MESSAGE FROM
PRESIDENT

THROUGH CHALLENGES WE LEARN AND GROW
“Alone we can do so little;

Together we can do so much.”
– Helen Keller

This financial year ending 31st March 2020 proved to be another busy year for Club HEAL. Our
second CREST (Community Resource and Engagement Support Team) commenced work in early 2019
– based at our Pasir Ris centre, the three-women team reached out to many in the Pasir Ris and
Tampines region.

With the President’s Challenge for 2019 focusing on mental health, our Our Patron in Chief, President
Halimah Yacob graced our Hari Raya Celebrations cum Volunteer Appreciation on 29 June 2019 at
Fuchun CC. It was extra special because our peers were able to give wonderful angklung
performances, under the guidance of Angklung Instructor Ms Faridah Jamal and her student
volunteers.

Our very own Peer Support Specialist Rushshidah also featured in the President’s Challenge Charity
show on Mediacorp later in the year.

Club HEAL celebrated World Mental Health day 2019 with the book launch of “A Worthwhile Duty”
and its Malay version “Kewajipan Berbaloi” – once again with President Halimah as GOH. This book
that focuses on preventive aspects of health with a holistic approach was well received by the Malay
Muslim Community, with its first 500 copies sold out in the space of a few months.

The Program Keluarga Syifa’ pilot at AsySyafaah mosque was successfully completed in 2019, with
the mosque’s volunteers able to carry on the programme independently, and benefiting many seniors
in the community. An-Nur mosque is the second mosque carrying out this programme since, and we in
Club HEAL hope that with MUIS’ support, many other mosques and their surrounding community of
seniors can benefit similarly in the long term.

Another important milestone is the opening of our fourth centre at Buangkok Crescent on 21st
November 2019 by Member of Parliament Dr Intan Azura Mokhtar. Thanks to Dr Intan and her
residents, Club HEAL is able to reach out to and serve better even more clients and caregivers in the
surrounding areas of Buangkok, Hougang, Sengkang, Punggol, Serangoon North and Ang Mo Kio.

PAGE 05

The Our Healing Voice Programme had a second successful run in 2019, culminating in a rousing
graduation ceremony graced by Ms Tina Hung, Deputy CEO of NCSS, whose team has been
instrumental in getting Club HEAL support for this important peer advocacy and mentorship initiative.
On 14 February 2020, Club HEAL successfully shifted its premises at Bukit Batok East from Block 244
to a much bigger space at Block 254.
Finally, this financial year saw a major restructuring exercise by the Management Committee. We
decided to remove the position of CEO and replace it with an Executive Director (Clinical) – a
position taken up by a founding member and former Vice President of Club HEAL – Ms Yang Chek
Salikin. With her vast experience in mental health of more than 45 years and her intimate knowledge
and involvement in Club HEAL, Kak Yang (as she is fondly called) is indeed the best person to be at
the helm of the programmes of Club HEAL.
On the corporate side, Management Committee members guided and led our staff in the areas of
Finance, Human Resources, IT, Facilities Management, Volunteer Management, Marketing,
Communications and Fundraising.
With the greater leadership and participation by the Management Committee, we are as members of
one big family - members who are united and show genuine care and concern for each other in our
common quest to serve people with mental health challenges and their caregivers in their recovery
journeys.
This we do very well, even in the unexpected presence of the challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"For indeed, with hardship (will be) ease.”
– Quran 94:5

MESSAGES FROM
OUR PATRONS

PRESIDENT HALIMAH YACOB
PATRON-IN-CHIEF

“I am encouraged by the efforts of Club HEAL to promote
good health and well-being in the community. Let’s do our part
to help raise awareness about the importance of mental
health and reach out to support those with mental health
issues so that they too can lead meaningful and fulfilling lives.”

MR ZAQY MOHAMAD
PATRON

“The mental wellbeing of workers is a key part of ensuring a safe and healthy
workplace.  This year, COVID-19 has brought about changes in working
arrangements and uncertainty on job prospects.  As such, MOM collaborated
with the Institute of Mental Health (IMH), National Council of Social Service
(NCSS) and Agency for Integrated Care (AIC) to issue an advisory in April to
employees and self-employed persons on coping during this trying
period.  We will continue to raise awareness on mental health at work, and
support companies to protect and promote workers’ mental wellbeing.”

MADAM RAHAYU MAHZAM
PATRON

"I am happy to see all the efforts by Club Heal to support those with
mental afflictions and create awareness about mental health. I look
forward to future initiatives and collaborations which would benefit
the community"

"The person who really loves you is not someone who sees you
every day, but someone who looks for you every day." - Sabariah

PAGE 13

Vocational Rehabilitation

Clients at centres are also taught vocational skills such as making
handicraft items and pottery which are sold at our pushcart and other
platforms. Other skills include housekeeping in which selected clients are
reimbursed for the general upkeep of our centres. At the pushcart at
IMH, our clients are given the opportunity to interact with the public
through the sales of the items. They are given stipends for their work at
the pushcart.

OHV Programme

The Our HEALing Voice (OHV) is a 6-month programme co-produced
with NCSS, where participants built on skills to increase self-
acceptance, self-confidence and remove self-stigma. In this
programme, the participants are given opportunities to share their
recovery and resilience story, so as to inspire others as well as gain
experience in peer mentoring through learning from other peer
participants.

COMIT Programme

Our COMmunity Intervention Team (COMIT), is embedded in the
community to provide holistic services for clients with mental health
needs and their caregivers so they can live and age well at home and
in the community. It is an allied health-led team which provides
psycho-social therapeutic intervention for clients with mental health
needs and supports their caregivers in coping with caregiving for their
loved ones. Services include counselling and psycho-education of
individuals and their families and home visits.

CREST Programme

One of our outreach efforts is through its Community Resource
Engagement and Support Team (CREST) which is a community-based
programme that aims to serve a community safety net to reach out to
those at risk of/with mental illness. We have 2 CREST teams at the
Northern and Eastern regions.

Elderly Programme

Among clients served by the Rehab, CREST and COMIT teams are the elderly
with mental health challenges such as depression and dementia. We also
help empower their families through counseling and psychoeducation. We
regularly train volunteers for the elderly programme through our Silver
Volunteers’ Training.

We collaborated with MUIS to pilot a mosque volunteer-led day activity
programme for seniors and their caregivers called the PKS (Programme
Keluarga Syifa’) at 2 mosques at Sembawang and Marsiling.

PAGE 14

Support Groups

Support groups are formed to assist different groups of individuals
with their respective issues and challenges. Currently, Club HEAL
counsellors conducts regular support groups for caregivers and youths
with mental health challenges.

Addictions Programme for Women

A HEALing Space is a programme that reaches out to women in recovery
from drug addiction. We provide counselling and psycho-education, and
also extend support to their families. We collaborate with the Singapore
Prison Service to help women in recovery through prison visits by our
addictions counselor prior to their release.

Madrasah Counselling

Funded by MUIS, our Madrasah counselors provide counseling and
case work services to students at all 6 full-time madrasahs in
Singapore, as well as conduct mental health talks and training for
teachers and parents.

Community Outreach & Training

Club HEAL conducts regular public talks and training in its effort to
reach out to the public to educate and discuss on issues and topics
related to mental health.

Club HEAL also runs Healing Friends Training (HFT) course to train and
equip volunteers with the necessary skills to build a therapeutic
relationship with the clients or programme participants. At the same
time, these sessions provide the volunteers with mental health
education so that they are equipped with the knowledge to contribute
in a confident and safe manner.

Community partners such as PERGAS also engage us to conduct
mental health training for their members.

Back-to-Work Programme

In Club HEAL, we recognize the importance of employment for some of

our clients. The ‘Back-to-Work Initiative’ initiative helps them to

integrate into the community and the workforce, allowing them to put
their skills and capabilities into practice and earn an income for
themselves. This programme is conducted by our Employment Support
Officer, himself a person in recovery.
