How the Electronic Era Began
The moment the world wide web was created, the world changed. Everyday 320 million
people in North America use the internet. It is used for work, school, and for entertainment
(World Internet Statistics). The world wide web was created 28 years ago by Tim Berners-Lee, a
computer scientist at the physics laboratory CERN. Years later, the world relies on the web.
When the web was just an idea, Berners-Lee had no idea what it would become. He imagined it
as an open platform that would allow everyone, everywhere to share information, access
opportunities and collaborate across geographic and cultural boundaries. The team at CERN was
shocked to see how the web was being used and the high-profile hacks that began to happen. The
web has become such a big and common thing, that the CSI is trying to find a way to use
smartphones as a surveillance devices using their sophisticated hacking tools. When the web was
invented, it was meant for scientists to share data from their experiments. Before the web was
invented, the internet and hypertext already existed. It was mostly used by scientists, because no
one knew how to link one document directly to another. When the world wide web was created,
it made the internet available to everyone, not just scientists. It also became a way for people to
express themselves. The web provided an opportunity for many more jobs. App creation,
bloggers, content creators, and more all rely on the world wide web for their careers. The web is
a crucial thing in our lives today, so it is important for teens to be educated on the way that the
things they are using come to be.
