22 Simple Present Tense

Read the sentences below. How are the verbs used?

(a) I brush my teeth every (b) The moon is round.
morning.

The verbs ‘brush’ and ‘is’ are used in the simple present
tense. When should we use the simple present tense?
(a) When the action is a regular action. For this we
usually use words like: always, often, usually,
sometimes, never, etc.
(b) When we want to tell people that we do the action
every day, every night, on Tuesdays, on weekends,
once a month, etc.
(c) When we want to state a fact or a universal truth.
Look at the examples below.

My dog barks. It jumps. I come. You agree.
The bell rings. Meg says. We like. Many girls talk.

actions. How are these actions performed?

(a) They swim fast. (b) This boy walks slowly.

(c) My aunt sews well. (d) The choir sings sweetly.

Adverbs are words that tell us more about the

‘sweetly’ are called adverbs of manner.
Adverbs of manner tell us how the actions are
performed. They answer the question ‘How?’

42 Sentence Structure

Read the sentences below. Can you
name the subjects?

(a) A cow has two horns. (b) Harry lives in London.

The words ‘A cow’ and ‘Harry’ are the subjects. They
form the first part of each sentence.
The second part of each sentence is a group of words
called the predicate. It tells us something about
the subject. The predicate can have only one verb.
Sometimes it may not have an object.
Example: A cow moos.
These sentences are called simple sentences.

179

07U37-48 NPrimary English Yr2.indd 179 31/10/2019 10:49 AM

Now look at more examples below.
(a) The lady gave Michael some money.
(b) Mr Fraser asked her a question.
Notice that the predicate in each sentence has two
objects. They may be direct or indirect. For example,
the words ‘some money’ is a direct object and the
word ‘Michael’ is an indirect object. Similarly, the
words ‘a question’ is a direct object and the word
‘her’ is an indirect object.

A simple sentence has one object and one predicate (with one verb). The
predicate may or may not have an object. If there are two objects, they
may be direct or indirect.
