1 7 MR.KUMAR POLE Managing Director, MCT and Vice-President, SMBG APAC Region I would like to wish everyone much success in 2024, and particularly for the APAC SMBG team and our regional functional partners, I look forward to building on the progress we made in 2023. While we still have another quarter to go in our fiscal year, the beginning of a new calendar year gives us an opportunity to reflect on the outlook for this year, and on some broader events/trends that have the potential to impact our business. On the plus side, export-dominated economies like Japan and much of the APAC Region, benefited from weaker currencies. More recently, the US Federal Reserve has signaled - and the markets have already priced in - multiple rates cuts in 2024, which have the potential for significant impact in our Region. However, much of this is predicated on a sustained lowering of US inflation, which could well turn out to be a premature assumption. Closer to home for us, 2024 will be a big year for the Bank of Japan. Market hopes remain high that the BOJ will end its negative interest rate policy as early as the first half of this year, if wages and inflation continue to look solid, though it is expected to move more cautiously on it’s first rate hike in 17 years. Here, the US Federal Reserve and BOJ are somewhat linked. If the US Fed starts cutting rates aggressively, narrowing the gap with BOJ rates, this will put upward pressure on the JPY. A more cautious US approach, would give the BOJ more time to assess the situation, including the first round of wage negotiations at major Japanese companies, which are typically in March. COP28, Dubai The recently concluded 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (or Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC, more commonly known as COP28) was held in Dubai at the end of 2023. The conference reinforced the commitment of over 100 countries (including Japan, and several APAC ones) towards decarbonization, global net zero, and keeping global warming to 1.5 °C. To this, was added a commitment to “transition away from fossil fuels.” Thus, carbon neutrality and circular economy initiatives remain key to the chemical industry, as does industry restructuring in the Japanese petrochemical business. Elections The year 2024 will be the biggest election year in history as over 60 nations, collectively representing half of the world's population, prepare to cast their votes in a series of pivotal elections. These include India's sprawling multi-day legislative elections, recognized as the world's largest, to Indonesia’s presidential poll, the world’s biggest single-day vote. Aside from these two, other countries in our part of the world that will host elections this year include Bangladesh (already concluded), Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Taiwan. Elections have consequences and the potential to impact our business as new government policies have a broad range of social, economic, and industrial implications. TTHHOOUUGGHHTTSS OONN TTHHEE NNEEWW YYEEAARR Interest Rates Interest rates are a key factor impacting our company and our borrowing costs, those of our customers, and have broader economic ripple effects on the countries in which we operate in the APAC Region. Through much of the last 2 years, high interest rates in the US were the big headline. The uptrend in the dollar and U.S. interest rates in 2022 and 2023 left many APAC economies starved for global capital as investors rushed into American assets. It also left the region vulnerable to imported inflation as exchange rates weakened, making imports such as energy and food products more expensive.
