Living on the edge of Dartmoor, James shares his rural
surroundings with a captivating array of wildlife including
the hares which have become his trademark. His diverse
new collection though demonstrates his versatility; with the
addition of a majestic stag, a surefooted race horse and an
elephant mother and child, James takes us from Scotland

to Kenya – via Ascot! – with something for everyone.

James sees the creation of his sculpture as both an art and
a craft. It takes several weeks to work through the stages

of each piece, from conception through to completion.
He uses the cire perdue (or lost wax) method whereby a
clay core and a wax coating is placed in a mould. The wax
is melted in the mould and discarded, to be replaced by
the molten bronze that will be the final version. The last
stage is to add the patina; this is a highly skilled process
which James undertakes personally as he believes that
the surface appearance of the piece is as important as
the shape and form. This results in a beautiful and tactile

object which will last across the generations.

“We generally spend Christmas at home on Dartmoor or with family in North Wales,
but on December 22nd the five of us boarded a plane bound for Nairobi then on
to Kilimanjaro Airport. We spent the most wonderful Christmas on Safari and were
incredibly lucky to see a beautiful baby elephant sheltering behind its mother. As you

can see, the two of them found their way into my heart and my collection.”
