In Search of a Home
“Ready or not, here I come!” Travis yelled.
Anne held her breath and tried to stay as still as she could. She was
hiding behind some bushes beside the fence. Anne and her brother Travis
loved playing hide-and-seek in their backyard.
5 Suddenly Anne heard a sound coming from behind the bush next to her.
She bent down and pushed back the leafy branches. Sitting in front of her
was a small gray kitten. Anne stretched out her hand. The kitten licked her
finger with a rough pink tongue.
“Travis,” Anne whispered, “come here.”
10 “What?” Travis replied.
“I found a kitten,” said Anne. “Do you think we should keep it?”
“I think we should try to find the owner,” suggested Travis. “Someone
might be missing the kitten.”
Anne agreed and ran to get some white paper to use for signs. She
15 drew a picture of the kitten on several pieces of the paper. Travis wrote
their phone number along with the words “Found: one gray kitten” on the
top of each piece of paper. The children asked their mother to help them
put up the signs. Their mother agreed, and she walked with them
around the neighborhood. Anne and Travis put up their signs on
20 telephone poles and in the front window of the small corner grocery store.
When the children and their mother came home, they waited and waited
for someone to call about the kitten.
“Whoever owns that kitten must miss it a lot,” sighed Anne. “I hope we
find the owner soon.”
25 By dinnertime no one had called. Anne and Travis were beginning to
worry. What if the owner did not see the pictures they had put up? What if
the owner was not able to call them at their house?
Page 4
Anne came up with another plan. She and Travis placed the kitten in a
small box with a soft, fluffy blanket. They asked their father to join them as
30 they talked with neighbors to try to find out who owned the kitten.
The children and their father walked to several houses, but no one
recognized the kitten. By the time they reached the last house, Anne and
Travis felt sad. They could not seem to find a home for the tiny creature.
Travis reached up his hand and knocked on the door of the last house. A
35 few moments later, a woman opened the door.
“We found a missing kitten,” Anne explained to the woman, gently
holding out the box. “Do you know who its owner is?”
Suddenly the gray kitten began to purr. The noise sounded like the soft
rumble of a distant motor. A smile filled the woman’s face as she looked into
40 the box.
“Callie!” she cried, lifting the kitten. “I’m so glad that you’re back!”
Anne and Travis smiled at each other. The little lost kitten had found
its home.

a new home here in Smithville. Otters are playful animals, and watching them is a
great way to spend part of an afternoon.
Fun Otter Facts
• Otters eat many types of food. Some foods that otters eat are crabs, clams,

themselves in sea plants so that they do not float away.
• Otters can live for up to twenty-three years.
The Smithville Otter Family
• Hours: Visitors to the aquarium may see the otter family from Monday
through Friday between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.
• Admission: Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students. Children under five
years old are admitted free.

Read the following passage “The Amazing Otter.” Then answer questions 15–18 based
upon the passage. You may turn back to the passage as you answer questions. You may
write in your test booklet, but you must mark your answers on your answer document.
The Amazing Otter
Sea otters are very special animals. They are the smallest sea mammal in
all of North America. Sea otters have legs, but these creatures hardly ever
leave the water! Otters use their back legs and tails to swim. Sea otters
spend most of their time hunting for food underwater. They use their eyes,
5 noses, whiskers, and paws to look for food.
An otter’s body is covered with reddish-brown fur that is very thick. In
fact, the sea otter has the thickest fur of any mammal. The thickness of the
otter’s fur keeps it warm in cold water. The otter’s fur is not the most
amazing thing about this creature, however.
10 Sea otters are very smart animals. They are great problem solvers, and
they even know how to use tools. Sometimes an otter may find a clam shell
that is stuck in sea plants. The sea otter does not worry. It uses its front paws
and a tool to capture its dinner!
First, the otter finds a rock that it can use as a hammer. The otter swims
15 back to the clam and then hits the clam shell until the shell comes apart
from the seaweed. Next, the otter swims to the surface of the water with its
dinner. The clam shell is usually tightly closed. The otter must open the shell
in order to reach the food inside.
To open the shell, the otter again uses a rock. Floating on the water, the
20 otter rolls onto its back. The rock rests on the otter’s stomach. The otter
then hits the clam shell against the rock very quickly. Soon the clam shell
cracks open, and the otter eats a tasty meal.
Otters are special sea animals. They know how to use objects from where
they live to help them. Few other sea animals show this kind of skill.

39. Read the following persuasive paragraph that Kim wrote.
We need to have physical education or PE every day at our school. We
have very few chances for exercise in our lives. Many of us ride the bus to
school or have our parents bring us in their cars. We spend our time after
school doing homework, reading our library books, or watching
television. In order to be healthy, we all need to work our muscles harder
and make our hearts beat faster. Daily physical education classes at
school would help to make that happen.
Kim wants to add to her persuasive paragraph about physical education classes.
She read the following information in an encyclopedia article about exercise.
Exercise is good for muscles and hearts, but it also may be good for
people’s brains! Some scientists think that exercise raises the amount of
blood that flows to the brain. The result may be that people can think more
clearly.
