE WITH LITTLE BEALINGS AND PLAYFORD As March begins we are already well into the Christian season of Lent. Each year seems to pass more quickly than the last and this year especially as Easter is early – the last day of March. As I write, snowdrops abound in gardens and churchyards. By the time you read this no doubt there will be many varieties of Spring flowers to enjoy. Here in rural Suffolk we are fortunate to see nature as it changes through the seasons. While the weather remains cold and dull or wet the new growth appearing can lift the spirits. ‘Be of good courage and God will strengthen your heart.’ Psalm 31;24 Over the centuries the six weeks of Lent has been observed as a time of fasting and frugality. Many people still give up something they enjoy during Lent to mark the time as preparation for Easter. Then we will remember the cruel death Jesus suffered on Good Friday for our redemption followed by his joyful resurrection on Easter Sunday, overcoming death so that we can hope for eternal life beyond death. Easter is more joyful than Christmas because we celebrate all that Jesus did in his life – for us. Easter services in our churches will joyfully celebrate God’s love for everyone. Rev. Chris Nunn MEN’S & LADIES’ BREAKFAST Please come along on Saturday, 16th March at 9.30am and join us at the Farmhouse Pub for our Men’s & Ladies’ Breakfast and fellowship. All ages are welcome. UKRAINE AID Since the last published article, David provided us with an update on his fifth 'John Grose' free-loaned Luton van load of living aids, continually donated from 'Medequip' to the Ukrainian warehouse in London, which he took with his friend Alan Smith at the end of January 2024. We praise God for all the above provisions that are so needed in Ukraine and received by grateful recipients, as shown in the photos!
Additionally, we received some good news from the Lviv Shelter coordinator (where David takes most of the aid), Anastasia, and her husband, Igor, that their baby girl was born. Although slightly premature, they were immensely grateful for her arrival, and Igor was allowed to come from the front line to meet his baby daughter Anya, although for a very short few-day release. Despite the war, new life continues, and we praise the Lord for this joy. David has already received some support towards the next trip, but much is needed still in addition to the funds required for delivery ( fuel, ferry, re-turn travel costs etc – David himself pays for food etc, and any cheap hotel needed ); a 4x4 vehicle for the usual conversion to front line recovery transport, the priority material items ( eg; medical etc and hygiene, vehicle maintenance tools, generators, high-quality thermal clothing only – nothing less can be afforded the very limited space, blankets etc). If you wish to assist please contact David on the number below, David Jacobs 07500531901 use https://gofund.me/cb2f46a8 or access the QR code above to donate via “GoFundMe” ( administered by registered charity BUA), or liaise with a relevant community group. Our sincere thanks, and on behalf of Ukrainian recipients, to all who help in any way. God bless and keep you all
22 YEARS OF PRAYER BROOMHILL POOL CAMPAIGN 2002 - 2024 Broomhill Pool is a Grade 2 listed,art-deco lido built in 1938; it closed in 2002 and the campaign to see it restored and re-opened has been ongoing. It is located in Sherrington Road, Ipswich, next to the Broomhill Library and is approximately 5 miles from our church, if you travel down the main Colchester Road. Over the years a finance package was assembled with the Heritage Lottery Fund, Ipswich Borough Council and leisure company Fusion Lifestyle all contributing and preliminary work actually started in 2020 just before Covid hit. The impact of the lockdowns and the restrictions that followed had a devastating financial effect on sports and leisure centres and it is only just recently that fresh finance arrangements have been put in place. The current hope is that the pool will open in 2026, with updated all-the-year round facilities as well as the pool itself of course! Nationally, there has been a modest lido revival due to a number of factors, including a wish to save these unique open air pools, the rise in 'Wild Swimming' and the far more extensive use of wet-suits. Several of these pools are open all the year round for cold water swimming.
One of the best books on British lidos and open air pools is still Janet Smith's "Liquid Assets" published in 2005; it is written with a breadth of clarity and vision and also provided us with valuable publicity in the early years of our campaign. Sally Wainman THE EVERLASTING MERCY - John Masefield written 1911 (a short extract) O Christ who holds the open gate, O Christ who drives the furrow straight, O Christ, the plough, O Christ, the laughter Of holy white birds flying after, Lo, all my heart’s field red and torn, And Thou wilt bring the young green corn, The young green corn divinely springing, The young green corn forever singing; And when the field is fresh and fair Thy blessed feet shall glitter there, And we will walk the weeded field, And tell the golden harvest’s yield,
The corn that makes the holy bread By which the soul of man is fed, The holy bread, the food unpriced, Thy everlasting mercy, Christ.
