Ocean and Freshwater Animals - K1 Term 3

ENG K1 TERM 3 WK 5 DAY 2 LESSON 10 - Ocean and Freshwater Animals

Prawns are small crustaceans
with long, thin bodies.
It is found in seas and oceans
It lives in rivers and lakes for
some kinds.
It swims or drift in water
Prawn spends most of their
lives searching for food on the
seabed.

There are 7 species of ocean
turtles.
Turtles don't have teeth.
Turtle shells are made of over 50
bones fused together.
Marine turtle species vary
greatly in size (smallest 70cm
long and weigh up to 40kg, some
can reach up to 180cm long and
weigh 500kg.)

Stingrays are flattened fish
closely related to sharks.
They lay eggs – these eggs are
protected by a hard,
rectangular case often called a
“mermaid”s purse“!
Stingrays protect themselves
with venomous spines or barbs
in their tail.
Stingrays feed on small fish,
snails, clams, shrimp and other
small creatures.

Octopus have rounded bodies, bulging
eyes, and eight long arms.
Most octopuses stay along the
ocean’s floor, some live near the
water’s surface, some live in deep,
dark waters, rising from below at
dawn and dusk to search for food.
Octopuses shoot an inky fluid that
darkens the water,to protect
themselves.
The octopus can also change to gray,
brown, pink, blue, or green to blend in
with its surroundings or as a way to
communicate with other octopuses.

Seals have a layer of fat under
skin called blubber, which
keeps them warm in cold
water.
Their slick fur coat is
streamlined for gliding through
water.
A seal's whiskers help it to
detect prey in dark murky
waters.
Seals live on average for 25 -
30 years, females usually live
longer than males.

A female spring Chinook salmon
can carry more than 4,000 eggs.
Salmons have orange flesh.
Salmon are born in fresh water,
they migrate to salt water, and
then they return to freshwater to
spawn.

Sea Otters are one of the few animals
that use tools. They mainly use rocks,
but have been seen using glass soda
bottles and cement blocks.
Sea Otters have built in pockets under
their arms.
Sea Otters are the only marine
mammal without a layer of blubber
(fat).
Sea Otters’ diets can consist of: crabs,
mussels, clams, scallops, abalone, sea
urchins, octopus, squid, snails, sea
stars, and fat innkeeper worms.
Sea Otters’ only marine predators are
humans, great white sharks, and killer
whales.

Most spider crabs have thick and
rounded bodies.
Their sizes range from 12 mm to
4m.
Their shell and their legs are
covered with setae.
They are sluggish animals.
Crabs are scavengers of dead
flesh. Dead starfish and mollusks
are a part of their diet.

Crocodiles are quite a versatile
reptile which means they can live in
a variety of environments. Some of
these may include lakes, rivers,
freshwater bodies, salt water and
brackish water (a combination of
salt and freshwater).
Although the muscles in their jaw
are quite weak and incredibly
sensitive to touch, they have one of
the strongest bites in the animal
kingdom.
Crocodiles are opportunistic
feeders that prey on a variety of
species, from crabs and fish to
birds, turtles, pigs, buffalo and even
humans.

The River Otter have a streamlined body,
short legs with webbed feet, dense fur that
keeps them warm, a tapered tail, small
ears, and nostrils that can close
underwater.
River Otters are found along rivers,
streams, and lakes.
River Otters are carnivorous (they eat
meat). They eat a variety of animals,
including fish, crustaceans, amphibians,
snakes, water insects, snails, worms, small
mammals, birds, eggs, frogs, turtles, and
any aquatic invertebrates.
River otters can hold their breath for up to
8 minutes while under water.
River otters spend two-thirds of the time on
land.

Prawn is the name for acquatic
crustaceans of a small size
There are 13 types of prawns
Female prawns release eggs in the
hundreds of thousands
Prawns can change color based on
where they are

Hippos cannot swim.
They have incredibly sensitive skin.
They cannot breathe underwater.
They are not big eaters. They only
eat between 1 and 1,5 % of their
body weight every day.

Salmon are anadromous, which
means they are born in fresh water,
they migrate to salt water, and
then they return to freshwater to
spawn.

Crocodiles are quite a versatile
reptile which means they can live in a
variety of environments. Some of
these may include lakes, rivers,
freshwater bodies, salt water and
brackish water (a combination of salt
and freshwater).
Crocodiles eat without chewing. Their
jaw operates in such a way that it
cannot move sideways, therefore they
can’t grind down on food in a
traditional chewing motion. They will
then swallow stones to help them
digest and break down the food inside
their stomach.

It has a fan-shaped body
appearance and its hindmost legs
are just like paddles. However,
these legs are not used in
swimming.
These crabs inhabit mangroves and
estuaries.
In the natural environment, mud
crabs eat mainly shellfish and
crustaceans.

There are two main types of lobster
species: clawed and spiny lobsters.
Clawed lobsters have a pincer and
crusher claw which can be on either the
left or right, dependent on the lobster.
Spiny lobsters do not have claws but
have very large antenna and a harder
shell than clawed lobsters.
Most lobsters live in oceans but some can
be found in brackish water or freshwater.
Lobsters are bottom dwellers, meaning
they live on the ocean floor.
Lobsters feed on clams, crabs, starfish
and other sea life.
Lobsters are invertebrates, their shell is
an exoskeleton protecting their body. A
lobster’s body has 19 different parts,
each covered by a section of the shell.

Terrapins are freshwater animal that
spend some time on land.
Terrapins have hard shells to provide
protection.
Terrapins are aggressive and will bite.
They may also 'bark' when angry.
Terrapins may live for up to thirty
years.

Frogs drink water through their skin
Frogs can live on land and in fresh
water.
Frogs have skin with no scales or
hair.
They eat small birds, beetles, flies,
worms, and smaller frogs.
